In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Atheltic, we are joined by Jay “Meat Grinder” France. Meat Grinder is a thru-hiker, author, and 31-year veteran of the Air Force, having completed 10 deployments and graduated from Army Ranger School in the process. Jay details his military background, including some key similarities and differences relative to thru-hiking, how he used vlogging as a way to stay in touch with his sons on trail, and the hilarious blood nipple origin story of his trail name. Meat Grinder also recently served as a volunteer advocate for Hike The Hill, an annual event where trail advocates meet with U.S. Congress to promote policies and funding that support trails, public lands, and outdoor recreation. Jay offers some important advice for those who want to advocate for public lands, especially relevant in today's climate. We wrap the show with the top AT hostels, our triple crown of airplane snacks, and two completely unnecessary improvements to the Appalachian Trail. Her book, "Running from Perfection," comes out this spring (April 26th 2025).  Part memoir, part neuroscience, her story delves into the neurobiology of eating disorders, how our brains form habits and addictions, and how nature and exercise can help us heal from mental health disorders such as eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Since regaining her health, Caitlin has run numerous marathons and ultramarathons, including a 50 mile race on the Mountains-to-Sea trail, and recently completed the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier (93 miles in three days). She has also embraced mountaineering, summiting Mount Rainier and Mount Baker, and is planning to climb Denali in 2026. Her story is about perseverance, overcoming mental health obstacles, and finding passion in sports that have transformed her from a 100-pound girl with anorexia to a strong, 150-pound athlete who is ready to take on new challenges!  Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions about eating disorders, mental health challenges, and recovery. They relate Grey's anatomy to this day on trail. The girls discuss moving through rockfall terrain and a way they keep themselves safe. During their second longest day on trail, the girls get an early start…not! They wake to cold temperatures and discuss procrastinating vs productivity. After literally taking candy from strangers, they discuss the phenomenon of every snack someone else brings being better than the ones you brought. Portions of the discussion lead to the real question: has Molly been cryogenically frozen? After leaving camp, they enjoy a big day, cross frying pan creek, remember the cruelty of the sudden, hidden uphill, cross the White River and get their resupply. Hear their thoughts on whether or not it's a good idea to resupply from “hiker buckets”. They go to the Sunrise area and are surprised by their thoughts on the northern region of Rainier. Sunset shenanigans lead to night hiking and the creation of the ballad “We don't need no trouble”. Their tent site is the location of “spider-maggedon.” Join us for another day on trail!!

Forging on, the sisters admire the beauty of Indian Bar in the fall. Molly is reminded of the importance of paying attention to the trail, and is left with a bloody knee. The Wonderland Trail Just Got Better—Don't Miss Tami Asars' Updated Guide

Exploring Washington State

Prepare for an epic conversation with adventure, history, and quirky insights! In this episode of the Exploring Washington State Podcast, host Scott Cowan reunites with guest Tami Asars to discuss the second edition of her book, Hiking the Wonderland Trail. But this isn't just any trail story—it's a deep dive into one of Washington's most beloved trails, spanning 93 miles around the iconic Mount Rainier. So, what's new with the Wonderland Trail?  Is it the same grueling trek it's always been, or have hikers discovered new ways to conquer it? With over a dozen hikes, Tami reveals the triumphs and challenges of trekking this legendary trail. From "fastest known time" attempts to leisurely 14-day adventures with toddlers in tow, the Wonderland is as diverse as the people who hike it. Ever wonder how many times you can climb 22,000 feet of elevation without losing your mind? Tami has the answer and some sage advice: hike your own hike. But don't be fooled by those short daily mileage plans—every step on the Wonderland Trail demands stamina and respect, as the constant ascents and descents push even seasoned hikers to their limits. Want to know the history behind this backcountry gem?  Tami dives into the fascinating origins of the trail, which began as a ranger patrol route in 1915 to combat poachers and wildfires. At one point, there were plans to build a road around Mount Rainier's glaciers! Thankfully, those grand ideas evolved into the trail we know today—a wild escape consistently ranked among the top 10 hikes in the U.S. And here's a twist: Tami's connection to the Wonderland Trail runs deep—not just as a hiker, but on a personal level, with family memories tied to the park. Her husband even proposed to her there, and she shares a mystical tale of a bear sighting that coincided with her nephew's birth. It's clear this trail isn't just dirt and switchbacks—it's woven into her life story. If you're considering hiking the Wonderland Trail, Tami's book might be your new best friend.  With insights on permits (hello, tricky lottery system!), tips for pacing, and ways to avoid common trail pitfalls, she makes planning accessible and even fun. The second edition also offers extras like "stay-a-day" options and wildlife hotspots marked with a fun bear paw icon—perfect for spotting marmots and mountain goats along the way. Curious about life on the trail? Tami spills the beans on trail culture, from the joys of finding a trail family to the quirks of backcountry etiquette. Ever wondered how hikers communicate without cell service? Spoiler: they rely on apps like FarOut (formerly known as GutHook), which work offline and keep adventurers on track with GPS, comments, and waypoints. And if you think Tami's adventures end with the Wonderland Trail, think again. She's also a triple crowner, having completed the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail. Each journey brought revelations, but will she hike the PCT again? Please tune in to discover her surprising thoughts on future trails and whether the Pacific Northwest Trail might be next on her list. As the conversation winds down, Tami shares some of her favorite local spots in North Bend—like Huckstauder Coffee and Rio Bravo for lunch—and hints at exciting new projects, including an upcoming book on trail culture. Will we see Tami's Snoqualmie Region guide hit shelves next year? Only time will tell. With wit, humor, and a sprinkle of pumpkin spice debate (yes, it gets real), this episode captures the heart of what makes the Wonderland Trail—and hiking—so magical. Ready to disconnect, embrace the wilderness, and maybe even spot a bear or two? This episode will leave you itching to lace up your boots and hit the trail. And who knows? You might find yourself planning a trek sooner than you think.

Christine Reed's journey into the outdoors began in her 20s, sparked by a fascination with the Appalachian Trail. Despite a non-outdoorsy upbringing, she found purpose and inspiration through reading about the AT, leading her to plan and hike sections of the trail. Her path eventually led her to Yosemite, where she discovered rock climbing, although it wasn't until her move to Denver that she fully embraced the sport. ⁣ Feeling disconnected from conventional day-to-day life, Christine bought a van and embarked on a nomadic journey without a clear plan. As she navigated the road, she sought independence and faced questions about her motivations. Initially struggling to find community and purpose, she hiked the Wonderland Trail, which prompted her to reflect on solitude and independence. This introspection led her to write "Alone in Wonderland," a book that became a cornerstone of her journey. ⁣ Through her writing, Christine explores the interaction between independence and loneliness, shedding light on the complexities of living a nomadic lifestyle. Her experiences highlight the challenges and unexpected lessons of life on the road, offering insights into adaptation, learning, and finding comfort in the unconventional. Driven by a professional mission to impact the world through storytelling, Christine aims to transition into publishing other people's books, aspiring to publish 10 books a year by 2030. Her writing process involves intense focus interspersed with outdoor activities, often in coffee shops or her van. Looking ahead, she envisions owning a small A-frame cabin while maintaining her nomadic lifestyle.

Bio- Christine discovered long distance backpacking while surfing the internet at work. She decided that day to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. Her Rugged Outdoors Woman persona started as a joke, a nod to the outdoor adventurer that she wished to be. One adventure led to another and since then she has hiked the Wonderland Trail, the Colorado Trail and thousands more miles along the way. Her debut memoir, Alone in Wonderland, is about backpacking, but it is really about the independence that we seek when we go into nature solo. Bio- I was born in San Diego, California, the 6th of 7 children. Five brothers and a sister. Attended elementary, Junior High, High School and Community College in San Diego. Married at 21 and we moved to Washington. We had two sons. I was a stay-at-home mom. I took up jogging and would jog about 5 miles several times a week. A friend of mine took me on a hike to Emerald Ridge in Mt. Rainier National Park, and I fell in love with the mountains and hiking. After my divorce from my first husband, I joined the Tacoma Mountaineers and took the Basic Climbing class. Also got involved with a group of Mountaineers who liked to hike and backpack.  After two years in the Mountaineers, I met my present husband, Ted, who was very much into climbing. Our family grew to 5, as he had 3 children of his own. Thirteen years ago, as my husband and I were walking our dog early in the morning, we were crossing the street at an intersection. A car drove through the red light, and slammed into my husband and dog. My husband was airlifted to HarborView Hospital in Seattle, and our little dog died. This pretty much ended much of my husband's climbing with me. We had also been training to summit Mt. Rainier and to go on a mission trip to Uganda with Children of the Nations. He still suffers from the traumatic brain injury he incurred. About 13 years ago, we built a home on property we had purchased over 25 years ago near the entrance of Mt. Rainier. We love it here very much. Currently, I hike with a group of ladies almost every week. We go to different places to hike or snowshoe to in the winter season. I also manage a Yurt for Mt. Tahoma Trails Association in Ashford. The huts and yurt are open to the public and run by us volunteers. Also, after 33 years of marriage, we have 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. I am happy that some of my grandchildren enjoy the outdoors also. I have met friends who climb mountains, so I started climbing with them. I summitted Mt. Rainier 6 years ago with friends at the age of 72. This year was my 9th summit of Mt. Rainier. I also hiked the 500 mile El Camino de Santiago, starting in France, 6 years ago, and backpacked the 93 mile Wonderland Trail of Mt. Rainier last year in 14 days and 12 nights. I am always excited for every day that I am given. I feel every day is a gift from God and He always has some kind of great adventure for me. AWJ (Adventures With Jesus) That is our motto. Whether its for 6 hours, 24 hours, or 72 hours (or more), fixed time ultras are unlike any other standard-distance race. With typically super repetitive courses, frequent aid stations, and racing against the clock, they have earned their right as one of the most brutal challenges if you're looking to push yourself to the extreme. And today's guest is someone who has had tons of success (and fun) competing in fixed time ultras! Today, we're chatting with Rachel Entrekin, who is an endurance athlete based out of Southern California. She has tons of experience and solid results in fixed time ultras, FKTs, and standard distance ultras. Some of her results include winning the Across The Years 48 hour race, winning the Jackpot Ultras 24 hour race, nabbing FKTs on the Wonderland Trail, Rae Lakes Loop, and Trans-Catalina trail, and so many more! In this episode, Rachel discusses her strategy for crushing fixed time ultras (while also having fun), what mental tricks she uses to help keep herself in the game when things get tough, and powerful lessons she's learned from life experiences that translate into her racing. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Christine Reed. I recently read her fantastic book, Alone in Wonderland, about her experience on the Wonderland Trail in Washington State, USA. It's a fantastic blend of a travel journal and personal memoir, including reflections on her life experiences. I highly recommend it! In this episode, we talk about lessons learned from hiking multiple trails. We discuss how trails can help us to figure things out, and how to get started on your own solo backpacking adventures.   About Christine Christine Reed is a long-distance backpacker and author of the memoir, Alone in Wonderland. She shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker to rugged outdoorswoman in hopes of inspiring others to see something bigger for themselves-- whatever that may be. But also to remind us that a good story is about sharing something of ourselves and connecting with others. Christine Reed is an author and freelancer who has traveled extensively around the states in three different vans as part of the vanlife movement, and she's looking forward to partnering soon with a company that builds out vans for people who intend to travel and live in them as opposed to RVs or other styles of tiny homes. She loves the rugged outdoors and long-distance backpacking and wrote her first book, a memoir titled Alone in Wonderland. In her book and in talks at events such as TinyFest, REI and other outdoorsy supply stores, Christine shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker/retail worker to a lifestyle of freedom and adventure. Christine likes to inspire people to see something bigger for themselves but is also quick to share about her own struggles with loneliness at times on the road or trail and how she's come to find ways of embracing some of that discomfort and connecting with her own self as well as with others. In this episode, Christine talks about what it's been like to be a self-published author on tour during a global pandemic and how that's affected the timeline of her book tour while also running a freelance business as a writer and social media manager. She does work from her home base in the Denver and sometimes Phoenix area, sometimes a few weeks or a month at a time. When she went from hiking extensively on the Appalachian and Wonderland Trail to staying somewhere different nearly every night while on tour, it was socially and physically exhausting for her as someone who tends toward the introverted side. She's learned to balance the amount of time she travels with the amount of time she can spend outdoors and working and resting. Her days are often spent at libraries and coffee shops for wifi, and she generally has signal and access to wifi as she generally stays close to metropolitan areas when she's working. Christine loves the freedom that her vanlife lifestyle has allowed, but she recommends that people who are considering it for the first time go ahead and rent a van first to see if it's something that they really want to invest in, most people know within the first 6 months if it's sustainable for them. Some of the tools and tips that Christine recommends for working remotely, and specifically while on the road to some extent, include keeping a structured calendar to avoid work creeping into free time and scheduling Zoom sessions with work-from-home and other vanlife friends for accountability and socialization. Her book was really a sort of a catalyst for her to get where she is now. It was the first move into a more alternative lifestyle, and she wouldn't be working remotely without it; but the book, at the same time, also helps give her the freedom to keep hiking every year. She intends to write her second book soon, so stay tuned!Christine can be found in the following places:Instagram or Tiktok: @ruggedoutdoorswomane-mail: ruggedoutdoorswoman@gmail.comwebsite: https://www.aloneinwonderland.com/

In S2Ep10 of the PRP, Adam parleys with seasoned ultra runner, metallurgical engineer, San Fransisco running connoisseur and ultimate adventurer Alex Hudgins who has been preparing for the Speedgoat 50K on July 23rd, 2022. Alex sheds light on his childhood and humbly admits that he is extremely lucky to have been exposed to the outdoors in a multitude of ways at a young age and credits his love for and confidence in nature to his parents. Although Alex throws down some insanely massive runs on the regs, the PRP listenership learns that he only caught the ultra bug in 2017. That being said his combination of XC experience at a collegiate level with his experience in the great outdoors have complimented each other well as he has truly began to blossom as an all around adventurer. Sam Kirk, small business owner, proud father of two and emerging ultra runner joins the show as guest host and offers his sharp-witted opinions on Alex and all things ultra running. Having just turned 40 and fathering two terrific toddlers, his view on the sport and his "why" have changed dramatically over the past few years and he offers some profound advice on how to be and remain happy by giving yourself grace when training and preparing for larger efforts. The two Lehigh University alums share some heartfelt insight into the vast world of Strava and provide insight on how they assemble their training blocks to ensure they're ready when it's time to rock. Alex shares his two main reasons for loving the sport - A) it has provided him with more confidence when navigating his day-to-day life B) no matter what the circumstance, at the end of a run, he's always happy. Alex's keen yet relaxed attitude towards racing and adventuring is truly refreshing and his pure love for spending time in nature shines bright throughout the 'sode. Ummm, car jacks & 50lbs TV stands? Why is Alex's family so damn cool?! Why does the ultra bug burn so deep? What is the Circumnavigation of Mt. Hood? What about the Wonderland Trail around Rainier? What is the Wonderland Trail? Today we sit down and chat with Constantine and Magpie about all the wonders of the Wonderland Trail. No irony is needed nor sarcasm sassed when we indeed say it is wonderful. We begin the show by instantly diving into a tangent, but then of course we use the upmost elegance and smooth tones to begin the multi-minute transition away from pure power into permits. We discuss all things Wonderland Permits. The use of Recreation.Gov to book ahead of time, the chance of walk up permits, luck of the draw with certain campsites, a "secret" way to hike without permits (NOTE: it is NOT saying don't use a permit, instead it mentions how to create an intense itinerary to avoid the permitted campsites). We discuss circles and how just because it is a circle does not mean it is easy. As the saying goes, "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice... well you aren't going to fool me again!" We shall not be fooled again, third time is the charm. Circles do not equate to easy. We discuss how to define beauty when literally 80% of the entire hike is gorgeous. We discuss the obstacles of the Wonderland Trail, including the Mowich River, the steep elevation gain and descent daily, snow travel, river crossings, suspension bridges, and most importantly injury prevention. We dive deep into this thought line as Magpie called the hike Day 3, no longer being able to safely continue forward without causing serious injury. When hiking with a romantic partner, friend, hiking buddy, comrade, trail family, whoever you may be hiking with, it is important to have these types of conversation beforehand. The conversations of "What If?" Nothing is more important than the safety of those around you while hiking. It is an immense privilege to be able to share in the happiness, love and togetherness of a trail, and also a responsibility. When hiking with others make a plan, read the situation, and act accordingly. We chat rookie mistakes, disappearing socks, thermal persuasion, finger-hills not being hills, and the constant curse of having piping plover legs. We chat hamburger feet, bridges that are not bridges, marmot smooching, pika picking, and beaver cuddling. We discuss the difference of being in thru-hiking shape and just "regular shape." We chat all things HYOH (do not even like writing out the term much less saying it... but we find ourselves in this tangent and have to unpack our feelings and then quickly tangent away before our emotions overheat). On our ramen rating review scale this hike gets a 4.5 out of 5 ramens. A mix between Roast Chicken and Creamy Chicken. Most importantly we: "Study Xyscience while being Rowdy and talking to Yerbae." Truly a wonderful trail, highly recommend the Wonderland Trail. FAVORITE QUOTES: "It is a privilege and responsibility when sharing the trail with others." "French kiss a marmot." (DISCLAIMER: DO NOT!) "The more we hike the less we know what we are doing." "I looked at my wrist for the time again... still don't have a watch." This week we journey onto the Wonderland Trail with author Christine Reed who discusses her book "Alone in Wonderland". We talk about her decision to uproot her life and become a self proclaimed "outdoor woman" and "dirt bag" to live in a van and hike some of America's most famous trails oftentimes solo. We discuss this decision, what she learned from her journey thus far, and what the future holds for her in both writing and in life.--------------------------------------------Christine's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ruggedoutdoorswomanLink to Alone in Wonderland: https://www.amazon.com/Alone-Wonderland-Christine-Reed/dp/173484180X/ref=sr---------------------------------------------Podcast's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/notinahuffpodcast/Please follow/subscribe to the podcast to get the new episodes when they come out each week and rate us on Apple Podcast and Spotify! :)Have a comment? Abram and I met on the Wonderland Trail. Three close friends and I overestimated our abilities and underestimated the terrain. We staggered into Mowich Lake too tired to cook dinner and unenthused by the thought of a wet sleeping bag inside of a bivouac sac. There emerged Abram. Arm outstretched from a flap of a gargantuan warm tent, a bowl of spaghetti in one hand and a cold beer in the other. “Want some?” he said. The trail karma was palpable. And so the story goes. The day Aspire Adventure Running shined its light on four idiots. In this conversation, we talk about how the connection of people + places becomes much deeper through physical exertion (say it with me: trail running). How creating a base camp with various route options, fully catered, lends itself to the best part of running (say it with me: everything about running except running). And how fitness really is the only barrier between the individual and exploration. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. #007 Meet Christine Reed - hiking guide, backpacker, rock climber, trail runner, van lifer and author. Her new book, Alone in Wonderland, on the surface is a story about her solo thru-hike of the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier. In truth, it's about so much more. In this episode we discuss:How discovering an Appalachian Trail forum led this unlikely outdoor enthusiast to long-distance backpacking in order to reinvent herself. Her challenges with asserting her independence while also searching for connection and a sense of community. The meaning of female independence and how her view became vastly different than what she was taught. Her insights on the loss of her mother and establishing a separate identity while also embracing and appreciating the ways her mom is still present in her own characteristics. How a newly diagnosed heart condition gave her a new perspective of her body and a level of self-acceptance and self-compassion for what she has been able to accomplish. How long-distance hiking can be a way to face yourself, be observant of your thoughts and elicit a full spectrum of emotions. How the book Alone in Wonderland was written for the reader so that they can feel less alone in their experience of being alone.Connect with Christine Reed on Instagram Order Alone in Wonderland here or if outside the US order here.Email Free: The Podcast at Info@InspiredLifeExpeditions.comConnect on Instagram Call and leave a message at 1 (216) 202-5050Music provided by “Farm” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
