Josh Howell, LEI President, Mark Reich, LEI Chief Engineer Strategy, and Art Smalley discuss the four basic types of problem-solving. Art is a well-known expert in leadership, management, and the Toyota Way. He worked at Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan; helped to transform Donnelly Corp. in Michigan; was a consultant with McKinsey & Co.; and has authored several award-winning books, including Four Types of Problems. The trio set out to discuss how the framework of the four types of problems maps onto the lean management system explained in Mark's recent book about hoshin kanri, Managing on Purpose, as well as daily management in Toyota, leadership, culture, and other related topics. The systematic intersection of these topics is a complex subject beyond just the simpler notion of “tools.” Art and Mark share respective viewpoints from their time at Toyota in Japan and what made the system so unique while trying to connect the dots of four types of problems, hoshin kanri, and other areas. Josh kicks off the podcast by asking Art and Mark to examine in detail troubleshooting — the most frequent and possibly most misunderstood type of problem-solving. A good troubleshooting environment involves quickly attacking known problems with known solutions to get operations back to normal (i.e., how to mitigate issues that prevent achievement of near-term goals). They also review troubleshooting's relationship with the other types of problem-solving and the “flavors” of the types — gap from standard (how to prevent a problem from recurring by eliminating its underlying root causes), target condition (kaizen to elevate the standard), and open-ended (innovations and breakthrough thinking) — as well as the complex interaction of the four types with daily management and hoshin kanri. Nissan and Honda announced on March 15 that they will work together in developing electric vehicles and auto intelligence technology, sectors where Japanese automakers have fallen behind. The chief executives of Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. appeared together at a news conference in Tokyo to announce that Japan's second and third biggest automakers will look into areas with a potential for collaboration. The details of the non-binding agreement are still being worked out, both sides said. The executives said the companies will develop core technologies together, but their products will remain different. Nissan Chief Executive Makoto Uchida stressed that speed is crucial for the companies in developing technological solutions. Honda President Toshihiro Mibe said the companies share common values and could create “synergies” in facing their formidable rivals. The world's automakers are rapidly shifting toward electric vehicles, focusing on batteries and motors instead of gas engines, as concerns grow about emissions and climate change. But Japanese automakers have fallen behind rivals such as Tesla of the U.S. and BYD of China in developing EVs, partly because they have historically been so successful with combustion engine vehicles. Toyota Motor Corp., the world's largest automaker, has often said the world is not ready for a complete shift to EVs, in part because of the lack of a charging infrastructure, and instead has pushed hybrids, which have a gas engine in addition to an electric motor. But Toyota is also expected to aggressively deliver on an EV push in the coming years. Nissan is relatively ahead in EVs among Japanese automakers because it was among the first to come out with an EV with its Leaf, which went on sale in late 2010. High expectations for the Nissan-Honda agreement were reflected in sharp increases in the stock prices of both companies on March 14 after a Japanese media report said such a deal might be in the works. The executives said no mutual capital ownership is involved in the agreement for now, but the companies may look into the possibility down the road. “How we can raise our competitiveness is what we are determined to pursue,” Uchida said. In the meantime, standard container rates on transpacific routes are quadruple what they were a year ago. And that is before equipment surcharges and premiums for guaranteed loading are added. “Anyone paying the freight bills in 2020 though knows the true cost of shipping is much higher than even the recently increased rates,” Poskus said. “We expect that to only increase in 2021.” The unstoppable rise in container shipping costs is borne out by December figures recently announced by Taiwan's three major shipping companies — Evergreen Marine Corp, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp and Wan Hai Lines Ltd — which saw a record-breaking year-on-year surge of revenue at 58.8 percent, 35.19 percent and 75.71 percent respectively. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/01/18/2003750759 Next Article Topic: The world is dependent on Taiwan for semiconductors As China pushes the world to avoid official dealings with Taiwan, leaders across the globe are realizing just how dependent they have become on the island democracy. Taiwan is being courted for its capacity to make leading-edge computer chips. That is mostly down to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest foundry and go-to producer of chips for Apple Inc smartphones, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Taiwan's role in the world economy largely existed below the radar until it came to recent prominence as the auto industry suffered shortfalls in chips used for everything from parking sensors to reducing emissions. With carmakers including Germany's Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co of the US and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp forced to halt production and idle plants, Taiwan's importance has suddenly become too big to ignore. That is not to say Taiwan is the only player in the semiconductor supply chain. The US still holds dominant positions, notably in chip design and electronic software tools; ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands has a monopoly on the machines needed to fabricate the best chips; Japan is a key supplier of equipment, chemicals and wafers. However, as the emphasis shifts to ever smaller, more powerful chips that require less energy, TSMC is increasingly in a field of its own. It has also helped Taiwan form a comprehensive ecosystem around it: ASE Technology Holding is the world's top chip assembler, while MediaTek has become the largest smartphone chipset vendor. A big worry is that TSMC's chip factories could become collateral damage if China were to make good on threats to invade Taiwan if it moves toward independence. “Taiwan is the center of gravity of Chinese security policy,” said Mathieu Duchatel, director of the Asia program at the Institut Montaigne in Paris. Preserving the world's most advanced fabs “is in the interests of everyone.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/02/01/2003751534 Next Article Topic: Reinventing Workers for the Post-COVID Economy The nation's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will hinge to some extent on how quickly show managers can become electricians, whether taxi drivers can become plumbers, and how many cooks can manage software for a bank. This is likely to prove especially problematic for millions of low-paid workers in service industries like retailing, hospitality, building maintenance and transportation, which may be permanently impaired or fundamentally transformed. Automation, for one, will most likely accelerate as employers seek to protect their businesses from future pandemics. The challenge is not insurmountable. Yet despite scattered success stories, moving millions of workers into new occupations remains an enormous challenge. “We need a New Deal for skills,” said Amit Sevak, president of Revature, a company that hires workers, trains them to use digital tools and helps place them in jobs. “President Roosevelt deployed the massive number of workers unemployed in the Great Depression on projects that created many of the dams and roads and bridges we have. We need something like that.”

It's the last Friday before the big week and we're talking about some BTS info from the UAW side of labor talks. We also give a rounded look at EV news as we ramp up to our big week of experts and news releases next week at ASOTU CON. According to leaked messages from a top aide to UAW President, Shawn Fain, suggest the union aims to damage Detroit 3 automakers' reputations to "keep them wounded for months." Stellantis described UAW Communications Director Jonah Furman's comments as "incredibly disturbing." Ford's Mark Truby said they're "disappointing, to say the least," emphasizing their commitment to bargaining in good faith. General Motors expressed concerns about the UAW's intention to cause prolonged disruption. In the leaked messages, Furman explained the union's approach, "They can basically price in an all-out strike... But if we can keep them wounded for months they don't know what to do... Plus we're breaking pattern and they're bargaining against each other for the first time in 70 years."Previously, the UAW has been accusing the OEMs of bargaining in bad faithThere is also talk about the proposal of the 32 hour work week, which helped to elicit great support from UAW members, never being considered as an actual goal, but more about bringing up a conversation about work-life balanceFain is scheduled to go on FB live today at 10am to announce the next wave of strike targets if significant progress hasn't been madeEV Update:According to a Nikkei newspaper report, Toyota Motor Corp. is set to accelerate its EV production, aiming for an annual output of over 600,000 EVs by 2025 marking a significant uptick from their sales of fewer than 25,000 EVs worldwide last year. The automaker's previously stated objectives are to sell 1.5 million EVs every year by 2026 and to achieve sales of 3.5 million (roughly a third of its current global volume) by 2030.Fleet management and rental company, Ryder, has begun deploying the first of its 4,000 BrightDrop electric vans across four key US cities. It's the first day of August and believe it or not, it's back to school time for some! Today we talk about Toyota's climbing Q2 results, some major heat related car problems in the south, as well as a Mr. Beast lawsuit that starts with a story. Toyota Motor Corp. nearly doubled its operating profit to $7.75 billion in the latest quarter, fueled by semiconductor shipments and strong sales in major markets. However, the company is concerned about the weaker performance in North America, which is affecting its ability to invest in electric vehicle production.Toyota Motor Corp. nearly doubled its operating profit in the last quarter due to increased supply from semiconductor shipments and strong sales in key markets, especially in Japan. The operating profit rose to $7.75 billion, up from $4.00 billion a year earlier.North America margins sat at 3% while Europe was at 6.3% and Japan at 14% leading to an overall margin of 10.6%, up from 6.8% last yearThe company maintains its forecast for record production, global sales, and operating profit, despite uncertainty in the U.S. market. Toyota's outlook calls for production of Toyota and Lexus brand vehicles to climb to a record 10.1 million vehicles in the current fiscal year, with global retail sales expected to reach a record 11.38 million unitsThe historic heatwaves in Texas are leading to unexpected vehicle breakdowns, according to mechanics and technicians from Bosch. In addition to common issues like dead car batteries and flat tires due to the extreme heat, newer problems are also emerging. Rubber compounds as well as the actual plastics in windshield wipers are breaking down, leading to scratches on the glass. Doc Watson, the Bosch training manager, said, "You're driving around in 112° temperature, you've got heat reflecting off the glass, and that causes the rubber components of a wiper blade to break down.”The high temperatures are negatively affecting car brakes as well. The heat causes the moisture trapped in the brake fluid within the master cylinder to expand, leading to a loss of brake feel, or "brake fade."The YouTube star, Mr. Beast (aka Jimmy Donaldson) is growing up and has lawyered up. He and his company, Beast Investments, is filing a lawsuit against his business partner, Virtual Dining Concepts, over the quality of his branded food line, MrBeast Burger. Citing 'inedible' food and damaged reputation, Donaldson seeks to terminate the business relationship, pointing to issues of late deliveries, unbranded packaging, and even missing ordered items."The suit alleges that Virtual Dining Concepts prioritized expansion over quality control, leading to food quality that was consistently poor and damaging to MrBeast's brand. Negative reviews cited in the lawsuit include descriptors such as "revolting" and "likely the worst burger [they] have ever had.
