Push Playto Listen On this episode of Our PNW Music, we talk with Brett Benton and Jesse James of the BRETT BENTON TRIO. Brett Benton, originally from Tuscaloosa AL, is an extraordinarily talented young guitarist who has dedicated his art to preserving the early Delta Country Hill Blues music style, which originated in Mississippi in the early 20th century and was popularized by artists such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, R.L. Burnside and Lead Belly. Jesse James, who is also an extremely gifted guitarist, originally hails from outside of Lake Chelan. When Jesse isn't playing bass guitar for Brett, he's playing lead guitar as the front man for his own band, Jesse James and The Mob.Listen while both Brett and Jesse give us a history lesson on the Delta Country Hill Blues style, and tell us what initially drew them to music and more importantly, what enticed them about this genre that played a pivotal role in the shaping of Rock & Roll. Watch our videos of each song and some cover songs on the show page: https://www.ourpnwmusic.com/podcast/032We love Savanna Woods so much that we invited her onto the podcast again .... only this time she brought her friends and took over. A major theme that weaves throughout Savanna Woods' world is “community”. Whether it be through her family, friends, church, followers or her musical tribe ..... she's happiest when surrounded by those she loves. So in November of 2020, Savanna brought some of her musician kinsfolk to meet us at Katt's Westside Stories in Mount Vernon, WA for another episode of the podcast. On the cajón is Dr Sweets (Andrew Sweeting), on the piano is Andrea Fountain and on the violin is Mandy Weeda. Although Savanna has played numerous times with each one of these musicians, it was the first time all four have played together as a group. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we did.FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/SavannaWoodsMusic/Instagram: https://instagram.com/savannawoodsmusic?igshid=1wrk6qgn3o7quYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCG4m23o5X-88wL7f2YXTxtQWebsite: https://www.patreon.com/SavannaWoodsEmail: savannaeden2@gmail.comCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://jackmattinglyandwhiskeyfever.com/media The song used in the intro is 'Why Would I Ever Want to Miss This'
Rudy is a hunting novice and will be getting educated through conversations with Kris Cantrell and others.Kris, owner of Cantrell Outdoors, loves to hunt! He has a room in his basement which is registered in the state of Washington as a museum because he collects taxidermy from every successful hunt. Pick a hunt which will be attainable and successful. Don't start out with an extreme hunt and try to make sure you will have fun. Success doesn't always mean a kill.Which weapon will you start with. Bow, Rifle and muzzle loader. Are you comfortable with either? If not, than you will most likely be successful with rifle.ON X Maps app for your smart phone. This is a lifesaver to help hunters know where to hunt. It is leaps and bounds above anything else out there. You may have public land right near your house and this app will show you.Working out to make sure you can hang in the mountains and terrain you are hunting in. It will change you as a hunter if you get a perfect kill and are not in shape enough to pack out all the meat.Hunters Education is a must. We are hoping to find someone who teaches these courses to chat with on the podcast.Regulations is a very important topic to get the basics of. Know when and where you can hunt! What are the rules. Changes happen every year. Shooting hours, hunters orange, areas where you can and can't use rifles are a few of the rules to cover.Buck fever- The make or break moment in a hunt. This is real and needs to be talked about before taking your first shot in the field.Shot placement is so important. A new hunter should study where to aim and where exactly are the vitals. Everyone will make a bad shot, though preparation is important. If you do not get a kill shot and ethics will tell you to properly chase the animal and fill your tag with THAT animal.Once you get to your freshly killed animal, now you need to know how to properly turn it into something which will feed your family. Knowing the edible parts and how to correctly butcher it. Keep the area clean and practice proper field care. We would love to chat with a butcher on the podcast eventually. Will you scout an area or pick an area and go there to find your animals in the moment? We will chat about trips in both styles and time could be the big difference between the two.CWD is a topic all hunters should know about and be aware of. Chronic Wasting Disease is in. most southern states of the USA and is slowly spreading to western states. What type of clothing should you hunt in? We will talk about the different seasons and what you will need.Types of hunts- Tree stand hunting, spot and stock, road hunting. There may be different animals that may be better to hunt with certain styles.Binoculars and scopes will be a topic to cover. There are so many different levels to choose from in price and efficiency.Long distance shooting has a ton of ins and outs to discuss. Wind, terrain and even the Earth's curvature come into factor. Kris feels like he can talk for hours about this.Public Land! The politics behind hunting is an important thing to discuss. Conservation is key to the future of hunting.Out of state or out of country hunting. CWD plays a factor between states and flying can put a big wrench in your wheel if it is not planned out properly. We both think it would be a fun conversation to chat with a non hunter who doesn't understand why people hunt. It is good to civilly discuss this topic to get the points out on the table. What about vegans or vegetarians?Hunters ethics is another discussion that can go on for hours. We will dive into the do's and don'ts of hunting. How can we get more people interested in hunting? Are there other people who didn't grow up hunting who we can helpmeet interested in it? This will only help preserve more areas for hunting in the future and better the future of the animals we hunt. Our daughter- will we pass on our hunting knowledge to our kids? How does hunting affect our personal relationships? Rudy and Kris sit down to talk about deer in Washington. Whitetail Deer are prolific on the Northeast corner of the state, Mule Deer are found in Eastern Washington and Blacktail Deer are in Western Washington.Kris talks about the population of deer on our Islands like Whidbey Island. There are plenty of attainable, great tasting deer out there! He likens the area to a rainforest and actually calls it a “hoot of a hunt”…. Haha. Jurasic style was another, perhaps better descriptive he gives. We talk about the differences between the points of deer. The forks of deer antlers determine how many points the deer is labeled as. Rudy didn't know any of this.Winthrop is a known place for mule deer hunting in Eastern Washington. People will call certain areas over there a “pumpkin patch” because of the enormous amount of hunters wearing blaze orange all hunting the same area.Rudy asks, “Why wear camouflage, if you are required to wear a blaze orange vest?” Kris talks about this topic a bit.The idea, Kris tells, is to find an area where others won't be. This gives you an advantage in finding better deer. Even just getting a mile off any road will help a bunch. Checking maps to find meadowy, water filled areas to hike to.Regulations are important to follow in order to stay within the laws. They will also tell you when exactly you can hunt what areas. Also, special tags can be applied for to hunt deer in areas or times when it is normally not permitted.Rudy asks an ethics question about shooting a buck while mating during the rut… It gets a bit funny before the boys get back on track.Kris walks us through the shot itself. Placement, environment and making sure it is a legal deer to shoot.Rudy tells a story about an “albino” buck he and his dad spotted with binoculars near an alpine lake. It was a monster and the size was noticeable after some other hikers scared it off. The deer was huge as compared to the hikers. Kris said it was probably a piebald deer which has a patchwork of blonde hair. The size described leads to the probability of it being an elk.Follow the podcast- https://www.instagram.com/iwillhuntpodcast/Follow Cantrell Outdoors- https://www.instagram.com/cantrelloutdoors/Cantrell Outdoors website- https://cantrelloutdoors.comJack Mattingly of the Whiskey Fever was nice enough to write a short song to use as the intro and outro. Kris Cantrell owns and runs Cantrell Outdoors. He typically says to start with a gun you can do a lot with. He often recommend the .300 ultra magnum. It is a magnum cartridge which can shoot just about anything in the lower 48 states of North America.“Shoot as big of a caliber as you are comfortable with.” Some hunters are recoil sensitive so this can limit their caliber size.Muzzle breaks redirect the sound right back to your ears though they also help with recoil. Wearing ear plugs is a must in this type of a setup.Kris is excited, and he uses, carbon fiber barrels. These barrels will take a big percentage of weight off of your overall weight of your rifle.First time rifle buyers should buy a cheaper manufactured gun for their first rifle. Custom guns, like this Kris make, are a lot more expensive,Scopes, even within the same brand, can vary in price. This can altar the overall price of your hunting setup. When shooting a gun for the first time, you might consider using multiple brands of bullets in order to figure what your rifle will do with each bullet. also, when at the range, try shooting off the belly, kneeling and standing in order to practice a real, possible shot.Bipods are helpful in the field. Make sure to practice with them and in the style where you will need to use the bipod. Otherwise you might consider leaving it at home.Follow the podcast- https://www.instagram.com/iwillhuntpodcast/Follow Cantrell Outdoors- https://www.instagram.com/cantrelloutdoors/Cantrell Outdoors website- https://cantrelloutdoors.comJack Mattingly of the Whiskey Fever was nice enough to write a short song to use as the intro and outro. Hunting can take you away from roads and trails so it is important to be in shape in order to deal with the strenuous conditions.Cardio is important, though someone getting ready for spot and stalk hunts should also be concerned with their strength. Box jumps and stair climbs will help out a ton. Your pack will most likely have 20-40 extra pounds in it after loading it with meat, so you need to be strong in order to scary that extra weight.Kris tells a grueling story about a time he was on a hunt and was not in good enough shape to pack out his bear. He was out of shape and split from his group. He shot a bear and had to go disarticulate it. Getting out of the situation ended with his partners needing to use rope to help him out of nasty hole.Somehow we ended up talking about Mule Tape… Kris recommends it. If you are an out of shape hunter, you might want to carry some in your pack if you need your hunting buddies to pull you out of hole.Rudy just joined back up with Mt Baker Crossfit after a year plus hiatus. Crossfit just might be the best style of working out for priming your body for hunting. Rudy has had some back injuries in the past and so he has been stretching out extra to try an help balance the extra effort.“Born from the depths of Hates,” is how Kris describes the Stair Mill or possibly the StairMaster Step Mill.Follow the podcast- https://www.instagram.com/iwillhuntpodcast/Follow Cantrell Outdoors- https://www.instagram.com/cantrelloutdoors/Cantrell Outdoors website- https://cantrelloutdoors.comJack Mattingly of the Whiskey Fever was nice enough to write a short song to use as the intro and outro. On this episode of Our PNW Music, we sit down with Dennis Dorgan. You may remember Dennis as a young phenom lead guitarist, up on stage slaying solos with Jack Mattingly & Whiskey Fever. Dennis has been busy in 2020; establishing his own band (New Brother), creating music and writing his own style of poignant lyrics and melodies. Coming from a poverty-stricken childhood with depression issues that ran throughout his family, Dennis has a perspective that not all of our local artists possess. The openness of his music, albeit raw and unpolished, pulls the listener into a world that not all of us are familiar with. He opens a window into his soul, and in doing so, grants the listener access to his psyche. We are honored that he chose our platform to talk about where he's come from, new ventures and debut his artistry.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NewBrotherBand/Instagram: https://instagram.com/newbrotherband?igshid=isx0hqzh1yjsEmail: newbrotherband@gmail.com
This episode of Our PNW Music is the debut of The Stepdads, a duo made up of childhood friends Jack Mattingly (Jack Mattingly & Whiskey Fever, Bare Feet, Bad Chuck) and Dusty Claybo (The Last Resort, Bad Chuck). This is the second music collaboration that Jack and Dusty have created; the first being Bad Chuck, which was a venture born when they were in high school and lasted until they were in their early 20's.The Stepdads episode is about a friendship that is nearly three decades in the making. With our world enveloped in a pandemic, division and protesting centuries of inequality and injustices, Jack and Dusty embody the innocence of childhood friendship, playing guitars in the back yard with the fur babies and spending free time in the woods instead of in front of a TV. Listen while they entertain us with stories from when they were in 4th grade all the way up to present time; you'll laugh and cry (from laughing so hard). The music centerpiece of this episode is a song called “The Roaring 20's” that Jack wrote on January 2nd, 2020 after spending a few celebratory days with his BFF, Dusty. The song was a take off from the ‘roaring' 1920's and meant to be a hopeful outlook into the 2020's. Listening to the song now, it derives a sort of eerie, prophetic sentiment. The song is brilliantly written and has an all encompassing melody that will have you reaching for the repeat button each time the song ends. If you have never heard a Jack Mattingly song, “The Roaring 20's” is a perfect representation of his incredible artistic talent. As far as the Our PNW Music co-hosts are concerned .... all roads lead to Jack
With the “stay at home order” in place, Our PNW Music podcast had to get creative in order to bring you the best of the Pacific Northwest musicians. With most of the country hunkering down at home due to the COVID-19 virus, it got us thinking .... or maybe remembering.... there used to be a time, before music streaming services and mixed tapes, where we would listen to a FULL vinyl album (and 8-tracks/cassettes/CD's). In the words of Shane Gildnes from Fanny Alger, it was a time “that provided for the ability to not listen to music as a background activity, but it was actually THE activity”. Now, when so many people have this extra time on their hands, it's a great opportunity to go back and revisit the “lost art of deep listening”. On “Listening To Albums Again II” we spoke with Dennis Dorgan (New Brother, Whiskey Fever) and Chuck Dingée (The Walrus, Free Harmony)Dennis Dorgan recounts how the “Commit This To Memory” album by Motion City Soundtrack helped him deal with the suicide of his brother; listening to other narratives helped him consider other prospectives. “Reconstruction Site” by The Weakerthans helped pull him through his own suicidal feelings.Chuck Dingée spoke about his love of concept albums, starting with Pink Floyd's “Dark Side Of The Moon”; where there was very little space between the songs because it was made to be listened to as one whole piece. Other concept albums that Chuck dives into are: “Twelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus” by Spirit, “It's A Beautiful Day” by It's A Beautiful Day and “Abbey Road” and “Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” by The Beatles.Do you have any albums that you've listened to over and over from beginning to end? If so, let us know. We're always anxious to add to our own collections.

Nathan Barnes is on to talk about Alpine Lakes Wilderness guidebook he co-authored with his brother. Covering all the trails within Alpine Lakes Wilderness, which stretches trailheads from I-90 to Stevens Pass and across Blewit Pass. One of the different aspects these two authors bring, is the history of hikes and the locations they traverse or pass.I love the story author Nathan Barnes tells about Forest Service employee, Hal Sylvester, and his passion for areas like the Lady Lakes Loop.We also bring up their other book Hiking Through History Washington.Purchase the book- https://www.mountaineers.org/books/books/alpine-lakes-wilderness-the-complete-hiking-guideWebsite- http://hikingwithmybrother.comFacebook- https://www.facebook.com/hikingwithmybrotherUpcoming Events with the authors· The Mountaineers Everett Branch Open House | June 5, 7pm at Snohomish County PUD Building (2320 California St, Everett, WA 98206)· Author Talk | June 11, 7pm at Browsers Bookshop (107 Capitol Way N, OLYMPIA, WA 98501)· Book Release Party | June 13, 6pm at Pro Ski and Mountain Service (108 W North Bend Way, North Bend, WA 98045)· Author Talk | June 14, 7pm at Village Books (1200 11th Street Bellingham, WA 98225)· Hiking Seminar + Alpine Lakes Wilderness | June 18, 6:30pm at The Mountaineers Tacoma Program Center (2302 N 30th St, Tacoma, WA 98403)Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.

We talk all about ticks! Why do they bite? How to remove them? How long do they feed?Dr Ingels confirms the bullseye rash appears around a tick bite only if the person contracted Lyme Disease. Also, I ask Dr Ingels about Lyme disease and how it may affect you. He tells various symptoms of Lyme Disease as well as it’s history. What type of ticks carry Lyme? How long does a tick have to bite you in order to contract Lyme? From website-Developed by a leading naturopathic physician, Dr. Ingels has chronicled a unique integrated medicine approach to treating both acute and chronic Lyme disease. Learn about the proven results from a physician who has successfully managed his Lyme disease symptoms for more than 15 years. The statistics about Lyme disease are alarming: it is one of the fastest-growing infectious diseases in the US and it is very difficult to diagnose and treat. Millions of people worldwide suffer from its often-changing symptoms which confuse it with many other diseases. In The Lyme Solution, Dr. Darin Ingels details his ground-breaking approach to healing both acute and chronic Lyme disease.Conventional treatment protocol too often relies on toxic doses of antibiotics that may weaken your body and worsen symptoms. Dr. Ingels’ approach is to boost your body’s innate ability to heal itself. The Lyme Solution offers the latest research about the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme, but more importantly, Dr. Ingels’ approach provides a path to wellness by fortifying the gut (microbiome) and enhancing the immune system, which then strengthens the body’s ability to heal from within.Purchase the book- https://www.amazon.com/Lyme-Solution-Inflammatory-Auto-Immune-Response/dp/0735216304Website- https://dariningelsnd.comInstagram- https://www.instagram.com/dariningelsnd/Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/DarinIngelsNDWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comDon't forget to shop our Cascade Hiker Hats and Bumper Stickers!Join Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.
Kris was drawn for the Multi Season Elk Tag and he is very excited. This is not a once in a lifetime, so he hopes to win this every year… Ha!He is sort of torn on location because Western WA Roosevelt Elk is what he is leaning towards. We dig into all the details of what this tag means.Kris describes the terrain where Roosevelt Elk are in Western Washington. He brings up scent indicating contraptions, which I was surprised we hadn’t discussed before.Follow the podcast- https://www.instagram.com/iwillhuntpodcast/Follow Cantrell Outdoors- https://www.instagram.com/cantrelCantrell Outdoors website- https://cantrelloutdoors.comJack Mattingly of the Whiskey Fever was nice enough to write a short song to use as the intro and outro. Kris does his usual top notch job teaching me these things I have no clue about. Rudy didn’t know any of this.Winthrop is a known place for mule deer hunting in Eastern Washington. People will call certain areas over there a “pumpkin patch” because of the enormous amount of hunters wearing blaze orange all hunting the same area.Rudy asks, “Why wear camouflage, if you are required to wear a blaze orange vest?” Kris talks about this topic a bit.The idea, Kris tells, is to find an area where others won’t be. Elaine Bissonho is known as Brazil nut on the trail. She grew up in Brazil and currently lives in Bend, Oregon. She became the third female to earn her double triple crown from ALDHA West this past Fall at the Gathering, putting her in the ranks with Anish and Yogi.We talk about her 2018 hike on the PCT when she hiked from Mexico to Canada in 66 days. She pushed herself, knowing that Anish had done it in 60 days. Brazil Nut took three showers on this thru hike and a bunch of cold plunges in various lakes along the route. She talks about her fears on trail. How she handles them and what are her fears.A friend in Boston encouraged her to go on her first hike. “I don’t hike!” was Brazil Nut’s first response. Crazy to think that. They ended up hiking in New Hampshire and she went on many hikes in that area afterward. The White Mountains were her first love.Stretching is very important for Brazil Nut. She would use her elbows to work on her legs and she tries to keep her feet lubed up. She uses three different types of socks which she changes out during the day along with a healthy dose of vaseline. She is hoping to do the Arizona Trail, Great Divide Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail this year.Follow her on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/elainebrazilnut/Six Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comDon't forget to shop our Cascade Hiker Hats and Bumper Stickers!Join Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.
Candice Burt wears many hats in the world of Ultrarunning. She is a runner herself, she directs and holds multiple races every year and now she has started a podcast called Humans of Ultrarunning. We talk about the trails near her home in Leavenworth, WA. One of her favorite spots, the Enchantments, is only 13 miles away. Hiking, running and skiing are easy to do in her hometown. Her three 200 mile ultra marathons are known as the triple crown of 200’s. The Tahoe 200, the Bigfoot 200 and the Moab 240 Endurance Run.I paused to note Candice had just raced the Hurt 100 ultra marathon in Hawaii about a week before our conversation. She brings up her goal to get the supported FKT on the 800 mile long Arizona Trail this year.Humans of Ultrarunning 12 or 13 great episodes. We mention Courtney Dauwalter from episode one, Gene Dykes from her most recent episode and her bonus show about Candice’s own solo/unsupported FKT on the Wonderland Trail.I also asked Candice about women’s strength in long distance running and hiking and what are her fears when out alone.Podcast on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/humansofultrarunning/Follow her on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/runcandicerun/Podcast website- http://humansofultrarunning.comEverything Candice Burt- http://www.wilddefined.comSix Moons DesignTents and morehttps://www.sixmoondesigns.comWaymark Gear CompanyHeavy duty ultralight backpackshttps://www.waymarkgearco.comJoin Me at Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=5262583Twitter @N_CascadehikingLike our Facebook Page Cascade Hiker PodcastOn Instagram Cascade Hiker PodcastCheck out Whiskey Fever: https://www.reverbnation.com/whiskeyfever The song used in the intro is 'Tall Grass' from their album Gonna Wake Up This Whole Town.
Pick a hunt which will be attainable and successful. Don’t start out with an extreme hunt and try to make sure you will have fun. Success doesn’t always mean a kill.Which weapon will you start with. Shooting hours, hunters orange, areas where you can and can’t use rifles are a few of the rules to cover.Buck fever- The make or break moment in a hunt. Wind, terrain and even the Earth’s curvature come into factor. We both think it would be a fun conversation to chat with a non hunter who doesn’t understand why people hunt. It is good to civilly discuss this topic to get the points out on the table. What about vegans or vegetarians?Hunters ethics is another discussion that can go on for hours. We will dive into the do’s and don’ts of hunting. How can we get more people interested in hunting? Are there other people who didn’t grow up hunting who we can helpmeet interested in it? This will only help preserve more areas for hunting in the future and better the future of the animals we hunt. Our daughter- will we pass on our hunting knowledge to our kids? How does hunting affect our personal relationships? Family is important and so is the quality of food we procure.Follow the podcast- https://www.instagram.com/iwillhuntpodcast/Follow Cantrell Outdoors- https://www.instagram.com/cantrelloutdoors/Cantrell Outdoors website- https://cantrelloutdoors.comJack Mattingly of the Whiskey Fever was nice enough to write a short song to use as the intro and outro.
