By 2001, a lot had changed for the nascent emerging church movement: Doug Pagitt left Leadership Network to start a church, and shortly thereafter, Leadership Network shut down the Young Leaders Network. (Also, a notorious pastor in Seattle was asked to leave the group.) The “Group of 20” became the “Terra Nova Project,” before ultimately settling on the name, Emergent Village. Ecclesia Church in Houston hosted a conference on the Bible in postmodern society – it was a success, and the momentum increased. Then came book deals and the Emergent Convention, so that by 2005, the movement was at its peak. Guests in this episode include Dwight Friesen, Doug Pagitt, Brian McLaren, Brad Smith, Lilly Lewin, Mark Scandrette, Chris Seay, Michael Toy, and Mark Oestreicher. Music by The Cobalt Season (compliments of Ryan Sharp), Solomon's Porch (compliments of Ben Johnson), Ecclesia and The Voice Bible thanks to Chris Seay. Emerged is a crowdfunded project. Many people point to the Re:Evaluation Forum, held at the Glorieta Conference Center in October, 1998, as the birth of the Emerging Church Movement. That gathering followed a chain of events that included the founding of Young Leaders Network in 1993, and seminal conferences at Glen Eyrie in 1996 and Mt. Hermon in 1997. And at that latter conference, Mark Driscoll made his national debut — he also had to ask for forgiveness from the audience. Ultimately, after some planning meetings, The National Re:Evaluation Forum was held and, as Chris Seay says in this episode, “There's pre-Glorieta and there's post-Glorieta.” Also, Brian McLaren arrives on the scene. Guests on this episode include Doug Pagitt, Brian McLaren, Brad Smith, Morgan Leigh McKenna, Brad Cecil, Tim Conder, Andrew Jones, and Chris Seay. Music by The Cobalt Season (compliments of Ryan Sharp), Solomon's Porch (compliments of Ben Johnson), Ecclesia and The Voice Bible thanks to Chris Seay. Learn more about your ad choices. Pastor and speaker Sean Palmer understands firsthand the challenges of communicating effectively with those who have a variety of backgrounds, personalities, and perspectives. Throughout the different seasons of his life living in Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas, Sean learned how to navigate a multitude of new cultures and people groups. Many of those relationships and experiences proved to be costly, and yet, he found a great calling even in those spaces. This episode highlights Sean's passion for helping people become better communicators using Enneagram wisdom. Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! In today's episode I am welcoming back my friend, THE Red-Haired Archeologist, Amanda Hope Haley. Amanda Hope Haley has a bachelor of arts in Religious Studies from Rhodes College and a master of theological studies in Hebrew Scripture and Interpretation from Harvard University. She is a lover of the Bible–its God, its words, its people, and its history. She writes and podcasts as the Red-Haired Archaeologist, bringing readers and listeners on her journeys to understand artifacts that can contextualize Scripture. She contributed to The Voice Bible as a translator, writer, and editor; and she has been a content editor and ghost writer for popular Christian authors. Last time she was on the podcast, she shared some things we may have missed from our translations of the Bible. In this episode, Amanda and I discuss the Christmas story and things you didn't know you didn't know. Amanda shares about the common traditions surrounding Christmas, such as the nativity scene and the Three Wise Men, that give us a historically inaccurate and misrepresented picture of our savior's birth. Amanda and I discussed: - The historical timeline surrounding the birth of Jesus - Why Mary and Joseph had to stay in a stable - Where and when our common Christmas traditions began Thank you for listening today! You can connect with Amanda through Facebook, Instagram, and her website! You can also find her books on Amazon or wherever you buy your books! They make excellent Christmas presents. FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *The iconic nativity scenes we see all around us this time of year and grew up with, are not historically accurate! But we can still love and appreciate them. *"There was no room in the inn" is a poor translation... there was room, just where the animals were. *The "Three Wise Men" may not have even been three! We have no idea how many men came or even when they came. All we know is what they brought and how significant that was. *The B.C. and A.D. dating system is flawed... it's contradicted by Scripture! Jesus was born when Harod was alive, and he died before year 1 A.D. *We may try to look to science and history to "prove" Scripture, but God used miracles for a reason. Connect with Somer! Stay connected to Somer and the Love Where You Are podcast through her Facebook & Instagram! Now, go love where you are and live on mission for Jesus today.

What is really going on in the story that seemingly signals the beginning of differing languages and the migration of civilization? In Genesis 11, we hear about the tower of babel and are left with the question: what is this about? Is it simply a story told out of order or is there a deeper lesson to be learned? Sean Palmer explores these questions and more as he joins us via video from Houston, Texas. He is the teaching pastor at Ecclesia Houston and is the author of Unarmed Empire. He's also a contributing writer to The Voice Bible and serves as the vice-chair of the Missio Alliance board. If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! In this episode of a Closer Look, Pastor Cullen introduces us into one of his favorite bible translations - The Voice Bible while also looking at Jesus' first sermon in his home town recorded in Luke 4. Jesus stands before the people, and reads from the Scroll of Isaiah, a coming promise of liberation and freedom - a message of hope for hurting people. Pastor Cullen and Clayton have a conversation about what this means for us today! Happy Listening!
(00:00-09:02): Ian kicks off the show with his partner-in-crime, Katie Simkins. She is the Founder & Designer for Common Mission Women, as well as CMW Handmade Goods. CMW an ethically minded handmade women’s line that exists to encourage and empower women both through the content of our designs, and through the mission and impact of our products. (09:02-37:37): We were joined by pastor and author, Sean Palmer. He is the teaching pastor at Ecclesia Houston, a speaker, and an executive coach. He is the author of Unarmed Empire and a contributing writer to The Voice Bible. Sean is vice-chair of the Missio Alliance board. He and his wife, Rochelle, live in Houston, Texas, with their two daughters. We discussed his book “Forty Days on Being a Three”, in which he reflects on this question in a spirit of honest self-assessment. He draws wisdom from the deep wells of both counseling and spirituality using illustrations from Scripture and life. Each of the forty daily readings concludes with an opportunity for further engagement such as a journaling prompt, a written prayer, or a spiritual practice. (37:37-58:05): We spoke with Hannah Gronowski, CEO of Generation Distinct. This organization empowers young adults to discover the wrong they were born to make right, leading them to experience who Jesus really is and compelling them to lead others to experience who Jesus really is. (58:05-1:17:31): We are joined by Dr. Jim Wilder, author of the book “The Other Half of Church”. He joined us once again to discuss how the brain goes in and out of enemy mode. It becomes neurotheology because Jesus said to love our enemies. There are three depths of enemy mode for the brain: simple enemy mode, getting "stupid" enemy mode, and predatory enemy mode.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
