What's your damage? Welcome to one of the most impactful movies of our childhood. The subject matter was a little advanced for 10 year-olds, but hey we could handle it. In this episode we wonder- Are Corn Nuts a dignified last meal? Did Veronica really think the gun was loaded with blanks? Are popular people actually just bullies with a better wardrobe? Take a peek and find out! VHS Description- Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) has sacrificed everything in order to preserve her place in Westerburg High's most impenetrable social clique, the HEATHERS. As the only member of the group not named "Heather," Veronica has to work extra hard just to stay afloat. Going against her own morals and intelligence, Veronica succumbs to peer pressure on a daily basis, faking her delight in the humiliation of the school's less popular students. Bored of the frat parties and cow tipping so popular among her friends, Veronica's curiosity is peaked when a mysterious new guy named JD comes to town. The dark, brooding JD (Christian Slater at his best) observes Veronica among her pack in the lunchroom (where social hierarchy is most clearly displayed), concluding that Veronica is not a Heather at heart. When Veronica confides in JD that she hates her friends and wishes Heather #1 was dead, she never expects her words will have such dire consequences. Before she knows what's happening, JD is dragging Veronica on a killing spree staged as a teen suicide outbreak. But as Veronica soon learns, even death cannot stop the Heathers. As one Heather dies, her red scrunchee (the symbol of all power) gets passed on to the next Heather in line, and the clique that was the Heathers starts to feel like an inescapable social disease. How far will this war for popularity go? By far the darkest of teen comedies, HEATHERS invented a vocabulary of teen-speak all its own, asking questions like "What's your damage?" and introducing phrases like "How very." Director Michael Lehmann successfully blends the horror, comedy, and teen-movie genres, creating a truly original film. Full of dark humor and deeply sardonic messages, HEATHERS takes a fresh look at the often-sugarcoated cinematic world of high school.

A Sermon for the Third Sunday after Epiphany Romans 12:16-21 by William Klock   We live in the overlap of two ages and see it in the hostility of the world to Jesus and his people.  In his death and resurrection, Jesus has inaugurated a new age, a new world, and he’s given his people and the world hope.  He will make all things new.  But making all things new and setting God’s Creation to rights also means judgement and wiping away everything and everyone who stands against God and his world.  We see his graciousness and his patience on display in the fact that he sent his Son, not to bring an end to the story by crushing and wiping away ungodliness, but by sending him into the middle of the story, to die for the sake of his enemies, in order to make a means of redemption.  Jesus offers a way out of the coming judgement.  Jesus offers an opportunity to be part of his new creation.  We need only kneel in faith before him in acknowledgement that he is Creation’s true Lord.  In return, he makes his people and, in that, he forgives us and he makes us knew.  In our baptism his plunges us into his own Spirit and his Spirit then converts ungodly hearts set on rebellion, and places in them a love for God and a love for each other.  Jesus and the Spirit make us part of God’s new creation.  Jesus could have come to bring history to its end, but that would have been the end of us, too.  Instead, he’s inaugurated God’s new age, he’s inaugurated God’s new creation, and in this overlap—the new age inaugurated while the old age continues to trundle along—he sends his people out to proclaim his royal summons to the world, calling men and women to repentance, to faith, to take part in his new world. But the people and the powers and the institutions invested in the old age don’t like that.  Jesus warned his friends: “A disciple is not greater than his master.  If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.”  Persecution is bound to happen whenever and wherever the old age and the new age meet.  Paul knew this from personal experience.  In fact, Paul had found himself on both sides of the clash.  He knew what it was to be the persecutor and he knew what it was to be the persecuted.  He knew that it was in this meeting of the ages, this place where the world and the kingdom come up against each other straight on, that Jesus’ people find one of our greatest opportunities to be the people the Spirit has made us.  This clash is the place where Christians have profound opportunity to live the gospel and to be and to manifest God’s new creation here and now. You and I, as Western Christians, really know nothing of persecution.  Not first-hand.  We’ve read stories of brothers and sisters martyred for their faith in China or the Soviet Union or the Middle East, but we haven’t experienced real persecution ourselves.  We sometimes face opposition and hostility.  The older I get the more I think that an awful lot of the “opposition” we face here in North America isn’t so much for being Christians; it’s for being jerks about being Christians.  But that highlights what Paul is getting at in our Epistle today, in Romans 12:16-21.  We’re continuing in this passage that began with Paul telling us to present ourselves as living sacrifices to God.  To do that, he writes, is to worship the one who has saved us.  He went on to explain what that looks like in practical terms.  It begins with love and last Sunday we looked at his description of love at work in the Church.  How we live with and treat each other is a profound witness to the world.  In the Third Century, Tertullian wrote about the influence the Church had on the pagans around it.  They didn’t comment on what the Church taught or said, but on how the Church lived.  In the midst of a dog-eat-dog world, the pagans saw Christians and were astounded, saying, “Look how they love each other!”  Here in the Church we are a microcosm of God’s new creation.  But Jesus doesn’t intend for us to keep it to ourselves.  Just as God’s love spills out of us to each other, it then spills out of the Church to the world—and it often has its most profound impact when it comes up against opposition, hostility, and persecution.  In these verses, Paul now carries this theme of love as he leads us out of the doors of the church and back to our neighbourhoods, workplaces, governments, and communities. Paul knew this first-hand the impact of the love of Jesus can have when it comes up against the world.  What he writes here is not what he grew up with.  What he writes here is the opposite of what characterised the Jewish world he knew—not to mention the pagan world.  The Seventh Chapter of 2 Maccabees gives us an idea of the mindset that Paul was raised with.  We don’t have time to read the whole thing this morning, but the story takes place about 160 years before Jesus was born.  A group of Jews under the leadership of Mattathias Maccabeus and his son, Judas, rose up against their Greek rulers.  The Greeks tried to supress the faith of the Jews.  In 2 Maccabees 7 we read about a woman and her seven sons who were threatened with torture in an effort to force them to eat pork.  They refused and, one by one, the sons were brutally tortured and killed for their refusal to compromise.  Each, in turn, as he was tortured called down curses on those Greek soldiers and on Antiochus Epiphanes, the Greek king.  They became national heroes, not just for refusing to compromise and eat pork, but for having the courage to curse the soldiers as they were dying.  The men who rose up to violently overthrow the Greeks in the revolt that came were national heroes too.  (They still are.)  The Maccabees were the spiritual fathers of the Pharisees.  They were heroes to Paul and Paul saw his opposition to the Church as being faithful to that heritage. But something changed.  It might have begun as Paul stood by while Stephen, the first martyr, was stoned.  Stephen preached Jesus and the Jews killed him for it.  Paul held coats so that those throwing stones wouldn’t be encumbered.  And he heard Stephen with his dying breath cry out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60).  Just like Jesus, who was crucified, but did not curse or revile in return, but prayed, “Forgive them, for they know not what they are doing,” Stephen prayed for his enemies.  This was unheard of.  But, years later, here’s what Paul wrote in Romans 12—the end of our Epistle last week: Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.   Someone reviles you for your faith in Jesus.  Bless them.  Someone has your church’s tax-exempt status revoked because of your witness for Jesus.  Bless them.  You’re fined for refusing to compromise your faith as it relates to your business practices.  Bless them.  You’re arrested and put in jail for proclaiming the good news about Jesus.  Bless them.  Bless them.  Bless them.  Bless them.  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.  Is that a hard thing to do?  Of course it is.  But do it anyway.  If Stephen used his last breath to pray for the people who were stoning him, so can you.  And Stephen’s story reminds us of the key here.  Stephen had his sight fixed on Jesus and the Cross.  Brothers and Sisters, you can’t revile, curse, and fight back when you have your eyes fixed on the one who gave himself up as a sacrifice for the sins of his enemies and who preached, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).  Epiphany reminds us of the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah, as Lord, as Saviour.  You and I have experienced that manifestation and it changes everything. And it’s not just blessing the people who would persecute us for our faith.  We’re going to face hostility everywhere we turn in the world.  The old age is filled with sin and corruption.  Our interactions are tainted with it every day.  But instead of seeing this as an opportunity to get back or get even, as people of God’s new creation, we should look at our life in the midst of the world as a means of lifting the veil on the new creation that is our hope—and that Jesus and the Spirit have made us a part of already.  Look at verses 15-16: Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.   Never be wise in your own sight.   That means: Don’t be a sourpuss.  When something good happens to your pagan neighbour, be happy for him.  When he throws a party to celebrate something, go and celebrate with him.  Some people might get drunk in the process.  You can still celebrate with him, just don’t get drunk yourself and don’t be a nag.  When Veronica’s brother got married it was by a druid priestess with a druid-Wiccan ceremony.  We could have been sourpusses about it, but the fact is that marriage was instituted by God.  Marriage is a good thing—even when the pagans do it.  It’s what men and women are supposed to do.  It’s a joyful time.  We went.  We politely declined the smudging and stood outside the “sacred circle” drawn by the priestess and didn’t take part in the pagan rituals, but we could still rejoice with them in their marriage. The flip side of this is that we ought to weep with our neighbours or with the world when it weeps.  Some Christians are really, really good at Schadenfreude.  They sit and smirk every time something bad happens to unbelievers.  Brothers and Sisters, don’t be like that.  First, it’s self-righteous to be like that.  Bad things happen because we—all of us, every human being who has ever lived—have sinned and contributed to the corruption of our world.  Sometimes we suffer as the consequence of our own personal sins.  Most of the time we suffer the cumulative consequences of thousands and thousands of years of sins committed corporately by the entire human race.  The problems of this world can be laid at our feet too.  We’ve all contributed and none of us has any business gloating at the misfortune of a fellow human being.  But, second, you and I are privileged to be stewards of the answer to human suffering.  In Jesus and the Spirit, we’ve caught a glimpse of the world set to rights.  God, in his grace and mercy, saw fit to reach each of us with the good news about Jesus.  We ought to show that same grace and mercy to others who suffer.  Instead of gloating, we ought to take the good news about Jesus to them. In fact, even though the world around us is hostile to the good news, Paul says “live in harmony with one another.”  The Greek literally says, “thinking the same thing towards one another”.  The sense is that Paul is calling us to live alongside our neighbours, sharing life with them.  We Christians are prone to withdrawing from our neighbours.  We may not go off and form literal ghettos where we all live in the same place apart from everyone else, although there have been some groups who have done that.  No, our problem is that we tend to minimize our association with non-Christians.  That’s particularly true of those of us who have been raised in the Church.  We tend to form all of our close relationship with fellow Christians.  And then we wonder where all the opportunities for evangelism have gone!  It’s good to ask yourself—particularly if you’ve been a Christian for a long time—if you’ve isolated yourself from non-Christians. Paul says not to be snobs, but to associate with the lowly.  We see this lived out very dramatically in the Church of Paul’s day as slaves and free people lived alongside each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.  Paul, no doubt, had in mind the tensions between Jewish and Gentile Christians in the Roman churches.  Those may not be the sorts of division we’re prone to being snobbish about, but they make the point that the love of Jesus that has been poured into our hearts by the Spirit crosses boundaries of every kind. Now look at verses 17 and 18: Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.  If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.   Responding in kind is the way of the fallen human heart.  It’s our most natural response.  But the Christian is different.  Again, the Spirit has removed our hearts of stone and in their places filled us with love for God and love for our neighbours.  This is the most basic and fundamental characteristics of the Christian, which is why Paul beats this drum so often—he says almost exactly the same thing in 1Thessalonians 5.  Love does not seek revenge.  Love seeks the best, even for our enemies.  If you struggle with this—and we all do—remember, again, the cross.  We rejected God.  We sinned.  We sundered heaven and earth.  We corrupted God’s creation.  But instead of repaying our evil with more evil, God sent his Son to forgive, to reconcile, and to restore. Why?  Because he loves us.  Think on the cross.  Meditate on the cross.  Keep the cross always at the centre of your vision and love will become easier and more natural. And because of love and our desire to live out the good news and to manifest God’s new age in the midst of the world, we’ll always be thinking about how to do good.  Paul knew that sometimes doing good and manifesting the kingdom will bring the scorn of the world.  It took Jesus to the cross.  But he also knew that it’s possible to live at peace with our neighbours.  There are times when our integrity and refusal to compromise may lose us friends or get us fired from our jobs, but we can still rejoice with our joyful neighbours and weep with our weeping neighbours. What comes to my mind as I read these words is that Paul understands that we will face the opposition of the world, but we should respond to that by being squeaky-clean.  We should be living in such a way that when we do face opposition or persecution, it should truly be for the sake of Jesus and only for the sake of Jesus.  I think this is something we modern Christians need desperately to hear.  We can be real jerks sometimes, all in the name of Jesus.  We can be horrible snobs in the name of Jesus.  We can be terrible sourpusses in the name of Jesus.  We often gloat at the sufferings of unbelievers—particularly those who actively oppose us—and we gloat in the name of Jesus.  We can be horrible, self-righteous hypocrites in the name of Jesus.  And we too often seek our own welfare—often doing so in the name of Jesus—through associations with ungodliness and ungodly people.  Politics, in particular, has corrupted our gospel perspective and compromised our witness.  And politics, too, has caused us to forget Jesus’ warnings about violence and retaliation.  We may never dream of taking up swords against our enemies, but we invest ourselves in winning control of the government so that we can turn its sword against our enemies.  We must make every effort to live for the sake of others, following the example of Jesus, and seeking to show the love of God to all. It’s become pretty common for some people to compare Christians to Nazis because of our stance on sexuality, sexual identity, and marriage—hot topics at the centre of today’s cultural revolution.  We’re seen by many as bigots and haters.  Brothers and Sisters, our refusal to compromise will bring this sort of opposition, but we need to be sure that the opposition is truly for the sake of our commitment to Jesus and to the real love that Paul describes here.  If the world is going to call us Nazis, we need to be squeaky-clean.  We need to be the most loving people on the planet—as we should be—even if the world doesn’t fully understand true love.  The people who are going to call us Nazis on this issue, need to see us rejoice with those who rejoice, weeping with those who weep.  They should never see us thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought.  To the contrary, they should see us seeking out the lowly.  They should know, even if they’ve suppressed it in the backs of their minds and seared their own consciences, that their accusations are utterly false. Brothers and Sisters, Paul gives us a sombre warning in verse 19: Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”   This isn’t always an easy thing to do, but, again, look to the cross.  God’s people are loved by God.  That God would give his Son for our sake is the proof.  We’re Christians because we trust in God—in his goodness and his wisdom seen first and foremost in his provision for forgiveness and renewal through Jesus.  Brothers and Sisters, we know that God is good.  We know that God takes care of us.  We know that God will set all things to rights in the end and that his justice will prevail.  We don’t need to take justice into our own hands by seeking vengeance.  To do that is to perpetuate the very cycle of evil that Jesus died to end.  Have you ever considered that your faith is witnessed to others when you choose to trust in God to deal with your enemies?  Think on that the next time you’re tempted to repay evil with evil. Then in verses 20-21 Paul writes,   To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.   Instead of cursing our enemies, we need to devote ourselves, as Jesus said, to praying for our enemies and seeking out ways to do good to those who persecute us.  Paul quotes Proverbs 25:21-22.  Don’t just leave it at not taking vengeance on your enemies.  Look for ways to actively do good to him or to her.  This goes along with being squeaky-clean.  Manifest the love of God to your enemy.  There’s some disagreement about exactly what Paul means by heaping coals on his head, but Paul’s point seems to be this:  First, doing good to your enemies is the right thing to do, because it models the love that God has shown us in Jesus.  Never forget that we were once God’s enemies.  Second, vengeance is God’s prerogative and we need to trust in him in these situations.  And, finally third, Paul’s thinking that—even if it’s a long-shot—loving our enemies may bring them to repentance.  That may seem a stretch, but Paul knew this first-hand.  Remember Stephen.  Paul stood there holding coats for the stone-throwers.  He heard Stephen’s prayers for his enemies.  Paul didn’t change his mind about Jesus that day, but Stephen’s witness stayed with him and was part of a long sequence of events that would eventually bring Paul to Jesus. Paul really knew how evil is overcome, not with more evil, but with good.  He’d seen it in his own experience.  But he understood it, first and foremost, because of the cross of Jesus.  Paul understood the way in which violence compounds violence and evil compounds evil just as we do.  Someone hits you so you hit back harder and the violence spirals.  It’s in our fallen nature and has been from the beginning.  In Genesis 4 we’re told of Lamech who boasted that a man hit him so he retaliated by murdering the man and the world has been spiralling into greater violence ever since.  Evil only begets more evil. Brothers and Sisters, Jesus stepped into history to break that cycle.  Evil concentrated itself in one place, rose up to its full height, and did its worst at the cross.  Peter drew his sword, but Jesus knew that evil begets evil, that those who live by the sword die by the sword.  Jesus told Peter to put his sword away and then allowed himself to be led to the cross.  Jesus let evil do its worst and in doing so, he broke the cycle.  He returned death with life and evil with love.  And now he’s filled us with that same love and calls us to break the cycle wherever we find ourselves in it.  It’s not a question of if, but when.  The spiral of evil and violence finds us every day, even if only in small ways.  How do we respond?  Brothers and Sisters, think on that.  Focus your eyes on Jesus and his cross and meditate on his love. Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities; and in all our dangers and necessities stretch out your right hand to help and defend us, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

I have to admit to being a bit bouncy right now. It happens every year around this time. It’s as if I emerge from the doldrums of late summer with a renewed sense of purpose and, yes, even optimism. The change of the calendar from August to September is exciting for me. I always anticipate good things for September and October. E and I were married in September—and yes, I haven’t forgotten our anniversary. There is a change in the quality of the light, weather is a bit crisper and that optimism for a better future always seems to move in. Now I know this might sound ludicrous in the face of everything going on. I know if you are a parent of school age or college age children or a student yourself you might feel very little reason for excitement as most of you are starting school virtually and not getting to do the normal things of school. I’m sorry about this as the start of school is always a benchmark in our lives. but if you can just fuel even a tiny spark of positivity it might help you feel at least a little better. Speaking of optimism, today’s guest, Veronica Aimee Centeno-Cruz, is a study in optimism. Veronica was in the 2018 documentary film Me, the Other, which centers around the marginalization of people because of their backgrounds, heritage, or lifestyle. The film, which was produced and shown extensively locally, displays the challenges of 12 people who don’t feel to be a part of “normal” life. Veronica, for example, who is Puerto Rican, grew up with her single mom in Ypsilanti, Michigan because her biological father decided when Veronica was little not to participate in the household. As she talks about in our conversation, Veronica became a de facto a parent in her home. Her mom, Aimee, was in and out of hospitals throughout Veronica’s childhood. In fact by the time she appeared in Me the Other, Veronica’s mom had had three liver transplants. So even at the tender ages of 5, 6, 7 Veronica was looking after her mom, ensuring her medications were lined up, her mom was comfortable and even helped to prepare meals when her mom was too sick or tired to cook. This forced Veronica to grow up quickly. When Veronica’s mom met a man and remarried, things weren’t perfect. Sham, her mom’s husband, took to Veronica right away and became her dad. You can hear Veronica’s pride and joy talking about Sham and belting out songs while he jammed on the drums. But that turned dark for Veronica as Sham was in and out of prison and was killed just as she started filming the documentary. Inspired by her mom's health issues, Veronica is now a student in Occupational Therapy at Eastern Michigan University. She carries a kind of grace, a humility, a gratitude and yes, even a sense of optimism for life despite her challenges. To hear Veronica talk about this gratitude in our conversation is inspiring and I hope you feel it too. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Veronica Aimee Centeno-Cruz. Jughead is inspired to use the idea as the basis of a story he has to write to get acceptance to attend the University of Iowa. Reggie says that they should all pull a prank on Honey that will be talked about for years. The next day when Honey arrives in his office he sits down in chair and is stuck to it. His phone has also been covered in glue as well and he needs the fire department to take him away to get him unstuck. Honey then announces that unless the people behind the prank step forward Prom will be cancelled. Betty researches Honey and finds out that he has cancelled prom at every school he’s worked at. The solution here? Get everyone’s parents to come to the school and convince Honey to let prom continue. The parents are successful and prom is back on until Honey calls Charles, Jughead and Betty to his office to show them a videotape left at the school. The tape shows someone recording the empty halls of Riverdale. Honey says that this could be the work of whoever is making the video tapes and to keep the students safe prom must be cancelled. Smelling something fishy, Betty and Jughead watch the tape later and Betty sees a couple frames that show Honey in a reflection and that he is the one that made the tape. Honey is fired from Riverdale high but he tells Betty, Jughead, Archie, Veronica and the rest of the gang that he figured something like this would happen and he already has been hired at Stonewall Prep who have cleaned house after everything that happened with Jughead. While they gang basks in their success, the Principals assistant, Ms. Bell, tells the students how much Honey did to help the school and the students. During these events, Jughead has been writing his story which has the gang kidnapping Honey, taking him up to a cabin, maple boarding him and trying to get him to leave town. When Honey refuses they all step out of the cabin to figure out then next move. When Veronica and Archie return they find Honey dead. The gang buries the body and tries to continue on with life. Reggie starts to crack from guilt and almost tells a couple members of the football team. The rest of the gang cut Reggie’s brakes on his car and he is killed in a crash. The story is escalating as people begin to turn on each other to make sure the secrets remains hidden. Jughead was enjoying writing this story until Ms. Ball gives him a letter that Honey wanted her to mail to the University of Iowa. After Jughead reads it he realizes that he has become sucked into the darker elements of Riverdale and doesn’t want to be like that so he changes his story to Honey living and the gang dealing with the consequences of their actions. Ray Hoffman introduces his guest Veronica Dagher in the form of a note: “I like your work, Veronica Dagher. I like your Wall Street Journal columns on successful women, your Secrets of Wealthy Women podcasts, as well as your new ebook based on the columns and podcasts. It’s called Resilience, and it offers a lot of lessons in life. And, take it from me, not just lessons for other women. And you and I would both agree, the timing is perfect for the column, the podcast, and the book.”Listen in for fascinating stories of women overcoming challenges.   Key Takeaways: [:20] Ray Hoffman introduces Veronica Dagher. [:53] Veronica says there is a current wealth transfer of about $33 trillion from one generation to the next in America. Women will inherit a lot of that money. Veronica shares stories about wealth, success, and entrepreneurship, featuring some very well-known women in her Wall Street Journal columns and podcasts. [1:10] Maria Sharapova, Josie Natori, and Rebecca Minkoff are a few of the subjects of these stories about how they built their successes and the obstacles they overcame. The book Resilience came after the columns and podcasts. [1:33] All the women in the book Resilience have overcome obstacles such as bankruptcies, difficult divorces, loss of a child, or business difficulties. Some faced people telling them they would never be successful. They didn’t listen to those voices. When they were knocked down, they just got up faster than other folks. [2:31] Veronica’s optimism and faith come from her family background and personal experiences of overcoming the devastating loss of her father and still pushing on. Her mother instilled in her from a young age the desire to be a financially independent woman while relying on people she trusts among family, faith community, and friends. [3:37] Veronica took leave for four months when her mother grew suddenly very sick. Veronica watched her mother face illness and unanswered medical questions, and come back to good health. This experience helped Veronica to grow tougher and more assertive. [4:20] When Veronica’s father passed, they were able to keep the house and lifestyle, with very careful management of their resources. The constant conflict between how her mother managed the budget and how her father had regarded money more casually informs Veronica’s work today in her attention to family dynamics. [5:41] Veronica studied finance in school, with no thought of journalism as a career. It seemed to be a solid choice, given her family background. [6:53] The subjects of Resilience range in age from Ayesha Curry, 29 when interviewed, to Mary Higgins Clark, “90-something.” Veronica shares her ideas on how their age demographic affected the choices of the women interviewed. [7:44] The “entrepreneurial gene” is not found just in America. Josie Natori came to America from the Philippines and is very proud to be an American. The Natori Company is known around the world. She has the attitude that as a woman it is okay to be successful. It’s okay to believe that anything is possible. Don’t limit yourself. [10:03] The Philippines has a huge matriarchal, entrepreneurial culture. Josie Natori was a working mom from the beginning. Josie and her husband worked together and had an agreement that their marriage and family would take precedence over the company. They’ve been married for over 50 years. Their son is taking a big role, now. [11:37] At age 91, Mary Higgins Clark, the Queen of Suspense, is amazing. Veronica taped the podcast with her in the Clark home in New Jersey, and Mary told Veronica she had enjoyed the process immensely. [12:01] Mary Higgins Clark did not have an easy life. Her father had died when she was young. Her first husband died suddenly when she was in her thirties with five children to raise. Her short stories, a popular form of the day, were rejected “something like 50 times.” Editors told her she would never be successful. She didn’t give up. [12:37] Mary Higgins Clark eventually became a best-selling novelist — one of the highest-paid women and highest-paid novelists in U.S. history. She stays very humble. [12:57] Mary Higgins Clark and Veronica Dagher are both Fordham graduates. They had met at a Fordham event several years ago and Veronica had asked Mary for writing advice. Mary shared that at one point the family was almost on food stamps. She needed to write for money. Obviously, that worked out. [13:46] When Mary Higgins Clark had first submitted a short story to Cosmopolitan Magazine, an editor called it light and trite. Years later, a Cosmopolitan editor called asking for her to write something for them and Mary told her agent, “Tell them yes but make them pay.” [14:14] When Veronica started the podcast, she wrote names of women to interview. Oprah topped the list, but that one hasn’t happened yet. Maria Bartiromo was taped “today.” Maria Sharapova was on in the fall. Bobbi Brown was another name on the list. [14:58] Using a Google Docs spreadsheet, Veronica had put together her list of dream people for the podcast and the people she knew who could connect her to them. She did a lot of pitching people trying to make connections and attended a lot of events to introduce herself to people. [15:36] Veronica is still going to events, tracking people down and trying to meet them but now she is getting a lot of high-quality incoming pitches from big names. [16:00] The common thread between the millennial entrepreneurs and the older entrepreneurs is the resilience. The younger entrepreneurs see opportunity everywhere. They are not limiting themselves to one sector or area of business. For example, Ayesha Curry is into cookware, media, and other ventures. She leveraged her network. [17:49] Ayesha Curry faced the criticism of having opportunities through her husband. Other women Veronica interviewed also faced criticism because of the advantages of their family circumstances. Yes, certain doors were opened, but they had to walk through the doors, to follow up, and to build the companies and brands they have. [18:41] Loreen Arbus is the daughter of the founder of ABC. She is a philanthropist, a programming executive, and she has her own production company. She does so much, and she didn’t have to do any of it for the money. She works for the sake of work. [19:13] The first daughter of Loreen’s father, Leonard Goldenson was born with cerebral palsy. In those days, the family was turned away from hotels and restaurants because of her disability. This was an important influence in Loreen’s advocacy for people with disabilities. Loreen helps people with disabilities to become successful in media. [20:09] Loreen deliberately changed her last name as a young teenager to avoid riding on her father’s coattails. Veronica was at a party at Loreen’s NYC apartment recently and it is incredible in its decoration and style. Loreen is not afraid to take risks. [20:55] Barbara Bradley Baekgaard of Vera Bradley told Veronica she wasn’t very good at math and didn’t have an MBA, but she and her friend had an idea for cute luggage. They borrowed $500 from their husbands, bought some fabric, and hired some people to sew the bags. They knew nothing of marketing or finance. [21:50] They learned everything they needed from SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), which is a huge resource for entrepreneurs who want to learn. [22:14] An unexpected lesson for Veronica in her interviewing came from Bonnie St. John, an Olympic athlete with a disability, who had suffered childhood abuse. Bonnie said that, as a child, you have a lot of people around you who push you. Her success, as an adult, has been from seeking out people who helped push her to the next level. [23:17] Veronica thinks that lesson, to seek out people who are going to challenge you and push you to the next level, is really important for entrepreneurs and for women in business. [23:31] Many of the interviews in Resilience touch on work-life balance and being a working mother. Katia Beauchamp, co-founder of Birchbox told Veronica the whole idea of work-life balance is a myth. You’re never going to feel fully in balance. The best scenario is that you love what you do at work and you love your home life. [24:11] Katia Beauchamp told Veronica that there are certain times when a mother is going to have to focus on her career more than on her home life. As a mom, you don’t have to be perfect all the time. No one is perfect. Just do your best and focus on the good that you are doing and the things you are doing right. [24:44] Kate White would leave her office at Cosmopolitan at 5:00 p.m. and have the babysitter make dinner while she spent time with her children. After dinner and more time with the children, she went back to her office. [25:01] Veronica knows a lot of women today who are logging back on after they put the children to bed. It’s not the ideal situation, but there are times when the work has to get done. It’s a way to work things out. Hopefully, the boss understands that you need to leave sometimes at 5:00 for the soccer game or whatever. [25:40] Veronica has learned not to be afraid to ask for what you want. The stories in her interviews have reinforced that principle for her. It’s not always easy to tell people what your expectations are. There is a way to do it that suits you as a person, even if there is pushback. You’re never going to get what you don’t ask for. [26:31] Next for Veronica is a video series, more on Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, a lot more of the Secrets of Wealthy Women podcasts, and hopefully, branching out into more stories on women in finance and the workplace. Tim & Bob return with their usual shenanegans.  Leave us a nice review on iTunes, would you please?  After being shot, Fred is rushed to the hospital by Archie, who is soon joined by his friends. Sheriff Keller gains a description of the shooter from Archie and calls him in for a lineup, but none of the men in the lineup are the shooter. When Veronica searches Fred's belongings, Archie sees that his wallet is missing. Betty and Jughead visit Pop's to look for the wallet but find nothing; instead, they learn from Pop that the shooter did not take any money from the register, meaning that it was actually a hit against Fred. Jughead asks the Southside Serpents to investigate the shooting, but to no avail. Grace Dent tells the story of a white-collar-criminal's pregnant fiancée, trying to organise their prison wedding. When Veronica's partner - a successful businessman - was sent to prison for what is sometimes called a 'white-collar crime', she was pregnant with his child. On her first visit to him behind bars, he proposed. At a time of such uncertainty the prospect of marriage was something that kept them united. But they want the marriage to take place before the birth of the baby - just 9 weeks away. And they're not even sure if it's possible to get married in a prison at all. Producer: Georgia Catt.
