In this episode, we sit down with the dynamic Elizabeth Rodriguez—actress, Broadway star, and proud Nuyorican—for a conversation about her journey through some of television and theatre’s most impactful roles. From her breakout as Aleida Diaz on Orange Is the New Black to her polarizing turn as Paz Valdez on Power, Elizabeth opens up about the love, hate, and everything in between that comes with playing complex characters. We also dive into her latest film Allswell in New York, a raw and heartfelt portrayal of sisterhood and struggle, co-starring fellow Latina powerhouses Daphne Rubin-Vega and Liza Colón-Zayas. Elizabeth shares how growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side as the daughter of Puerto Rican parents shaped her perspective—and her passion for telling real, rooted stories. Plus, we talk about the growing wave of Latino narratives on stage, including Broadway’s current productions of Buena Vista Social Club and Real Women Have Curves, and why representation isn't just important—it's urgent. This is an unfiltered, inspiring look at identity, resilience, and the magic that happens when Latinas rise together.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Chávez Ravine" can mean many things. Obviously, there is an area in Los Angeles by that name. But there is also a book, a short documentary, and a Ry Cooder album, in that order. Cooder's 12th solo effort wouldn't exist without the book or the documentary. Like the Buena Vista Social Club, it came about almost by accident. And again, it was an opportunity he knew how to seize. It became his own ode to a lost Shangri-La – a masterful street-corner opera. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. At the beginning of the new millennium, Cooder was once again deeply involved in world music. He released two back-to-back collaborative albums, this time with Indian flutist Ronu Majumdar and Cuban guitar wizard Manuel Galbán. As with his collaborations with V.M. Bhatt and Ali Farka Touré ten years earlier, he mostly took a back seat and helped them do their own thing. We also talk briefly about the Cuban follow-ups of the Buena Vista Social Club and some of Cooder's other session projects. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. The Buena Vista Social Club was by far Cooder's biggest commercial success. At the time, he probably thought it was business as usual – working with a bunch of interesting and skilled musicians from a different musical culture, as he'd done so many times before. But this time he hit the jackpot. The importance of the album and the subsequent documentary cannot be overstated. It is the most popular recording of Cuban music in history, and it opened up the island's culture to the West as never before. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes.

Come on now, you know we got geared up for this one. One of the heaviest hitters in the world music conversation, Buena Vista Social Club's self-titled debut is this week's focus on EarWax!Let's head to Cuba (by way of Mexico, if you're Ry Cooder), find some legendary Cuban musicians, get them in the studio and see what magic unfolds. After their initial idea broke down, this is how Nick Gold and Ry Cooder pivoted, and man did it work out. These are songs that have been around Cuba for decades, nearly intrinsic to the country. The folks on this album love this music, they love to perform, and the result is a record that flows effortlessly. Truly beautiful in its scope and execution, Buena Vista Social Club is a reminder that music is bigger than politics, and that a great song will find a home in any era. Thanks for listening! In many ways — because of migration patterns, industry and other socio-political factors — Cuban music is in the DNA of what became Latin popular music, and one place we can clearly hear that is son. This week, we talk about Cuban son - its sonic hallmarks, its history, and its influence on Latinx music today. Featuring music by Sexteto Habanero, La Sonora Matancera, Trio Matamoros, Beny Moré, Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, and Gloria Estefan. German filmmaker Wim Wenders is a cinematic legend who has given us many classic films, including "Paris, Texas," "Wings Of Desire," "Until the End of the World," "Buena Vista Social Club," "Pina," "The Salt of the Earth," this year's "Perfect Days" and now, his latest documentary "Anselm." Shot in stunning 3D, the look at German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer's works of art is striking in its form and execution by Wenders. The Academy Award-nominated director was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his latest film, which you can listen to below. The film will receive a limited release from Janus Films this weekend in New York and is up for your consideration for Best Documentary Feature Film. Please be sure to check out the film and take a listen below. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
