Jon said that when he first discovered the design operations community at the 2019 Design Ops Summit in Brooklyn, it felt like coming home. Here was this entire tribe of people who cared about the same things he'd been passionate about for years—creating systems that help designers do their best work. In this episode, I'm talking with Jon Fukuda, co-founder of Limina.co, about how design operations has evolved from an unnamed set of practices into a vital discipline that drives organizational excellence. As organizations continue to face economic pressures, the conversation around design operations has become more critical than ever. How do we demonstrate the strategic value of design teams? How can operational excellence serve not just designers but business outcomes? Jon shares insights from his 20+ year journey—from early days defining UX practice models to his current role as a design ops leader and community builder. This conversation reveals how the best design operations leaders think beyond tooling and process to focus on team health, cross-functional partnerships, and systems that elevate both human-centered practices and business innovation. Whether you're considering a move into design ops or looking to strengthen your design leadership approach, Jon's practical wisdom offers a roadmap for driving operational excellence in complex organizations. Questions you'll be able to answer after listening: How might we structure the first 30-60-90 days in a new design operations role for maximum impact? What key misconceptions about design operations could undermine your effectiveness as a leader? When should design ops be positioned under product teams versus operating as a horizontal function? Why do organizations often view design teams as expendable during economic downturns, and how can we change that perception? How can design operations leaders demonstrate their impact on both team health and business outcomes? About Jon Fukuda Jon Fukuda is co-founder of Limina.co with over 20 years of experience as a user experience specialist. With expertise in UX strategy, design thinking, and UI design, Jon has led teams through human-centered requirements gathering, strategy development, interaction design, testing, and evaluation. Most recently, Jon has dedicated his efforts to research and design operations facilitation for scalable, sustainable human-centered systems. We're back at it again entering the Tudor era. However instead of discussing women married to Henry VIII it's time to discuss the women unfortunate enough to be related to him. Margaret was Henry VIII older sister and a force to be reckoned with. As a young girl she was married to the king of Scot's and spent her entire life navigating bloody Scottish politics while annoying the hell out of her brother in the process. SummaryLast week we were in London for Photo Studio Operations put on by Henry Stewart. Creative Force sponsored the event and we used our speaking opportunity to record a live episode of the podcast. And we did, we totally did. Our guest Josie Diamond and I had a great conversation, we got some good questions from the audience. But somewhere between recording the session, and getting the files onto my computer, I lost them. Whether it was my fault or something errored with my travel recorder, I lost those recordings. Thankfully Josie was kind enough to take a few minutes to rerecord the session out in the hotel lobby. Do you believe in the power of building a happy workplace to grow your business? We definitely do, and this week we bring proof. This week's guest is an expert in creating joy at work, no matter how many days a week you're in the office. If you need some inspiration to build trust in your team and set the foundations for a happy culture, this is a must-listen for you. This week on The Melting Pot, we learned from a long-time friend, Henry Stewart, founder, and Chief Happiness Officer of Happy, a company that helps organisations create happy workplaces. Henry and Dominic met many years ago when their organisations were competing for the Unisys Service Excellence Awards. Happy is the second happiest company in the UK or Best Place to Work, as measured by the Great Places to Work organisation, and number 15 in Europe. Henry has an innovative approach to running a business and was part of the British pilot for 4-day work weeks. Then, he decided to continue on that path, which resulted in 40% year-over-year revenue growth and increased productivity. He also implemented a salary transparency system, made the staff set his salary, and decided not to make any decisions, after which his employees took ownership of raising prices during the pandemic, which ultimately saved the company. Henry is now exploring Employee Ownership Trust and is happily living out his 4-day work week. Download and listen to this fantastic conversation today. Ten years ago, Henry Stewart wrote The Happy Manifesto, outlining 10 principles for happier workplaces. Among them: Make your people feel good; Be open and transparent; Celebrate mistakes. This week on The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, Henry joins Gemma and Ross G the relevance of these principles in 2023. Spoiler: They're even more important. We discuss: how the workplace has evolved the emergence of ‘self-managing organisations' the factors that stop leaders creating a happy workplace. During the discussion, Henry recommended the following books: Turn the Ship Around! by David Marquet Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux Maverick by Ricardo Semler No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention by Reed Hastings and Erin Meyer He also mentioned the paper: Edmans, A. Trust - much aspired to within companies - starts at the top. The more you trust your team, the more of a trusting culture you will build.Henry Stewart, CEO of Happy Ltd, took that to a place very few would be willing to go.At pay review time for the company, he asked his team to decide what he should get. It's a logical conclusion if the whole ethos of your company is about building trust-based organisations. Which is what Happy is about. In this episode of the Karmic Capitalist, a natural pair with Richard Clarke's episode on building a company around happiness, we learn some complementary considerations. While Richard talked a lot about building psychological safety, Henry makes much of building trust. Neighbours. Or perhaps co-habitants!We talk a lot about devolving decisions (we're both fans of much in General Stanley McChrystal's "Team of Teams"), of stepping out of your team's way (also eloquently illustrated in David Marquet's "Turn the ship around") and of self-organising companies (as lived in Ricardo Semler's wonderful "Maverick").But this isn't a conversation about books or talk. It's a conversation about what Henry and Happy actually did, what their clients have actually done, and the practicality of creating a human and happy workplace. It's also a conversation about how that fuels company performance - in Happy's case, going from having lost 95% of their income when the pandemic kicked off, to recording the most profitable month in their 30+ year history. Finally, it's a conversation about passing up the opportunity to have bought happy.com as a domain when the internet was scarcely a thing! SummaryIn this episode Daniel discusses some take-aways and ideas following the Henry Stewart Photo Studio Ops Forum event that took place on October 5, 2021.Key Takeaways Put more focus on hiring the right team, then focus on retention. The idea that creative full time roles only stick around for 1-2 years doesn't HAVE to be reality, find ways to keep your team onboard. Employee turnover is waste, and training to backfill doesn't add valueWhen it comes to process and workflow, our physical space has an impact. Use something like a spaghetti map to review this. Unnecessary movements are also waste, and physical studio layouts should also employ lean ideas to improve workflow. We need to institutionalize our learnings from COVID. Business interruptions will happen again, whether its another pandemic or increasingly adverse weather due to climate change. Back in January 2016, Pim de Morree and Joost Minnaar quit their corporate jobs after their workplaces were too filled with too much inertia, bureaucracy and a lack of motivation. They started the blog Corporate Rebels and have been travelling the world to visit the most inspiring workplaces. I’m super excited to finally have Pim on the show as I’m a huge fan of their book, Corporate Rebels. As we know, hospitality doesn’t work in a linear way, so why do so many organise themselves in such a top-down way? I bring Pim on to the show to uncover the key principles of how to organise a truly successful business. Tune in as we discuss being a supportive leader, why tech projects often flop, and what businesses are doing to keep innovative – from nursing care homes to manufacturing plants. Today is the birthday of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley, who was the grandson of Margaret Tudor by her second husband, Archibald Douglas. While he had a claim to both the English and Scottish thrones, he is most remembered for being the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, and then being murdered, thus setting into play the chaos that led to Mary’s fleeing Scotland.
What is it that’s at the core of a truly happy workplace? This is a question I uncover with today’s guest, Henry Stewart, Chief Happiness Officer at Happy. Happy is an award winning Learning and Development organisation offering fun and engaging computer and management training. Happy's vision is outlined by Henry Stewart in his book, The Happy Manifesto. It outlines our 10 principles to create a happy, empowered workplace. It’s a book that has massively influenced the way I run my businesses, so I can’t wait to catch up with Henry. In this episode we explore the impacts of having a happy workplace. We discuss self-management, 33 ‘liberating structures’, being a good coach, how to overcome the challenge of ‘no going back’ – and why we need to be aware of hippos… Links: https://colossal-designer-2784.ck.page/40ada1483a (Join the Hospitality Mavericks newsletter): https://rb.gy/5rqyeq (https://rb.gy/5rqyeq) https://www.facebook.com/groups/hospitalitygamechangers (Join the GameChanger Facebook Group): https://www.facebook.com/groups/hospitalitygamechangers (https://bit.ly/2GAvr2W) https://www.happy.co.uk/ (Happy): https://www.happy.co.uk/ (https://www.happy.co.uk/) https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Manifesto-Organization-Great-Workplace/dp/0749467517 (‘The Happy Manifesto’ by Henry Stewart) https://uk.linkedin.com/in/henrystewart (Henry’s LinkedIn): https://uk.linkedin.com/in/henrystewart (https://uk.linkedin.com/in/henrystewart) https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/ (Project Aristotle): https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/ (https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/) https://www.buurtzorgnederland.com/ (Buurtzorg) https://www.amazon.com/Multipliers-Best-Leaders-Everyone-Smarter/dp/0061964395 (‘Multipliers’ by Liz Wisman): https://www.amazon.com/Multipliers-Best-Leaders-Everyone-Smarter/dp/0061964395 (https://www.amazon.com/Multipliers-Best-Leaders-Everyone-Smarter/dp/0061964395) https://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Rebels-Make-work-more/dp/9083004805/ (‘Corporate Rebels’ by Joost Minnaar and Pim de Morree): https://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Rebels-Make-work-more/dp/9083004805/ (https://www.amazon.com/Corporate-Rebels-Make-work-more/dp/9083004805/) https://www.amazon.com/Turn-Ship-Around-Turning-Followers/dp/1591846404/ (‘Turn the Ship Around!’ by David Marquet): https://www.amazon.com/Turn-Ship-Around-Turning-Followers/dp/1591846404/ (https://www.amazon.com/Turn-Ship-Around-Turning-Followers/dp/1591846404/) https://www.amazon.com/Good-Great-Some-Companies-Others/dp/0066620996/ (‘Good To Great’ by Jim Collins): https://www.amazon.com/Good-Great-Some-Companies-Others/dp/0066620996/ (https://www.amazon.com/Good-Great-Some-Companies-Others/dp/0066620996/) https://alexedmans.com/ (Alex Edmans): https://alexedmans.com/ (https://alexedmans.com/) https://www.happy.co.uk/leadership-and-personal-development/leadership-and-management-programmes/managing-change-positively/ (Managing Change Positively): https://www.happy.co.uk/leadership-and-personal-development/leadership-and-management-programmes/managing-change-positively/ (https://www.happy.co.uk/leadership-and-personal-development/leadership-and-management-programmes/managing-change-positively/) https://rework.withgoogle.com/guides/managers-identify-what-makes-a-great-manager/steps/learn-about-googles-manager-research/ (Determine what makes a great manager:) https://rework.withgoogle.com/guides/managers-identify-what-makes-a-great-manager/steps/learn-about-googles-manager-research/ (https://rework.withgoogle.com/guides/managers-identify-what-makes-a-great-manager/steps/learn-about-googles-manager-research/) https://www.hospitalitymavericks.com/podcast/episode/48014ed4/36-the-power-of-data-with-simon-blackbourne-commercial-director-of-tahola (#36: The Power Of Data With Simon Blackbourne, Commercial Director of Tahola):... Hosted by award-winning business coach, speaker and author, Sean Purcell, The Better Business Podcast is the show created to help small and medium business owners like you develop an entrepreneurial mindset, get clarity over your business direction, master the systems and processes needed to help you get ever more with ever less, and support you to create a business that can give you a better future. This week on the show, Sean Purcell welcomes Toby Freeman of The Robin Cancer Trust. The Robin Cancer Trust is the UK's only germ cell cancer awareness charity and was founded in 2012 by Toby and his family following the untimely death of his brother, Robin Freeman, aged just 24. Through attending events, using the power of social media and delivering awareness talks, Toby and his team raise awareness of testicular and ovarian cancers in young adults. Their dedicated campaigns highlight the importance of early detection, promote awareness of the signs and symptoms and tackle the ‘embarrassment factor' in young men and women. In the show, Toby discusses: How the passing of his brother Robin, led to the decision to create The Robin Cancer Trust How he juggled a career with setting up a charity How he felt and what he did when he and the trustees realised that he would need to make the jump and run the charity full time The challenges of being an education and awareness charity versus being a charity that directly provides support and services How the Coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown impacted upon the charity and their plans for resuming operations in the coming months The power of storytelling for charities, what SMEs can learn from getting in touch with their ‘why', and how they can communicate it to their market. In today's fast-paced business ecosystem that is sometimes described with cold, uncomfortable words such as 'concrete jungle', there is some irony in the fact that the hidden secret to business success is a rather simplistic one: happiness. In this episode, we meet Henry Stewart, Founder and Chief Happiness Officer of Happy Ltd. and Author of The Happy Manifesto. Henry views his work as rather simple: helping people create happy workplaces. My Favorite Quotes from Henry Stewart in this episode, (paraphrased):“The most important elements of leadership success are great communication, delegation, and time management“Life is Play, and Work is Play!”“Sometimes you must bring your parenting to Leadership development, and your leadership development, to parenting!”The best ways to connect with Henry Stewart online are:Website: https://www.happy.co.uk/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/henrystewart/About the PROFITABLE HAPPINESS™ Podcast:The Profitable Happiness™ Podcast features stories from highly successful happiness professionals, executive coaches, experts, and entrepreneurs. Henry Stewart (from Happy) and I talk about the future of work. We talk about the three fundamentals of what makes a happier workplace, as outlined by Daniel Pink’s book Drive: Mastery; Autonomy; Purpose. Mastery is about playing to your strengths – imagine spending most of your time doing something you love, and not having to do the things you really hate?! Managers should act as coaches, and be good as spotting talent and getting the most from employees. What if you could choose your own manager? Or do we really need managers at all? Autonomy is about providing clear guidelines and letting people get on with the job – when you have a choice and control over what you do and how you do it, you are happier at work. This requires a great deal of trust, a no-blame culture, the ability to learn from and celebrate mistakes. Henry Stewart is founder and Chief Happiness Officer of London-based training business Happy Ltd. Happy was rated one of the top 20 workplaces in the UK for 5 successive years and now helps other organisations create happy workplaces. Henry was listed in the Guru Radar of the Thinkers 50 list of the most influential business thinkers in the world. "He is one of the thinkers who we believe will shape the future of business", explained list compiler Stuart Crainer. His book, The Happy Manifesto, was published by Kogan Page in 2013 and short-listed for business book of the year. We find out in today's episode! And, in closing, we have a piece of advice for you: don't worry, be...

It's been a wee while since I've published an interview here on the blog. So, following on from the interview, Creating a great place to work is the best business investment decision you could ever make – Interview with Henry Stewart, that I did in early December, today I am excited to introduce you to Jo Causon, the CEO of the Institute of Customer Service, the independent, professional membership body for customer service. This interview makes up number seventeen in the series of interviews with business leaders in the ‘customer' space, leading authors, thought leaders and general all round good guys and gals, that I think that you will find interesting and helpful in growing your businesses. The rationale for the interview is that I reached out on Twitter to the Institute via Twitter and asked as I thought Jo would have a lot of interesting stuff to say. As my Mum always said: 'If you don't ask, you don't get'. Jo didn't disappoint.
