The conversation explores the complex and often divisive issue of capital punishment from a biblical perspective. The guys acknowledge the spectrum of Christian views, noting that while some support the death penalty as a form of justice, others question its place in a flawed system. Scripture like Genesis 9:6 and Romans 13:1–4 is examined, with emphasis on honoring the image of God in every person. They weigh the balance of justice and mercy, discussing the importance of accountability while also considering the value of repentance and the potential for redemption. Ultimately, the conversation encourages Christians to approach this issue with humility, careful study of Scripture, and grace for those who land on different conclusions.Send us a textThanks for listening! Christians generally know that God created “the heavens and the earth” and made human beings in His image. They know that “the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof”—He owns His creations. They know that skilled people create and own marvelous works. But a disconnect often occurs when it comes to God’s communicable attributes of creativity and ownership and that combination’s role in human innovation, technological progress, and practical benefits from human creativity and ownership. Jim Edwards will join us to connect the dots between creativity and ownership, as well as the dots between that combination and the fruits of human flourishing.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” Matthew 5:17–18The law and the prophets, as found in the Old Testament, consists of three types. First, there are the moral laws, such as the Ten Commandments, that are primarily based on the natural law of God. By “natural law,” we mean that our human reason can understand their truthfulness, such as with “Thou shall not kill, steal, etc.” Second, there were many liturgical precepts that were laid down and practiced as a preparation for and prefiguration of their ultimate liturgical fulfillment. The fulfillment is now found in the sacramental life of the Church. Third, there were various legal precepts that gave specific directions on daily living. These laws include instructions on food, relations with others, how to treat foreigners, cleansings, purifications of utensils, tithing, and much more. In our Gospel today, Jesus essentially says two things. First, regarding the legal and liturgical precepts, He says that He came to “fulfill” them. Thus, Christians are no longer bound by these Old Testament legal and liturgical laws, in that we are now called to a much higher fulfillment of them all. But as for the moral laws, especially those found in the Ten Commandments, not a single precept taught is abolished. Instead, these Commandments are deepened, and the call to moral perfection is now much clearer. It is for this reason that Jesus goes on to say, “Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” It's important to understand that those who lived before the time of Christ were not held to the same standard as we are today. That's because they did not enjoy the gift of grace that was won by the Cross and is bestowed by the Holy Spirit. Today, we have so much more and, for that reason, are called to a much greater life of holiness. For example, we no longer celebrate the Passover as a mere remembrance of what God did by setting the Israelites free from slavery to the Egyptians. Today, we celebrate the New Passover through our participation in the Holy Eucharist, and our “remembrance” goes beyond the simple recalling of a memory of old. Our remembrance is one that enables us to actually participate in the saving sacrifice of Christ. We share in the actual event and are partakers of the grace won on the Cross each time we celebrate the Holy Mass. And as for the moral laws of the Old Testament, they become the bottom line of morality. The upper limit is now much higher. We are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. We are to lay down our lives for others and take up our crosses daily to follow Jesus. We are called to the perfection of sacrificial love, and that is only possible by our sharing in the very life, death and resurrection of Christ our Lord. Reflect, today, upon the very high calling you have been given by our Lord. It's not enough to simply do the bare minimum in our worship and moral life. Doing so may permit you to be “least in the Kingdom of heaven,” but God wants you to share in His greatness. He calls you to be among the “greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.” Do you understand your high calling? Do you have the perfection of holiness as your goal? Commit yourself to the full participation in the New Law of Christ and you will be eternally grateful that you did. My most glorious Lord, You came to bring our lives to the fullness of grace and holiness. You call us to the heights of Heaven. Help me to see my high calling, dear Lord, and to work diligently to embrace all that You now command by Your New Law of grace and mercy. Jesus, I trust in You. The principal focus of this podcast episode revolves around the contentious issue of whether Christians should financially support organizations that may be deemed heretical through normal commerce. We engage in a profound exploration of the implications of patronizing entities such as Angel Studios, which is affiliated with Mormonism, and how this intersects with the consumption of music produced by groups like Bethel or Hillsong, known for their controversial theological positions. Throughout our discussion, we emphasize the necessity of approaching these matters with discernment and a clear understanding of the potential theological ramifications of our choices. We also reflect on the broader cultural context in which Christians navigate these decisions, considering the challenges of living in a world where nearly all forms of entertainment and media may inadvertently support contrary beliefs. Ultimately, we aim to equip our listeners with a framework for making informed decisions that align with their faith and convictions.Takeaways: The Christian podcast community engages in theological discussions with an emphasis on love and charity, despite differing beliefs. The central topic of the episode revolves around whether Christians should support potentially heretical organizations through commerce. Angel Studios, which is Mormon-affiliated, raises the question of whether Christians should financially support their films and music. There is a tension between enjoying content produced by heretical groups and the potential consequences of endorsing their teachings. Critical thinking is essential when consuming media; discerning the theological implications of songs and movies is important. Music from organizations like Bethel or Hillsong, while popular, may carry problematic theological messages that warrant caution in church settings.
Today I share some thoughts on David Lipscomb's use of Scripture in his classic work titled Civil Government: Its Origin, Mission, and Destiny, and the Christian's Relation to It. Although this book is well over a hundred years old, it is surprisingly relevant today as Christians wrestle with how to understand the Bible and how to apply it.
Have you ever poured your heart out in faith—believing, praying, stepping out and yet... nothing seemed to happen? It's one of the most discouraging experiences we face as Christians. But what if something is actually happening, even when you can't see it? In this episode, I share a powerful key the Lord gave me after years of coaching believers through this exact frustration. You'll discover the peace that comes when you shift from results to relationship, and how hearing God—even without seeing results—can change everything. As always,
The Honest Broker's Humanities Course shifts to the Middle East and Persia, exploring the Quran (circa 800 A.D.) and the 13th-century poet Rumi, before returning to Rome next week. The reading, kept under 250 pages, includes 14 of the Quran's 114 surahs (1-5, 12, 17, 18, 32, 36, 55, 67, 103, 112) and self-selected Rumi poems. New to both texts, I approached them with curiosity, trusting the curator's selection after prior Bible readings, but found the experience underwhelming. The Quran portrays Allah as focused on division between believers and unbelievers, with frequent mentions of hell for those lacking faith. Submission to Allah's will is paramount, and praying toward Mecca symbolizes spiritual alignment and community unity. The text excludes Jews from Abraham's promise if they do wrong, though some verses suggest salvation for believers, possibly including Jews and Christians. Jesus is depicted as a prophet, not divine, contrasting Christian beliefs. Allah seems to emphasize punishing unbelievers, with hell referenced often, and fasting is highlighted as a path to righteousness, noted during Ramadan.Familiar Biblical stories—Cain and Abel, Joseph, Moses—appear but differ from their older Genesis versions. Joseph, for example, is nearly perfect in the Quran, unlike the flawed figure in the Bible. The origins of these variations remain unclear after online research. Some Quranic verses, like “God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity” (Surah 2:286), contrast with Christian teachings, such as Galatians 6:2's call to “bear one another's burdens.”Rumi's poetry feels modern and dreamlike but elusive compared to upcoming Roman poets. Plans are in place to revisit Rumi when studying Dante, a contemporary. The Quran was read on a Kindle (Clear Quran translation), which hindered the experience due to reliance on spatial memory for physical books, making note-taking and recall difficult. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music and Islamic architecture were briefly explored but felt overwhelming. Next week's reading covers Virgil's Aeneid (Books 1 and 2), Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book 1), and selections from Horace, Catullus, and Sulpicia in Davenport's Portable Roman Reader, with Verdi and Puccini arias and cave art.LINKSTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)Rumi's PoemsCONNECTTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Today, Pastor Jack teaches us that, as Christians, God calls us the salt of the earth, and if we stay pure, we will have great results. But, if we fall away, and allow the world to get into us, our compromise will leave us barren, and without effect. The post Parable Of Being The Salt – B first appeared on Pastor Jack Hibbs.

He shares his testimony, detailing his background as a devout Jew, educated under Gamaliel, and his earlier zeal for persecuting Christians. Paul recounts his dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, where God blinded him and instructed him to wait for further guidance. In Damascus, Ananias, a devout servant of Christ, heals Paul's blindness. He then commands Paul to be baptized to wash away his sins and explains God's mission for him to become an apostle to the Gentiles. This story incites the predominantly Jewish listeners to demand his death! The Roman commander prepares to flog Paul but hesitates when he learns that he is a Roman citizen. He is then brought to stand before the Jewish Council. Paul's conversion story is recounted three times in the Book of Acts. On this occasion, Paul himself shares the story with the Jews who called for his arrest. In this hostile setting, he describes how God intervened to guide him toward true faith in Jesus. He emphasized how God worked in his life to redirect his passion toward righteous ministry. He spoke the truth, even though it provoked anger among the audience. This is the humility and courage we strive to cultivate in our lives. If God is working to redirect you for His purpose, submit to Him. If He is using your voice to bring Christ's hope to others, regardless of how they respond, keep proclaiming the name of Jesus. God of grace, we praise You for Your loving-kindness towards all people. Paul's conversion illustrates how You seek out good-hearted individuals, forgiving their sins and repurposing them for Your glory. Thank You for pursuing us and patiently guiding us to submit to Your will. Help us to be grateful and to share Your mercies with others. Please provide us opportunities to share with others how good You have been, regardless of how people choose to receive it. Protect us from the enemy, but also involve us in challenging and meaningful ministry work in the name of our Savior Jesus. Thought Questions: - Paul used a Hebrew dialect to better relate to the audience. Are there ways you can modify your words to be better received by others? - God's action in Paul's life led him to humble obedience. Has God's patient pursuit of your soul humbled you? How has that changed you? - Paul was willing to die, but he also avoided a beating in this text. How do you balance self-sacrifice and self-defense in your faith?

We kicked off our new series, The Rebel Way, by diving deep into the Sermon on the Mount—a message that's as radical and relevant today as it was when Jesus first preached it. Pastors Mike Breaux, Chris Kuti and Carlos Erazo unpack the Beatitudes and how this countercultural invitation leads us toward a life of freedom, purpose, and transformation. From personal stories of brokenness to the beauty of surrender, we explored how Jesus flips the script on what it means to be truly blessed. Whether you're struggling with pride, searching for peace, or simply longing for a deeper relationship with God, this conversation reminds us that the narrow path is the one worth walking. As we follow Jesus upstream, we discover a faith that's authentic, compelling, and full of grace.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” - 2 Corinthians 8:9This powerful verse is often quoted when we talk about generosity, and rightly so. It shows us that generosity isn't just a financial principle—it's rooted in the very heart of the Gospel. Today, Dr. Nathan W. Harris joins us to explore that connection more deeply.Dr. Nathan W. Harris is the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at The University of Mobile in Mobile, Alabama. He is also the author of A Short Guide to Gospel Generosity: Giving as an Act of Grace. What Is Gospel Generosity?Gospel generosity is giving rooted in the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Generosity is not merely a virtue for the Christian life but a cheerful disposition that springs forth from the gospel. This kind of generosity arises from new life in Christ, is empowered by the Holy Spirit, and reflects the Father's model of grace throughout creation. At its core, gospel generosity isn't just about giving—it's about proclaiming and portraying Christ's saving work in our lives. It signifies a radical transformation of a believer's heart and mind, leading to joyful stewardship of resources in service to God's kingdom.Beyond the Tithe: A Higher CallingOne of the most debated topics surrounding generosity is the concept of tithing. Are Christians called to tithe, or is there a greater expectation? While tithing—giving 10%—is not explicitly required for Christians, the gospel calls us to something far greater. We aren't obligated to give; instead, Christians have an incredible gospel opportunity. We are called to live generously, humbly, selflessly, and with the kingdom of God in mind. This perspective reframes giving not as a rule to follow but as an act of grace and worship, rooted in gratitude for what Christ has done. How the Gospel Transforms Our View of MoneyThe gospel transforms our hearts and minds and revolutionizes how we approach money and stewardship. Martin Luther once said:“There are three conversions in one's life—the conversion of the heart, the mind, and the pocketbook.” When we encounter Christ, our hearts are filled with affection for Him, and our minds are set on heavenly things. However, many Christians struggle to surrender their finances to God fully. You can't hold on to Christ while also holding on to your money.A heart transformed by the gospel desires to honor Christ above wealth. A mind renewed by the gospel prioritizes kingdom values over worldly ones. This transformation shapes every aspect of our financial lives, from earning and saving to spending and giving.Living as Stewards of God's ResourcesWhen our hearts and minds are fully surrendered to Christ, our finances naturally follow. Giving becomes not just an obligation but an act of worship and a reflection of the gospel's transforming power. To explore these ideas further, check out Dr. Nathan W. Harris's book, A Short Guide to Gospel Generosity: Giving as an Act of Grace. This concise guide offers biblical wisdom and practical insights into living a life of joyful, gospel-rooted generosity. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a whole life insurance policy for my mom that we've been paying on for about nine years. Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com A lot of stories in the book of Daniel… food, lions, fires, beheading, Idols, end times… But if you have to title the book of Daniel… as in pick a theme or a title… it would be easy for me…. It would be called 73 seconds. 73 seconds… The Space shuttle had a 99.9999 perfection in its running parts. NEAR TOTAL PERFECTION. But in just 73 seconds due to the compromise of an O ring .0001 it imploded and millions watched 7 people die. Daniel is about NO COMPROMISE. NO COMPROMISE. Sermon, how did they overcome? They overcame by no compromise in any area for any reason and for anyone! As soon as you compromise even slightly, you have already lost for the slide slowly, but the end is destruction. HOW? Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; HE WAS 15 WHEN HE SAID THIS!!!!! WHAT DOES DEFILE ACTUALLY MEAN - simply live according to the culture. It was completely acceptable for everyone to live that way in Babylon. One of my favorite quotes: if you want to be really successful, true successful… study people, watch them, at work at home, at church, at the mall… AND THEN DO THE OPPOSITE! HE PURPOSED/RESOLVED IN HIS HEART AT 15… Remember Joash just 2 weeks ago… served God until his Father figure priest died and then he fell a part. BUT NOT DANIEL. Purposed = Set aside… appoint as to bring notice to! NOT ONLY WILL I MAKE A DECISION TO FOLLOW GOD - I WILL MAKE IT STAND OUT… IT WILL BE FOR RELIGIOUS PURPOSES! *If I might add as one of the biggest problems in todays Christians is they do not live any differently than the world. Sex, selfishness, jealousy, bitterness, excuses, work ethic, self centeredness… Christians don't stand out much any more.

This Sunday, Terrence continued in our series titled “Controversial Christianity”, addressing the topics of modesty and moderation within the Christian life. The message challenges believers to submit every area of life to Jesus, not out of legalism, but out of love, maturity, and commitment to holiness. Modesty and moderation are controversial, not necessarily in culture, but within the church due to a decline in discipleship and pursuit of holiness. The Christian call isn't to earn grace, but to abide in it through intentional, Spirit-led transformation. Terrence's message balances challenge with compassion, acknowledging past church wounds while calling for renewed pursuit of holiness through love, not legalism. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” - John 3:30 This short but powerful statement encapsulates the heartbeat of Christian discipleship. Whether we're talking about sexuality, personal behavior, finances, or lifestyle, the ultimate aim is for Christ to be magnified in every aspect of our lives, and for our self-centered impulses to surrender to His will. While the statement itself may not sound controversial, living it out certainly is—because it challenges our desire for self-elevation, comfort, and control. Discipleship isn't just about belief—it's about transformation, and that transformation requires wrestling with hard truths and inviting Jesus into every hidden corner of our lives. Scriptural Foundation: 2 Peter 1:1–10 This passage calls believers to supplement their faith with a list of virtues (goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, affection, and love). Peter urges Christians to confirm their calling by living fruitful, purposeful lives. These virtues aren't just moral checklists—they're evidence of a life rooted in Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Peter's letter was written to help the church persevere—first against persecution, and later against false teaching and spiritual laziness. His words are a reminder: we already have everything we need to live godly lives. The Holy Spirit, God's Word, the community of faith—these are tools at our disposal. Now it's on us to build the house—to add rooms of character, virtue, and maturity onto the foundation of faith. Ask the Holy Spirit daily: “Where, God?” – Where are you calling me to grow? He closes with a prayer by Saint Augustine, asking the Holy Spirit to breathe into every area of life and draw us deeper into God's holy purposes. “Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, to love what is holy.”

The Christian cultural denominator has disappeared in our respective nations. But then, the Christians who remain can't make up their mind whether they are salt or not. Mass confusion reigns — with the two kingdom people, the Trumpy agenda, the antisemitic crowd, the arguers over strategy, the Sojourners, and the wokey evangelicals. There isn't much salt left, and whatever is left lacks flavor. The solution is the same — churches doing Matthew 28:20 and 2 Tim. 3:17. This program includes: 1. Do you ever open your Bible and feel lost, not knowing where to begin? Or do you read a passage and think, "Now what?" This episode is for you. We're talking about the power of praying with the daily liturgical readings, or the lectionary. Following the lectionary is like having a wise guide lead you through Scripture. The Western church is in shambles. It has become lukewarm and compromised because of a love for the world, a lack of an awestruck fear of God, and a watered-down view of His grace and sovereignty. In answer to this crisis Kevin Swanson has issued an urgent call-to-arms in his new book, Strong: An Urgent Call to Strengthen the Things that Remain. Pulling no punches, he calls out Christians to reject escapist pursuits—be it through alcohol, sports, the Internet, or other off-ramps from reality—and pursue a stronger grace, a stronger faith, a stronger church, and stronger families. Join Scott Brown and Jason Dohm in today's podcast as they break down the book with Kevin.
How should Christians live as citizens in a secular society? Pastor John Munro examines our dual identity as both citizens and sojourners. While Christians are called to submit to government authorities, our ultimate allegiance belongs to Christ alone. Learn how true freedom comes not through rebellion but through serving God in a challenging political landscape.
Christianity is often considered prevalent when it comes to defining the key values of late antique society, whereas 'feeling connected to the Roman past' is commonly regarded as an add-on for cultivated elites. Roman Identity and Lived Religion: Baptismal Art in Late Antiquity (Cambridge UP, 2025) demonstrates the significant impact of popular Roman culture on the religious identity of common Christians from the fifth to the seventh century in the Mediterranean world. Baptism is central to the formation of Christian identity. The decoration of baptisteries reveals that traditional Roman culture persisted as an integral component of Christian identity in various communities. In their baptisteries, Christians visually and spatially evoked their links to Roman and, at times, even pagan traditions. A close examination of visual and material sources in North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and Italy shows that baptisteries served roles beyond mere conduits to Christian orthodoxy. June 8, 2025Jesus' letter to Sardis Church must have been difficult to receive for almost all of its members. Sardis Church had a reputation in the community for being alive, but Jesus knew this was inaccurate, a result of people looking at their outward appearances. He rebuked them and called them “dead”, meaning almost all of them were apathetic Christians: half-hearted, complacent, going through the motions. Furthermore, their works were displeasing to God. They were a church with dead people, and dead works. Jesus commanded them to wake up, strengthen one another, remember and obey what they had received (and forgotten), and repent, or else Jesus would come against them unexpectedly, and discipline them. Fortunately for Sardis Church, all was not lost. Jesus knew there were “a few” (not many at all) vibrant Christians in Sardis Church that had remained spiritually alive, devoted followers of Jesus. Jesus praised these few for resisting the pull to follow the sinful culture of the city, and He considered them worthy. Jesus promised to walk with them, clothe them in white, protect their names in the book of life, and claim them as His own. The timeless theological principle: Jesus desires and blesses vibrant Christians, and will discipline apathetic Christians who do not wake up and repent. The application for us today is straightforward: strive to be a vibrant Christian, and ensure your firm commitment to Jesus is contagious.Revelation 3:1-6
