Niko and Jeremiah are back together for another installment of “What we learned this week” and they're mostly focused on how the Sounders will cope with Jordan Morris likely being out at least six weeks. There's no sugar-coating that the injury diagnosis was bad, but there is reason to think that it won't be a season-killer. First and foremost, both of them like the way Danny Musovski has been playing and how he projects going forward. They also like what they're hearing about Osaze De Rosario, the Tacoma Defiance striker who is off to a blazing start this year.Of course, they also find time to give Stefan Frei his flowers for hitting 400 appearances with the Sounders and give a scouting report on Saturday's opponent, St. Louis City.Sponsor

It's Episode 338. Somewhat surprisingly and certainly prematurely, this will be the last episode that contains an LAFC game recap in 2024, as the Black and Gold fall to the Rave Green, 2-1, at BMO in the Western Conference Semifinals. It was a heartbreaking loss, especially because LAFC had played well enough to win and created enough chances to score. The soccer gods, however, are a fickle bunch, and, in this year's playoffs, aging goalkeepers seem to have curried their favor. Stefan Frei stood on his head, making three incredible saves on would-be sure goals, Maxime Chanot found the back of our net, and Jordan Morris found one late to eliminate LAFC. Yes, questions abound. And yes, we ask many of them here on 338. However, this isn't a full post-mortem, as that will come later in the offseason. This episode truly was a venting session, a stage in the grieving process. You want Dolo out? Pissed at JT and the FO? Do you feel the same way Scarf does about Olivier Giroud? All of that was fair game on this one, as this can be your safe space, too. Like we said, we will attempt to ask and answer many of the larger questions at a later date this year. Also on this episode, Filly talks like a parrot, Scarf answers the door, and we search for Carlos Vela. This isn't goodbye for 2024 yet, but it's at least goodbye for Episode 338!

Tonight on Sounders Weekly, Jackson Felts looks back at the draw against San Jose, ahead towards the Houston game Saturday, and so much more, including visits from right back Alex Roldan, Ari Liljenwall of MLS soccer, and goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Seattle Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about the team's 2-0 win over Kansas City last weekend, Stefan Frei's 113 shutouts, where Pedro de la Vega is at, health updates, and facing San Jose tomorrow.
Here on Episode 320, LAFC heads up to Seattle to do exactly what we did three-plus weeks ago, beat the Sounders, 3-0. This time, a berth in the semis of the 2024 Leagues Cup is on the line. LAFC would start out hot, as Ryan Hollingshead got behind the defense and slotted home a 13' goal to get the Black and Gold rolling. A dozen minutes later, Kei Kamara turned back the hands of time yet again, this time with a beautiful right-footed, leaping volley that sent the bouncing shot over the outstretched arms of Stefan Frei and into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.Just 8 minutes after the halftime whistle, Denis Bouanga, who had missed a similar opportunity earlier in the match, got the long pass from his good buddy Hugo Lloris, and the lead was three. Hugo went nearly 14 years between career assists one and two, but barely 14 days between two and three! Also on this episode, Lewis O'Brien makes his debut, FC Cincinnati may be to blame for Kike Olivera not playing, and Filly is still in Europe. Enjoy Episode 320!

I'll admit, I was not quite ready for the 2023 season to end. A season that had once been virtually left for dead had come roaring back to life over the last couple months and I had sorta talked myself into the belief that this season was destined to end at MLS Cup. Maybe not actually lifting, but at least making a valiant charge, maybe even with Nicolas Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidiaz putting in a couple notable performances along the way. Nothing I saw against LAFC totally dissuaded me from believing that outcome was at least plausible, but the 1-0 loss at least means it's no longer possible. If I'm to pull back a little, I suppose the final game was rather predictable. The Sounders played reasonably well -- I think you can even say they outplayed LAFC -- but couldn't convert their chances, while LAFC made the most of theirs. Maxime Crepeau is a big reason why the sounders couldn't convert, but the decisive factor ending up being the most predictable thing ever: Denis Buounga racing down the left wing and firing an absolute laser past Stefan Frei. The Sounders are one win away from advancing to the Conference Semifinal after earning a hard-fought 2-nil victory vs FC Dallas this past Monday. Side x Side co-hosts Steve Zakuani and Brad Evans breakdown the win, and laud individual performances from Stefan Frei (15th clean sheet on the season) and shutdown defending by Nouhou. Then, it's time to look ahead to Saturday, when the Sounders can advance with a win at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, TX. Tune in on the Sounders app + iHeart radio to hear Danny Jackson and Brad Evans on the call, 1360 El Rey for Spanish radio, and Apple TV -- MLS Season Pass to view the match.
The Sounders ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games and took a 1-0 series lead over FC Dallas in the first round playoff series. They got goals from Albert Runsak and Jordan Morris, a 12th career playoff shutout from Stefan Frei and generally looked about as good as they've looked all year. I still don't quite know how to feel about this three-game series, but I know winning your first game is a lot better than losing it! Orlando City completed a three-games-in-eight-days gauntlet, finishing with a transcontinental trip to play the Seattle Sounders. Although the Lions played well in the match and created chances, they were ultimately undone by a lack of finishing once again as Mauricio Pereyra's empty-net sitter sailed over the crossbar from about eight yards out and Stefan Frei made some good saves to deny Duncan McGuire and Facundo Torres. Pedro Gallese had little to do at the other end but stopped the few chances that the hosts put on frame. It was a good, yet simultaneously frustrating, result. We give our thoughts on the game, touch on Mikey Halliday's apparent hamstring injury, and make our selections for Man of the Match. We obviously checked our mailbagbox to see what's on your mind. Remember, if there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We briefly touched on OCB's busy schedule in the coming week before diving into a discussion about The Beautiful Game, a legends match at Exploria Stadium on Friday night that was cut short due to weather and misbehaving fans who refused to stay off the field of play. What can MLS and security teams around the country learn from this game for when Lionel Messi arrives? We discuss both the entertaining aspect of the game, Nani's return to Orlando, and why people think it's OK to disrupt sporting events and ruin it for everyone else. Here's how No. 356 went down: 0:15 – Orlando City did everything right except score a goal in Seattle. The Lions still haven't beaten the Sounders at Lumen Field, but they have taken four out of six points in the last two meetings overall. 18:18 – Mailbagbox time and a quick peek at the upcoming OCB schedule. 33:49 – The Beautiful Game lived up to its name until it didn't. Back at BMO, a weary but dangerous LAFC squad looks for their second win in a row as the Seattle Sounders make their way down the coast. It's Episode 260, and on this one, you better be in your seats early!Just 54 seconds into the match, Mateusz Bogusz sneaks one past Stefan Frei from distance, and, surprisingly, that would be all LAFC would need in this midweek match with Seattle. LAFC, up 1-0 early, would make it stick, behind a couple of saves from John, a masterclass from Giorgio and the rest of the back line, and the best overall effort we have seen from Danny Crisostomo. LAFC take three points and the spot at the top of the Western Conference. Also on this episode, Filly is tired, Scarf rants on Twitter bums, and our good buddy Jonathan Reimer joins us on the fourth floor! Don't worry, we'll do this again in just about 72 hours, but for now, enjoy Episode 260!

It was hard to tell who was more tired, LAFC after playing their 5th match in 15 days, or the Defenders, fresh from celebrating Scarf's 40th birthday. But the show must go on, both for our beloved Black and Gold, and for THE most LAFC podcast on Earth, Defenders of the Banc! Episode 237 relives the riveting 0-0 draw in Seattle, complete with yellow cards, substitutions, and one nice save from Stefan Frei. We looked tired, but keeping a high-powered Seattle squad off the scoresheet is no small feat. The defense looked great, and the offense was almost good enough to steal all 3 at Lumen. Also on this episode, Filly apologies to an entire city while Scarf gets some birthday love from Giorgio Chiellini! A huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of Scarf's 40th. It really does feel like millions!

LAFC rolls back into Banc of California Stadium for the first time in three weeks, and waiting for them at the gates are the reigning CONCACAF champs, the Seattle Sounders. It's Episode 205, where Filly and Scarf break down all the fun that was LAFC's 4th straight win. With kickoff set for 8:15, the stars were aligned for some serious “MLS After Dark” action. The game's ominous start definitely qualified, as just 15 minutes in, Cristian Roldan plays through three LAFC defenders before crossing a ball into the box and off the foot of Jesus David Murillo for just our second own goal of the season. Down 1-0, and narrowly escaping going down two, LAFC would answer. A lightning strike by Mahala knotted the match at one in the 35th minute. Just 8 minutes later, Jose Cifuentes would deliver a perfect ball to Carlos Vela, and in Ciman-like fashion, the ball trickled through Stefan Frei's legs to put the good guys up, 2-1. In the second half, Gareth Bale came on after about an hour, and that was just about all the excitement to write home about. LAFC takes down Seattle and solidifies their spot atop the Supporters Shield race. Also on this episode, Filly quotes Noah Webster while Scarf dreams of a Chiellini hug at center pitch. With two games in the next 7 days, including an exhibition against Club America at Sofi, it's going to be another fun week for the Black and Gold, and for the Defenders! See you for 206!
