The Mary Robinson Centre and University of Galway, along with partner Mayo County Council, will host the third Mary Robinson Climate and Nature Conference. The conference will bring together climate justice advocates, scientists, activists, community groups and policymakers to address local, national and global challenges and opportunities in relation to climate justice and nature conservation. Centering on the theme "Courage in Crisis", the annual conference will take place in Ballina, Co Mayo, on May 26th and 27th where the former president grew up, and where the new Mary Robinson Centre is located. Mary Robinson Centre and University of Galway host 2025 climate and nature conference Mary Robinson said: "The Mary Robinson Nature and Climate Conference will centre on a call to courage in the face of the climate and nature crisis, a crisis that touches every part of our shared world. In these urgent times, it is through meitheal, the Irish tradition of coming together in collective effort, that we find strength, purpose and hope. Only by standing together can we meet this moment with the boldness it demands. I'm looking forward to being in community in my hometown of Ballina, imagining together what each of us can do to build a better future." Along with Mary Robinson, the conference will feature a distinguished lineup of Irish and international speakers including: Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, DCU; Anja Murray, ecologist, policy analyst, broadcaster and author; Dearbhla Richardson, youth climate justice activist; Dr Elaine McGoff, An Taisce; Dr Gerard McCarthy, physical oceanographer and climate scientist; Professor Hannah Daly, UCC; Professor John Barry, Queens University Belfast; Professor Navjot Bhullar, University of Canberra, Australia; Tom Arnold, Ireland Africa Rural Development Committee; Dr Omnia El Omrani, Global Climate and Health Alliance; and Laura Cook, Project Dandelion. The conference will feature a diverse range of workshops, panel discussions, walks, music and art, and aims to create space for people to connect, share ideas, and collaborate, with several of the conference events open to the public. Dr Caitríona Carlin, School of Natural Sciences and Ryan Institute at University of Galway and conference co-chair, said: "It was uplifting to hear Mary Robinson recognise the interconnections between climate and biodiversity, when she changed the name of the conference to climate and nature in 2024. This is the first year that the conference formally addresses climate and nature and we are grateful to the funders and sponsors who have supported us. The conference enables us to acknowledge that actions for climate, for nature are also for us. We are part of the environment, and in finding common ground, we can make space for courageous conversations and actions to meet the multiple challenges ahead." Dr Sinéad Sheehan, School of Psychology and Ryan Institute, University of Galway and conference co-chair, said: "This year, while we are bringing the conference to Ballina, we also want to bring Ballina to the conference! There's a great programme of events planned around the conference, including an art exhibition at the Mary Robinson Centre, a 'Connecting With Trees' walk in Belleek Woods on Sunday, and an eco-gathering on Tuesday featuring groups working on climate and nature. We're also looking forward to a special 'Oíche Cultúr agus Craic' on Monday night with music, poetry and storytelling - it should be a brilliant few days for Ballina and the wider community." Dr Alma Clavin, Lecturer in Sustainability at University of Galway and conference co-chair, said: "This conference creates a necessary courageous space for those activated in climate and nature work to connect with each other and new ideas. The conference is taking place in a county that has a fantastic network of community-led climate and sustainability initiatives and a distinctive biodiversity-rich landscape. Join me for My Master Cooper Chat with Darren Leonard. Darren is a Master Cooper, not Head Cooper, above in Dair Nua Cooperage in Foxford, Co Mayo. He is a Master Cooper because he has successfully qualified an apprentice underneath him. He is passionate about the craft of coopering and retaining the Irish traditions of coopering that Ger Buckley, Midleton Master Cooper, has "legacied" into the small band of coopers and trainees in Ireland. The whole cooper community in Ireland leaves me in awe at their skill and passion for the heritage of the craft. Darren himself apprenticed under John Neely, a famous Scottish cooper who plied his trade in Ireland, up until his untimely passing in 2018. It's so great to see Darren continuing on and building a legacy in Irish Coopering. Vodafone Ireland has signed a new Corporate Power Purchasing Agreement (CPPA) with energy supplier Flogas, along with its infrastructure partner Vantage Towers. This agreement allows Vodafone to directly purchase renewable electricity from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm located in Mayo. Vodafone is the first telco in Ireland to sign a CPPA. The investment of €6million is part of the company's sustainability goals to achieve net zero across its full value chain by 2040. Combined with other agreements Vodafone has in place, 100% of its Irish operations are matched with certificates of renewable energy sources in Ireland. The energy secured within this agreement gives Vodafone access to clean, high quality and affordable renewable electricity for its extensive network of cables that deliver mobile and fixed services to customers across Ireland. As part of this agreement, the company's infrastructure partners, Vantage Towers will also receive renewable energy from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm. Amanda Nelson, CEO at Vodafone Ireland said: "We are proud of the steps we're taking to not only support our customers to be greener but also green our own operations. Today's announcement is an investment in Ireland and its renewable energy industry. This is a significant step towards our own ambitious net zero targets.'' Brian McHugh, Managing Director at Vantage Towers Ireland said: "Vantage Towers' infrastructure network is totally powered by renewable energy, in line with our global ESG agenda. Sustainability is a necessity, and this agreement with Flogas is a further commitment to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment, and a continued investment in Ireland's natural generating capability.'' Pat Brett, Director at Derrynadivva Wind Farm Ltd said: "We are thrilled that Derrynadivva Wind Farm in Co Mayo continues to play a pivotal role in Ireland's transition to a sustainable energy future. By delivering clean, renewable wind energy to some of the nation's largest companies, we are not only helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also supporting these businesses in their commitment to more efficient and responsible energy consumption." James Temple, Renewables Manager at Flogas, said: "The CPPA with Vodafone Ireland underscores the accelerating commitment of Irish companies to increase their use of carbon-free energy and lead in renewable energy adoption. As a leading provider of clean energy CPPAs, Flogas is dedicated to enhancing the economic feasibility of renewable projects and advancing Ireland's transition to a low-carbon economy." Vodafone's sustainability strategy also focuses on reducing its energy consumption. In Ireland, the company uses an Intelligent Energy Management System. This is a system in which a machine learning algorithm across the 4G network analyses traffic patterns in real-time, allowing Vodafone reduce congestion and ultimately reduce energy consumption by 10 to 15%. Vodafone Ireland also provides ways for customers be more sustainable including 'Fix & Go' for repairs and upgrades to extend the lifecycle of phones, as well as eSIMs which reduce carbon emissions by removing the need to manufacture and ship plastic, and a variety of eco accessories. In 2022, Vodafone became the first telco in Ireland to offer a device trade-in service which has been very well received by customers, with over 35,000 devices returned to Vodafone to date. The initiative offers customers up to €400 for old smartphone devices which customers can use as store credit towards the purchase of a new device or receive payment directly into their bank account. After the device is traded in Vodafone ensures each device is refurbed, recycled or repurposed, as part of our commitment to a circular economy.

Gavin O'Callaghan reports from Westport in Co Mayo.
It's a heavyweight special today as we're joined by Ireland's top man in the showbiz division, undefeated Dublin banger Thomas ‘The Bomber' Carty. Carty was on with us three years ago as a 1-0 pro and since then his picked up some momentum. He's fought at the O2 in London, the Nottingham Arena, Wembley Arena and York Hall in the UK. And he's managed to fulfil part one of the pro dream by boxing on huge cards back home – twice at the 3Arena on the Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron cards, and a trip out west to fight alongside his Celtic Warrior brothers – and manager Dillian Whyte – in Castlebar, Co Mayo. He's also won a belt in the form of the BUI Celtic title and oh, he started a business too. Next up, on September 20, is another outing at Dublin's 3Arena, this time supporting another boxer who's getting a homecoming in the shape of Callum Walsh. Argentina's Jonathan Exequiel Vergara, who's won six and lost one so far, will be in the opposite corner on what's sure to be a fun night at the fights. With the 6ft 4in southpaw back on another major card at the 3Arena, we ask if there's any truth to the rumour that it's in the venue's contract that if there's no Carty, there's no party. We also look ahead to the undercard featuring the Craig O'Brien v Edward Donovan and Emmet Brennan v Kevin Cronin derby fights, and upcoming heavyweight slobberknockers featuring his sparring partners Anthony Joshua (v Daniel Dubois) and Tyson Fury (v Oleksandr Usyk II).
