We're launching a new mini-series on the Licence to Queer podcast feed and one which is going to be led by Antony Lowbridge-Ellis, David's (better) half. In this introductory episode, Antony, a life-long fan of the medium of comic books (see his X-Men podcast X-Nation) gives a bit of background on this new Licence to Queer project where Antony and David will review each arc, in order, of the James Bond comic books being published by Dynamite Entertainment. Before we get to Episode 001 (Warren Ellis' and Jason Masters' 2015/16 reboot "Vargr"), Antony explains in Episode 000 the history of James Bond on the comic book page, detailing how the "funny book" version pre-dates the cinematic Bond by almost four years.

Utilising the Licence to Queer queer view system (Bond, Allies, Girls, Villains, Camp), Antony and David tackle the first in Dynamite Entertainment's long line of James Bond comic books: Vargr by Warren Ellis and Jason Masters from late 2015.

Hello dear listeners. A few months ago we reviewed the first comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment, Vargr (we're still not sure how to pronounce it). Now we're back for what we hope will be more than just sloppy seconds, Eidolon (I-dough-lon? Aïe-do-lon? Eye-do-lon?...). Bond is back in action and heads to America (briefly) to extract one Cadence Birdwhistle, with whom he makes wonderful music. A secretive plot to infiltrate MI5, corrupt officials left and right, the return of SPECTRE, all led by a villain with a face only a mother would love, and even that's debatable.

This week, Mathieu and Edgar venture into a platform that has not featured 007 for many years: the comic book. In the first of an ongoing series of published stories, Vargr is a modern day interpretation of Ian Fleming's James Bond. The hosts give their due diligence in discussing a plethora of colourful traits, such as a massive henchman with no feelings, an assassin with bionic arms, a dastardly drug, and as much blood gushing as ink used to actually produce the book!

007 also appears regularly in comic books so Richard introduces Jonathan to some recent releases; Vargr and Eidolon, written by Warren Ellis and the post-Brexit one-shot Service, written by Kieron Gillen. Service deals with white supremacists, Vargr with bionic experiments and Eidolon with double-crossing inside British intelligence. These are much more gritty and graphically violent than usual Bond fare, showing how much variation there can be in adaptations of the James Bond character.   But they run out of things to say about that so they also discuss the potential of Bond TV shows and cinematic universes, HBO's announcement of their upcoming alternate history series "Confederate" and even the promotion of the Mayweather-McGregor fight. Selma Grundströms liv kantades av många svåra sorger och förluster. Hon blev änka vid tidig ålder och förlorade senare alla sina barn i difteri. Nybyggarnas liv var ofta hårt och slitsamt. Under 1600-talet blev det allt viktigare för svenska staten att hävda sitt territorium i de svenska fjällen. Genom att locka med skattefrihet och frihet från militärtjänst försökte man få folk att etablera nybyggen allt längre upp i fjälltrakterna. Och det var många som nappade på erbjudanet. Men nybyggarlivet blev ofta svårt i det här landskapet med sina korta odlingssäsonger. En av dem som fick uppleva den här tiden var Anna Selma Kristina Berg. Hon föddes 1859 i en liten by utanför Ammarnäs i Västerbottens fjällvärld.  Hennes historia kom i dagen när en grupp på åtta kvinnor i dagens Ammarnäs bestämde sig för att ta reda på mer om några av de kvinnor som levde i byn på 1800- talet. Till sin hjälp hade de den bokserie om Sorseles historia som släktforskaren Thea Hälleberg skrivit och som innehöll alla uppgifter från kyrköckerna. En av de kvinnor som valdes ut var Selma som med tiden fick namnet efternamnet Grundström. Inger Grundström som är en sentida släkting till Selma tar oss med till Selmas hus som står kvar mitt i byn. - Det här är nog det mest genuina huset i Ammarnäs eftersom det enbart har använts som fritidshus sedan Selma och hennes man Olof dog, berättar Inger Grundström. Den första stora sorgen drabbade Selma när hon ännu bara var en liten flicka och hon lämnades ensam då föräldrarna måste arbeta långt från hemmet. - Hennes barndomshem brann ner hon var åtta nio år och hon lämnades hos sin morbror i Hällnäs. Familjen upplöstes när föräldrarna drog iväg neråt landet för att frösörja sig. När Selma var 13 år bestämde hon sig för att söka upp sina föräldrar och fick följa med när det var kyrkohelg i Sorsele. Där fick hon veta var föräldrarna fanns och tog sig själv vidare till dem. - Hon gick från by till by och frågade efter dem. När hon kom till gården där de bodde var föräldrarna ute och fiskade. Hon gömde sig och när mor och far kom hem kände de först inte igen henne, så många år hade gått.  Inger får tårar i ögonen när hon berättar om detta. - Det är så rörande det här, säger Inger Grundström. Vad som sen hände med Selma vet ingen. Men hon dyker upp i arkiven igen när hon är vuxen och har sökt sig till sin hemby. Där träffar hon sin blivande Bror Johan Hansson. Strax efter giftermålet ger det unga paret sig iväg till Lofoten i Norge där de ska försörja sig på fiske. Med sig har de också en bror till Selmas man. Och nu är det dags för Selmas nästa stora sorg. - Under en vinter drunknade både hennes man och hans bror. Kvar var Selma med sin ett år gamla son som hon sommaren därpå vandrar med tillbaka till sin hemby. Längtan fanns att komma hem där hon skulle kunna  försörja sig på något vis. Hon träffar Anders Olof Grundström, Ingers farfars bror, och gifter sig.  - Vad man kan läsa ut av gamla handlingar bodde de i Holmsund ett tag. De får barn på barn mellan 1884 och 1894. Men då 1894 drabbas många i Ammarnäs av difteri. I kyrkböckernas dödbok från Ammarnäs vid den här tiden kan man läsa om hur familj efter familj i Ammarnäs förlorar sina barn i sjukdomen difteri. Selmas barn Olof Artur Reinhold dör 10 år gammal i juli 1894 och i augusti dör två av hennes andra barn 9 och 4 år gamla. Och det sista barnet Anders Reinhold dör i slutet av september 1 månad gammal. - Man kan inte förstå sorgen i detta efter alla svårigheter som hon tidigare drabbats av. Men sen kom sorgen när dottern Hedda föddes. När Hedda var 18 år började Selma skriva dagbok, en rad för varje dag fram till hennes död. Men där finns inga spår av de svårigheter hon upplevt, berättar Inger. 6 februari 1914 Länsman var här idag, ransakande i Strömgrens. 7 februari Pulver från doktorn. Ingen tidning. 8 februari Vi alla i vårt hem var bjudna till Nabbnes. 9 februari Otto kört timret åt aresten, bra väder. 11 februari Vargrännarna kom från fjället, ingen varg. 15 februari Tack god Gud för jag ha sån hälsa, fått gå i kyrkan.     Staten lockade nybyggare Det tuffa inlandsklimatet ställde stora krav på nybyggarnas odlingsskicklighet. Lars Rumar som är historiker och före detta landsarkivarie i Östersund har sett att det framförallt var nybildade familjer från kusttrakterna som lockades till nybyggarlivet. Allt sedan 1600-talet har den svenska staten medvetet försökt uppmana folk att bosätta sig i fjällvärlden. Historikern Lars Rumar är före detta landsarkivarie i Östersund och har också har sina egna rötter bland nybyggare i Västerbotten. Det främsta lockbetet för att få folk att bli nybyggare var löftet om att man skulle få ett antal år av skattefrihet, berättar han. - De första 15 åren behövde de inte betala skatt. Det var ju ett uttryck för statens vilja att befolka det som man betraktade som rena ödemarker med folk som kunde betala skatt och som också kunde föra upp det som man betraktades som civilisation. Den samiska renskötseln betraktades inte riktigt som civilisation på 1600-talet utan staten ville ”civilisera” samerna. - Då var det bra att ha ett antal nybyggare som bodde ute bland samerna som kunde föra kyrkans budskap vidare. - Och det fanns ju givetvis ett ekonomiskt skäl till att stötta nybyggarna, och det var att under den merkantilistiska eran i svensk politik på 16- och 1700-talen  så tyckte man att det var slöseri att det fanns svenska markområden som inte utnyttjades. Staten gjorde flera markeringar av var någonstans det borde finnas nybyggen. - Först drog man det som kallades ”Lappmarksgränsen” i mitten av 1700-talet, och idén med den var att marken skulle reserveras för nybyggare och samer, och kustmarksbönder skulle hållas borta därifrån. - Många tror att Lappmarksgränsen handlade om samernas renar, så att de inte skulle få beta nedanför den, säger Lars Rumar.  I själva verket var det alltså en statlig åtgärd som skulle stötta nybyggarna. Med tiden trängde den fasta bebyggelsen längre och längre upp i fjällen vilket ställde till det för samerna som blev undanträngda. - Då skapade man i slutet av 1800-talet en ny gräns, den som kallades Odlingsgränsen. Tanken var att det inte skulle få anläggas några nya nybyggen ovanför den gränsen, men det fanns redan ett stort antal nybyggen, och dessutom var det lite si och så med hur man följde lagen, säger Lars Rumar. Det fanns också samer som ville starta nybyggen. - Men de fick oftast inte de där 15 åren av skattefrihet, berättar Rumar. Staten ansåg nämligen att samerna inte hade någon vana vid jordbruk och menade att de inte kunde uppfylla statens förväntningar på nybyggen. Längre fram i historien, när det fanns egnahems-lån att få för nybyggare, så gjordes undantag för de samiska nybyggarna. - Samerna diskriminerades rakt igenom, kommenterar Lars Rumar. Nybyggarlivet ett alternativ för unga människor som var utan egen jord men som behövde kunna försörja sig. När emigrationen tog fart längre söderut i landet så blev också de norrländska nybyggena fler. - De som flyttade upp till nybyggena kom norrifrån, det var så speciella förhållanden som rådde att de som kom söderifrån oftast inte klarade av livet däruppe. Nybyggarna blev allt fler. År 1800 gick det 600 samer på 50 nybyggare. Hundra år senare var förhållandet det motsatta. Det var kolossala förändringar som skedde. Det uppstod många konflikter mellan nybyggare och samer, en del av dem skapades av staten när man gav sämre villkor åt samiska nybyggare.   Konflikterna uppstod där man möttes, och handlade oftast om marken. Nybyggena placerades på  land som samerna tidigare hade kunnat använda , och nybyggarna å sin sida blev irriterade när renskötarnas renar kom ner från fjället och åt på deras insamlade hö i stackar och hässjor. - Det är klart att det uppstod konflikter runt det här, och därför kom det förordningar om att nybyggarna skulle inhägna sina hässjor och stackar med staket i en viss höjd, men det gjordes inte alltid, så det blev ett evigt gnissel. Lars Rumar själv har sina rötter bland nybyggare. Hans farfar Hugo beskrev hur livet hade tett sig för hans föräldrar i de västerbottniska fjällen under nödåren på 1860-talet. Det egna huset var redan fullt av familjens nio barn när det kom fler nattgäster – det var bönder som var på väg till Norge. Jag minns den vintern väl. Den var mycket kall. Vid Andersmässtiden kom det ovanligt många hästar och käppskrindor på gården. Det var lasskörare som skulle fara till Rana i Norge för att hämta korn och mjöl. Det var sådana forbönder som kommit och fick sitt nattlogi hos oss bland den talrika barnaskaran. Hur far och mor kunde härbärgera dem det förstår jag inte. Under den långa vinterkvällen sutto de vid en väldiga brasan i öppna spisen och talade om den mat; bröd, gröt och pannkaka man tillredde av granarnas och björkarnas hängen. Det blev en nästan svart mat, men hade man litet mjöl att blanda i laven, så blev det mjölsmak, tyckte de. Bland forbönderna var även den humoristiske nämndemannen Salomon Persson, som skämtade med dem om att de blivit så högfärdiga att de målat rosor på kinderna. Det blev ett skämtande och skrattande. De var alls inte ledsna, fastän alla fått frostskador. - Spannmålsodlingen i de här trakterna var väldigt liten, men det fanns ju ändå kornodling närmast gårdarna, men de här åren slog skördarna fullständigt fel, och det var likadant med potatisen, säger Rumar. Man var tvungen att leta rätt på närmast tillgängliga plats där det fanns säd att få tag på, och det var ju i det här fallet Norge. När fororna kom tog man emot dem, för det krävde gästfriheten, men det blev oerhört trångt i den lilla stugan. - Famnen måste stå öppen för dem som kom resande, så var det nog generellt i Norrland, tror Lars Rumar. Men nybyggarlivet innebar inte bara elände. - Man ska inte tro att bygderna närmast fjällen är magra beten – det är tvärt om så att många av de bästa betesmarkerna ligger längs och på fjällen – så där uppstod ju också en konkurrens mellan nybyggare och samer. Arbetsmoralen bland nybyggarna var oerhört sträng. Barnen fick tidigt ge sig ut ensamma och valla djur. Alla måste hjälpa till. - Nybyggarna överlevde ju, men det krävde en himla kämpavilja. Det hårda livet blev, som vi hörde i berättelsen från Ammarnäs, extra svårt när sjukdomar slog till. Men det isolerade livet innebar också ett visst skydd från smittor.  Lars Rumar har studerat barnadödligheten i Jämtland och sett att den faktiskt inte var så hög jämfört med samhället i stort. - Barnadödligheten var snarast lägre i Jämtlands fjälltrakter, och jag tror det berodde på smittrisken. Men NÄR smittorna kom och slog till i en familj, då kunde det vara dramatiskt. Det dröjde länge innan det fanns någon regelrätt sjukvård för folket i Norrlands inland, och Statens representanter i form av präster, lärare och läkare skickades dit först när nybyggena var etablera sedan länge. - Länsman lyckades man få upp först, men sjukvården kom väldigt sent. Det man gjorde var att man spred information om hur man kunde förebygga sjukdomar, och den insatsen gjordes mycket av prästerna, som fick en liten kortare utbildning i medicin, så de hade en mycket bredare roll än vad de har idag, slutar Lars Rumar.
