Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2025 11:11

主播:Flora(中国)+ 梅莉(法国)音乐:All My Life今天我们要聊的是最近国外比较火的一个挑战——Ice Bucket Challenge (冰桶挑战)!The Ice Bucket Challenge first originated (开始于) in 2014. But it's 2025 now—that was over 10 years ago. The Ice Bucket Challenge comes back!01. Origin & Impact of the Challenge 冰桶挑战的起源和影响冰桶挑战赛于2014年风靡全球(a global viral campaign),这项活动旨在为罕见疾病渐冻症(ALS, a rare disease)筹集善款并提高公众认知( raise money and awareness)。 It gained massive participation, including celebrities (名人) like Bill Gates (比尔•盖茨) and Obama (奥巴马), and raised over $200 million—making it one of social media's most successful charity (慈善) movements. 02. Why Is It Back in 2025? Gen Z (refers to people born between 1997 and 2012) 也被称为digital natives (数字原住民) on TikTok has rediscovered (重新发现) the challenge. In the West, many viral challenges (走红挑战) start with a cause (某个目标) or a message. Whether it's awareness for a disease, body positivity (身体自信) things like that—这些有趣的活动背后通常都有一个最初的意图 (purpose). In China, there are viral challenges, too. But from what we've seen, they usually don't have a deeper purpose. People just do them for fun.In the West, once something becomes “just for fun” , people often criticize (批判) it. They'll say that you forgot the point (重点). But sometimes the internet just wants to laugh.中国网友(Chinese netizens)可能不会太在意它最初的意义,而是更享受“怎么把它玩得不一样(how to put a unique spin on it)”。 The original (原始的) challenge had a meaningful goal—raising awareness for ALS. But even now, if it brings people joy, that's still valuable in its own way. 04. Why Do These Trends Revive? The revival (再次流行) of the Ice Bucket Challenge shows that we miss a certain kind of internet—one that was more simple, joyful, and brings people together. And we miss those moments where it felt like the whole world was in on the same thing Even if it's not “pure (纯粹)”, it's still creating connection and still has social value. It's rare and special.挑战本身也在“evolve(进化)”中!Whether for charity or comedy, the Ice Bucket Challenge's revival shows how social media repurposes content (稍加改变内容) across generations. What is your favorite or most nostalgic internet challenge?

This week, I'm sharing my experience of taking on the Ice Bucket Challenge. You might remember this trend from 2014, which remarkably raised millions for ALS, known here in the UK as motor neuron disease. Now, in 2025, students at the University of South Carolina have revived it as the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge, with a vital new focus: to normalise conversations around mental health and raise crucial funds.  Inspired by this, and since braving the icy water myself, I wanted to use this platform to further amplify their important message.  This initiative resonates deeply with me because mental health is something that touches every single one of us. To think otherwise is like suggesting someone doesn't have physical health – we all do, and our mental well-being, with its own complexities, deserves equal awareness and proactive attention. While acknowledging the significant challenges of mental illness, just like physical health exists on a spectrum, fostering a greater understanding and open dialogue around our mental health can, I hope, lead to improved overall happiness and resilience. It's about recognizing that good mental health equips us all to better navigate life's inevitable ups and downs.Warning: I touch on the subject of death by suicide in this episode. Please reach out to a professional if this or any other element of the episode has triggered something that needs some external support. It's way too important not to. A few links that could be of use:www.samaritans.orgwww.mind.orgzerosuicidealliance.com/suicide-awareness-training Usual address for any thoughts, comments or observations damian@effectivechallenge.com.  Please let me know if you decide to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge 2025 yourself.

Find out what the world was searching for in April with Google Trends expert Charity Mhende. From the marathon craze sweeping New York to the viral return of the Ice Bucket Challenge and the unexpected surge in pickled foods. You can visit Trends.google.com for all of your search needsYou can like Google on Facebook at: Facebook.com/GoogleFollow Google on Twitter at: Twitter.com/Google http://masonverapaine.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/1.-Charity-Mhende-April-Google-Trends.mp3 Trends Transcription Announcer – 0:00: Mason Vera Paine. Mason Paine – 0:01: The month of April has come to an end and Google trends expert Charity Mende speaks about this past month's top trends. Thanks for joining me, Charity. Charity Mhende – 0:09: Thanks for having me. Mason Paine – 0:11: So tell me, month of April, what was all trending? Charity Mhende – 0:14: The month was super busy and of course, one of my favorite topics that's been trending is marathons. The past weekend in New York, people just ran the Brooklyn half. So we've seen a lot of interest in topics around sports. One of the top trending questions was, do people who run marathons know they don't have to? That was the top trending related question. And actually people were also searching for things like do people walk marathons? Do people run marathons without stopping? So it was all about the sports this past month. Mason Paine – 0:49: I'm curious, was there any particular shoe that was trending for marathons? I'm guessing you can't just use anything. Charity Mhende – 0:55: Well, people actually come to Google every day to search different topics and, you know, marathons and running was definitely one of them. But one of the interesting ones that was also coming up is gifting. People were searching for lots of different apparel related gifting searches in the run up to things like Mother's Day. So one of the things that I loved seeing was that people were searching for things like Mother's Day gift ideas, graduation gift ideas, and wedding present gift ideas all spiking by 5,000%. So I know I'm eyeing up some running shoes for my mom because she's out there trying to get her steps. Mason Paine – 1:33: In, you know, for my mom, I've kind of stopped trying to get her things because she gets her own things. And apparently she's a better shopper for herself than I am. And she always gets upset when I get her stuff. So I'm like, you know what I told my sister this year? We should just take her shopping and then we should go somewhere really fancy to eat afterwards. Right. Like making an experience. Charity Mhende – 1:57: That sounds like a great idea. And actually, you know, one of the things that I love about Google shopping is like, it makes shopping super easy. Specifically if your mom's looking for any deals or if you wanted to get her something for Mother's Day on a very specific budget, you can actually go on shopping.google.com and there is a personalized deal page that shows you different options that she might like, but also you might point her to it so she can make the shopping journey easy for herself. Mason Paine – 2:25: Absolutely. And also talking about spending money. Coachella. Coachella was in April. Was there any trends for that we. Charity Mhende – 2:32: Saw a lot of interest within the whole Coachella bracket. Specifically, it saw the highest search interest in the past month than it's ever been since 2018. People were also searching for Addison Rae, which rose by 650% after her surprise appearance. And her Coachella outfit was also a breakout search. Mason Paine – 2:54: I'm a little curious. Have you ever been to Coachella? Charity Mhende – 2:57: I unfortunately have not. The one Coachella that I should have gone to was the one that Beyonce went to because that looked like it was phenomenal. Mason Paine – 3:05: Isn't it always in hindsight? Like this year I was like, ah, you know,

In this laugh-out-loud episode, we're catching up post-Easter with surprise visits (hello, Sam!), presidential egg hunts, and the Pope making headlines. We dish on White House egg roll traditions, very expensive gluten-free veggie pizza, and a spray tan adventure that turned into a car wash crisis. We also got very real with an Ice Bucket Challenge comeback (cue the hate mail), debated the ethics of expiration dates, and launched a new campaign: Danna 's Toes for a Hot Tub (you just have to hear it to believe it). Plus, we expose the great teenage sunscreen fail, discuss the “Conclave” movie (stream it now), and question why kids are blurring their feet on TikTok. It's chaotic. It's hilarious. It's basically therapy. Come hang with your favorite farm moms—trust us, you don't want to miss this one. Listen now + laugh later. In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on March 7, 2025, your hosts spend a good long while talking about the various new stories to come out of Washington, D.C. this week. A trade war is on! But now it's off! Sort of, maybe! No one really knows! Also, President Donald Trump put on a real masterclass this week in reminding us all that he's a showman, not a career politician. That's a strength in some ways, but it's going to cause problems. They also agree that Canadians should probably start tuning him out a bit until he settles down, and that anyone who would seriously use the term "TDS" — yes, we see you in the comments — is, uh, dumb. (Matt uses stronger language in the podcast. Be warned.)This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Unsmoke Canada. Canada can be a global leader in reducing the harm caused by smoking, but it requires actionable steps, including giving adult smokers the information they need to choose potentially less harmful alternatives. Learn more at https://www.unsmoke.ca/They also touch on federal politics. Another pointless gun ban that no one takes seriously seems to be one of Justin Trudeau's last acts while in office, and sure. Why not go out the way you governed, with ever-more aspirational announcements that lead to nothing. Makes sense. We also do a quick chat about the upcoming Carney coronation, or not? And also gab a little bit about a New York Times report that added some fascinating colour to the behind-the-scenes talks between U.S. and Canadian officials. Matt also yells at his sump pump, if anyone is wondering what kind of a day he's having. This episode has also been brought to you by Forestry For The Future. Forestry supports 200,000 Canadians in hundreds of communities, generating $87 billion in annual revenues and $37 billion in exports — including $29 billion to the United States. It's also key to addressing some of our biggest challenges. We need an action plan for our forest sector and its employees, one that will help build the homes we need with Canadian wood, reduce the risk of wildfires and create more family-supporting jobs right here at home. To learn more about what forestry can do for Canada, visit https://www.forestryforthefuture.ca/After that, they wrap up with a quick chat about provincial politics and their continued efforts to monitor the Ice Bucket Challenge for National Survival. We still wish that list was longer! All that, and more, in the latest episode of The Line Podcast. As always, like and subscribe to our main page at https://www.readtheline.ca/

Jen also makes a comparison that'll piss everyone off. It turns out Doug Ford reminds her of ... Mark Carney. After that, they make a quick point about who speaks for Canada, and who doesn't, or won't. ALS, a nervous system disease, ruled the headlines in the summer of 2014 thanks to the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. How has our knowledge of the disorder evolved a decade later? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ‘Lou Gehrig's disease' (named after the iconic baseball player), is a progressive neurological disorder which breaks down a person's motor neurons. The main symptoms are muscle weakness and impaired physical function — mild, at first, but in the latter stages of the disease's progression, essential processes like breathing begin to fail. Most individuals face a life expectancy of two to five years. A small percentage live five to ten years. And an even tinier group survive beyond a decade. Most famously, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking survived more than 50 years past his diagnosis, in part due to the intensive care he was able to afford. In this episode of the ‘Your Brain On...' podcast, we discuss: • What ALS is, and how it affects the brain and the body • The onset and progression of ALS, from the earliest symptoms to the end-stage impacts • How ALS patients are diagnosed, treated, and cared for • Likely causes of ALS, including genetic predispositions and potential environmental risk factors • How new technologies are rapidly accelerating our understanding of ALS, especially in genetics Joining us for this installment of the show are two world-class experts on the disease: • Professor Ammar Al-Chalabi PhD, Professor of Neurology and Complex Disease Genetics at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College. • Merit Cudkowicz, Director of the Sean M.
