On the Feb. 24, 2026, edition of the PodKaz, hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski from USCHO.com talk about the first weekend of the NCAA women's hockey playoffs in two conferences and the final week of the regular season in three others.Union generated the first upset, and it was a big one: The Garnet Chargers are the 12th seed in ECAC Hockey but they knocked off fifth seed Clarkson on the road last Friday. In Atlantic Hockey, Syracuse went on the road to eliminate RIT in the first double-overtime game of the 2026 postseason.Minnesota Duluth also had success on the road in the final weekend of the WCHA regular season, beating Minnesota in overtime twice behind goals from Tova Henderson. Wisconsin secured the WCHA title with a victory over St. Cloud State on the final day.Northeastern beat UConn in overtime in a potential Hockey East playoff preview. Also, here's the between-the-legs overtime winner by Vermont's Oona Havana against New Hampshire on Saturday.Franklin Pierce emerged on top of the NEWHA standings after a victory over Saint Anselm on Friday and an Assumption overtime loss to Sacred Heart. Our second segment looks back at the Olympic women's hockey tournament and the gold medal won by the U.S. in a 2-1 overtime victory over Canada. Switzerland took the bronze by beating Sweden in overtime. And we finish with a look ahead to the second weekend of the playoffs for ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey and the opening round for the WCHA, Hockey East and NEWHA.The PodKaz is a production of USCHO.com. In the PodKaz for Feb. 17, 2026, hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski from USCHO.com open with a look back on a wild finish to the ECAC Hockey regular season. Yale and Princeton tied for the championship after Saturday games that both involved extra-attacker goals.No. 2 Ohio State solidified a top-two spot in the WCHA with a home sweep of No. 3 Minnesota, and the Buckeyes still have hope of passing No. 1 Wisconsin on the final weekend. The race for the NEWHA championship is going down to the final weekend, with Franklin Pierce, Assumption and Saint Anselm having chances at the title.RIT earned its first win at No. 4 Penn State in 12 years with an overtime triumph last Friday, and Syracuse earned a tie and shootout win over Mercyhurst to add some intrigue to the upcoming playoffs.Minnesota, Penn State and Northeastern didn't lose ground in the NPI despite losses last week. Our second segment includes a discussion of the upcoming Olympic gold-medal game. The U.S. and Canada will play in the final for the seventh time in eight tournaments, and even though the Americans have won each time the countries have played this season, Thursday's game still feels like a toss-up.We wrap up this week's show with a look ahead to the start of the postseason in ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey and other important games around the country. The PodKaz is a production of USCHO.com. Lionel dissects the true history of Washington's Birthday and ranks the worst U.S. presidents, including the "drunk" Franklin Pierce and the allegedly gay James Buchanan. He defends Yale professor David Gelernter against "militant atheists" while debating the limits of Darwinian evolution versus Intelligent Design. The conversation shifts to the modern surveillance state, the "Panopticon" of tracking data, and skepticism surrounding the media frenzy over the Savannah Guthrie missing person case. Finally, Lionel analyzes Barack Obama's "slip-up" regarding extraterrestrials and takes vivid listener calls about UFO sightings, ultimately asking: If aliens exist, do they have original sin? The PodKaz for Feb. 20, 2026, has hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski looking back on a series split between No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 2 Ohio State last weekend in Madison. The Buckeyes looked great at the start but the Badgers rebounded like they have so well over the last few seasons. The race for the ECAC Hockey championship is coming down to the final weekend of the regular season. The top six teams are separated by 6½ points, with first-place Princeton leading Yale by two points. The Tigers missed a chance to stretch their lead by losing to Harvard on Saturday.Holy Cross had a rough week in Hockey East, losing to Boston College and New Hampshire to extend its winless skid to four games. Northeastern and UConn needed overtime to get past Vermont and Providence, respectively. The NEWHA chase tightened up with Saint Anselm losing in overtime twice at Long Island, leaving the door open for Franklin Pierce and Assumption to close in.We also look at the Olympics, where the U.S. and Canada are set to meet in preliminary-round play Tuesday. And we finish up with a glance at some of the important clashes ahead in NCAA women's hockey, including meetings between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Minnesota and the ECAC Hockey slate. The PodKaz is a production of USCHO.com. fWotD Episode 3137: Jefferson Davis Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 6 December 2025, is Jefferson Davis.Jefferson F. Davis (June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was an American politician who served as the only president of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. He represented Mississippi in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party before the American Civil War. He was the United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857.Davis, the youngest of ten children, was born in Fairview, Kentucky, but spent most of his childhood in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. His eldest brother Joseph Emory Davis secured the younger Davis's appointment to the United States Military Academy. Upon graduating, he served six years as a lieutenant in the United States Army. After leaving the army in 1835, Davis married Sarah Knox Taylor, daughter of future president Zachary Taylor. Sarah died from malaria three months after the wedding. Davis became a cotton planter, building Brierfield Plantation in Mississippi on his brother Joseph's land and eventually owning as many as 113 slaves. In 1845, Davis married Varina Howell. During the same year, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving for one year. From 1846 to 1847, he fought in the Mexican–American War as the colonel of a volunteer regiment. He was appointed to the United States Senate in 1847, resigning to unsuccessfully run for governor of Mississippi. In 1853, President Franklin Pierce appointed him Secretary of War. After Pierce's administration ended in 1857, Davis returned to the Senate. He resigned in 1861 when Mississippi seceded from the United States.During the Civil War, Davis guided the Confederacy's policies and served as its commander in chief. When the Confederacy was defeated in 1865, Davis was captured, arrested for alleged complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, accused of treason, and imprisoned at Fort Monroe. He was released without trial after two years. Immediately after the war, Davis was often blamed for the Confederacy's defeat, but after his release from prison, the Lost Cause of the Confederacy movement considered him to be a hero. In the late 19th and the 20th centuries, his legacy as Confederate leader was celebrated in the South. In the 21st century, his leadership of the Confederacy has been seen as constituting treason, and he has been frequently criticized as a supporter of slavery and racism. Many of the memorials dedicated to him throughout the United States have been removed. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:10 UTC on Saturday, 6 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Jefferson Davis on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Amy.

How did the politicians in Washington D.C. push America towards the one thing they wanted to avoid: all out Civil War? We look at how the violent and frat house culture that existed within D.C. played its part, and at the chronic failure of leadership from those sitting atop of this steaming mess - the Presidents. We're joined by returning guest (from our Franklin Pierce episode) Brian C Neumann, author of 'Bloody Flag of Anarchy: Unionism in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis' and managing director of the John L. (00:00-26:07) – Query & Company opens on a Thursday with Jake Query and producer Eddie Garrison discussing tonight’s NFL Draft. Jake reveals his early prediction as to what will happen tonight based off of comments made by Chris Ballard on Monday. Also, they create a bingo card of NFL Draft cliches and buzz words that will be mentioned frequently tonight. (26:07-43:02) – Tony East from Forbes Sports and Locked On Pacers makes his weekly visit on Query & Company to provide his opinion on what changes the Milwaukee Bucks should make for game three tomorrow night. Additionally, Tony assesses how the Pacers can retain Myles Turner this offseason and explains how Turner’s lack of rebounds doesn’t mean he’s not helping the team in the rebounding category. (43:02-46:11) – Hour number one concludes with Jake and Eddie giving away a pair of tickets for a listener to attend the Sonsio Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a couple of weeks! (46:11-1:11:26) – The IndyStar’s Joel A. Erickson makes an appearance on Query & Company on draft day to rank the scenarios that Jake provides him from most likely to least likely. Joel also believes that Chris Ballard has tipped his hand a little bit with his comments at the NFL Combine, Owners Meetings, and on Monday at his pre-draft press conference. Finally, he weighs in on when the Colts pick will be announced and answers some trivia questions about his hometown in Wisconsin. (1:11:26-1:18:29) – Jake and Eddie shift the conversation back to the Indiana Pacers by previewing tomorrow’s game three in Milwaukee. They wonder what kind of changes the Bucks will make to try and overcome a two-game deficit against Indiana. (1:18:29-1:27:03) – Hour number two concludes with Jake asking Eddie if he figured out who Franklin Pierce was. It leads to a conversation about obscure presidents, and Eddie strikes a nerve with Jake. (1:27:03-1:55:51) – Voice of the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Taylor, joins Jake Query on the show to provide his take on tonight’s NFL Draft. He believes that the Colts might be better off at tight end than some people will think, notes a couple of prospects he finds intriguing that could be in play for the Colts at fourteen, evaluates if the selection of a tight end would play in favor of Daniel Jones over Anthony Richardson, and weighs in on the NFL Draft buzz words/cliches that will be mentioned tonight. (1:55:51-2:04:27) – For the second time on today’s show, Jake and Eddie give away a pair of tickets for a listener to attend the Sonsio Grand Prix at IMS! Turns out that this winner is a huge IndyCar fan and talks about some of his favorite races that he has attended. (2:04:27-2:08:57) – Today’s show closes with JMV joining Jake from Taylor’s Pub in Nora! They preview JMV’s show and the first round of tonight’s NFL Draft!Support the show: https://1075thefan.com/query-and-company/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The sports crew (Dylan, Zach, Kody and Aaron) break down the first round of the state football playoffs and ask if the seeding committees got it right. Adna vs. Napavine is the most intriguing game on the schedule. Franklin Pierce scores a lot of points but one panelist is convinced it won't be enough. Guest Jonathan Mandledove talks about his long, winding and at times complicated relationship with the game of basketball and why it means everything to him today. The 7-footer was a member of a top 5 recruiting class at UConn, suiting up alongside six future NBA players. But his career didn't work out the way he dreamed, as he left Storrs, Conn. after three seasons of playing without a degree or NBA contract. Over the next decade he'd fall back in love with the sport as a coach, return to campus to get his degree and join the college coaching ranks, where he currently serves as as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's teams at Franklin Pierce. This is truly an incredible conversation.
Jack is a great human & basketball player, he and I talk about his journey from being under recruited, having his freshman year taken away by covid, winning a national championship the next year and then back to back conference championships along with all the struggles and hardship in between After SMCC Jack takes us through his experience at Franklin Pierce which a NCAA Division 2 school in NH in the NE10, he played there for one semester and shortly transferred to UNE (University of New England) to finish out the year and why that change was so important to him and why it was such a better fit Jack provides some great insight for any players listening and anyone in general!

In the wake of President Zachary Taylor's sudden death, Millard Fillmore signs into law the Compromise of 1850, the so called “final settlement” on the issue of slavery. But the Compromise has unintended consequences. As regional interests trump party loyalty, the second Two Party System begins to crumble giving rise to five third parties and two nearly indistinguishable candidates from both sides of the aisle: Whig candidate General Winfield Scott and Democrat candidate Franklin Pierce. *** To listen to the entire series—all 59 episodes—right now and ad-free, become a subscriber at IntoHistory.com, a channel of history podcasts made just for history lovers like you. The 2021 season witnessed the Flyers' impressive 12-4 conference play record, securing the second seed in the postseason tournament. Notably, the team displayed offensive prowess with 69 home runs, the third-highest in program history, and a formidable pitching performance, striking out 436 opposing hitters. King's impact extends beyond the field, with two Flyers selected in the MLB Draft in July 2021, marking a historic moment for the program. This achievement, coupled with Dayton's improved conference winning percentage, showcases King's ability to foster both individual player development and team success. With a coaching career spanning two decades, King has amassed a remarkable record of 807-491-4 (.621), demonstrating his coaching prowess at both Franklin Pierce University and UMass-Boston. His tenure at Franklin Pierce was nothing short of legendary, securing 10 NE-10 Conference Championships, seven NCAA Northeast Regional appearances, and seven trips to the NCAA Division II College World Series. The accolades continued with numerous Coach of the Year honors and the development of 25 MLB draft picks. King's influence extends beyond the college ranks, with experience coaching in USA Baseball and the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. His commitment to player development and success is evident in the 85-spot jump in the RPI rankings during his inaugural season at Dayton. Join us as we explore Jayson King's journey, from his playing days at Framingham State College to his coaching career, family life with wife Missy and children Katie and Justin, and the enduring impact he's had on the world of college baseball. Don't miss this insightful conversation with a coach whose passion and dedication have left an indelible mark on the game.
S2E16 - Tune in as Trent and Marissa break down the infamous Kansas-Nebraska Act and its bloody consequences. Signed into law by hot loser Franklin Pierce in 1854, it allowed the people themselves to decide whether or not to allow slavery in the territories. What could possibly go wrong? Well, just voter fraud, the beating of a congressman, broadswords, fleeing governors, killing sprees, the death of a political party, the birth of a political party… and the inevitability of civil war. The wife of fourteenth president Franklin Pierce, Jane Appleton Pierce often gets a bad rap. Seen as a woman who was unwilling to support her husband's political efforts, Jane Pierce definitely lacked excitement in serving in the position of First Lady. But she was also a woman who lived with chronic pain and suffered tremendous loss. Join me this week as I dive into the life of Jane Pierce. And when you are done, be sure to let me know where you fall: was Pierce a bad wife? Or simply a damaged one? A man who so desperately wished to keep his preferred political party intact, Pierce made questionable decisions that arguably pushed the country further towards war. So why does he get such a bad grade?Join me this week as I look at the life and presidency of Franklin Pierce. Congress is back in session following its summer recess. Although many used the time off to relax and recharge, lawmakers are picking up right where they left off. FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram summarizes FBI Director Christopher Wray's testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, where he defended his record after lawmakers accused the Bureau of conducting politically motivated investigations. Later Chad explains why Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was removed from the House Freedom Caucus and details Tuesday's Senate investigative subcommittee hearing regarding the PGA Tour's partnership with Saudi-backed LIV Golf. New Hampshire has only successfully produced one President, Franklin Pierce. However, the "Live Free or Die" state has made a name for itself as one of the most influential states in the Presidential primaries. New Hampshire state law dictates the primary should be held on the second Tuesday of March or at least seven days before any other primary in the country. However, this first-in-the-nation status is being challenged by the Democratic National Committee, whose proposed revamped calendar puts South Carolina at the front of the primary calendar. New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan, weighs in on how the new schedule will affect New Hampshire's status as a battleground state and explains the DNC's reasoning for changing the calendar. This Sidebar episode starts with my notes from my trip to Cuba "in support of the Cuban people," one of the exceptions to the general ban on Americans traveling there. Those notes lead to a story from American - Cuban relations: Three "filibustering" invasions of Cuba launched from the United States in the 1840s, the strange American origin of the flag of Cuba, the election of Franklin Pierce on the platform of acquiring Cuba for the United States, and the curious swearing in of his Vice President, William Rufus King, on a sugar plantation in Cuba.
