Auto Industry Faces Tariff Uncertainty & E.V. Adoption Challenges

Tariffs and E.V. adoption are two major headwinds facing the auto industry. Karl Brauer discusses the impact of tariff uncertainty on car sales and inventory. Despite initial demand surges, Brauer expects a pullback in May, citing "pull forward" sales and inventory normalization. E.V. adoption also lags behind expectations due to range anxiety, limited charging infrastructure, and higher upfront costs. General Motors (GM), Tesla (TSLA) and other E.V. pure-plays may feel the sting of waning consumer interest.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Data Privacy, Security, and Tech Trends in Early 2025 1. What was the scale of healthcare data breaches in the U.S. during 2024? In 2024, the U.S. healthcare sector experienced a massive surge in cyberattacks, with approximately 720 reported breaches compromising an estimated 186 million user records. This exposed a vast amount of sensitive information, including names, contact details, Social Security numbers, and medical histories. This is approximately 56% of the US population. 2. How did UnitedHealth handle its data breach notification, and what are the implications for affected individuals? UnitedHealth, specifically its subsidiary Change Healthcare, attempted to obscure its data breach notification webpage from search engines, making it difficult for the over 100 million affected individuals to learn about the incident. They used a “noindex” tag to keep it out of Google, burying the story of their breach. This led to widespread confusion and further distrust of the company. It also highlights how companies can use search engine optimization to hide breaches by burying the real stories. 3. What is GeoSpy, and what privacy concerns does it raise? GeoSpy is an AI tool that can accurately predict the location of photos based on features within the images, such as vegetation, architecture, and spatial relationships. Originally available to the public, it's now marketed to law enforcement and government agencies. This technology raises serious privacy concerns, as it can be used by stalkers or other malicious actors to geolocate individuals from publicly available photos. The tool is now available to law enforcement and enterprise users, and some versions of it are more powerful than what was offered to the public. 4. What restrictions were placed on General Motors (GM) regarding the sale of driving data? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banned GM and its subsidiary OnStar from selling customer geolocation and driving behavior data for five years. This action followed an investigation that revealed GM had been collecting and selling detailed driving information to insurance companies without obtaining explicit consent from vehicle owners. 5. What is the UK's new digital wallet app, and what types of documents will it support? The UK is launching a digital wallet app called GOV.UK Wallet, allowing citizens to store government-issued documents on their smartphones. Initially supporting veteran cards, it will expand to include driver's licenses in late 2025, with plans to add passports, marriage certificates, and benefit documents by 2027. 6. What security risks are associated with failed startups and "Sign in with Google" features? Former employees of failed startups using "Sign in with Google" features are vulnerable to data breaches. Hackers can exploit abandoned company domains and the associated Google login systems to access sensitive information stored in business software like Slack, Notion, and HR systems, including social security numbers. This vulnerability is particularly relevant to startups that used the ""Sign in with Google"" function. 7. What challenges did Amazon employees face following the mandatory return-to-office policy? Amazon's mandate for a full return to the office resulted in significant challenges for employees, including a shortage of desks and meeting rooms, overcrowded parking facilities, and an increase in workplace thefts. The policy has also been criticized for forcing employees into video calls that could have been easily conducted remotely, and some employees reported that there is a lack of trust amongst colleagues. 8. What are the $TRUMP and $MELANIA coins, and what controversies are surrounding them? Donald and Melania Trump introduced meme coins named $TRUMP and $MELANIA on the Solana blockchain. These coins quickly gained significant value, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest and market manipulation.

Plus, dealer sentiment is up now that we're past the election, and Google has announced a potentially massive breakthrough in quantum computing.General Motors (GM) has decided to shut down its Cruise robotaxi division after years of significant investment and high hopes. Once considered a $50 billion revenue opportunity by 2030, the move signals a shift in GM's strategic focus.GM shares briefly rose following the announcement, reflecting investor relief over reducing the estimated $10 billion spent on Cruise's development.Cruise employees were notified via Slack, linking to a press release titled “GM to refocus autonomous driving development on personal vehicles,” sparking frustration among the workforceGM plans to integrate some Cruise talent into its driver-assistance technology programs while doubling down on gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, which remain its profit drivers.CEO Mary Barra defended the decision, stating: “We looked at the amount of money to deploy a robotaxi business and to maintain that business… it's quite a bit of capital. A robotaxi business is not GM's core business.”The latest Q4 2024 Cox Automotive Dealer Sentiment Index (CADSI) brings a wave of optimism among U.S. auto dealers, reflecting improving confidence in the industry despite lingering challenges in the current market. The market outlook index rose to 54, a substantial leap from 42 in Q3, marking the largest quarterly surge in CADSI history. Dealers credit political clarity and potential economic measures like tax rebates for the boost.Franchised dealers are more optimistic (index 50) compared to independent used-only dealers (index 39).The top concerns for dealers in Q4 2024 are economic conditions (56%), high interest rates (52%), weak market conditions (37%), the political climate (35%), and rising expenses (33%).“The recent resolution of political uncertainty...has cleared the path for a more optimistic outlook on future auto market conditions,” said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive.Google has unveiled Willow, its latest quantum computing chip, claiming a monumental breakthrough in error correction and computation speed. However, experts remain cautious, pointing out that quantum computing still lacks practical, real-world applications.Willow can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take today's supercomputers 10 septillion years—far beyond the universe's age.Willow reduces errors exponentially as qubits (units of information in quantum computing, capable of existing as 0, 1, or a superposition of both simultaneously) scale, cracking a 30-year challenge in quantum error correction.Experts agree it's an exciting milestone but emphasize the need for a “ChatGPT moment” to unlockHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Today, we're talking about how GM has raised their 2024 guidance again, how Arkansas could be home to enough lithium to power all the world's EVs and how the FAA has issued its rules for air taxis.Show Notes with links:General Motors (GM) beat Wall Street's Q3 estimates, with shares surging 8%. Continued strong demand for trucks and SUVs drove the growth, while GM's revised 2024 profit outlook indicates industry resilience despite ongoing economic pressures.Adjusted earnings per share were at $2.96, surpassing the expected $2.43.Revenue hit $48.8 billion, outpacing forecasts of $44.6 billion and GM's stock jumped to a two-and-a-half-year high of $53.25.Strong SUV sales and cost cuts are expected to maintain dealer margins.EV sales are growing, but represent only 4% of U.S. deliveries."The consumer has held up remarkably well for us," said CFO Paul Jacobson.Researchers have found that southern Arkansas's Smackover Formation may hold up to 19 million tons of lithium, enough to meet global demand for car batteries nine times over by 2030. This discovery could have a significant impact on the EV market. The lithium is estimated to make up 36% to 136% of current U.S. reserves.ExxonMobil aims to start lithium production by 2027, supplying enough for over 1 million EVs annually by 2030.They are using dew direct lithium extraction technology that could be more environmentally friendly but remains largely unproven.Corporations are currently in a legal battle with landowners over mineral rights.Katherine Knierim, a hydrologist and the study's principal researcher estimates “there is enough dissolved lithium present in that region to replace US imports of lithium and more.”The FAA has released long-awaited final regulations for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking a major step toward the future of air travel, including air taxis and cargo delivery.eVTOL aircraft are the first new aircraft category since helicopters in 1940 and the new regulations cover pilot training, safe altitudes, and visibility standards.Pilot training will include single-flight control for powered-lift aircraft, simplifying instruction.Industry players like Joby Aviation and Archer plan to launch air taxi services soon, with Joby's CEO praising the FAA for delivering the new regulations ahead of schedule.FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said “This historic rule will pave the way for accommodating wide-scale Advanced Air Mobility operations in the future,”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Karl Brauer says he worries about consumer sentiment towards buying new vehicles, and that their E.V. segment is still losing money. He thinks cheap Chinese E.V. imports could cause U.S. conversion to struggle. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Shoot us a Text.Monday morning and we're rolling heavy into this week as we explore how Hurricane Helene impacts auto dealerships' insurance, the  launch of IONNA's EV fast-charging network, and why October is now a major sales season for retailers like Amazon and Walmart.Show Notes with links:As natural disasters like Hurricane Helene become more frequent and severe, and with Hurricane Milton facing down Florida's gulf coast, insurance companies are reassessing their risk models. Auto dealerships, in particular, face unique challenges in protecting high-value inventory and managing insurance costs in the aftermath of such storms.Andrew Hoffman, a professor at the University of Michigan, says these decisions will likely reflect trends, not just isolated incidents like Helene. He noted that auto dealerships may need to implement additional storm-proofing measures to secure insurance coverage.Meanwhile, some auto dealers are banding together to help those affected. The Jim Ellis Automotive Group in Georgia launched a relief campaign, collecting essential supplies like toiletries, canned goods, and baby formula for Helene-impacted residents in North Carolina. The group, in partnership with a vendor, filled a 36-foot trailer with supplies for affected areas and plans to make additional supply runs as recovery efforts continue.IONNA is taking EV charging to the next level with the opening of its first "Rechargery" in Apex, NC, offering ultra-fast chargers and customer-friendly amenities.IONNA is backed by eight major automakers, including BMW, General Motors (GM), Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota and its first Rechargery will feature 10 fast chargers capable of up to 400kW, serving both CCS and NACS users. The Apex site, once an old gas station, symbolizes the transition from fossil fuel to electric energy infrastructure.Amenities include a lounge with WiFi, food, coffee, and outdoor, pet-friendly spaces for drivers to relax while charging.IONNA plans to build 30,000 fast EV chargers across the U.S. by 2030.Amazon's October Prime Big Deal Days introduces unexpected holiday sales items, such as chainsaws, as the company seeks to expand holiday shopping earlier. Other retailers, like Walmart and Lowe's, are joining in with October deals, offering steep discounts across various categories. The event is seen as a strategic move to encourage Prime members to spend more and clear out less popular July Prime Day items like camping gear, yard tools, and chainsaws.A survey by Optimove Insights found that 67% of shoppers expect to feel overwhelmed by holiday marketing messages by November 1, especially with so many sales happening at once.“There is a risk of holiday marketing fatigue,” said Sky Canaves, retail analyst at Emarketer.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

General Motors (GM) just released their results for the third quarter of 2024, and they tell a story of a remarkable turnaround in their EV business. But is this turnaround a sign of things to come? Have they got all those production issues in the rear-view mirror? Or will GM continue to struggle to eat into Tesla's dominance. After many years of promising to bring compelling EVs to market, for so long GM's EV volumes were driven almost entirely by the Bolt and latterly the Bolt EUV. Those were cars built on ageing technology and had to prop up GM whilst they developed their Ultium Cells partnership with LG. That project saw plenty of investment, but it stumbled and stalled as the production ramp-up was plagued by teething problems.  On today's podcast we'll:  Record-Breaking Sales Figures: Explore how GM achieved a 60% surge in electric vehicle sales, reaching a new record Market Share Gains: Understand GM's strategies and the growing consumer acceptance of its electric offerings. Diverse EV Portfolio: Remind you about GM's range of electric vehicles that cater to a variety of preferences, including standout models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Lyriq. Future Plans for Electrification: Talk about GM's ambitious plans for expanding its EV lineup, including upcoming models and investments that aim to capture a larger segment of the market. Challenges and Opportunities Ahead: And finally get some insight into the challenges GM faces in the competitive electric vehicle landscape, as well as the opportunities that could drive future growth.

Welcome back to the OVTLYR Trading Room! In today's session, we're tackling a mix of technical hiccups and market trends, keeping our focus sharp on some interesting stocks. We're analyzing Citibank (C), Etsy (ETSY), JPMorgan (JPM), and XLF today, so let's dive right into the juicy details. Today's star is Etsy (ETSY), catching our eye with a solid 6.93% positive signal—looks like there's potential for more downside action here. General Motors (GM) and Nike (NKE) also popped up on our radar with possible bearish trends, but they didn't quite meet our trade criteria. As always, our strategy is all about alignment—making sure short-term, intermediate, and long-term trends agree before we make a move. Across the sectors, it's mostly bearish vibes except for real estate and staples. It's all about keeping that discipline and patience, crucial for navigating these choppy markets. Highlights of Key Stocks: Citibank (C) had some movements but didn't hit our trading criteria. Etsy (ETSY) presented a clear downtrend, dropping 11% from July to now, signaling more potential for shorts. JPMorgan (JPM) and XLF are on our watch list, but today wasn't their day for action. General Motors (GM) showed signs of weakness, but it wasn't enough for a green light on shorts. Nike (NKE) stayed neutral today, so we held off on any trades. Space (SPCE) showed a strong downtrend with a recent sell signal, which could be something to watch closely. We're strict about our rules here—analyzing the 10, 20, and 50-period moving averages to make sure everything lines up perfectly before we dive into a trade. Today was a bit bumpy with a few tech issues on the platform, but that's just part of the game. The session was filled with patience, waiting for those perfect setups and ensuring all signals align. Although we had some tech glitches with OVTLYR today, we didn't let that throw us off. We stayed tuned to the market's pulse, patiently waiting for the right trading opportunities. Mahesh is on top of the platform updates, which should enhance its performance even more. This session is a great reminder for all traders about the importance of discipline and market awareness. Markets can be unpredictable, and staying patient can really pay off. Remember, not every day is full of action, and sometimes, watching and waiting is just as important as trading. For anyone keen on following structured, rule-based trading strategies, today's session was packed with insights. And hey, keep an eye out for updates from Mahesh—more live trading insights are on the way to make your trading experience even better. #StockMarket #TradingStrategy #DayTrading #ShortSelling #TechnicalAnalysis #Citibank #EtsyStock #JPMorgan #GeneralMotors #NikeStock #SPCE #XLF #BearishTrends #Investing #StockTrader #OVTLYR #SmartTrading #ProfitHacking

In today's video, we dive deep into live trading analysis, covering several key stocks including Citibank ($C), General Motors ($GM), Etsy ($ETSY), and Space ($SPCE). We also examine broader market trends and how to remain disciplined while waiting for the right trading opportunities. The session highlights several potential short trades and the importance of following strict trading rules. The main focus of the session was Etsy ($ETSY), which presented a perfect downtrend. With a decline of over 11% since July, Etsy has become an ideal candidate for short trading. The alignment of the 10-, 20-, and 50-period moving averages confirmed the bearish trend. Although technical difficulties in the OVTLYR platform delayed some filters, the manual analysis still revealed Etsy as a strong short opportunity. With a sell signal and performance summary showing a 6.93% gain, Etsy stood out as the best trade of the day. Citibank ($C) was another stock under review. We explored its price movement within an order block, where it recently closed outside of the block, a key signal in technical analysis. Although the opportunity to trade Citibank passed, this example highlighted the importance of understanding price behavior within order blocks. General Motors ($GM), on the other hand, showed signs of weakness but hasn't fully developed a downtrend. With a 5% drop today, it's on our watchlist, but without the necessary crossover of technical indicators, we held off on trading. Space ($SPCE) also provided a clear downtrend with a sell signal back on August 29th. Over the past week, Space has dropped 8%, confirming the bearish trend and presenting a solid short trade for those already positioned. The technical indicators were fully aligned, making it a strong example of a proper setup for shorting in a declining market. From a broader perspective, the market remains mostly bearish, with only real estate and consumer staples showing strength. We emphasized the importance of adhering to our trading rules and waiting for full confirmation before entering trades. This discipline is crucial to avoid unnecessary risk, especially in volatile conditions. Looking forward, we will continue to monitor Etsy to see if it holds below the 50-period moving average, which could present another short opportunity. General Motors and Space are also on our radar for potential trades as the week unfolds. Thank you for tuning in to today's analysis. Make sure to subscribe for more live trading sessions and insights.
