Un miembro del canal me dijo: “Tanto hablar de Saab y se os olvida Volvo” ¡Y tenía toda la razón! Si a una persona, aficionada o no, le pronuncias “Volvo”, piensan en Suecia, en seguridad y, probablemente, en un coche familiar cuadrado y robusto. Esta es la historia de una marca que convirtió la seguridad en su religión pero también fabricó coupés deportivos y que acabó teniendo los ojos rasgados… ¿se puede hablar de “final feliz”? La historia de muchas marcas comienza en un taller de coches, pero la de Volvo no. En Gotemburgo, Suecia, esta erradicada la empresa SKF era uno de los mayores fabricantes del mundo de rodamientos. Y dos de sus empleados, el economista Assar Gabrielsson y el ingeniero Gustaf Larson, compartían una pasión: los automóviles. La leyenda cuenta que sellaron su acuerdo en una cena en agosto de 1924, en el restaurante Sturehof de Estocolmo, comiendo cigalas. El 14 de abril de 1927, el primer Volvo salió de la fábrica. Era el ÖV 4, apodado "Jakob", un descapotable con un motor de 4 cilindros y 28 CV. Como en toda buena historia, el debut tuvo un problemilla. Hablar de Volvo es hablar de seguridad con propuestas concretos. Otras marcas en los años 40 y 50 se centraban en la potencia las prestaciones, pero Volvo ya pensaba en cómo sobrevivir a un accidente. En 1944, su modelo PV444 ya introdujo una jaula de seguridad y el parabrisas de vidrio laminado. En los 50, experimentaron con salpicaderos acolchados. Pero el momento que cambió todo el mundo del automóvil, llegó en 1959. Volvo contrató al ingeniero Nils Bohlin, que antes había diseñado asientos eyectables para aviones de combate en Saab. Sabía cómo mantener a un humano atado y a salvo. En menos de un año, Bohlin desarrolló y patentó el cinturón de seguridad de tres puntos de anclaje. Y aquí es donde Volvo hizo algo impensable. Tenían la patente de uno de los mayores inventos en la historia del automóvil. Podrían haber intentados cubrirse de oro, pero no, la liberaron. Dejaron que cualquier fabricante del mundo la usara, gratis. Entendieron que era un avance demasiado importante para la vida humana como para guardárselo. ¿Y las carreras? En los 80, Volvo cogió su sedán 240, con la aerodinámica de una nevera, le metió un turbo descomunal y lo apodó "El Ladrillo Volador". Ganó el Campeonato Europeo de Turismos en 1985, humillando a BMW y Jaguar. Pero la locura definitiva llegó en 1994, en el Campeonato Británico de Turismos. A finales del siglo XX, los fabricantes independientes como Volvo lo tenían difícil. Tras un intento de fusión fallido con Renault, Volvo acabó buscando un socio más grande. En 1999, Ford compró la división de coches de Volvo por 6.450 millones de dólares. Volvo pasó a formar parte del Premier Automotive Group de Ford, junto a Jaguar, Land Rover y Aston Martin… Desde donde nadie lo esperaba, llegó una oferta. Venía de China. De un fabricante relativamente desconocido llamado Geely. El pánico se apoderó de Suecia. ¿Una empresa china comprando el símbolo de la ingeniería sueca? Muchos vaticinaron el fin de Volvo, como ya había sucedido con Saab, pensando que robarían su tecnología y la calidad caería en picado. Pero el fundador de Geely, Li Shufu, era un admirador profundo de Volvo. En 2010, la venta se completó por 1.800 millones de dólares. Y Li Shufu cumplió su palabra. Geely hizo lo más inteligente que podía hacer: puso una cantidad ingente de dinero sobre la mesa y se apartó. Le dieron a Volvo la financiación y la independencia casi total para investigar y desarrollar. Liberaron al tigre. El resultado fue el renacimiento de Volvo. Con la inversión china, los ingenieros suecos desarrollaron desde cero dos nuevas plataformas modulares, SPA y CMA. Contrataron a un nuevo jefe de diseño, Thomas Ingenlath, que revolucionó la estética de la marca con señas de identidad como los faros en forma de "Martillo de Thor". El primer fruto de esta nueva era, el XC90 de 2015, fue una declaración de intenciones: lujoso, tecnológico, minimalista y, por supuesto, el coche más seguro del mundo. Fue un éxito rotundo y marcó el camino para una gama que ha devuelto a Volvo a lo más alto del segmento premium, reforzando su identidad sueca y apostando ahora por la electrificación total con su submarca Polestar.

Then Sami chimes in about his plug-in experience with the 2025.5 Volvo XC90. Loaded with 455 ponies and 30-ish miles of range, the XC90 is sure to be a hit. But then Sami's attention turns to the Swedish automakers attempts at designing an infotainment system, and things fall apart a bit. Volvo's current XC90 launched almost a decade ago and was a pivotal piece of the brand's U.S. offerings. Unsurprisingly, the large, three-row crossover performed well for Volvo over the last decade. Despite the brand's pivot into electric vehicles, Volvo has given the second-generation XC90 another facelift to keep it relevant to customers. This extensive overhaul swaps sheet metal and interior pieces to give the XC90's relatively old bones a new, albeit familiar, look. Powering the updated XC90 is the same array of hybrid powertrains, with the B5 and B6 models opting for the mild-hybrid-assisted 2.0-liter I4 that generates 247 hp and 295 hp, respectively. In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Duncan Forrester.Duncan is a globally experienced Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and consultant who's worked with many of the automotive industry's most famous brands. He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. With that unique experience, he started the first communication consultancy specifically supporting start-up and electric vehicle brands, initially creating the PR and Communications function for INEOS Automotive and their Grenadier, and then as Chief Communications Officer for Volta Trucks. And more recently in the same role for Automobili Pininfarina, with their all-electric Battista hypercar – one of the fastest and most powerful road cars ever built. And he's now working with the electrification of the vast Ultra Class mining haul trucks, so he really has worked on the decarbonisation of vehicles at every end of the automotive spectrum.In our conversation we talk about how he knew from an early age that he wanted to get into the automotive industry and he demonstrated great effort and persistence to make that happen.When opportunities arose, he had his own north star which helped him to decline some that weren't aligned.As a result he has amassed a significant amount of experience in the specialised field of launching startup EV brands.Paul Flitter and Paul Kirby had both mentioned Duncan in their recent episodes, highlighting what a supportive mentor he is. At 28 years old, Christine Thorn Fischer was a happy, healthy, elite-level steeplechasing, elementary school teacher. Then, she found a lump in her breast. Christine was diagnosed with stage four invasive ductal carcinoma — breast cancer — that spread to her spine and sacrum. Suddenly, instead of dreaming about her next race on the track, Christine was undergoing intense treatment including eight rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. In this conversation, Christine — who is married to professional marathoner Reed Fischer — talks about her diagnosis and the days, weeks, and months that followed. She talks about her experience with scalp cooling to preserve her hair during treatment, about the worst day of her life, and about what it was like learning that she might die within a few years. Volvos XC90 might be getting long in the tooth, with its current generation debuting almost a decade ago, but its plug-in hybrid Recharge variant leans into the current electrified discussion. This potent PHEV takes the reserved styling of the family-hauling XC90 and stuffs the Volvo plug-in hybrid powertrain under the skin. This system blends a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 with electric motors to send a combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. On the newer end of the spectrum, the smaller Genesis GV60 eschews the gasoline engine and relies solely on electric motors for motivation. This battery-electric crossover packs a 77.4 kWh battery to feed two motors in the Performance AWD trim. This all-wheel-drive performance trim sends 429 hp, or 483 hp in boost mode, to all four wheels. The downside to this power is that this BEV can only travel 235 miles per charge, per Genesis. However, when you evaluate the market there's winners and losersespecially as we transition to electric car sales. Volvo for example is running 26.6per cent behind or 1327 less sales year to date compared to the same time lastyear. Its four staple SUV's, the C40, XC40 plus the XC60 and XC90 have allsuffered significantly since transitioning towards hybrid and electric power andgaining price increases. A plugin hybrid with 455 HP and 36 miles of all electric range, there's a lot to like about this vehicle, but Sami says the third row accessibility isn't ideal, which begs the question, why are people buying three row vehicles if they can't climb in the back? With more than 600 horsepower on tap, piloting the 2023 Lucid Air Touring is more like flying an airplane than driving a sedan. But a highly competent performance sedan is exactly what the Lucid Air Touring is. Interestingly, it has other personalities as well. And we discovered many of them as we interviewed David Lickfold, Lucid's Director of Chassis and Vehicle Dynamics. Host Jack Nerad sat down with him at a recent driving event based in Santa Monica, California. In the extensive interview, he revealed what Lucid Motors set out to achieve in the Air Touring … and how they were able to do it. Their successes in realizing the vision are impressive, as we will detail in our discussion. The all-new 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport is the anchor of this week's road test segment. The new version of the TrailSport is designed and equipped to deliver more off-road prowess than ever before. That said, it will still be an on-road transport vehicle for most of its buyers, so Nerad and his wife put it to the test on a road trip from Southern California to Phoenix. One object of the journey was to test the new Pilot. The other was to attend a couple of Spring Training games before the Major League season started. Mission accomplished on both fronts. And we'll tell you more in this episode. At the other end of the country — battling snow and ice — Co-Host Chris Teague was testing the 2023 Volvo XC90. One interesting thing about the test — he and his family own a three-year-old XC90 as their family car of choice. He'll reveal how the SUV has changed and improved since he bought his. In the news, new-car prices keep going up, and now a global carmaker says the U.S. average price will top $50,000. We'll tell who that automaker is and have more details and our thoughts on this coming up. And Tesla Motors is being investigated again. This time seat belts are the culprit. We'll tell you which model is affected and what the problem is. Also newsworthy, the European Union is breathing new life into vehicles with internal combustion engines.
