Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, together known as SOFI TUKKER, defy every convention of electronic dance music. This conversation explores their unlikely origin story—from D1 basketball captain and aspiring diplomat to electronic music revolutionaries who've achieved stratospheric success by approaching their craft with athletic discipline and meditative mindfulness. Through an alchemy of Portuguese poetry and pulsing beats, they've amassed over 3 billion streams, scored multiple Grammy nominations, and landed high-profile Apple campaigns while sustaining well-being amidst non-stop touring. The Grammy-nominated electro-pop duo Sofi Tukker has been igniting dance floors around the world since their hit song “Best Friend” first blew up after being featured in an iPhone commercial. Now, they're back with a new album, “Bread” (an acronym for “Be Really Energetic and Dance”), which is a vibrant mix of electronic music and bossa nova. Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern join Tom Power over Zoom to talk about the record and how they developed their Brazilian-inspired sound.
How often do you discover new music on TikTok? Chances are, quite a lot. That's because TikTok is becoming a go-to app for finding and remixing music. Veneno is an example of this. It's a song from the 1980s by Ronaldo Silva, which was sampled by Mari Merenda and Sophia Ardessore on TikTok, and then remixed by pop duo Sofi Tukker in Florida. We speak to Sofi Tukker (Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern) about why they fell in love with this song, and why they chose to release it. We're also joined by the BBC's Maia Beth, music commentator Derrick Gee, and Nigerian rapper Reggie Rankin' who explain the pros and cons of the app.Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producers: Mora Morrison, William Lee Adams and Benita Barden Editors: Verity Wilde and Simon Peeks

On the show this time, it's the Bossa Nova electro pop of Sofi Tukker. Sofi Tukker is a duo - Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. They met at an event - he was DJing, she was singing Bossa Nova. Tucker asked if he could remix a song, and they've been working together ever since. While they were both attending Brown, Tucker did a DJ set opening for the electro-funk-disco duo The Knocks. They encouraged him and Sophie to move to New York to make music. Good move. Their very first EP 'Soft Animals' opens with the song “Drinkee” which was eventually nominated for a Grammy. Their latest album 'WET TENNIS' (which stands for “When Everyone Tries To Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe”) is available on Ultra Music. Recorded 01/05/2023. This week we warm up in the tubs with our new friend Sophie Hawley-Weld. One-half of energetic and colorful duo Sofi Tukker, she's a creative mind who interweaves culture, identity, and fun into her musical journey. On today's episode, we dive in deep about our connection to community, mental health and rituals on the road, and the development that happens behind the scenes within her music projects. She is thankful for growing up with a life full of opportunities where she could mix and mingle with an international community. The expectation at school was always to become a diplomat or leader, so the concept of artistry as a form of giving back to the world was an eye-opening realization.Initially pursuing academia at Brown University, Sophie was wavering in her passion after a big diversion: falling in love with Brazilian culture. She considered spurning it all, and moving to her heart home. It was in this love of Brazil, that she performed a Bossa Nova song at an event in providence where Tucker Halpern was also DJ'ing. It was there that the two began their musical and life collaboration. However, music was always in her blood. As a child, she developed an interest in the Brazilian Bossa Nova genre from her exposure to a very international community, in which she found herself naturally drawn to the harmonious sound of the friends who spoke the Portuguese language. This draw would shape her world in more ways than one, as she explores language through words, music, lyrics and collaboration. In an embrace of beginner's mind, Sophie isn't afraid to explore the silly and playful side of writing songs, leaning into sound versus lyrical meaning. Now, she aims to get back to Brazil as much as possible to keep her creativity alive.Using her stage performance as a form of expression, but also meditation, is a practice of presence for Sophie's life. She tells us how she finds stepping onto the stage to be a way of letting all of her problems go. When she takes that first step in front of their audience, it is a time to be experimental, get silly, and share her most vibrant self to the world. The energy they get back from the audience is an even greater joy.Loving the concept of what Sophie saw on Secular Sabbath from the internet, she was drawn to know more as her personality asks her always be curious, a trait that constantly guides her through wild experiences in her life. Realizing that this has been a key way to developing and opening up as an artist, she keeps this element of curiosity alive by saying yes to as many funky opportunities that present themselves. For her this is part of doing the work to stay fluid as an artist, keeping her work from being stagnant, and staying inspired to turn out new sounds under her project Sofi Tukker. So take a deep breathe with us as we settle into this inspiring conversation about managing creative passions and the balance of taking that to the professional level with Sophie Hawley-Weld.To join Secular Sabbath membership, you can find us at secular-sabbath.com/membership. The original set was created in one take and has since been tightened up with smoother transitions. It's also been shortened by 1minute. If you're fine with the original raw remix, there's no need to download the new version. As promised, Party Favorz has officially switched gears into summer mode with the release of our annual Catch-Up for 2022. This set features the biggest and I mean the BIGGEST Dance Club songs of the year right at the midpoint. As typical of past releases, songs released in the last quarter of the previous year are also included because they had so much staying power — they remained in heavy rotation on streaming and in the clubs well into 2022. To be honest, the club business still hasn't fully recovered to the point that it appears Billboard has officially done away with the chart, which started in the 1970s as the Disco Chart. Who's to say if it will ever be back but the one remaining chart they offer in dance music (Electronic Dance Music) isn't worth a grain of salt and frankly not even worth bothering with. For now, all decisions for songs included in this series are based on YouTube and Spotify streams and we're confident we got it right. The Catch-Up series also includes new releases that either will be or should be summer hits and are solely based on editorial decisions about what we think should be on your radar. While there are several of these songs included across these two volumes there are definitely some notable ones we think deserve your attention. First among these is a song released in the late fall of 2021 that apparently never came to our attention. Anabel Englund's 'Midnight Rapture' is an earworm delight that samples the Blondie #1 classic 'Rapture' from 1981. It's in keeping with many artists diving into their parent's record collections and pulling out delights from the decade and re-working the songs with fresh lyrics and a whole new vibe while keeping the original intact. Englund even creates a spoken-word interlude, which is more appropriate today than Debbie Harry's wonderbread rap on the original. Still, if you're not familiar with the song it's a pure delight. You should add it to your Spotify or Apple Music playlist. Sofi Tukker (a Party Favorz favorite) is back with a couple of earworms for your summer listening. 'Original Sin' follows their trademark sound complete with the 1960s bass riff Tucker Halpern injects to great effect into many of their biggest songs. The Crush Club remix takes into deeper house terriorty but injects a euphoric and uplifting riff into the song about halfway through and is repeated again towards the end. You can add it to your Spotify or Apple Music playlist. Our biggest pick here is 'Summer In New York' where Sofi Tukker lay down their cool kids indie vibe. Sofi even adds the familiar Suzanne Vega riff from her 1980s song 'Tom's Diner,' which was given the house treatment by DNA in the early 1990s. I'm fairly certain this is Soffi doing it herself and the song does not rely on this injection to make it the surefire summer anthem it is. Instead, it's almost kind of casually thrown in because it fits the whole vibe. If this song isn't on your Spotify or Apple Music playlist — it should be. You can thank me later. I also want to recognize 'Heat' by TT The Artist, Rony Rex & Psylla. I stumbled on this song by accident and was immediately hooked and haven't been able to get it out of my head since. This is a massive Bass House tune that will blow up any dancefloor and deserves a lot more attention than it's currently receiving. You can add it to your Spotify or Apple Music list here. Check these songs out below: Party Favorz also wants to give a HUGE shoutout to relative newcomer Ryan Leary who not only creates fantastic remixes of existing tunes as featured here in Marshmello & Khalid's 'Numb' and Swedish House Mafia's 'Heaven Takes You Home' giving the originals a much needed boost but he also appears to be p...

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of electronic-music duos whose histories, as you'll hear, are intimately intertwined: The Knocks and Sofi Tukker. The Knocks—consisting of James Patterson and Ben Ruttner—just released their third album, and it's once again dancefloor-ready and heavy on the collaborations with indie icons. It's called History, and it's their first since 2018's New York Narcotic, which featured the massive Foster the People collaboration “Ride or Die.” The guys used the extra time granted them by the pandemic to refocus and make History exactly what they wanted it, and it shows. The album includes guest spots from Cold War Kids, Cannons, and another jam with Foster the People. Check out “Slow Song,” which features Dragonette. Speaking of features and collaborations, The Knocks have worked with Sofi Tukker—the duo consisting of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern—a bunch over the years, and as you'll hear in this conversation, Sofi Tukker might not even be a chart-topping outfit at all without the help and influence of James and Ben. Together they scored a bit hit with “Best Friend,” though if you only know one Sofi Tukker song it's probably the massive “Drinkee.” But the duo has a brand new record out with the provocative title Wet Tennis, and they're about to embark on a massive tour that includes two huge California shows with the Knocks as special guests. Check out “Kakee” from Wet Tennis. In this conversation, these four talk about their shared history in New York, right down to a specific building that the Beastie Boys used to own. They talk about the old days playing college shows and the new days playing the massive Greek Theatre. And you'll hear them graciously compliment each other on their latest songs. It's a regular lovefest. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sophie, Tucker, Ben, and James for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite social channels and podcasting platforms. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Sofi Tukker forms the back half of Tobin's excellent New Music Double Header this week. This American musical duo follows hard-to-beat tune Dennis from Liverpool's very own Pizzagirl. However, Sofi Tukker manage to pull a blinder and get straight to the back of the net with Purple Hat. Listen on for a truly epic listen. It's an official From the Bottom of The Record Box (Music Discovery Podcast) Recommendation. Tobin also brings us a Listener Recommendation from "that" Jamie as once again Jamie unleashes his vast musical knowledge on us. In much the same vein that Spike from the Bearded Pig Forge brought us Batzorig Vaanchig, Jamie also brings us Mongolian throat singing. It's the belligerent war-like swagger of Altan Urag. A future gaming top ten hit in the making we predict. Secondly, Richard is on all pre-release mission this week. He's got three tracks off of The Claim's new LP - The New Industrial Ballads. Two up at the top of the show, and the retro narrative classic 30 Years at the bottom of the show. Introducing Blind Owl Records Richard is also playing tracks off his current favourite spin The Ripening by Mike Pope. Mike is a stalwart of the San Diego music scene and has an album in the wings. Scheduled for release in early 2020, The Ripening is coming out of the Blind Owl Records stable. Formed in 2012 by Mrs Henry frontman and all-round rock 'n' roll nice guy Dan Cervantes, Blind Owl Records is a community driven label. Blind Owl also puts out film and literature as well as music. Not to be confused with Sophie Tucker - Last of the Red Hot Mamas - Sofi Tukker is an American musical duo. Based in New York the band consists of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. Perhaps best known for the song Best Friend (which Apple used during their unveiling of iPhone X) Sofi Tukker have delivered again here. Hawley-Weld, a native Canadian, schooled in Europe at the United Word College of the Adriatic whilst her counterpart is a Boxing Day baby from Massachusetts. They first met at an art gallery where Sophie was performing. Tucker approached her and a song writing partnership ensued. Sofi Tukker released their first EP only 3 years ago, its title drawing on inspiration from the poet Mary Oliver. "You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves" gives Sofi Tukker the EP title Soft Animals. Their single release from that EP, Drinkee is again poet inspired. The Brazilian poet Chacal is indeed the source of this and was nominated for a 2017 Grammy for Best Dance Recording. It seems that poets and Apple are recurrent themes in Sofi Tukker's timeline. The clean version of their track Batshit (entitled That's It [I'm Crazy]) was used by Apple for their iPhone 8 TV advertising. Treehouse Treehouse is their only studio LP to date, released a little over a year ago, on April 13th 2018. Paste Magazine described the LP as "an insatiable dance collection of jungle-pop songs with many well-executed nods towards Brazilian instruments, poets and to the national language, Portuguese". The songs on Sofi Tukker's Treehouse are alternately playful and sincere, intimate and global. Though Sofi Tukker's mélange of disparate sounds and influences - bossa-nova rhythms, cowbells, castanets, and spaghetti-western guitars - lends Treehouse an air of worldly sophistication, Hawley-Weld and Halpern never take themselves or their music too seriously. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Slant Magazine
When we think of musicians on tour we think of late nights, junk food, and a whole lot of partying—in other words, we don’t think wellness. While this may be true for many, SOFI TUKKER, a Grammy-nominated musical duo featuring Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, take their wellness practices on the road with them. Sophie & Tucker joined me on the mbgpodcast shortly after releasing their new single Fantasy to talk to us about what brought them together, bringing positivity to the stage, and how they spark creativity. Sophie and Tucker attended Brown University, where they met, and as Sophie told me, “the lack of wellness [in college] is really what brought us together, and we bonded over it.” Tucker had been an all-star basketball player at Brown, then had a severe illness that caused him to be bedridden for seven months, which was what ultimately led him to pursue music. As for Sophie, she explains, “I kind of beat up my body emotionally, physically, and mentally.” It wasn’t until someone close to her was diagnosed with bipolar disorder that she realized the fragility of life and how daily choices can impact our mental health. As they set out on their collaborative journey, they related to each other’s need for greater self-care. And while they credit wellness with some of their success, they both said it comes down to a unique approach to the creative process. They explained that they see two avenues to creativity: one is to wait for inspiration to come and then get down to work and the other is to continue working through the lulls and be ready for when the creativity comes. They both have a strong work ethic, staying late in the studio and creating on tour so that when the spark comes they’re already there and ready to make it happen. In this episode we talk about:The four unexpected wellness practices they do to prep before a concertTheir favorite ways to restore energy after big showsWhat’s in the smoothie bowl they make every morningSophie and Tucker are candid about the fact that wellness is a complicated journey. For them, music is about connecting with others from a present place and sharing positive energy and they acknowledge that this isn’t possible unless they care for themselves first. When asked what the future holds, Sophie said, “I would love to be in a place where it’s clear the world that we’re creating our music, and what we’re doing stands for something much larger than Sophie and Tucker.” Their words will inspire you to take action towards your dreams, put your health first, and be unapologetically you along the way.
