Send us a textBran and company are north of the Wall. Things are bleak but Coldhands protects them from those who would do them harm, and brings back some meat to roast. Simon and Jenny throw up in the back of their throats.Chapter Review:Bran Stark rides on Hodor's shoulders, Meera and an increasingly frail Jojen ride on Coldhands elk. Coldhands keeps his face obscured, but there's no hiding the coldness of the hands, nor the fact that his breath doesn't frost before him like the others. As Summer, Bran also notices that their guide smells dead. The former brother of the Night's Watch has ravens who report that they're being followed. He leaves the party to deal with the pursuit while the remainder seek an abandoned village in which to rest. Bran wargs into Summer and finds wolves fighting over dead humans. This is Varmyr's little pack, who quickly bend the knee to Summer and allow him the lion's share of the meat. Bran comes back into himself.Coldhands has dealt with the danger, and has slaughtered a pig for them to eat. As they eat they ask the man questions. He explains his appearance is to do with him being dead. He also explains that they seek the Three-Eyed Crow: “A friend, dreamer, wizard. The last Greenseer.”Characters/Places/Names/Events:Brandon Stark - Prince (now king?) of Winterfell. Paralyzed when pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister.Hodor - Enormous but simple-minded helper of Bran.Meera Reed - Daughter of Howland Reed.Jojen Reed - Son of Howland Reed. Has green dreams that invariably come true.Summer - Bran's direwolf.Coldhands - Seemingly reanimated brother of the Night's Watch.Old Nan - Ancient storyteller at Winterfell. This month, Fiona meets Åsa Gregers-Warg, head gardener at Beth Chatto Plants and Gardens. They tour the gardens, and reflect on Beth Chatto's legacy, discussing how we can adapt our gardens to promote resilience and withstand changing environmental conditions. “We haven't used any herbicides or pesticides for the last few years. And we all have to be water wise these days as well. It started off with the gravel garden being the only part of the garden that was never irrigated. But since a couple of years ago, we don't water the rest of the gardens either.” Also in this episode… Fiona and Chris are preparing their gardens for winter, even in the cooler months there's still plenty to do! In the postbag, the team tackle questions on reusing old compost, dealing with coddling moth, and why it's crucial not to leave soil bare at this time of year. A Warg is hunting the podcast for food! Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're going to be talking about Rimworld, a colony sim strategy game. Rimworld is one of those games that you probably either already love or have never heard of, which is to say, it is exactly what its audience wants it to be, but appears absolutely inscrutable from the outside looking in. In Rimworld, your goal is predominately just to survive by collecting resources, managing colonists, and handling combat, all of which can become vastly more overwhelming than it appears on the surface. That sense of not being able to quite manage everything feels like it is an intentional decision, though. The game bills itself as a “story generator,” and a well-oiled machine of a colony, while satisfying, doesn't exactly generate many stories. Having to handle unexpected breaks in the system, and in your colonist's emotional state, keep things feeling tense and unexpected. As a simulation-heavy game, and one made by an extremely small team, there isn't much power left for the cutting edge graphics, which have not been pumped up on level three, that you may be used to in modern games, but it's simplistic style fits well and is part of a presentation that does not slouch in other areas. The sound design in particular is outstanding, with instantly recognizable sound cues for different actions and events, and a soundtrack that will, subjectively, rock you into another dimension. The UI, on the other hand, can be a bit confusing at times and lends the game its notoriety for being immensely difficult to get into if you're new to the genre. It is a complicated game with a lot of deep systems and a lot of strategies to learn and develop, so you'll have to listen to see how we adapted. We're going to be talking about the struggles of starting the game, the wackiness the mechanics can bring to the table, and determine which famous work of Spanish surrealist art it most resembles. Thank you for listening this week! Once you listen to the episode, it will become abundantly clear that one of us in particular is a massive fan of this game, so it comes highly recommended if you can stomach the learning curve and the amount of time it will suck out of your life. But I also get that it's a tough game to start, so we'd love to hear your experiences. Have you been playing for years, or did you pick it up recently? Have you played with the DLCs or only vanilla? What do you think about Thrumbos? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord. Next time, we're going to be finally talking about Kingdom Hearts 2, the last in the main trilogy we haven't talked about so expect that to be kind of the reverse of this episode. We hope you'll join us then!

They ask him about the state of certain castles on the west side of the Wall and want to know how often Night's Watch patrols inspect the length of the Wall. Jon reluctantly gives them the information. Styr next asks about the total numbers of the Night's Watch. Jon exaggerates a bit and Jarl calls him out as a liar. After he's dismissed, he goes in search of Yigrette. The pair have been having sex on a very regular basis, and the guilt has weighed on Jon. However, with each time they're intimate, he feels less and less guilty. He finds Yigrette in a hidden cave. The couple discuss Jon having stolen Yigrette. It's a fact Jon disputes, claiming he didn't even know she was a girl when he put the dagger to her throat, on the mountain. The couple get down to business twice before the torch goes out. Yigrette suggests they make their way deep into the cavern system and leave the rest of it all behind.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Member of the Night's Watch. The Latest Milestones on WebAssembly's Road to Maturity

DETROIT — Even in the midst of hand-wringing at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America about how the global economy will make it tough for startups to gain support in the near future, the news about a couple of young WebAssembly-centric companies was bright. Cosmonic announced that it had raised $8.5 million in a seed round led by Vertex Ventures. And Fermyon Technologies unveiled both funding and product news: a $20 million A Series led by Insight Partners (which also owns The New Stack) and the launch of Fermyon Cloud, a hosted platform for running WebAssembly (Wasm) microservices. Both Cosmonic and Fermyon were founded in 2021. “A lot of people think that Wasm is this maybe up and coming thing, or it's just totally new thing that's out there in the future,” noted Bailey Hayes, a director at Cosmonic, in this episode of The New Stack Makers podcast. But the future is already here, she said: “It's one of technology's best kept secrets, because you're using it today, all over. And many of the applications that we use day-to-day —  Zoom, Google Meet, Prime Video, I mean, it really is everywhere. The thing that's going to change for developers is that this will be their compilation target in their build file.” In this On the Road episode of Makers, recorded at KubeCon here in the Motor City, Hayes and Kate Goldenring, a software engineer at Fermyon, spoke to Heather Joslyn, TNS' features editor, about the state of WebAssembly. This episode was sponsored by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Wasm and Docker, Java, Python WebAssembly – the roughly five-year-old binary instruction format for a stack-based virtual machine, is designed to execute binary code on the web, lets developers bring the performance of languages like C, C++, and Rust to the web development area. At Wasm Day, a co-located event that preceded KubeCon, support for a number of other languages — including Java, .Net, Python and PHP — was announced. At the same event, Docker also revealed that it has added Wasm as a runtime that developers can target; that feature is now in beta. Such steps move WebAssembly closer to fulfilling its promise to devs that they can “build once, run anywhere.” “With Wasm, developers shouldn't need to know necessarily that it's their compilation target,” said Hayes. But, she added, “what you do know is that you're now able to move that Wasm module anywhere in any cloud. The same one that you built on your desktop that might be on Windows can go and run on an ARM Linux server.” Goldenring pointed to the findings of the CNCF's “mini survey” of WebAssembly users,  released at Wasm Day, as evidence that the technology's user cases are proliferating quickly. “Even though WebAssembly was made for the web, the number one response —it was around a little over 60% — said serverless,” she noted. “And then it said, the edge and then it said web development, and then it said IoT, and the use cases just keep going. And that's because it is this incredibly powerful, portable target that you can put in all these different use cases. It's secure, it has instant startup time.” Worlds and Warg Craft The podcast guests talked about recent efforts to make it easier to use Wasm, share code and reuse it, including the development of the component model, which proponents hope will simplify how WebAssembly works outside the browser. Goldenring and Hayes discussed efforts now under construction, including “worlds” files and Warg, a package registry for WebAssembly. (Hayes co-presented at Wasm Day on the work being done on WebAssembly package management, including Warg.) A world file, Hayes said, is a way of defining your environment.  "One way to think of it is like .profile, but for Wasm, for a component. And so it tells me what types of capabilities I need for my web module to run successfully in the runtime and can read that and give me the right stuff.” And as for Warg, Hayes said: “It's really a protocol and a set of APIs, so that we can slot it into existing ecosystems. A lot of people think of it as us trying to pave over existing technologies. And that's really not the case. The purpose of Warg is to be able to slot right in, so that you continue working in your current developer environment and experience and using the packages that you're used to. But get all of the advantages of the component model, which is this new specification we've been working on" at the W3C's WebAssembly Working Group. Goldenring added another finding from the CNCF survey: “Around 30% of people wanted better code reuse. That's a sign of a more mature ecosystem. So having something like Warg is going to help everyone who's involved in the server side of the WebAssembly space.” Listen to the full conversation to learn more about WebAssembly and how these two companies are tackling its challenges for developers.

Jon Snow has a busy day. He discovers that the wildling host contains giants, and lots of them. He and Tormund discuss the pros and cons of Jon bedding Yigrette. Jon gets attacked by an eagle. Finally, he gets called out on his lie about how many of the Night's Watch were north of the Wall. His day seems to be heading toward wrapping up with a tryst with Yigrette. Simon and Mackelly flip on the Do Not Disturb sign.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane watch a procession of giants mounted on wooly mammoths ride by. After that, the pair make their way toward the front of the host. On the way, Jon tries in vain to explain to Tormund why he hasn't touched Yigrette, despite her clear advances. The idea of a bastard child being an unwanted result of Jon bedding Yigrette is beyond Tormund's comprehension. They catch up with Yigrette. She and some of the other wildlings treat Jon to a rousing rendition of “The Last of the Giants.” After the song fades, Jon is attacked by an eagle that gouges his face with its talons. The eagle heralds the arrival of Rattleshirt, who announces that he's to take Jon to Mance Rayder.Yigrette accompanies Jon to the top of the First of the First Men, where Mance waits. Along the way, they discover the bodies of dead horses strewn about the slope of the hill. Mance wants Jon to tell him true how many Black Brothers there were and who led them. Mackelly and Simon wonder if the old crow might be a bit too trusting.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Ghost are escorted through the wildling encampment on the banks of the Milkwater. Jon cannot count the cookfires. The numbers are extraordinary. With his training he does notice that the structure and defenses are pitiful. Even 300 brothers of the Night's Watch could inflict incalculable losses on the wildlings, unless they tighten things up.He's shown into Mance Rayder's tent and mistakes Styr for Mance. The king-beyond-the-wall turns out to be the musician. Rattleshirt repeats his misgivings about Jon. Mance tells Jon that they've met before. Most recently when disguised as a singer, Mance entered Winterfell while King Robert Baratheon visited. Mance describes his desertion when he was saved by a wildling woman who repaired his tattered cloak with red silk. On arrival back at the Wall, he was reissued the regulation black cloak. Much to the shock and chagrin on our audience, the stars have aligned here on Terminus to provide an episode of nearly exclusively death metal! Melodies? NO. Keyboards? NO. Satan? KIND OF BUT IT'S COMPLICATED. Before we get into the gruesome and guttural though, we have a small concession for the skinnier and more artistic listeners: that of the debut demo by Grave Chalice, an industrialized black metal project featuring Warg of Heretical Sect which takes a foundation of Grand Declaration of War and enhances it with modern technique- definitely a project to look out for. Ominous carrion winds blow in from the east announcing the arrival of Aparthiva Raktadhara's debut record. Notorious members of the Kolkata Inner Order, the band has taken a surprising move on this release by in large part leaving their warnoise roots for colder, more alienating death metal pastures. The root riffing style of Morbid Angel's most difficult moments is expanded upon with brutal death drum technique and utterly deranged song structures making for something that feels equally at home in 1992 as it does in 2046. No more spoilers- this is one of the best records of the year. On the flipside is the triumphant return of Holocausto Canibal, long-running Portuguese grindgore purveyors whose long absence (at least in terms of full-lengths) has done nothing to soften their bite. Continuing in the footsteps of artists like Haemorrhage, HC provide (human) meat and potatoes goresoaked deathgrind with a crusty hardcore edge that may be more relevant now than ever before. Gravity blasts good, lyrics about space bad- there's a reason this style has existed for almost 30 years. 0:00:00 - Intro/Grave Chalice - Demo MMXXII (Mercurial Gate) 0:17:54 - Aparthiva Raktadhara - Adyapeeth Maranasamhita (আদ্যাপীঠ মরণসংহিতা) (Iron Bonehead) 1:07:21 - Prosanctus Inferi - “Apex Jaws in Madrigal Posture” fr. Finally, we check in with the elves, who are all about skedaddling the hell out of town. See ya, World of Men!
