Hey Folks! I hope you are enjoying the summer and some tiki drinks as well!! This episode will cover the cocktail named Chief Lapu Lapu. It is one of those typical tiki cocktails that have different stories of "who" and "when" this was created. We will cover the story with Don the Beachcomber and his Filipino bartenders that he had in the back room creating the secret cocktails. There is the legend of Chief Lapu Lapu from the Philippines who was the first leader who resisted the Porteguese's leader (explorer) Ferdinand Magellan who was the first to go all the way around the world and prove the earth was round. Yes, after Christopher Columbus. The recipes are the following as we cover three of them on the show: Don the Beachcomber's recipe: 1.5 oz light Puerto Rican rum (Bacardi), 1.5 oz Dark Jamaican rum (Blackwell), 3 oz orange juice, 2 oz lemon juice, 1 simple syrup, 1 oz passion fruit syrup. Shake and unstrained pour into a large snifter glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Serves 2 people. Jeff "Beachbum" Berry's recipe: Aku Aku Lapu: 1 oz gold Puerto Rican rum (Bacardi gold), 1 oz Jamaican rum (Blackwell), 1 oz Lemon Hart 151 proof rum, 1 oz lemon, 1 oz unsweetened pineapple juice, 1 oz white grapefruit juice, 1 oz orange juice, 1 oz falernum, 2 cups of crushed ice. Blend for about 20 seconds, pour into a large snifter or tiki bowl, add more ice and garnish with a flower. Serves 2 people. Tipsy Bartender's recipe (who is this guy? Listen to find out): 1 oz white rum, 1 oz dark rum, 1.5 oz orange juice, 1 oz lime juice, 0.5 oz passion fruit puree, 0.5 oz simple syrup. Shake and strain into a glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a pineapple leaf and an orange wedge. I have not made this yet and so let me know what you think of this recipe if you try it out. On the "Did you know?" segment: We talk more about Ferdinand Magellan's exploring the world and finding spices in the new world. He set sail in 1519 with over 300 crew members in 3 ships. By the end of the journey back to Spain, there was 18 crew left in one ship and (spoiler) Magellan is killed. Get this Paola has a fact that I did not know..yes it happens!!! Kim and Katie are back with a recap of Episode 4 of Season 2 of Rock of Love! This one is a WILD ride. After the last elimination, Bret innocently snubs Aubry when saying goodnight to his ladies. She begins to obsess over the snub’s meaning. This is only made worse when Daisy slips into Bret’s room for an unexpected nightcap. Were they maybe just playing bingo in there… for HOURS? The next day, the women compete in teams of two to build custom choppers. The lead mechanic on the winning team gets a solo date, whereas the losing lead must clean Bret’s own bike with a toothbrush. Bret treats the remainder of the winners to a 50’s, pin-up photo shoot. Later, Aubry confronts Bret about the infamous snub and things get wilder when an emotional Kristy Joe gathers all of the ladies to confess her doubts about being in the house. We finally get to one of the most shocking eliminations of all time when one of the ladies sacrifices herself for another.   COCKTAILS DISNEY-INSPIRED DRINKS CREATED IN SPOKANE GO VIRAL By Lisa Waananen Cinderella is whipped cream vodka, blueberry vodka and cream. Maleficent is black vodka, grape schnapps and apple pucker. Tinkerbell is honey vodka, triple sec and sparkling cider, topped with a dusting of edible glitter. “I always try to match the character to the look of the drink and the taste as much as possible,” says Cody Winfrey, whose cocktails inspired by Disney movie characters have found an insatiable audience of fans online. Winfrey, 23, grew up during the tail end of the VCR-and-tape heyday of Disney’s animation revival, and he recalls spending time at his grandmother’s house, where she had the whole collection. He watched The Nightmare Before Christmas every day as a kid, and now has a tattoo of Maleficent, the villain in Sleeping Beauty, on his left arm. “The great thing about Disney is that everyone has an almost spiritual connection with some character,” he says. “Everyone has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite character, everyone has a favorite world. So I knew that it would resonate with people in some way.” The idea started earlier this year as a way to set himself apart — and have fun — since he wasn’t having any luck blindly dropping off applications for bartending gigs here in Spokane. He enlisted a friend, graphic designer Lindsey Wells, to help set up an online presence. Then at the beginning of February, his creations suddenly started getting attention around the web. The drinks were picked up by a well-read Disney-themed blog, and the popular (if not always PC) instructional web series Tipsy Bartender asked to feature several of his recipes. BuzzFeed got in touch and wrote a post headlined “29 Disney-Themed Cocktails You Need To Try ASAP.” One of Winfrey’s Tumblr posts with new drinks drew more than 285,000 “notes” — the Tumblr measure for “likes” and re-blogs — and his Facebook page has more than 30,000 Likes. He’s received messages from around the world with suggestions and requests. “It was a very exhausting first few days, because you can’t really prepare yourself for going viral,” he says. Realizing his drinks might also attract the attention of Disney lawyers, Winfrey gave himself a crash course on the legal aspects and makes sure to always say he owns the drink recipes, not the characters. The e-book he’s finishing with Wells titles the recipes as “fairy tale” cocktails to avoid unnecessary trouble. To date, he’s done about 40 Disney-inspired drinks, requiring an increasingly crowded personal collection of liquor bottles to have just the right ingredients on hand. Some movies have proved to be more challenging — The Lion King and Pocahontas, for example — so he’ll watch clips to see what he can pull from the color palette or characters’ personalities. “Alice in Wonderland was also tough, because it’s such an abstract, out-there kind of movie that I wasn’t sure how to do the film justice with drinks,” he says. Last week, his Mickey Mouse-inspired “Mouse Slide” — made with Oreo vodka, white chocolate liqueur, ice cream and Oreos for the ears — quickly became the most popular yet, with more than 2,000 Likes on Facebook. Despite all the online success, Winfrey is still searching for bartending opportunities here in Spokane.
