A Merry All Hallow's Eve to Ye All! There will be a regular episode this Friday, but I can't resist the opportunity to release an episode on the day of Halloween. Mynaa and I discuss a Persian novel concerning Nietzschean existential horror! Sadegh Hedayat grew up in the Iran of the Shah, and was influenced by western writers such as Kafka & Hesse. The urban legends surrounding this text in Iran were oft-repeated from parents to children: "Don't read this book; those who read it commit suicide." The Blind Owl is the story of an unnamed narrator who is haunted by an elusive, metaphysical scene that he witnesses by happenstance. The narrative is unreliable, and the recursive loops of his madness are woven into the repetitive phrases and descriptions; the characters are all copies of one another; the events of the novel are, in effect, the same narrative repeated ad nauseum. Central to the plot is the long illness and drug abuse of the narrator, and an endless downward spiral of insanity. Hedayat's writing often reflects existential horror, and could be compared to H.P. Lovecraft. Mynaa even suggested that certain passages resemble those in Ecce Homo. We do a review with minimal spoilers for the first fifteen minutes or so, then what follows is a very spoilery review where we analyze, speculate, and ramble about the imagery of this mysterious novel.
If a dark and twisty stream of consciousness narrative in translation sounds like an intriguing read, Blind Owl by Sadeq Hedayat is perfect for you. Penned by the forefather of the Modernist movement in Iranian literature, this surrealist story blends Western influences, Iranian folklore, and psychology. In today's episode, we discuss key themes and questions raised by Hedayat's text (so. many. questions). Today's pairings include a contemporary Iranian work in translation, a Persian fairy tale retelling, and a polarizing love-it-or-hate-it novel that is perfect for group discussions. If you love our extra nerdy discussion on the podcast today, we have a hunch that you would also love our Novel Pairings Patreon community. What is the difference between literary historical fiction and “woman with her back turned on the cover” historical fiction? In today's episode of Modern Readers, we're discussing the literary landscape and rise in popularity of the historical fiction genre. We explore the definition of historical fiction, significant time periods, craft vs. plot, and “literariness” to understand whether a historical book is literary or a really entertaining read—or both! Plus, we share Novel Pairings episodes and book recommendations to pair with our nuanced conversation. Her voice was sweet and liquid, like a streamThat lulls all other streams to sleep and dream; Her eyes like doe's eyes, whose dark gaze would makeA lion lie down dazed, and half awake. She seemed an alphabet of loveliness,Curved letters were the curling of each tress,Straight letters were her stature, and her lipsWere like a letter formed as an ellipse,And all the letters made her like that bowlThat shows the world as an enchanted whole. The story of Layli and Manjun — sometimes written as Layla and Majnun — was most famously recorded in a book-length poem by the twelfth-century Persian poet Nezami Ganjavi.

In classical narrative poetry, there's these formulaic repetitions that come up, right? And then we have these very weird formulaic repetitions that come up in Blind Owl. And I think the function is completely the opposite in the classical works and in this modern work. [In classical poetic narratives, repetitions] keep the reader kind of grounded. It's that same familiar signpost that keeps you on the right track. When we get to Blind Owl, when we get these very odd repetitions … it unhinges the reader, right? It makes you feel like you're in some weird dream and you can't get up.Sassan Tabatabai is a poet, translator, and scholar of Medieval Persian literature. He is Master Lecturer in World Languages and Literatures and the Core Curriculum, and Coordinator of the Persian Language Program at Boston University. His translations of Persian poetry have appeared in numerous journals, and he is the author of Father of Persian Verse: Rudaki and His Poetry, Sufi Haiku, and Uzunburun: Poems. He is also the translator of the novel Blind Owl by Sadeq Hedayat, published by Penguin Classics. His forthcoming books, both scheduled for release in spring 2023 are Ferry to Malta: Poems and Translations, and a Persian translation of the poetry of David Ferry. He joins Suzanne and Chris to talk about the challenges in translating prose and poetry, and to further explore the influences and the intricacies of Sadeq Hedayat's novel Blind Owl.SHOW NOTES.Sassan Tabatabai on Twitter.Sassan Tabatabai's books and translations: Blind Owl. I had thought about death and the decomposition of all the particles in my body many times—to the extent that it didn't frighten me—in fact, my true wish was to be completely annihilated. The only thing that frightened me was that the atoms in my body would mix with the atoms in the bodies of the vulgar. This was an insufferable thought. Sometimes I wished that after death I would have long arms and extended fingers with which I could gather all my own atoms and hold them with both hands so that the atoms that belong to me would not enter the bodies of the vulgar.Sadeq Hedayat's novel Blind Owl is brief, curious, and often disquieting. It tells the tale of a man who paints pen-case covers, who paints the same image again and again—and old man sitting beneath a cypress tree, an alluring young woman offering him a water lily, a stream running between them. And he is haunted by this image, and especially by the woman in this image—who may also be his wife, his cousin, his mother? The setting of the novel keeps shifting, the props in the novel keep reappearing, and the characters all seem like hazy echoes of the two figures in the painting. Chris and Suzanne try to stay grounded as they discuss this marvellous gem of Iranian modernism.Content warning: The book contains some potentially disturbing imagery, and so does our discussion.Thank you to Michael Collins for helping us edit this episode.SHOW NOTES.Next: Sadeq Hedayat: Blind Owl.

Noah C Lekas steamrolls the sky this week as we spin his latest vinyl release live in the studio. It's another cracker from Blind Owl Records. You can grab your copy right here. This fantastic new production draws on Noah C Lekas' book Saturday Night Sage. Noah reads excerpts from the book to some wicked music provided by other acts from the Blind Owl stable. On this record you'll get to hear music from Howlin' Rain and Mrs Henry amongst others. It's a brilliant collaboration and of course comes fully recommended from Record Box.

This week on the show, we're joined by poet and music journalist Noah C. Lekas and Ethan Miller of Howlin' Rain and Comets on Fire. They've got a new collaboration featured on Sounds From the Shadow Factory, a 10" record from Blind Owl: a rock & roll adaptation of "Saturday Night Sage," the poem from Lekas' recent book of the same name. The two joined us for a discussion about spoken word, their paths in psychedelia, blue collar mysticism, and the current state of the counterculture. Heading deep underground, this week on Transmissions.

Episode 109 features Dan Cervantes of the San Diego band, Mrs. Henry.Mrs. Henry and Dan just wrapped up a jam-packed 2019. Last August, the band released Mrs. Henry Presents The Last Waltz, a three-LP recording of their performance of The Last Waltz at The Belly Up in November of 2017. The performance features some of San Diego’s most notable musicians, (members of The Schizophonics, Sacri Monti and Louise XIV), and took months of both planning and preparation. The band also documented the entire event through a documentary showing the preparation involved and the entire concert. Tune in to hear all about the events leading up to the concert, their decision to record and document it, and the delicate balance between mimicking the original event and putting Mrs. Henry’s own spin on it.Mrs. Henry is also about to release Live At The Cashbah, a recording of their performance at the legendary San Diego venue on the night of its 30th anniversary. Dan also just released a brand new solo single called “Keep On Walking,” under his solo moniker, Dude Cervantes. The episode kicks off with “Keep On Walking” and features tunes from both The Last Waltz , Live At The Cashbah, and Mrs. Henry’s 2019 single “The River.”You can purchase all of these recordings and more via Dan’s label, Blind Owl.
This week on the Setlist Podcast we talk to Daniel "Dude" Cervantes. Daniel is the Founder and Operator of Blind Owl; a San Diego based Record Label. He is also a member of bands Mrs. Henry & Howlin' Rain. To learn more about Blind Owl and Daniel, head to www.Blindowlsd.com
It's all about Zooluxx this week. Psychedelic gunslingers straight from the Los Angeles Music scene and recording on the Blind Owl Records label. Zooluxx really do take us to Different Planets. This week Richard is In Conversation with founder of the label and frontman of Mrs Henry, Dan Cervantes. We discuss the label in general and some of its roster, including Zooluxx and Mike Pope among others. Dan Cervantes is down to earth and enthusiastic. Richard and Dan also touch on Mrs Henry's rendition of The Last Waltz and the documentary it spawned. Tobin is bookending the show this week with oddly named The Japanese House. Rarely to be outwitted, Richard delves into the research books and unearths the story behind the name. But what does Richard really think about The Japanese House? Listen on to find out more. Also in Tobin's sights this week is another of his favourite "guess where this band is from" spins. Nérija do sound cool and very sexy indeed, can Richard rise to the challenge? Tobin tops it all off with Maye and her New Music release Tú. Originally broadcast on our Patreon channel 3 weeks ago, Maye finally makes it onto the show. Blodwyn Pig tease us with a comedic intro. Finally, Richard introduces the Family Playlist and dives right in with the classic Russian Circles track, Ethel. Good old auntie Ethel. Track Listing Face Like Thunder The Japanese House Different Planets Zooluxx Riverfest Nérija The Change Song Blodwyn Pig Ethel Russian Circles Tú Maye Saw You In A Dream The Japanese House Zooluxx - two EP's coming January 2020 We call our music jazzadelic space groove, it's heavy funk. Zooluxx frontman Troy Vincent He's talking about Zooluxx, the psychedelic, genre-crossing band he shares with bassist Ned Casual, drummer Princess Frank, and percussionist Bertie Paradise. Formed in Los Angeles from the ashes of a locally-beloved blues outfit, Zooluxx makes raw, rhythmic music that nods to the band's influences — including 1960s rock & roll, electric blues, Parliament Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, and Afrobeat — while still sounding fresh and feral. It's spontaneous dance music rooted in grooves and guitars, both modern in its explosively eclectic approach and proudly old-school in its reverence for analog sound. Appropriately, the guys sharpened the edges of their acclaimed live show with a weekly residency at Good Times at Davey Wayne's, a 1970s-themed bar in the middle of chic Hollywood. The place was an oddly fitting home for Zooluxx, whose songs mixed vintage cool with contemporary kick. Every Monday night for five years, Troy and Ned would hit the stage, piecing together their band's unique sonic stomp — as well as their ideal lineup — while members of the Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Paul McCartney and U2 circulated throughout the audience. It was a proper scene, with Zooluxx's co-founders serving as the ringleaders. New releases for 2020 Ghetto Starship was released in June 2019, introducing Zooluxx's sound to those who had yet to catch the band in concert. Recorded to analog tape on Lynyrd Skynyrd's old API console in San Diego, the EP found the guys working with Karl Denson, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who currently tours as a member of the Rolling Stones. Arriving less than a year later, the follow-up EP Just a Little Bit shines a light on the spontaneity of a Zooluxx gig, even kicking off with an improvisational jam called Golden Gun Blues. With its mix of raw energy, sharp songcraft, and uplifting lyrics, Just a Little Bit will be released next year by Blind Owl both digitally and on vinyl on January 31st, with Ghetto Starship as the B-Side on the vinyl release. Sofi Tukker forms the back half of Tobin's excellent New Music Double Header this week. This American musical duo follows hard-to-beat tune Dennis from Liverpool's very own Pizzagirl. However, Sofi Tukker manage to pull a blinder and get straight to the back of the net with Purple Hat. Listen on for a truly epic listen. It's an official From the Bottom of The Record Box (Music Discovery Podcast) Recommendation. Tobin also brings us a Listener Recommendation from "that" Jamie as once again Jamie unleashes his vast musical knowledge on us. In much the same vein that Spike from the Bearded Pig Forge brought us Batzorig Vaanchig, Jamie also brings us Mongolian throat singing. It's the belligerent war-like swagger of Altan Urag. A future gaming top ten hit in the making we predict. Secondly, Richard is on all pre-release mission this week. He's got three tracks off of The Claim's new LP - The New Industrial Ballads. Two up at the top of the show, and the retro narrative classic 30 Years at the bottom of the show. Introducing Blind Owl Records Richard is also playing tracks off his current favourite spin The Ripening by Mike Pope. Mike is a stalwart of the San Diego music scene and has an album in the wings. Scheduled for release in early 2020, The Ripening is coming out of the Blind Owl Records stable. Formed in 2012 by Mrs Henry frontman and all-round rock 'n' roll nice guy Dan Cervantes, Blind Owl Records is a community driven label. Blind Owl also puts out film and literature as well as music. Mrs Henry are undoubtedly best known for their rockumentary on their performance of the whole The Last Waltz gig by The Band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPXTKhGuR2I Track Listing Johnny Kidd's Right Hand Man/Under Canvas The Claim Every Loving Herd Does As It Should Mike Pope Dennis Pizzagirl Purple Hat Sofi Tukker Mother Mongolia Altan Urag 30 Years The Claim Homonculus/Ain't It Strange Mike Pope Sofi Tukker at One Colorado Old Pasadena - Photo © Justin Higuchi Sofi Tukker at One Colorado Old Pasadena - Photo © Justin Higuchi What do we know about Sofi Tukker? Not to be confused with Sophie Tucker - Last of the Red Hot Mamas - Sofi Tukker is an American musical duo. Based in New York the band consists of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. Perhaps best known for the song Best Friend (which Apple used during their unveiling of iPhone X) Sofi Tukker have delivered again here. Hawley-Weld, a native Canadian, schooled in Europe at the United Word College of the Adriatic whilst her counterpart is a Boxing Day baby from Massachusetts. They first met at an art gallery where Sophie was performing. Tucker approached her and a song writing partnership ensued. Sofi Tukker released their first EP only 3 years ago, its title drawing on inspiration from the poet Mary Oliver. "You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves" gives Sofi Tukker the EP title Soft Animals. Their single release from that EP, Drinkee is again poet inspired. The Brazilian poet Chacal is indeed the source of this and was nominated for a 2017 Grammy for Best Dance Recording. It seems that poets and Apple are recurrent themes in Sofi Tukker's timeline. The clean version of their track Batshit (entitled That's It [I'm Crazy]) was used by Apple for their iPhone 8 TV advertising. Treehouse Treehouse is their only studio LP to date, released a little over a year ago, on April 13th 2018. Paste Magazine described the LP as "an insatiable dance collection of jungle-pop songs with many well-executed nods towards Brazilian instruments, poets and to the national language, Portuguese". The songs on Sofi Tukker's Treehouse are alternately playful and sincere, intimate and global. Though Sofi Tukker's mélange of disparate sounds and influences - bossa-nova rhythms, cowbells, castanets, and spaghetti-western guitars - lends Treehouse an air of worldly sophistication, Hawley-Weld and Halpern never take themselves or their music too seriously. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. Slant Magazine
Ian McNabb in conversation talking about a life in music, The Icicle Works & much much more. The Icicle Works are an English were named after the 1960 short story "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" by science fiction author Frederik Pohl. They had a top 20 UK hit with "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" (1983). In the US and Canada, they had only one top 40 hit, the 1984 single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)". Led by singer/songwriter Ian McNabb, the band released five albums from 1984 to 1990 before breaking up in 1991. McNabb later convened a revised line-up of the band in 2006 to play live shows; this revised Icicle Works line-up still plays sporadic live dates. The band was founded in Liverpool in 1980 when bassist Chris Layhe (who had been in a couple of local rock bands including Elanor and Blind Owl) answered an advertisement for a musical collaborator placed by 20-year-old Ian McNabb. The two got together and started writing. They quickly added drummer Chris Sharrock (who had previously drummed for the Cherry Boys), and began playing live shows as "The Icicle Works". In 1981, the band recorded a six-song independently released cassette entitled Ascending. In 1982, they released the independent single "Nirvana", which made it to No. 15 on the UK's indie charts. The following year, the Icicle Works were signed to the Beggars Banquet label, who issued the single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)" on their subsidiary label Situation Two. Later that year, The Icicle Works released their biggest UK hit, 1983's "Love is a Wonderful Colour", which was a Top 15 single. Their 1984 eponymous debut album followed shortly thereafter, reached number 24 on the UK charts and entered the US top 40. Appearing on the US top 40 singles charts at around the same time (and hitting the Canadian top twenty) was "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)", a retitled and slightly remixed version of the band's Situation Two release of 1983.
In this episode, Christine interviews Jason Meyers and Rory Morison of Bad Vibes, an alt-country/blues/psychedelic swap rock band based in San Diego. As artists on the Blind Owl label, these guys are gaining a lot of momentum in the local scene. In the interview, they talk about the history of the band, their upcoming album (which they actually recorded analog onto tape), touring antics, trying to make it as a band, and much more. Plus, you’ll have a chance to listen to a couple of tracks off of their first album, No One’s Safe. … Continue reading →
MICHAEL BREWER & TOM SHIPLEY began their careers as solo folk artists on the coffee house circuit in the early 1960s. Both native mid-westerns (Oklahoman and Ohioan respective to their billing), they first met in 1964 at the Blind Owl coffee house in Kent, Ohio. It would be three more years before they would team up, and during those three years the two crossed paths at clubs on the folk circuit, and each tried their hand in other musical collaborations that didn't pan out. DOWN IN L.A. In 1965 Michael Brewer migrated to Los Angeles following the emerging west coast music scene. His initial duo Mastin & Brewer signed a record deal with Columbia Records but after the group imploded before finishing their record, Brewer eventually accepted a job as a staff songwriter at Good Sam Music, a publishing offshoot of the newly formed A&M Records. Around this time, Tom Shipley arrived in L.A. and looked up his acquaintance from the folk circuit. Tom rented a house around the corner from Michael's house, and soon they began writing songs together. When Shipley was subsequently hired as staff writer for A&M in 1967, their partnership began as a songwriting collaboration.

In this masterpiece of Iranian literature by Sadegh Hedayat, the nameless narrator is slowly falling into madness. The images he sees are troublesome to say the least. Is he dreaming? Is he losing touch with reality? Are we dealing with the hallucinations of an opium user? The text does not provide any answer and the reader is left to decide on his/her own how to interpret the maniacal laughter and the various shadows that keep disturbing the narrator's peace. And death, ever so present. A fascinating read but not recommended for a fun novel to bring on the beach. It will make your mind wonder if you are all sane yourself and if the murderous tendencies the narrator exhibits may not be yours just as well. “The Blind Owl” has been compared to Poe's stories, to “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and to some of Dostoevsky's novels. Written from the first person narrative for a more “hands-on” experience, “The Blind Owl,” short yet dense, will shake you to the core. Prepare to be moved!
