This will be it's inaugaral year and is organized by the awesome Candice Burt and Destination Trails. In this episode, we talk about his mindset a month out and his training up until this point before being joined by Randy Stephenson, Phil's crew chief for this event. We also talk about the absolutely beautiful Route 66 Ultra put on by Heather and Marshall Ulrich, which is a race I HIGHLY recommend people check out! (My experience wasn't as beautiful but that had nothing to do with this amazing community of runners and the beautiful event they put on!) In this episode Steve Appleby talks about his real passion for everything running and particularly mountain running.  He started running back in the late 80s and hasn't stop since, with his only real injury (a broken ankle) as a result of being hit in the head by a branch during a night run!  He credits his lack of injuries to being consistent, to having recovery days and loves a bit of cold water after a hard run.   At almost 70 years old Steve credits running for his great physical and mental health - by being consistent but flexible with his running he hasn't let it become a stressor, its just something he fits into most days.  And if he can't run he'll do something else, like go for a walk to keep moving.   After listening to this episode it'll be hard to not head straight out the door and up a mountain trail for a run!   Candice Burt (who we spoke about on the episode) - https://www.instagram.com/runcandicerun/?hl=en Steve's Tips - Find something thats not too hard, you don't need to train like an elite athlete - just do it, make sure you have some rest/recovery days, find what you love about running, be consistent and follow the 10% rule. On and on and on for TWO HUNDRED straight days!! Through this challenge she faced every challenge imaginable- extreme cold, snow, thunderstorms, 100 plus degrees, pretty much every type of weather out there. More challenging, she battled her own mind- staying positive and emotionally neutral as she faced not only pain but the monotony of the day in day out grind. This episode is all about what she went through over the 200 days of 200 ultras and the strategies she used to stay consistent as she kept pushing the goal post farther and farther down the line. Finally, at 34 years old, after years of drinking and relying on prescription drugs, Taylor, took inventory of self and started choosing complete and honest sobriety.  Even tracking in the direction we want to go does not guarantee a destination. “Life always catches up with us,” Taylor says. For a long time he believed he was coasting through, unnoticed and unaccountable.  In 2016, Taylor got a phone call in the morning that no parent wants. Donavan, Taylor and his wife, Pam's, now 22 years old son, had been killed instantly in a car accident.   The whole family was heartbroken and lost. “Life experiences make us better, not worse,” Taylor will tell you honestly, “Life gives us all roadblocks.” Running is a different way to cope with discomfort. Running is a different way to process the pain instead of escape it. Those road blocks are no longer excuses. Life is gritty, raw, and real. Rather than cave into old habits, Taylor launched himself into encouraging recovery in others and leading by example.   Listen on: Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3XCm31n Apple Podcast: https://apple.co/3Dm6ClE   Follow along: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cameronrhanes Twitter: https://twitter.com/cameronhanes Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/camhanes/ Website: https://www.cameronhanes.com   Connect with Taylor Spike: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tspike2/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/taylor.spike.9/ Website: https://recoverystrong.com/   Special thanks to our sponsors. This week we are chatting with Dion Leonard, ultrarunner and author of the New York Times bestseller "Finding Gobi". Dion has received a lot of press for his book which is " the heartwarming story of Gobi, a stray dog he found on a race across the eponymous desert" which is something you need to check out, but he is also an incredibly accomplished athlete who has taken on some of the hardest challenges in the sport of ultra running. He jumped all in on this sport by running a handful of Stage Races around the world including the Marathon Des Sables and the Gobi March. In 2018 he finished second place in the Triple Crown of 200s, all three of Candice Burt's remarkable two mile races. Then in 2019, after winning the Delirious 200 miler in Australia, he decided to up the ante by participating in the "Leadman" and the "Grand Slam of Ultrarunning in same summer. That means he raced every endurance event in Leadville (both running and mountain biking) plus four of the biggest 100 milers. That has to go down as two of the craziest years an athlete has had in ultra running! In this episode we get into all of those stories as we explore Dion's growth both mentally and emotionally through pushing his limits. What drives him? What makes him persevere? How have his experiences shaped him into who he now is? Excited to share this one and honored to get to talk with Dion! He is quite inspiring and after you listen to him you will feel like you can go out and take on the world! BONUS: With this being the 200th episode of the show I felt like we needed to have an appearance from our very first podcast guest, my buddy Brady Manriquez. To say Candice has been busy over the last few years would barely scratch the surface. Not only does she organize, design and manage the Triple Crown of 200s (and many more races through her company Destination Trail), but she balances regular everyday life while striving to be the best athlete she can be. To say it bluntly, what she manages to accomplish with her time is INCREDIBLE!! We've featured a lot of episodes about running 200 mile races and if you loved those ones, this one will not dissappoint. Candice has experienced more people taking these on than anyone in the world and has the knowledge and insight to show what actually gets people to successfully make it to the finish line. She understands the strategies and mindsets that are necessary for racers to reach their goals and also shares the common mistakes she has seen to lead people to DNF. Last year she took on one of these events as an athlete (and won the whole thing!), The Delirious W.E.S.T. 200- a point to point 200 mile race in Australia. Through the race Candice faced all the highs and lows of a long endurance challenge and in this episode she shares what she learned from the experience. This was a super fun conversation that I hope you guys enjoy! Her knowledge of hallucinations and sleep deprivation is one of the more unique and intense things we have featured on the show and I'm hoping you take home some awesome nuggets of inspiration and information! He wasn’t a runner, I’d just met him days earlier but now he was standing right next to me ready to pace me the final 8 miles to the finish of this 100 mile race in the jungle and I knew I wanted him there but I was worried. I glanced at my legs, covered in mud and sweat and sticky with dreams that slowly seeped from my head where they had been born 6 years earlier settling slowly somewhere in the mud with my ego. I’d be getting my finish but not in the time or place I hoped for."

Super stoked this week to catch up with one of my favorite returning guests Candice Burt!! Candice is the race director of a few teeny tiny events......oh wait, she puts together extremely mind boggling 200 mile races??.....excuse me, did you say TWO HUNDRED FREAKING MILE RACES!! Through her company Destination Trails she has established the Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and the Moab 240 as some of the most exciting events in the ultrarunning community. These races are quickly rising in their popularity and have completely captured my imagination. The adventures, insane obstacles, beautiful views, brief touches with insanity each participant must go through over the course of 4 days in the wilderness has to be simply amazing! On top of her hours and hours of exploring, route finding, and organizing these events, Candice also finds time to be a highly accomplished ultra runner. Previously she has kicked some serious butt at events like Zion ultras, Cascade Crest, and multiple trips to the HURT 100. In this episode we chat about her experience running HURT 100 (one of the more challenging 100s) a few weeks ago. What caused her to DNF and why is it important for future events for her to be so open about not reaching her own expectations? We also touch upon the most bizarre ultrarunning mid-race obstacle of all time- a text alert alarming all of Hawaii that a ballistic missile was headed there way. Candice also shares some wonderful stories from the past year of putting on her 200 mile events. I know you guys will enjoy this week's show! This week we welcome ultra endurance athlete and writer Ryan Chukuske to the podcast! Ryan is in the middle of training for one of the premier endurance events in the country, the ultimate challenge, the Bigfoot 200. Since starting this podcast I've been utterly fascinated with each conversation I've had about these insane ultra runs (see the episodes with Melissa Sinclair and race director Candice Burt). Chatting with Ryan was no different. A 200 mile race is so mindblowingly crazy and I love hearing about various training strategies, mental and emotional preparation, and the stories that led these athletes to stepping up to the plate of one of the biggest challenges the sport of ultrarunning has to offer. In other words, I'm curious to find out if these 200 mile participants are simply out of their freaking minds! Ryan has added another twist into his story: he's an author who is planning on telling the story of this year's Bigfoot 200 from his perspective along with the perspective of other runners, crew members, and Candice, the race director. Pretty lofty goals that I'm excited to see play out! You can check out his past books "100 Miles of Thought: Finding Success Through Failure" and his sequel "Into the Darkness: A Runner's Revenge" on Amazon. Throughout this episode we really hear how Ryan discovered ultrarunning. He is also has a lot of experience running various races around the Midwest so we geek out about some lesser known events in Iowa and Minnesota (I'm looking at you Booneville Backroards Ultra south of Des Moines and Arrowhead 135 in International Falls on the Minnesota-Canada border) His upcoming book is called "Bigfoot 200: Because, You Know, Why the #@&% Not?" and I will definitely keep you guys updated on Ryan's race and when he plans on releasing the book. Huge thanks to Ryan for sharing all his adventures, training strategies and ambitions with us and HUMONGOUS (trying to think of a word bigger than huge....writing blogs about authors is intimidating....) shout of "Best of Luck" to him during the race in August. This week is all about long distance mountain biking as we chat with Scott Morris. Scott and his girlfriend Eszter Horanyi live nomadically on public lands and spend their days working remotely and exploring beautiful areas on their mountain bikes. Growing up in Utah he fell in love with mountain biking. As his rides got longer and longer and he overcame the "limits of daylight", he began "bikepacking". What in the world is bikepacking (besides a word that keeps trying to autocorrect....)??? Simple- It's backpacking with a mountain bike.....or mountain biking with a backpack. Essentially, you ride your mountain bike all day and then at night you throw out a sleeping bag and set up camp. The next morning, you set back out down the trail on your bike. Scott's bikepacked the Continental Divide Trail (the parts he was allowed to), explored the "bikeable 14ers", and started the first single track bikepacking event on the Arizona Trail, a journey from Mexico to Utah with a brief jaunt down and up some little geologic feature called the Grand Canyon. In this episode we explore a bunch of different topics. How did he get into this fringe sport, how did the AZT bikepacking race evolve, what life is like living nomadically from his camper van, how his GPS tracking software works (mentioned in episode #37 with Candice Burt), why public lands are so dang important, and which 14ers you can actually mountain bike up. Oh yeah....we also have the same uncle but aren't related. How this math equation works is beyond my tiny brain..... (My Uncle Joel Bown's episode: https://soundcloud.com/chris-ward-126531464/16-joel-bown-1971-endless) Enjoy guys! This week's Like a Bigfoot episode is, fittingly enough, with the creator of the Bigfoot 200 mile endurance, Candice Burt. In fact, she organizes, manages, and directs THREE 200 mile races: Bigfoot, Tahoe, and Moab (really 234 miles...but at that point what's 34 more!) Candice is a really thoughtful, funny, and happy person....for someone who jokingly received the moniker of "most masochistic race director in the world!" I was so grateful get to speak with her before she takes off into the wilderness planning the next big race. In this episode we talk about all the highs and lows of organizing such a gigantic event, how she keeps her runners safe, what people can expect from a 200 mile event, how to train for her races, and how 200 milers are a whole different BEAST than 100 milers. She really gave me an idea of the massive amount of work involved in putting on a successful ultra. Pretty amazing! We also discuss what it's like to 'fastpack' through isolated wilderness areas, what to do when you see mountain lions in the middle of nowhere, and how she handles running the brutal HURT 100 in Hawaii. Hope y'all enjoy this episode!! (Heading to North Carolina for a wedding so I gotta get my southern back!)
