The 4 nations of the UK: What can we learn from one another?

Rethinking Education

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2025 111:43

In this special episode, Dr James Mannion and The Real David Cameron take a look at the education systems in the four nations of the United Kingdom and ask: what can we learn from one another? Graham Donaldson has been central to development in Scotland as chief inspector, advising government as well as leading on quality assurance. And remarkably he has also been central to the development of Curriculum for Wales in the role of chief adviser to the Welsh Government. Tony Gallagher, from Queens University Belfast, has made a massive contribution to education in Northern Ireland and internationally. He is best known for his work on education in divided societies, a subject that, sadly, continues to be of vital importance. Lena Carter is the headteacher of two schools in Scotland, Glassary and Tayvallich, in Argyll and Bute, a challenge that Lena embraces with real energy, passion and a tremendous commitment to meeting every pupil's needs. And Lucy Kirkham teaches geography at Bassaleg Comprehensive school near Newport in Wales. Lucy has a considerable track record in Environmental Education and has been a real driving force behind a series of conferences where young people can engage with the climate emergency on their terms. Education is the key to progress Education is the key to moving our society forward, says Tony Gallagher in the latest Forward Together podcast interview. But that has to mean much more than encouraging as many students as possible to go to university and obtain a degree. Our society has become fixated with university education, at the expense of school pupils who do not aspire to higher education.More has to be done to support children from deprived families, to encourage them through careers guidance and to promote aspiration. Support has to begin in children's early years, before they start attending school. In order to provide a more inclusive education system, it is necessary that there is a better understanding of the experience of school pupils who do not go on to university, says Tony. He is frustrated at the lack of data collected on school leavers who do not choose an academic route - many of whom become alienated from the labour market. We know little about their progress through life, making it difficult to take the action necessary to assist them, or improve post-primary education for those who leave school without good qualifications or skills. We need to reflect on the education system we have in Northern Ireland, including the extent to which schools co-operate with each other. It is essential that the learning communities that provide a wider subject choice at sixth form level work effectively.Tony is professor of education at Queen's University. The Holywell Trust Forward Together podcasts are funded by the Community Relations Council’s Media Grant Scheme. Disclaimer: This project has received support from the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council which aims to promote a pluralist society characterised by equity, respect for diversity, and recognition of interdependence. This week in anguish: - Tristan had five teensy, manageable little talking points, and Ardella claimed to have nothing at all to say. The Canucks who aren't injured are hibernating. This one clocks in at one second under 90 minutes.  - We better-get-to-know another Tyler (Graovac) and another Travis (Boyd), but the real prize is the Växjö Laker we met along the way. - We're sorry, Tim Peel, but this story is really about Colin Campbell's emails, the dynamic trio of Tony Gallagher, Jason Botchford, and Willie Mitchell, and the eternally contemptible sportswriters of New England circa 2011. - This week's One Timers include digging into Andy Van Hellemond's debit card situation, a historic night for three members of the Ontario Reign, and washing our hands once and for all of Rasmus Andersson.   Thanks for listening! Hockey hall of fame member Tony Gallagher says that he's not convinced that all NHL players playing in the NHL's postseason are fully invested in playing in the tournament. Tony also said that this perceived lack of intensity could benefit a young hungry Canucks team.

Ed Vaizey, minister for UK Culture, Communications and Creative Industries is today asking senior figures in TV, film and arts to explain the lack of diversity in their industries. We talk to two people attending that meeting; playwright and actor Kwame Kwei Armah and senior TV executive Pat Younge, and ask the founder of the Cultural Diversity Network, Clive Jones, why he thinks black, asian and minority ethnic representation in the creative world is low and is actually going down.Tony Gallagher, editor of The Daily Telegraph, left the newspaper yesterday as part of an editorial restructure. The Telegraph Media Group said that Mr Gallagher was leaving the company as the business "moves to the next phase of its digital transformation". The newspaper has introduced new apps and subscription packages, and last year began using a metered model for access to its internet edition, which gives readers a numbers of articles for free. So, what further changes does it want to make to remain viable? With Birds of a Feather, writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran bucked the trend and found a formula to create a much-loved ratings smash. The British sitcom placed as its heart the adventures of a group of female lead characters; and now Dorian, Sharon and Tracy are back on our screens. The new series, being shown on ITV, has been the highest rating comedy launch on ITV in over a decade, with every episode drawing audiences way above the slot average. Laurence Marks joins Steve to discuss the success of the new series, the public's enduring love of the original Essex girls, and his views on why the biggest barrier to successful comedy is fear.Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
