Welcome back to another episode of Enjoy the Vue. This concludes our three-part interview with Babel maintainer, Henry Zhu. Last time, we closed our discussion with what work maintainers of open source projects do that is not straight coding. In this episode, we continue talking with Henry about what do people count as maintenance work versus other tasks that definitely need to get done, but are perhaps less visible to the public eye. Henry also shares his approaches to taking care of himself and the pursuit of serendipity, and we discuss the inclusivity of the open source community, the relationship between in-person communities and open source culture, and we get into our picks of the week, so make sure not to miss this episode! Key Points From This Episode: Henry opens with the dichotomy between freedom and obligation for maintainers. Maintainers don’t see certain tasks as maintenance, such as answering user queries. What Henry does to take care of himself, like sport or playing music, and his musings on what serendipity looks like in an online setting. Spaces that promote serendipity, and why actively pursuing serendipity is not a paradox. There are communities like Google Summer of Code that promote open source involvement. Preferences are shaped through experiences of the communities, so it is important that they be inclusive, particularly for women. The relationship between in-person communities and open source culture. Ben’s picks this week include a ukulele, Azul, and Nadia Eghbal’s book, Working in Public. Veekas recommends Kim’s Convenience and Race After Technology by Ruha Benjamin. Henry’s picks include Tools for Conviviality by Ivan Illich, and a card game called The Mind. Tessa suggests Journey, the Reply series, and Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice. Tweetables: “How do we get people to have a higher sense of ownership so that we can lessen the burden on maintainers?” — @left_pad [0:02:37] “There's an aspect of serendipity involves risk, and involves trust and faith in something, in the future. Me putting myself out there is going to lead to something good.” — @left_pad [0:05:50] “I feel being more intentional, specifically reaching out to people, or getting involved in certain communities is probably better. There are formal versions of this, like Google Summer of Code. We've done that and Rails Girls, Summer of Code, stuff like that. Yeah, maybe we need more of that, instead of this blanket like, ‘Hey, anyone can get involved.’” — @left_pad [0:07:48] “For a tool, we want self-expression from the people that use it and I think coding is – or anything, [Illich] mentions education, and school, and medicine, and coding could be another thing where it's increasingly harder to learn how to code, even though now we have boot camps and stuff.” — @left_pad [0:17:46] Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: - Henry Zhu on Twitter (https://twitter.com/left_pad?lang=en) - Henry Zhu on GitHub (https://github.com/hzoo)  - Henry Zhu (https://www.henryzoo.com/) - Hope in Source Podcast (https://hopeinsource.com/) - Maintainers Anonymous Podcast (https://maintainersanonymous.com/) - Babel (https://babeljs.io/) - Google Summer of Code (https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/archive/) - Rails Girls (http://railsgirls.com/) - Vue Vixens (https://www.vuevixens.org/) - Working in Public (https://www.amazon.com/Working-Public-Making-Maintenance-Software/dp/0578675862) - Kim’s Convenience on Netflix (https://www.netflix.com/title/80199128)  - Race After Technology (https://www.amazon.com/Race-After-Technology-Abolitionist-Tools/dp/1509526404) - Tools for Conviviality (https://www.amazon.com/Tools-Conviviality-Ivan-Illich/dp/1842300113/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Tools+for+Conviviality&qid=1601903637&s=books&sr=1-1) - Journey (https://thatgamecompany.com/journey/) - Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice (https://www.amazon.com/Conquer-Your-Critical-Inner-Voice/dp/1572242876/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Conquer+Your+Critical+Inner+Voice&qid=1601904786&sr=8-1) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guest: Henry Zhu.

Are you struggling to decide the right time to leave your full time job to pursue your passion as a photographer? While you’re working to help someone else build their empire, are you dreaming about building your own? As my guest will tell you, it’s not always easy making the transition to a career you are passionate about, but the rewards are incredible. Henry Tieu is a wedding and elopement photographer based out of Seattle Washington. His fast growth in both popularity and creative skill come from his incredible work ethic and drive to be the best version of himself. In this interview, Henry will tell you how he made the transition from nurse to photographer and educator, exactly how he grew his instagram following in a HUGE way in just one year, and will inspire you to pursue your dreams because you can absolutely achieve them! In this episode we covered: How Henry and I met at the first workshop he taught at. (1:30) GIFs, waterfalls, and making it rain! He came to teach about Instagram, but he was inspired by the creativity and community of the workshop. You simply must see the cheese GIF and the GIF of Henry that I took! The infamous cheese GIF: My GIF of Henry: Henry’s GIF work: What Henry is doing on the backend of his business during COVID-19. (5:45) Utilizing Pinterest and diversifying his marketing during lockdown. We talk about time management and different methods for tackling tasks. We also share some quirky real life stories from quarantine too. His story of working nights as a nurse then transitioning to full time photography. (13:30) *get link of his full story* Henry got into photos through working in the ICU with a patient his own age – it woke him up to how short life is and that’s what compelled him to pick up a camera. It was a way to see the world, then became engagement and wedding photos. Within a year, he became full time at both jobs (30 weddings + 36 hours a week as a nurse). He cut down to part time and his business continued to grow, including expanding into destination work. He had the hard money talk with his husband and decided it was worth a budget cut to go full time. We talk about the realities of money and entrepreneurship. (23:00)  “Income with being full time in this photography world is scary, but it’s worth it if you do it right.” We both share our stories about the transition and joys of making the leap. Growing Instagram quickly and the effects on the business, (27:00) “Numbers don’t mean anything. You could have thousands of followers and if no one books you, you don’t have any money.” He shares the insights worth really looking at – like people who aren’t already following him that are seeing his image. “Instagram wants you to engage. It wants you to stay on the platform. And it wants other people to do the same.” Tips for Instagram:  Before he posts anything, he goes through and likes comments, replies to comments, and also leaves comments on other people’s work. He engages first. Your photos need to be captivating. Scroll stopping is the goal. Try to draw unique and different inspiration from elements, time of day, setting, poses, etc. He shares how music videos are a huge inspiration to him. It’s okay to not post everyday, but try to use Instagram stories daily. Use the features that Instagram provides like questions and polls. The personal side of Instagram growth. (35:30) Navigating sudden popularity as an introvert and trying to answer comments and DMs turning into a motivation to get out of his box. He’s become a role model for other photographers and takes that responsibility seriously. The inspiration for his art and how he makes it his own. (40:00) My photos have become my brand – people recognize my work. He shares the moment that he envisions when he’s thinking about his portfolio. When he takes people’s photos, he thinks of that and plays the music that inspires him to get the vibe he desires. He sometimes even draws out his posing inspiration as seen below.    The value of taking in good inspiration in order to have good output. (45:30) Surrounding yourself with beautiful and positive things might not always be tangible, but they show up everywhere. The people you’re with, the environments you work in, those are the little things that shape your view of the world. “How you view the world will go right back onto your creative work.”  How to expand into teaching – Henry’s journey as an educator so far. What’s rewarding? What’s negative? (47:30) “Everyone has something to share. It doesn’t matter if you have one year of experience vs five years of experience. It doesn’t matter if you have 50 followers on Instagram vs 100 followers on Instagram.” If you’re creating beautiful work and getting paid, you are doing something right that someone else could learn from you. “Don’t take people’s money until you can deliver what you promise.” Think about the limitations of your geographic area on what you’re teaching. “The most rewarding thing about education is the relationship I get to build with someone.” (No matter if it’s a workshop or free education online!) “There’s always enough room for everyone to rise together.” If you want to teach, get comparison and competition out of your mind. The downside is people thinking that he knows anything (I can relate!). There’s constant questions and people wanting to learn from him. When people only reach out when they need something, it’s a little frustrating – just be genuine. “I’m not google.” Henry’s upcoming plans. (59:00) At the time of our interview, Washington was starting to open up for sessions and elopements. (As of our most recent emails, his elopements have picked up again and he’s shooting a lot!) What Henry always remembers when asked about his early life, is the story how his parents tried to conceive him. They waited and tried for 16 years before finally having him. At two years old, he almost died after he lost all the salt in his body and he just laid in his crib, unconscious. Even in his early life, he has the ‘never-give-up’ mentality, which he sure was able to use as he grow up. He almost lost his business twice, and he went on financial insanity which almost lead to his destruction. But then again his life mantra saved him, ‘never give up’! During this time of his life- when at the peak of his business performance, Fiverr and hurricane Sandy disrupts the industry, he needed to find ways to reinvent himself. Then he realized the best way he can help his clients: branding. Him being the persistent entrepreneur taught himself about ClickFunnels and designed his brand accelerator program. Now, he is helping a lot of entrepreneurs solidify their brand and skyrocket their sales. Helping entrepreneurs help more people is what gives Henry the satisfaction today. Gone are the days of his insecure self trying to buy all the good things and showing them off. He now understands that money isn’t everything and that happiness should come from within. When you listen to this podcast in full, you’ll understand the importance of being steadfast and persistent, importance of branding and the importance of using money in a responsible way. Learn about business and life lessons with Henry Kaminski Jr, the Brand Doctor! Here’s What You Missed Henry’s life mantraHow he went from being financially insane to financially literateHappiness comes from within, not with flashy thingsReinvent yourself after a setbackThe importance of personal branding Knowledge Nuggets One of the biggest struggle Henry went through is him being pretentious and egotistical. This is because he grew up extremely insecure. He taught he needed to buy the good stuff to show off and to celebrate his wins. Today, it’s not all about money anymore. He understood that real happiness comes from within. That is why he takes great delight in seeing the wins of his client. We are blessed to hear massive chunks if wisdom from him today! [3:40] Never give up on the business you've built from a dream. [6:42] Avoid young money. It's when you get money and spend it as soon as it comes because you got to show everybody how successful you are. That is a sure way to defeat. [11:53] Follow a strict financial diet and learn financial intelligence. This is how you can responsibly take care of the money you earn. When you earn enough, you will get over of the weird sensation of money, because it'll not be about money anymore.[16:59] The road to success is not as pretty as the end result. You got to remember that the things you'll go through will not be pretty as the goal you are trying to achieve. It'll be worth it though. At the end, you will no longer try to prove anything to anybody anymore. [21:09] Money is just a tool. It is not the end and all. Money does not buy happiness, the happiness comes within. If you've chased money for years, now chase the experience. Understand what really makes you happy. [26:00] Branding vs brand assets. Branding is not the website, logo, business card, etc. Those are your brand assets, the tools you use. Branding is that gut feeling people get when they interact with you and your business. [30:52] Branding starts with you. If you don't feel confident in you, what makes you think somebody is going to be confident in buying from you? [34:22] First step of branding: Understand who you're serving. They want to 'help everybody' is the quickest way to fail the quickest way to fail. [37:57] Build your team faster/earlier. Build out systems and processes. [40:06] Try the 30-day deadline. If you say, this month I'm going to master Instagram. Focus on nothing but Instagram this month and give your all. [45:34] Saddest thing in life is wasted talent. You only have a finite period of time. If you die today, would you be okay? Or would there be a lot of should've, could've and would've?  Important Reads and Links Recommended movie: Bronx Tale by Robert De Niro Henry Kaminski Jr Website:                     https://uniquedesignz.net/Henry Kaminski Jr Instagram:                   https://www.instagram.com/thebranddr/Henry Kaminski Jr Podcast:                      https://uniquedesignz.net/the-brand-doctor-podcast/Henry Kaminski Jr Facebook:                   https://www.facebook.com/HenryKaminskiJr/Henry Kaminski Jr Twitter:                        https://twitter.com/The_Brand_DrHenry Kaminski Youtube:                         https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYx6cYRoKCMojj-NlgX6_0w Love #DreamNation? Divine Set up 3: If you don't sow, you can't reap Genesis 8:22 “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.” We are talking about Divine set ups and what that means is the providence of God in putting us in situations, or with people in order for us to get, grow or learn from so that we will be prepared for where He is bringing us. When the Lord had put me divinely back with brother Henry in 2003 until August of 2004 it was a time of preparation. A time of learning and growing and a time of getting some key principals deep down in to my spirit so that I would learn to walk by them One of the greatest lessons brother Henry taught me and in fact he just sent me a text yesterday about it is “Sow a seed, reap a Harvest.” He would always say, “You can never expect a harvest if you have not put a seed in the ground.” I can hear his voice right now saying, “If you get it in the ground you can expect a Harvest because God is so faithful to His word.” The Holy Spirit used him to teach me about tithing and the importance of tithing but also the importance of sowing. Not to just hold on to extra money but to pray about where to put that in the ground and sow it for the Kingdom of God The truth is this is a law, more then a principle For this law of sowing and reaping goes beyond ones faith in God or trust in the Lord. Every year all over the globe farmers go out and prepare their land for a seed they will put in the ground and then that seed will germinate and grow and then the farmer will go out and harvest their crop Over the years I have met so many non-believers who are strong advocates about the sowing and reaping, giving and it shall be giving back unto you law They have learned to conduct their business and guide their wealth through such a law that goes beyond dirt and water We may word it differently like investment (sowing), paying it forward (sowing), but the reality of the law is present.   Galatians 6:7-9 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.   Paul makes it clear here that this sowing and reaping law/principle goes beyond the ground and the seed He says whatever you sow, you will reap. If you sow hate, it is hate you will reap, if you sow to the flesh you will reap corruption, but if you sow to the Spirit you will reap the fruit from the Spirit that leads to eternal life. This sowing mentality is one that is proven and has stood the test of time. Sowing into your marriage, sowing into your business, sowing into your kids, sowing into your own life is done naturally, but the one thing we have to learn to control is what are we sowing We must look to make heavenly investments in to the hearts and life of those around us, especially our family members who are nearest to us I am going to use this time to specifically focus on sowing money where the Lord would lead you. We live in a day where life is about dollars and cents and every penny counts. Especially after the bottom dropped out of the market, jobs were lost, hours were cut, savings were lost, 401 k's were ruined. It has been a very uncertain time financially SO this principle of sowing and reaping is one that has to be a go to resource during times like this. Our natural instinct would be to withdraw from tithing, withdraw from giving, or sowing and start storing, or holding on to. Believe me, I get it and have been guilty of it on many occasions. I have two little kids now and a wife and even though I have founded my life and lived my life on this principle I still am tempted to scrounge up what I got and hold on to it, but to watch it rot is way worse. Paul says this “Yes you are going to get burned out and weary at times sowing, but don't stop, don't give up for your harvest is sure and it is coming.” Did you hear that, “YES you are going to want to stop, and hold on to what you got, but don't you do it, for if you keep sowing, you will keep reaping and will reap a good Harvest.” As I said a couple of episodes ago, Brother Henry would always talk about sow, and reap, seed time and harvest, but he would always add in that Matthew 13 parable where Jesus says, “30, 60, 100 fold harvest.” What Henry would tell me was when you sow in faith, something the non-believers don't have access to for they only depend on the natural return of the sowing and reaping, but the believer relies on the supernatural return of the sowing and reaping because we do it by faith. I have many stories to tell about this principle but I will share this particular one at this time. In 2005 I went on a mission trip to Mexico with Pastor Rick Hagans which I will share with you later about how amazing the Lord set that up, but I met a guy that would become one of my best friends this life has known. Joel. Now Joel loves the word of God and I remember being a young pastor in Bible college sitting next to this guy from New York City who worked as a flight attendant and who sat next to me on our bus rides in and out of Mexico every day. He held a small NT bible and just kept showing me scripture and pouring into me and showing me this and that from the word of God and I remember sitting there thinking, this dude knows more about the word of God then I did at that point. So I made it a point to get me a little NT bible and get in and become a man of the WORD. Well on that trip Joel had mentioned that Times Square Church was doing a trip to Israel and he invited me to go with him. This was December 2005. I was like, yeah man, I will go. At that time you didn't need a passport to go across the border in Mexico and I had never flown on a airplane before but I was like, yeah I will go. Well, we had talked a couple of times via phone after that. I was the pastor in Two Egg and the Spring semester of 2006 had started and ended. I came back to Deland during the week to visit my mom and family and it was getting close to the end of May. It was a Wednesday night and I was in a church service at Calvary Christian Center where Pastor Jim Raley was preaching and in the middle of the sermon he said, “There is someone in here that had something that they thought was dead, but God has brought it back to life even tonight. I knew that was for me, I just knew it. I thought it was a relationship but was I wrong. I went out after the service and saw where I missed a call from Joel around that same time. I called him back and the first words out of his mouth, “You ready to go to Israel the first week of June?” This was the second to the last week of May. I said, yes, I know the Lord has put this together let me try to get my Passport. Remember I was a college student, serving as a pastor in Two Egg, which meant I had no money once so ever. I did however have enough to go to the clerk of court and pay for my passport to be expedited in 24 hours. That Sunday I told the Church in Two Egg that I felt like I had a once in a life time opportunity to go to Israel for a David Wilkerson pastors conference and a tour of the Holy Land. They were overwhelmed and said they would pay for my flight. I remember sitting there in that pew like, WOW, just WOW! I am really going to go to Israel. The next day I called Joel and told him. I ordered my passport and the Church has given me the money to pay for my flight. Hallelujah!!!! We were scheduled to fly out in one week. I rushed around that week as I prepared and I felt like I was on cloud 9 man. Blown away at this opportunity. As I traveled back up the Church on Friday to visit folks and preach I realized I only had $210 to my name and that should be my tithe. I knew I was flying out on Monday and I needed money to pay for rooms, food, gas, etc. but I could work that out with Joel and pay him back. I thought to myself, yeah, but you should keep that $210 so you can have money for getting something. For what felt like the entire 5 hour trip up to Two Egg I wrestled with the thought to keep the tithe or to sow it. Some people only tithe on what they earn, but over the years I made my mind up to calculate gifts toward the tithe or give an offering based on the gift. That week the Church gifted me a Flight to Israel and I was going to give an offering to the Lord on it and when it was all calculated it was about $180 and then my heart was to simply give Him all I had $210 because the $30 left over was not going to do me any good. So, I had settled it in my heart and prayed about it to the Lord. When Sunday came and the time for offering I was in tears as I said, “Lord here is my heart and my gift, thank You. I don't care if I go two weeks in Israel without eating, I am going and I am so thankful.” Well that was a sincere prayer, and a sincere seed. I preached and then gave the invitation. During the invitation people started walking up to offer me a gift from the Lord. I mean, check after check. It was so overwhelming. I just was in tears. It totaled over $1500 and for a young man who grew up in Deland and who only ever could dream about maybe one day going to New York City, the Lord used His principles in which He instilled inside of me, and His Church where He placed me, to show me “30, 60, 100 fold harvest is available for those who sow in faith and leave the results to Him.” Israel was breath taking, the pastors conference was powerful. When we came back I stopped in New York City to stay at my Friend Joel's house, and visit my friend Joey who was working at Times Square Church. I had always wanted to go to New York, but it was nothing compared to Israel. The Lord can do exceedingly, abundantly, more then you can think, ask or imagine. Sometimes He puts us in Divine set ups to test our faith to see if we will trust Him with all of our tomorrows. If you don't sow, you can't reap. Don't stop SOWING, FOR HE IS FAITHFUL!

I was enrolled in college, I was a youth pastor, I had been delivered of so many things and the Lord was daily growing me and teaching me.   Could you imagine the people I had worked with for years previously when I came back and was a totally different man. Unbelievable experience.   The Lord began to teach me so much. I really began to get deeper and deeper in the knowledge of the word of God and it was in this time that I truly learned how to hunger for God in His word and in Prayer. The Lord put me with the man that years earlier that would come up to me and tell me, God had a plan for me. This man Henry Rivera would begin to pour into me a passion and desire for more of God and to trust God and His word. FAITH!!   Matthew 13:3-9   “Then Jesus told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.”   The Sower- The Son of Man/Any one sowing the word of God The Seed- THE WORD OF GOD The Soil- The hearts of people, (PATH, ROCKY, AMONGST WEEDS AND THORNS, GOOD SOIL) The Supernatural- A great return on the harvest would be 10 fold, but here Jesus says that when the WORD of GOD lands on the heart prepared for it produces a supernatural crop, a supernatural return. 30 fold, 60 fold, 100 fold   My friend Henry would sit with me in the car at break time, at lunch time, before and after work and pour this verse in to me. He would really show me what it meant to sow the word of God in to peoples hearts for you never know what God is going to do. He would say, “BE LIKE JOHNNY APPLE SEED!   He kept saying this parable over and over again because the truth is God's word does not return void. God's word does produce supernatural results in the life of the one who have prepared their heart to receive it by faith. The problem is not in the seed, nor the sower but the ground in which it lands. This is the one and only area we can do something about.   The Apostle Paul says in 2 Timothy 1:12 “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day”    The Apostle Paul is saying, “To know JESUS is to TRUST HIM!” You have to know HIM! YOU HAVE TO KNOW HIM! FOR KNOWING JESUS IS TO TRUST HIM!   The Lord brought brother Henry into my life to sow the seed of salvation and then years later to sow the seed of faith and fire. You see after I surrendered my life I would felt called to go to new heights. Go to the Bible College, to do this and to do that, but it was all so far out of my league out of my level of comfort or normalcy. That time with brother Henry was a time of preparation. A time of getting a hunger to KNOW JESUS, and to KNOW HIM is to TRUST HIM!   One day during lunch we both had been fasting and praying and seeking the face of God. I mean the Lord was freshly pouring out in that car that day. All of a sudden Brother Henry looks at me and said, “God is going to enlarge your borders, He is going to bring you to places you never thought you would go, and He is going to use you to preach to the nations. A international ministry!”   I remember sitting there overwhelmed by the Lord's presence but feeling as though what Henry was saying was far from what I could ever accomplish. Some 17 years later here I sit, having preached in nations around the globe, having a International ministry where we serve as missionaries to the nation of Vietnam and train national pastors and leaders. What Henry saw that day was God's seed of purpose for me, what I had that day was a heart filled with good ground. Everyday of our life we have to hunger for Jesus, we have to thirst for His word and we have to know Him. For knowing Him is trusting Him! Trusting Him and His word brings a supernatural return. 30, 60, 100 fold.   Never in a million years would Brother Henry had known that the 18 year old, drop out, hung over addict, who was so angry, doing construction A/C duct work that he kept sowing the seed of the WORD of God in would become a Dr. in ministry, serving in a closed nation where generations will be impacted with Gospel message through that ministry.

Henry Winkler is a legend that doesn't need much of an introduction.  It's likely you first knew him as "The Fonze" on Happy Days... or maybe you're a big fan of his current Emmy-Award Winning portrayal of Acting Teacher Gene Cousineau on HBO's Barry, or his equally hysterical performance as Barry Zuckerkorn, the Bluth family attorney, on Arrested Development.  But you may not know that he's the co-author of 35 children's books and one of the producers on MacGyver, or that he had to get over his self-assessment, as a kid, that he was a "dumb" outsider because he was dyslexic.  Despite his stardom and stature, he is full of humility, generosity and a love for the craft of storytelling.  His story is full of resilience and tales of overcoming his own 10,000 "No"s.    SHOW NOTES:  Henry's love and appreciation of being able to "do the work", (8:22). Growing up in Manhattan with parents that he disliked for being "severe", (11:30). Henry's relationship to education, being dyslexic, and how it has led him and his writing partner to write a series of books all about an outsider, (14:49). Henry discussing the chameleon-like talent of our mutual friend, Sam Rockwell, (16:40). Being a late bloomer and realizing that making a strong choice as an actor opened his imagination and enabled him to fly, (18:02). From age 7, he wanted to be an actor with no plan B, which hurt him when Happy Days ended, (20:20). Getting into producing despite his fear of being "dumb" because of his dyslexia, (22:22). The doing of something, producing, is what made Henry aware of what he was good at, (26:04). The real work that must be done on one's self, (27:04). "If I change, will I be accepted?", (27:43). A disastrous night at Neil Simon's house, (29:04). A chance at redemption with Neil Simon years later and how he almost sabotaged it out of fear, (31:38). Going to college despite not walking with his high school class, mostly due to his parents' desire for him to go to college, (35:57). Forgetting his Shakespeare monologue at the big TCG auditions and making it up on the spot, (37:17). A valuable lesson about owning his unique gift from a Prima Ballerina, (42:42).  The experience of Barry on HBO, where Bill Hader and Aleck Berg allowed Henry to bring his qualities to a role they imagined quite different from him, (44:09). A comparison of my relationship to my role on Huge in France and Henry's relationship to his role as the Fonze, "it's you they want", (48:10). A lesson about telling himself "no" while playing Scrooge in 1979, (49:16). On Inside the Actor's Studio Henry realizes the role of the Actor in the world - to hold a mirror to society, (51:24). Working with a young Sylvester Stallone on 'Lords of Flatbush' and realizing he was in the presence of greatness, (55:54). “If you know in your center that you’re on the right path, that this is the right thing… ya gotta keep going.", (1:00:09). A story about a pilot called Monty that started out hysterical and then was ruined by attempting to make it politically correct, (1:04:30) Working as a producer on MacGuyver, (1:09:38). Co-authoring 35 books despite feeling like he never could because of his dyslexia, (1:11:27). What Henry says to himself to get out a funk - you have to figure it out, (1:12:37).  Henry's love of fly-fishing, (1:13:38).  Henry's experience on Barry "everything you want it to be", (1:15:37).  Henry's advice to his younger self, (1:17:50)    GUEST LINKS:  IMDb:  Henry Winkler  Wikipedia:  Henry Winkler  Henry's Books on Amazon: Hank Zipzer The World's Greatest Underachiever 10 Book Slipcase Collection  Variety:  Henry Winkler Wins First Emmy: 'I Wrote This (Speech) 43 Years Ago'    A DEEPER DIVE INTO 10,000 "No"s:  Support the Pod With Your 10,000 "No"s Apparel Purchase Here  Shop Thru Matt's Amazon Influencer Page (for items mentioned in interviews to support 10KNos at no extra cost to you.)  Inquire About Coaching With Matt    FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS AND PROMO VIDEOS OF WHO'S NEXT, FOLLOW:   Instagram:  @mattydel  Twitter:  @MatthewDelNegro  Facebook:  Matthew Del Negro Fan Site  LinkedIn:  @MatthewDelNegro  Email us feedback, guest suggestions or to be added to our MAILING LIST     RELATED PAST EPISODES OF 10,000 “No”s:  Ep 43:  Mark Duplass, Just Shoot It  Ep 53: Emmy-Award Winner Richard Schiff, of The West Wing & The Good Doctor  Ep 87: Erinn Hayes, How to Survive Being Killed Off a Sitcom Prematurely (by Scoring Lead Roles in TWO Netlfix Comedy Series)  Ep 118:  Actor Sarah Shahi, That Which Does Not Kill You Will Make You Stronger    If you like what you hear, please pass on the word. Sometimes, even the most gifted storytellers get stuck. If you have a story to tell, here’s a way to quickly get started. Structure your story using the SOAR method. Set the Scene: Tell us where you are, who you’re with, and your situation. Obstacle: What are you up against? What’s your goal? Every story begins with a world out of balance. Action: What did you do about the obstacle? If there is a problem, you take steps to solve the problem. Results: What was the outcome? Maybe you succeeded and reached your goal. Or perhaps you failed utterly. Or maybe you overcame that obstacle only to be confronted by the next hurdle. An Example of a Story Using SOAR A friend of mine recently told me a story. She might not have known it, but she was using SOAR. Set the Scene Because of the COVID-19 virus, school is canceled. It feels a little scary and uncertain. Our house is a little too small for the whole family under the best of circumstances. My oldest daughter, Jane, is in a dark mood. She’s old enough to understand just how bad this can all be. And yet, she’s stuck in the house, away from her friends. Henry and I are working from home. The only real workspace is our tiny kitchen table. Jane is sitting with us, trying to keep up with homework and her friends. There’s just not enough room, and things are getting tense. Obstacle Jane looks up from her laptop. “Holy crap.” “What?” Henry and I ask at the same time. “It’s Bill’s 90th birthday.” Bill is the neighbor that everyone looks to for help. If your sink is dripping, or you need someone to water your plants while you’re on vacation, Bill is the first to step up. The entire neighborhood loves him. Because he is right next door to us, my family is very close to him. But Jane is closest to him of all. He is her surrogate grandfather, confidant, and provider of small hard candies. He used to give her two pieces of candy and tell her, “One for now and one for later.” With the COVID-19 virus going around, we’re not going to host a party. And, just visiting with Bill at this point feels like it’s putting his life at risk. Action Jane comes up with an idea. What if we each write a birthday card and tape it to his window so that he can read it from inside? We scramble around the house, looking for birthday cards. Nothing. We take our laptops off the kitchen table and break out the construction paper and crayons. We each write heartfelt messages on brightly colored construction paper. When we finish, we show each other our handiwork. On Jane’s birthday card, there’s a brightly colored piece of candy taped to the corner. Beside it, she wrote a note. “One for later.” We find the tape and march over to Bill’s kitchen window, the one that looks toward our house. Jane taps on the window, and after a minute, Bill comes to the window and looks out. We all sing happy birthday, then one by one, we tape our birthday greetings to the window. Jane is last. Bill sees the piece of candy and loses it. We all lose it. We make our way home with hugs. Result As we reach the side door to our house, my cell phone rang. I thought it was going to be Bill. Instead, it was the neighbor across the street, Ramona. She asked me what we were doing, and I told her. I look at Jan and add, “It was Jane’s idea.” Ramona walked over to Bill’s house and took a picture. About five minutes later, I see that Ramona has posted the photo on Facebook and tagged Jane. Then, one family at a time, our neighbors walked over to Bill’s house and put up their cards. Pretty soon, the house is festooned with colorful paper on the windows. More neighbors tagged Jane on social media and thanked her for such a bright idea. Today, the world feels friendlier, and we don’t feel so alone. Do You Have a Story to Tell? This episode was originally published on April 5, 2018 as part of Blackbaud's previous Raise & Engage Podcast. In recent years we've seen the power of movements. Movements can create trends, bring people together in support of a common cause, and drive meaningful and significant change. But how do they happen? What gets a movement started, and then what causes it to grow and accelerate? Today's guest, Henry Timms, talks with host Steve MacLaughlin about these questions and more. As a co-founder of #GivingTuesday during his time as president and CEO of the 92nd Street Y and co-author with Jeremy Heimans of New Power: How Power Works in Our Hyperconnected World--and How to Make It Work for You, Henry is more than familiar with the powers that drive movements. Listen to the episode to hear what Henry has to say about new power and how it is shaping and affecting modern movements for social good. Topics Discussed in This Episode: The differences between old power and new power How movements like #GivingTuesday, the Ice Bucket Challenge, and #MeToo represent a fundamental change in the way that power is harnessed and used The importance of mobilization How new power is giving more people more agency to get involved in causes and make change Why people are more loyal to causes than to specific organizations and how that's disrupting old models of power What Henry thinks movements will look like and how they'll change over the next decade Which old power values are still important What can be learned from established movement-builders Links and Resources: Henry Timms New Power: How Power Works in Our Hyperconnected World--and How to Make It Work for You Article: New Power & Social Good: Thoughts from Jeremy Heimans Quotes:  “When you start to look at the world, you start to see these themes emerging, which is that the people who are coming out on top are the people who understand mobilization.” “We've all realized now that the assumptions of the 20th century - that if truth was on your side you'd come out on top - we know that's no longer true.” “The key to a movement is that it's only a movement if it moves without you.”
