Using Longitudinal Sleep Data as a Vital Sign to Predict Disease Risk with Colin Lawlor Sleep ai

Colin Lawlor, CEO of Sleep ai, is focused on exploring sleep intelligence and sleep as a vital sign of health. The Sleep ai platform measures sleep longitudinally using data from consumer wearables and smartphones, with an emphasis on night-to-night variability, which is not captured in a single-night sleep lab. Poor sleep and variation in sleep patterns have been identified as highly predictive indicators of over 130 chronic diseases and have an impact on mental well-being and the effectiveness of medical treatments. Colin explains, "What we're doing is we're measuring sleep longitudinally, over the long term, and we're measuring it from whatever device the consumer has. For some consumers or patients, it may be wearable, and there are many, many different wearables, or for others, it's simply from their phone. We have the ability to collect high-quality sleep data from everyone every day. And that's really important because when we get into this, we'll talk about why longitudinal measurement is really helpful in dealing with sleep challenges themselves, but also in seeing sleep as a window into literally everything to do with our health."   "There are several factors going on here. The first one is that globally, four billion people wake up tired almost every day. We do not have, and we will never have, a sufficient number of sleep labs to send all of them for a one-night study. And if we collect data for only one night, we're only getting one picture of how that person is sleeping. But as we all know, life gets in the way. We may have had a stressful day, or we may have had an argument with our significant other. We may be suffering from a cold."   "Whatever it is, all of these multiple factors influence sleep. So if we over-rely on one data point to understand what's going on, it's just not sufficient. So what we are finding is that, actually, the variance night to night is probably the most useful and insightful thing we can see. Because when we look at the variance across many nights, we have a much more accurate picture of what's happening with the person's sleep, and that's highly predictive of many, many other conditions, issues, and challenges."  #SleepAI #DigitalHealth #SleepAsAVitalSign #ChronicDisease #PopulationHealth #AIinHealthcare #Wearables #LongitudinalData #SleepHealth, #SleepScience  sleep.ai Download the transcript here

He talks about fear as the starting line of growth, why the right agenda matters more than the longest to-do list, and how leaders build belief by creating cultures where people know they can make a difference. Now in retirement, David is thinking about identity, relevance, and what it means to keep growing when the operating rhythm suddenly goes quiet

Courts have become central players in some of Canada's biggest political and moral debates – especially since the advent of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That's raised hard questions about their role, what accountability mechanisms exist, and how Canadians understand the place of the judicial branch within their system of government.Like any other institution, courts depend on public trust which must be earned and sustained.McMaster University political science professor Andrea Lawlor has been tracking how Canadians perceive this institution. She joins Inside Policy Talks to discuss her findings.Lawlor's research, conducted with Acadia University's Erin Crandall, finds that Canadians still generally trust the courts, but this confidence has shown signs of decline, and it appears attitudes are becoming more politicized. On the podcast, Lawlor tells Peter Copeland, deputy director of domestic policy at MLI, that her research found little shift in how Canadians on the political left perceive the courts. However, she has observed a moderate decline in support from those on the right – particularly tied to court decisions on moral issues like medical assistance in dying. However, Lawlor says there is one type of court ruling that tends to register a public reaction across the political spectrum: criminal sentencing.“Those tend to uniformly push public opinion,” says Lawlor. “I think there was some consensus across the political spectrum that Canadians were dissatisfied … and they certainly wanted the legislature to step in.”

A chance meeting in Dublin led to a lively catch-up about how travel in Ireland is changing – and how visitors can experience so much more than the usual highlights. Boxty Sharing Platter at Gallagher's Boxty House in Temple Bar Custom Food and Whiskey Tours in Ireland What started as a Dublin food tour has grown into something much bigger. Gráinne, owner of Flavour Trails, has expanded her offerings to meet travelers who want more than a quick stop-and-go itinerary. Visitors can now choose from: Multiple Dublin food tours (including a traditional walking tour with five stops) Whiskey experiences Storytelling tours Fully customized private tours across Ireland The goal is simple: connect travelers not just to places, but to the people producing the food and drink they're enjoying. This article is based on podcast episode 337 featuring Gráinne Lawlor, owner of Flavour Trails in Dublin. Use the player below to listen or scroll to continue reading the article and get resource links.Use the player below to listen or scroll to continue reading the article and get resource links. From City Streets to the Irish Countryside While Dublin remains a fantastic base, many travelers want to explore beyond the city, and that's where these bespoke tours really shine. Options include day trips or multi-day journeys to places like: Cliffs of Moher Glendalough Giant's Causeway Donegal But these aren't typical sightseeing drives. Instead, each trip is built around immersive experiences. Travelers might: Go foraging with local experts Visit a working goat cheese farm Take part in a cookery school Tour local distilleries Meet producers behind the food One standout experience even includes a quick flight to Donegal, landing on the beach, followed by a distillery visit, dinner, and an overnight stay before exploring Glenveagh National Park. Building an Itinerary That Fits You One of the biggest shifts in Irish travel is flexibility. Instead of rigid itineraries, travelers can now shape their own experience. Want a single day out of Dublin? Choose a few curated stops.Have more time? Add more experiences and slow the pace. This approach allows visitors to: Spend more time in places they love Discover areas they may not have considered Avoid the “rush from one highlight to the next” It's a more personal way to experience Ireland—and one that leaves a lasting impression. Why Slowing Down Matters Many travelers still follow the classic routes: like heading from the Cliffs of Moher straight to Galway or rushing from Wicklow to Kilkenny. But that often means missing what makes those regions special. Take County Clare, for example. While the cliffs draw the crowds, the real magic is found when you linger: The Burren's unique landscape, where alpine, arctic, and tropical plants grow side by side Quiet moments just sitting in the landscape, rather than rushing through Small towns and local businesses that rarely make the brochures As Gráinne shared, sometimes the best travel moments come from simply staying put a little longer. Learn more about Flavour Trails in Gráinne's previous Traveling in Ireland podcast episode 282. A Taste of County Clare: Where to Eat, Stay, and Sip If you're planning to explore beyond the main attractions, County Clare is well worth your time. A Proper Irish Pub O'Loclainn's Bar in Ballyvaughan is a favorite, known for its welcoming atmosphere and excellent whiskey selection. It's the kind of place where you settle in and stay awhile. Seafood Worth the Stop The Anchor Inn in Liscannor is a standout for fresh seafood. It's the kind of meal that reminds you just how close Ireland's food is to its source. A Relaxing Stay The Falls Hotel offers a comfortable base, with a spa that's earned high praise – perfect after a day of exploring. A Unique Stop in the Burren The Burren Perfumery offers something a bit different. Even in quieter seasons, visitors can stop in for a warm drink, explore handcrafted scents, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Looking for more County Clare advice? Click here! The Ireland You Haven't Experienced Yet What stands out most is how travel in Ireland is evolving. It's no longer just about checking off landmarks, it's about connection. Connection to: The land The food The people behind it all Whether it's a quick day trip or a carefully crafted multi-day journey, there are more ways than ever to experience Ireland in a meaningful, memorable way. And sometimes, the best plan is simply to slow down, stay a little longer, and see what unfolds. Notorious Dublin criminal Robbie Lawlor was shot dead in Belfast in 2020, when he arrived at a house in the Ardoyne area of the city, to collect a drug debt.Lawlor was a 36-year-old father originally from Coolock, Dublin, though he had relocated to Laytown, Co Meath, for the final years of his life. He was the chief suspect in a number of gangland attacks, including five murders over a 15-year period to 2020.Now new details have emerged, which outline the alleged planning of the killing, and the economics that underpinned it. They are contained within a legal document, seen by Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally. It alleges a three-way coalition acted together to murder Lawlor and how the main players in this plan stood to gain financially because debts they owed would die with Lawlor, or would be cancelled as a reward for his murder. In this episode, Lally explains how the murder took place and the impact it had on the gangland scene. Sleep AI is building the world's largest sleep intelligence platform, with over a billion hours of sleep data, connections to more than a million users, and 100+ published studies. The company operates a B2B model providing sleep data infrastructure through three channels: R&D services for product validation, reimbursed digital therapeutics in Germany's healthcare system, and SDK/API partnerships that embed sleep intelligence into health apps. In a recent episode of BUILDERS, I sat down with Colin Lawlor, CEO and Founder of Sleep AI, to learn how the company transitioned from eight years of deep R&D to active commercialization and their strategy to reach a billion people through partnership distribution.Topics Discussed:The $100 billion sleep market's validation gap: only 300 of 10,000 sleep products have scientific measurementSleep AI's data collection engine: half a million data points per user annually from phones, wearables, and predictive modelsGermany's regulatory breakthrough: achieving full reimbursement for 74 million people without prescription requirementsThe device-agnostic platform strategy connecting to any data source to maximize distribution reachTransitioning from pure R&D focus to building sales, marketing, and PR functions for the first timeGTM Lessons For B2B Founders:Time product-market readiness against defensible data moats, not funding cycles: Colin invested 8-9 years collecting a billion hours of sleep data and publishing 100+ studies before scaling commercialization. This created inbound demand from companies with unsolved problems and established technical credibility that competitors can't replicate quickly. For deep-tech B2B founders, premature go-to-market before achieving technical differentiation means competing on sales execution rather than product superiority. The German reimbursement approval—a multi-year regulatory process requiring robust clinical evidence—exemplifies outcomes only accessible with patience.Collapse the technical-commercial divide by embedding experts in revenue processes: Sleep AI's scientists participate in sales conversations from initial discovery through close. This isn't consultation—it's full integration. The cultural frame Colin established: "innovation and scientific breakthroughs are great if they have an impact, but if they stay in a box...they have no impact." For technical founders, this means your PhD-level team must own customer outcomes, not just product capabilities. If your best technical minds aren't in customer conversations, you're leaving competitive advantage on the table.Position as infrastructure when solving complex, multi-intervention problems: Colin recognized no single company can solve sleep comprehensively—it requires medical diagnosis, environmental optimization, behavioral coaching, and product interventions. Rather than attempting vertical integration, Sleep AI built horizontal infrastructure (SDK/API) that makes other health companies better. The insight: "We want to reach a billion people through the companies that they already trust by being their trusted sleep partner." Infrastructure plays generate winner-take-most outcomes in fragmented markets where solution complexity exceeds any single vendor's scope.//Sponsors:Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.ioThe Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co//Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I HireSenior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. This week on the podcast, we sit down with first-time novelist Shawn Lawlor, author of Boom Road — a darkly funny, tender, and at times violent debut novel set in rural New Brunswick in 1982.   Boom Road follows Jackie O'Connor, a sawmill worker living a simple life along the banks of the Miramichi River. Jackie believes in one thing above all else: keeping your word. But when he unexpectedly inherits a large sum of money, his quiet world is thrown into chaos. Old ghosts resurface, trust becomes slippery, and suddenly everyone wants something from him. With his dog Ruby by his side and a canoe beneath him, Jackie navigates a rapidly shifting moral landscape, trying to keep both his balance and his integrity intact.   Shawn joins us to talk about the very ordinary moment that sparked the first line of the book — spotting a pair of skates hanging in someone's garage during a COVID-era walk — and how what began as a simple writing exercise slowly revealed itself to be something much bigger. Before he knew it, he was working with a publisher and holding a novel in his hands.   We also talk about: Growing up in Miramichi, New Brunswick, and how hometowns quietly shape our creative instincts Writing characters and places that feel deeply familiar — the kinds of people we all recognize from our own communities Shawn's creative life outside of writing, including theatre, music, and stand-up comedy His time teaching in Japan and how living abroad influenced his perspective and storytelling Why you don't need to be a full-time artist to make meaningful, resonant work   Shawn is funny, generous, and a natural storyteller, and this conversation is a reminder that creativity often begins not with ambition, but with attention — noticing the small details, trusting curiosity, and following the thread wherever it leads.   If you've ever wondered whether there's room in your life to make something creative alongside everything else, this episode is for you.   Watch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mikeandkristen   Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/mikeandkristen   Us on the web: www.mikeandkristen.ca Instagram: www.instagram.com/mike_and_kristen/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mikeandkristencreative Shoot us a message! What if the Volkswagen you built as a teenager never really left you? In this episode, we get into the incredible full-circle story of David Lawler and his 1971 Volkswagen Beetle from Southeast England. David bought his very first VW at just 14 years old, poured years into building it, and saw that dream rewarded when the car landed in a Volkswagen magazine in 1995. But life changes. Priorities shift. The unthinkable happens—and the car is sold. Watching your first show-winning Volkswagen drive away is a regret that never fully fades. For decades, the Beetle would resurface in David's life, always just out of reach. Nearly 30 years later, he finally gets the chance to buy it back—only to discover it's far worse than he imagined. Rather than restore what was lost, David makes a bold decision: start over and build something entirely new. The result is a radically re-imagined 1971 VW Beetle—a modern, hot-rod-inspired machine that stands completely apart from anything else in the Volkswagen world. From extensive paint and bodywork, to chop-top modifications, a full roof conversion, and a cartoon-style window treatment, this build rewrites the rulebook. The hot-rod-meets-custom interior seals the deal as a true one-off. That risk paid off in a big way. The car was selected Top Five at the VolksWorld Show and went on to land the cover of the November 2025 Volkswagen magazine. This episode covers the emotional journey, the design decisions, the fabrication challenges, and what it means to let go of the past—only to build something even better. Leaving the structure of a corporate job sounds freeing—until you're alone, trying to explain what you do in a sea of people doing the same thing. Suddenly, you're not just the expert—you're the brand, the marketer, the salesperson, all at once. The work might be solid, but getting noticed and landing clients starts to feel like a full-time hustle of its own. And the unpredictability—of income, of leads, of what comes next—can hit harder than expected when you're used to knowing where your next paycheck is coming from. John Lawlor, AI Marketing Advisor and founder of Fractional Planet, helps fractional executives grow their businesses using smart, practical tools. With a diverse background from photography to tech, he now coaches professionals through career shifts and business growth. Today, he shares how AI tools like ChatGPT and Notebook LM can simplify workflows, boost visibility, and support client outreach. He introduces his “visibility flywheel” strategy to help independents stay top-of-mind and build consistent traction. His focus: making solo work smoother, smarter, and more scalable. Stay tuned! Quotes: “AI is either going to make things worse for you or better for you, and that is really up to you—especially if you don't put the human in the loop.” “You can't have an AI book in an hour that's of any quality. It still takes time to do things.” “If you talk about something different every single day, people don't know where to place you. But if you talk essentially about the same thing and find different angles to it, that's important.” Resources: Fractional Planet Follow John Lawlor on Facebook Connect with John Lawlor on LinkedIn
