At 5:30PM eastern time over Mutual Broadcasting on Independence Day, 1944, The Tom Mix Ralston Straight Shooters took to the air. Originally airing from NBC in Chicago in 1933, it featured the just-heard Hal Peary, and the ever-present Willard Waterman. Tom Mix was created as an advertising vehicle for the Ralston Purina Company. Its format was devised by Charles Claggett, a St. Louis adman and based on the life of a real cowboy, Tom Mix. Born in Pennsylvania in 1880, he became a soldier and champion roper, winning a national title in 1909. Mix began appearing in movies, and much like Buffalo Bill Cody, his legend soon outgrew his actual exploits thanks to natural showmanship. By the time radio got him, he was seldom mentioned in print without a platoon of fantastic adjectives. Perhaps the most famous actor to play Tom Mix was Russell Thorson, who held the role for the Blue Network in the early 1940s, until it was canceled on March 27th, 1942. Tom Mix was revived and moved to Mutual beginning June 5th, 1944 in a fifteen minute serial. By then, Mix joined others like Jack Armstrong, Captain Midnight, and even Superman in the war against the axis. The show became known as “radio's biggest western-detective program.” Joe “Curley” Bradley played Mix throughout the later run. Bradley was a former Oklahoma cowboy and Hollywood stuntman who had learned to sing around bonfires. As for the real Tom Mix, he had nothing to do with the serial. He died in a car accident near Florence, Arizona on October 12th, 1940. At 6:15PM it was Hop Harrigan's turn to sign on, over The Blue Network's WJZ. It starred Chester Stratton as Hop Harrigan, young aviator known as “America's ace of the airways,” with Jackson Beck as Tank Tinker. Beck was all over radio. Hop Harrigan first took to the air on August 31st, 1942, running on The Blue Network and later ABC until August 2nd, 1946. It was revived from October 2nd, 1946 through February 6th, 1948 over Mutual Broadcasting. Hop went on missions in dangerous territory behind enemy lines. He had dogfights, went underground in war-torn Berlin, and saw heavy service in the Pacific during the battle for Okinawa.

Early movies needed a hero, Gilbert Anderson became Broncho Billy and made a sequel a week, making $50,000 per show. Bill Hart became a clean-cut hero creating the look of the Old West. Next, Tom Mix was a good athlete and did his own stunts while dressed in all white hat and clothes. By 1925 he was making $17,500 a week and was a star to millions until he died in a car wreck. Yakima Canutt, the most famous stuntman in Hollywood and a trailblazer in the second unit director area, was born on a ranch in the Snake River Hills, 16 miles from Colfax, on Penewawa Creek. Canutt rode and roped as a child. He entered his first rodeo at 16 and proved to be a natural bucking-bronc rider and bulldogger. He continued his record-breaking career as a saddle-bronc rider after serving a brief time in the US navy during the first World War. He also adopted the nickname "Yakima," which, despite being Native American, actually refers to the town he was born in at the time and was not given because he was Native American, as has been incorrectly stated elsewhere. His ancestry is exclusively European. He met Tom Mix at a Los Angeles rodeo, and Tom helped him land a job as a cowboy extra. Canutt's prowess as a stunt combatant and rider earned him a role as the star of several western silent films. But a bout of the illness had injured his vocal cords, and his scratchy voice was not appropriate for the heroics of sound-film cowboys when sound became popular. Despite continuing to perform roles as a heavie, he concentrated on stunt work and became renowned as Hollywood's top stuntman in the 1930s. Together with John Wayne, he invented a new method for filming screen fights that looked more realistic, and Canutt spent years developing or perfecting the majority of the stunts seen in westerns and action movies. After suffering serious injuries while performing stunts for Boom Town and In Old Oklahoma, Canutt stopped doing stunts professionally and focused on directing second units—crews that filmed action scenes, stunts, and other scenes that didn't necessarily need the main cast members. He directed some of the most exciting and iconic action scenes in movie history, which culminated in Ben-Hur's renowned chariot race. In 1966, he received a special Oscar for his contributions to cinema. Joe Canutt and Tap Canutt, two of his children, followed him into the stunt industry. Yakima Canutt, the most renowned and esteemed stuntman in history, passed away in 1986.Listen now to learn more about this famous Evergreen State born stuntman!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

In this episode, I spoke with author Andrew Patrick Nelson about his book "Still In The Saddle: The Hollywood Western, 1969 -1980". By the end of the 1960s, the Hollywood West of Tom Mix, Randolph Scott, and even John Wayne was passé—or so the story goes. Many film historians and critics have argued that movies portraying a mythic American West gave way to revisionist films that influential filmmakers such as Sam Peckinpah and Robert Altman made as violent critiques of the Western's “golden years.”University of Oklahoma Press

One of Hollywood's most underrated figures, Art Mix (real name George Kesterson) appeared in over 200 film shorts and features, many of them westerns. In fact, some small-town exhibitors opted to show cheaper films starring Art Mix if they couldn't afford expensive ones starring the more well known Tom Mix.
While researching her acclaimed book, “American Dude Ranch,” historian and archivist Lynn Downey did a deep dive into how cinema has portrayed dude ranches. It all started back in 1918 with the movie “Hell Cat,” filmed at Valley Ranch in Cody, WY. Lynn chats with Russell and Alan about dude ranch films that many of us have come to know and love, as well as those that may not yet be on our western radar.
One of the first celluloid cowboys, Tom Mix played an important role in defining the western as the genre emerged at the birth of American cinema.

Strange anomalies arise when viewing the latest shooting in Buffalo from a distance. Initially, the shooter was identified as someone completely different. Strange syncs and twilight language emerges. Echoes of the Buffalo shaman from Jan 6th, all the way back to Buffalo Bill (see yesterdays show) and the scripting of the American West with his traveling western shows that lead right up to the beginning of cinema, where Tom Mix becomes America's first cowboy star, whose cabin is located in the infamous, Laurel Canyon, where the freak scene of the 1960's is born. Of course, Tom Mix would have to be born on Jan 6th to bring it all back home.

Scott McGee, senior director of Original Productions at Turner Classic Movies, joins the podcast to discuss his new book "Danger on the Silver Screen: 50 Films Celebrating Cinema's Greatest Stunts." We start with the earliest stunts of silent film stars Douglas Fairbanks, Tom Mix, Yakima Canutt, and Buster Keaton before highlighting the chariot race in "Ben Hur," likely the most spectacular stunt ever created. And then we talk about cars, motorcycles, and the development of James Bond. With the '80s came "Mad Max," "Raider of the Lost Ark," "Romancing the Stone," and more James Bond. Ultimately "The Matrix" brings the discussion up to the modern era with a mix of CGI and practical stunts. And we end with a discussion of some of the top action franchises of the last twenty years and action stars Charlize Theron, Matt Damon, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Craig, and Tom Cruise.Purchase Danger on the Silver ScreenFollow Scott on Twitter @jscottmcgee
In the midst of a Western revival — which included big hits like "Silverado" and "Pale Rider" — came this 80's flick, a loving parody of the genre and a send-up of Hollywood. It has become a landmark in comedy collaboration, starring three comedy legends under the direction of a bonafide hit movie director with a script co-written by the mastermind of Saturday Night Live. So grab your sombrero and saddle up your horses for a trip to Santa Poco as Tim Williams and special guest co-host, stand-up comedian Danny Johnson, to discuss “Three Amigos” from 1986 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The silent movie sequence in the film was shot in authentic, Old Hollywood environs. The production used the oldest still-standing exterior set on the Universal Studios lot, which had been built for an early 20th-century Western starring the once popular but now largely forgotten Tom Mix. As director John Landis recalled, during filming, trams full of visitors on the Universal Studios tour would come through "every ten minutes, and the boys would shoot their six-guns and dance for them." The musical score is provided by Elmer Bernstein, who also did the rousing score from "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) which this film parodies. The Video & DVD Guide said this film was a "send-up of "The Cowboy Star" (1936), while Halliwell's said that it was a "take-off of 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960)". Moreover, Movies on TV & Videocassette said that it was a "spoof of Mexican bandit movies", while Rating the Movies said that the picture was a "spoof of B-westerns”.
