On todays episode of family flowers only I speak to Aidan Brennan Aidan is from Roscommon, husband to Tracey and Dad to Evan. Aidans wife Tracey was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer in 2017 following a smear test. She went on to advocate for access to the drug Pembroe and campaigned alongside Vicky Phelan and Aine Morgan, the drug was made available for the women of Ireland something Tracey and the other ladies valiantly fought for. Unfortunately the drug did not work for Tracey and she sadly lost her life to Cancer in 2019. Aidan shared with me so openly about his grief, the reality of being left to raise a young child alone and how overwhelming the loneliness can be at times I hope this episode helps you in some way. E23 The Fifth Court top team starts, as usual, with 3 cases from the Decisis.ie casebook.7.00"Cian O'Carroll, Cashel based solicitor, known for his work on cervical screening cases, particularly the Vicky Phelan case that moved a nation. He discusses his views on medical negligence cases. He is candidly open about the tragic 1990 death of his father, a shocking occurrence that that led him away from a science degree to the law. This changed his life in a fundamental way. He worked for a period in a Cashel, Tipperary practice with solicitor John Lynch. He established his own practice in 2010, largely focussed on medical negligence.Vicky Phelan came to him, as a client, on January 2018 and he knew immediately he needed to push the case very quickly. 'She was just a wonderful person' he says. She was 'purposeful' according to Cian who added, that she was the most altruistic person he ever met.He describes the introduction of a non-disclosure agreement by the other side in the Phelan case.He discusses other similar cases involving screening programmes including BreastCheck, bowel screening and glaucoma screening. He has some very strong words about the HSE's approach to aspects of the screening programme and its use of the court system. He's very complimentary about Judge Kevin Cross who was helpful in moving the case along, conscious of that time was, unfortunately, limited for Ms. Phelan.32.00"He talks about a current eleven month backlog in court cases in his area of practice and he gives his views on the medical profession who feel they are 'put upon' because of the standards they say they are expected to meet.34.00" He talks about solicitors referring clients to doctors (or not) and he refers to a previous Fifth Court discussion with Dr. Declan Keane, about 'expert shopping'.He speaks up about legal costs, solicitors fees and the way in which his practice deals with these costs. His 'cultural recommendation' for lawyers? The movie, 'My Cousin Vinny'. Great choice.Book, 'Brideshead Revisited', for the magistrate's court scene in the book. Please share this podcast with your colleagues. Hosted on Acast. The solidarity across the House on the Patient Safety Bill was a fitting tribute to Vicky Phelan. Áine Lawlor is joined by Sorcha Ní Riada, Micheál Lehane and Paul Cunningham to ask how the citizens' assembly might tackle the endemic scourge of heroin, what we can expect on cost-of-living supports, and the political perils posed by wine bars.
A special look-back to some of the guests Miriam spoke to during 2022 - Anne Enright, Brian Cox, Vicky Phelan with Vincent Devine and David Brennan, Kieran and Orla Walsh, Patrick Kielty, John Boorman with Brendan Gleeson, Phil Coulter
Call the paps! Today we've got a smear campaign and it's all about the CervicalCheck scandal. Our leading lady is whistleblower Vicky Phelan. A criminally incompetent lab in Texas and a negligent cover up that's costing lives? Salt in the wound, indeed. And speaking of cancer scams (our Favre-ite kind of gossip), is sodium the cure-all or just another one of Stefano's snake oils? Listener letters ask: why is real support so hard to find in a group? And is replacing a beloved care provider-turned-friend like finding a second needle in a haystack? RATS wonders if a low protein diet can help chemo's efficacy in treating colon cancer.
