Today John Tefteller and our guest, Researcher Dr. Joe Webb, listen to a 1947 episode of Suspense featuring the comedian Eddie Bracken. Suspense often purposely put actors in roles that were in direct contrast with their type. This is a dramatic departure from Bracken's comedic role that we presented on Tuesday. In this story he portrays Elwood, a serial killer, seemingly driven by a distorted perception of love and represented by the objects he steals from his victims. This week we're paring two shows that feature the largely forgotten comedian Eddie Bracken. We're starting here with the extremely obscure The Eddie Bracken Show. Bracken was much more successful as a support comedian, on shows like the Sealtest Variety Theater. This is a sitcom that is reminiscent of The Mel Blanc Show, centering on Eddie Bracken's character attempting to assist Connie to enter her picture in a beauty contest and helping her father's company against a lawsuit involving a claim of illness from contaminated candy. The show also starred the movie character actor William Demarest. The show The Scout is a Family Theater radio drama episode that aired on June 15, 1949. It features Eddie Bracken, Kathy O'Donnell, and Branch Rickey in pivotal roles. The story, introduced by Branch Rickey, revolves around baseball, a theme close to Rickey's heart due to his long association with the sport. He introduces the tale of Skip Welch, a character not famous in the big leagues or recorded in major league record books but regarded by Rickey as a true big-league player due to his integrity and character. The narrative unfolds in a small Midwestern town called Rawson, where Skip Welch, once an orphan and now a minor league baseball player, dedicates his time to coaching boys from the local orphanage. His story is one of ambition, moral dilemmas, and the harsh realities of professional sports. Despite his skill and passion, Skip faces challenges that test his values, particularly when he meets a mysterious scout promising him a future in the major leagues under stringent, morally ambiguous conditions. As Skip pursues his dream, he finds himself compromising the very principles he holds dear, leading to a climactic moment where he must choose between personal gain and the well-being of a young boy named Chuck from the orphanage.List of characters and their actors:Eddie Bracken as Skip Welch: A hopeful minor league baseball player and the protagonist of the story.Kathy O'Donnell as Mary Collins: Skip's love interest who helps him see the value in moral integrity over success at any cost.Branch Rickey as the Host/Narrator: Introduces the story and provides commentary on the moral of the story.A character known as the Scout: Represents the temptation of success at the expense of one's values.Chuck: A young boy from the orphanage who looks up to Skip and whose fate becomes intertwined with Skip's moral decisions. The story serves as a parable on the importance of playing hard but clean, emphasizing integrity over victory and the real meaning of success. It is an echo of Rickey's own beliefs about the role of sports in building character.
EPISODE 56 - “MARJORIE REYNOLDS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 10/07/2024 Most film fanatics agree that after the Paramount Picture's holiday classic “Holiday Inn” (1942), actress MARJORIE REYNOLDS, who gave a star-turn as struggling actress Linda Mason who gets a break singing and dancing in the seasonal nightclub run by BING CROSBY, should have been a big star. However, for reasons not quite clear, she didn't rise into the stratosphere. While she had a very respectable and long career, she just didn't soar to the top, as expected. As our Star of the Month, we will take a look into Marjorie Reynolds' life and career and explore our theories on why “Holiday Inn” did not make her a major star. EPISODE 27 - “Dona Drake: What Price Fame” - 03/18/2024 Latina star DONA DRAKE, who signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1941, was many things — singer, dancer, actress, bandleader, musician — but one thing she wasn't, as it turned out, was Latin! While Paramount promoted their new discovery as a spitfire Latina born in Mexico City, Drake was, in fact, an African-American woman from Florida who pretended to be Latin, going so far as to learn Spanish fluently, in order to have a better chance at a Hollywood career. A tonally disparate pair of great films for Paramount 1941: Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda, one of the greatest movies ever made, according to Elise; and a real rarity, William Wellman's Reaching for the Sun, starring some important Sturges actors: Joel McCrea, Ellen Drew, and Eddie Bracken. We interrogate the strange central relationship in The Lady Eve, examining its sadistic, maternal, narcissistic, you-name-it qualities, and Sturges' masterful blending of comedy tropes, melodrama structure, and painful personal psychology. Then we turn to the interesting mixture of "universal" (20th century Western) gender tropes and modern modifications of them in Wellman's tale of a man torn between urban opportunity and Thoreauvian freedom. Then, in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we briefly discuss the Coen brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) and its curious misunderstandings of Capra, and Brian De Palma's brilliant Femme Fatale and its channeling of Lynch and Verhoeven, but with De Palma's peculiar mixture of sweetness and satire. This week is the start (1 0f 4) of our Preston Sturges theme month. For week one we watched the 1944 movie The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. This is a kinetic film that we found to be thoroughly entertaining throughout.
Sealtest Variety Theater (Dorothy Lamore) with the episode titled Sir Lancelot of the Lake. Featuring Ray Milland, Dorothy Lamore, and Eddie Bracken. This enjoyable show, originally recorded and aired in 1995, and digitally remastered to be available on this podcast, stars the late actor Eddie Bracken, known for playing Mr. Duncan in Home Alone 2, and National Lampoon's Vacation, among many others. We discuss the changes in show business from his earlier performances, his enjoyment of his later roles, and the role of family in his life.
Episode 91 aired May 11, 1944 on CBS Radio. A teenage boy who seems to have disappeared after having a quarrel with a friend some three years earlier. He is believed to have been murdered by his friend but no hard evidence has ever been found. Comedian Eddie Bracken stars in this serious role. Edward Vincent Bracken (February 7, 1915 – November 14, 2002) was an American actor. Bracken became a Hollywood comedy legend with lead performances in the films Hail the Conquering Hero and The Miracle of Morgan's Creek both from 1944, both of which have been preserved by the National Film Registry. During this era, he also had success on Broadway, with performances in plays like Too Many Girls (1939). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Bracken
Returning to Watch With Jen today is one of the podcast's most popular and frequent guests - my good friend and Pandemic Movie Club buddy Jordan Harper. An Edgar award-winning crime writer of the remarkable novel She Rides Shotgun and the terrific book of short stories Love and Other Wounds, Jordan also works in Hollywood as a TV writer and producer and has been behind such series as The Mentalist, Gotham, and Hightown. He also created a stunning pilot for CBS of L.A. Confidential that was just celebrated at the ATX Festival as well. And since the most frequent feedback I receive whenever Jordan is on is compliments about our chemistry and banter (as evidenced in the David Mamet episode), it's only fitting that this time around, we ditched the crime genre in favor of screwball comedies.Breaking down the subversive wit, ingenuity, and downright horniness of four famous Preston Sturges movies, we discuss Barbara Stanwyck's powers of seduction as a con-woman in The Lady Eve, the lessons Hollywood can and has learned from Sullivan's Travels, the chaotic confidence of The Palm Beach Story, and the brilliance of Eddie Bracken yelling "Spots!" in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (7/1/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/53174633
SUPRISE! It's a BONUS episode, where we finally get to meet the elusive brother... Jeff! His choice for favorite childhood movie to review was Wind in the Willows directed by directed by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. It is an adaptation of Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel The Wind in the Willows. Set in a pastoral version of England, the film focuses on four anthropomorphized animal characters (Moley, Ratty, Mr. Toad, and Mr. Badger) and contains themes of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The film features the voices of Charles Nelson Reilly, Roddy McDowall, José Ferrer, and Eddie Bracken. The screenplay was written by Romeo Muller. 1 The music for this episode is Simpler Times by Man DeLorean. 1 Wikipedia
In only three short years, Writer/Director Preston Sturges managed to climb from the lowly rung of Hollywood screenwriter to become one of the highest paid men in the entire country, making the unprecedented transition from doctoring hackneyed studio scripts to directing superlative auteur efforts, culminating in the smash success of The Miracle of Morgan's Creek. This eccentric romantic comedy, set and shot during the nadir of America's involvement in World War II, manages to accomplish what very few Hollywood movies had ever managed up until that point. Sturges' deft penmanship allows him to skirt around the strict censorship of the Production Code office, during a time of hyper internal scrutiny no less, as Hollywood gave over all their efforts to supporting the war effort. Somehow, someway, Sturges manages to insert some sly ridicule into this small town comedy, while also tackling such brazen themes as overzealous military infatuation, shameless political maneuvering through savvy media manipulation, and perhaps most shocking of all, teenage pregnancy and bigamy. How Sturges got that subject past the censors we may never know, but thank god he did, as it gives The Miracle of Morgan's Creek its astonishingly hysterical premise, catapulting the dynamic talents of Eddie Bracken, Betty Hutton, and the most popular Sturges Stock Company actor William Demarest, ultra ripe comedic material that will send you rolling into the aisles. What was once Paramount's highest grossing film of the year is now something of a sometimes overlooked gem in Sturges' filmography, one we are all too happy to rediscover and laugh out loud to again. SHOWS: The Producers, Love! Valour! Compassion, Angels in America There is no greater representation of modern Broadway than three-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane. His ability to transition from theatre to film, comedy to drama, tear-inducing laughter to heart-stopping pathos, all in one performance, is comparable to none. Nathan Lane has shared his gifts with audiences in such shows as the revivals of Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Odd Couple, Angels in America, and the original productions of Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Producers, The Addams Family, November, Gary, and so many more! Nathan pulls back the curtain on his career to discuss how Eddie Bracken taught him comedy, what it was like collaborating with Terrence McNally, and why Joe Mantello jilted him for Laurie Metcalf! Eddie Bracken endeared himself to audiences with winning turns as lovable losers in comedies like The Miracle oft Morgan's Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero, but on Suspense he turned his "aw shucks" persona on its head for a series of shows as mysterious characters with sinister sides. We'll hear him in "The Visitor" (originally aired on CBS on May 11, 1944) and in "Elwood" (originally aired on CBS on March 5, 1947).
“Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes, or perhaps you don’t want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the Earth, which is only four short hours away!” Harold Ramis’ second foray into feature film directing introduced the world to the Griswolds – Clark, Ellen, Rusty and Audrey – as they drive from Chicago to LA on a 2-week vacation with the aim of visiting an obvious Disneyland replacement for legal reasons, Walley World. It’s a wonderful film and proved to be another box office success for Ramis, who wouldn’t direct another hit like this for 10 years with ‘Groundhog Day.’ Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our very short Harold Ramis series with the classic 1983 road trip comedy “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” We talk about the original John Hughes story on which this is based and look at the darker tones in that story, comparing it with how it was reshaped in this film. We discuss the cast, notably Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Imogene Coca (and her dog), Randy Quaid, Christie Brinkley and Eddie Bracken. We chat about the ending of the short story, the original ending and the rewritten ending and debate what works best (and what problems this one may have because of the final ending). And we, of course, talk about the franchise, comparing this with what we view as the only other good one in the bunch, 1989’s ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.’ It’s a comedy classic and a great way to finish our Ramis series, so check it out then tune in!
