The Wonderland Trail Just Got Better—Don't Miss Tami Asars' Updated Guide

Exploring Washington State

Prepare for an epic conversation with adventure, history, and quirky insights! In this episode of the Exploring Washington State Podcast, host Scott Cowan reunites with guest Tami Asars to discuss the second edition of her book, Hiking the Wonderland Trail. But this isn't just any trail story—it's a deep dive into one of Washington's most beloved trails, spanning 93 miles around the iconic Mount Rainier. So, what's new with the Wonderland Trail?  Is it the same grueling trek it's always been, or have hikers discovered new ways to conquer it? With over a dozen hikes, Tami reveals the triumphs and challenges of trekking this legendary trail. From "fastest known time" attempts to leisurely 14-day adventures with toddlers in tow, the Wonderland is as diverse as the people who hike it. Ever wonder how many times you can climb 22,000 feet of elevation without losing your mind? Tami has the answer and some sage advice: hike your own hike. But don't be fooled by those short daily mileage plans—every step on the Wonderland Trail demands stamina and respect, as the constant ascents and descents push even seasoned hikers to their limits. Want to know the history behind this backcountry gem?  Tami dives into the fascinating origins of the trail, which began as a ranger patrol route in 1915 to combat poachers and wildfires. At one point, there were plans to build a road around Mount Rainier's glaciers! Thankfully, those grand ideas evolved into the trail we know today—a wild escape consistently ranked among the top 10 hikes in the U.S. And here's a twist: Tami's connection to the Wonderland Trail runs deep—not just as a hiker, but on a personal level, with family memories tied to the park. Her husband even proposed to her there, and she shares a mystical tale of a bear sighting that coincided with her nephew's birth. It's clear this trail isn't just dirt and switchbacks—it's woven into her life story. If you're considering hiking the Wonderland Trail, Tami's book might be your new best friend.  With insights on permits (hello, tricky lottery system!), tips for pacing, and ways to avoid common trail pitfalls, she makes planning accessible and even fun. The second edition also offers extras like "stay-a-day" options and wildlife hotspots marked with a fun bear paw icon—perfect for spotting marmots and mountain goats along the way. Curious about life on the trail? Tami spills the beans on trail culture, from the joys of finding a trail family to the quirks of backcountry etiquette. Ever wondered how hikers communicate without cell service? Spoiler: they rely on apps like FarOut (formerly known as GutHook), which work offline and keep adventurers on track with GPS, comments, and waypoints. And if you think Tami's adventures end with the Wonderland Trail, think again. She's also a triple crowner, having completed the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail. Each journey brought revelations, but will she hike the PCT again? Please tune in to discover her surprising thoughts on future trails and whether the Pacific Northwest Trail might be next on her list. As the conversation winds down, Tami shares some of her favorite local spots in North Bend—like Huckstauder Coffee and Rio Bravo for lunch—and hints at exciting new projects, including an upcoming book on trail culture. Will we see Tami's Snoqualmie Region guide hit shelves next year? Only time will tell. With wit, humor, and a sprinkle of pumpkin spice debate (yes, it gets real), this episode captures the heart of what makes the Wonderland Trail—and hiking—so magical. Ready to disconnect, embrace the wilderness, and maybe even spot a bear or two? This episode will leave you itching to lace up your boots and hit the trail. And who knows? You might find yourself planning a trek sooner than you think.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Helinox, we are joined by Mary "Badass" Anderson. Never has a trail name been more fitting, Mary is the most badass hiker you've likely never heard of. With nearly 19,000 miles under her feet spanning six decades, with her first thru-hike taking place in 1981, Mary has not slowed down with her adventurous ways, as she swung by the studio on her to the Pacific Northwest Trail. Some of the highlights from today's interview include a wild winter SOBO thru-hike of the AT in 1985, just a handful of months after a major back surgery where her doctor told her to give up hiking. She followed her AT SOBO winter hike by immediately hopping over to the PCT, where she battled even more snow, and killed and ate a rattlesnake. Other feats include hiking all of the 4,000 footers in New England with her young son in the 90s, completing the CDT after hitting a new low in 2020, and now she's on a quest to finish all of the National Scenic Trails, with only a couple remaining. In short, Mary's story is one of a kind, you will enjoy today's chat. We wrap the show with a last call for applications for The Trek's new full-time role, a pair of beloved trail angels close their doors after 17 years serving PCT hikers, what music we would listen to on the way to rescue our significant others from a hostage situation, the triple crown of onomatopoeias, and Chaunce is very afraid of grizzlies. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek brought to you by Sawyer Products, we are joined by Brandon “Horsepower” Weis. With minimal prior backpacking experience, in 2021,  Brandon successfully completed the calendar year triple crown plus a thru-hike of the Arizona Trail. The next two years were not any more laid back, as he accrued more than 15,000 miles worth of backpacking over a three year span, including treks of the Benton MacKay Trail, Pinhoti, Oregon Desert Trail, Bigfoot Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Colorado Trail, Hayduke, and the Sheltowee Trace Trail. In addition to giving us an overview of these treks, Horsepower delights us with fun stories, including a terrifying encounter with a grizzly, sleeping in countless pit toilets, being asked to leave a restaurant due to his odor, accidentally drinking deet, and more.  We wrap the show with an overview of the first half of trail days, including how Badger is the world's biggest moron, the triple crown of our short section hike on the AT, and how many drinks constitute drinking. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Quoc “Double Magic” Nguyen. Double Magic might just be the most accomplished backpacker you've never heard of, along with being in the running for most interesting person on earth. His 23,000 miles of backpacking started with trails you know, like the Colorado Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail, and quickly evolved to trails you likely haven't including Norge pa Langs,  Via Dinarica, the Colorado Loop (a 1500 mile route he made up), a pair of epic excursions in Alaska, and trekking around the Aleutian Islands, a thing people don't do. This one is a like a snowball rolling downhill, it gets more momentum and becomes more dangerous the further it goes.  We wrap the show with some news of grizzlies getting reintroduced to the Cascades, the triple crown of cheeses, and a listener pumps our tires on our behalf. Summary In this conversation, I interview Nick Fowler, a renowned thru-hiker and FKT (Fastest Known Time) record breaker. We discuss Nick's experiences with thru-hiking and FKT attempts and dive into his record-breaking Pacific Crest Trail hike. Nick shares his training approach and the challenges he faced during his PCT FKT attempt, including health issues and a hurricane. The conversation highlights the determination and resilience required for long-distance hiking and FKT pursuits. We talk a little bit about my own experiences on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT). We also dive into the book that Nick wrote about the Pacific Northwest Trail record. Overall, Nick is just an amazing backpacker, thru hiker, and everything in between. He has written a book about his PNT FKT and plans to attempt more FKTs in the future. Sound Bites "I've always known about thru-hiking. In this episode, I had the pleasure of catching up with Nick Fowler for the third time. Now, you might remember Nick as the guy who conquered the Self-Supported Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Pacific Northwest Trail and the Ozark Trail in our previous chats. Back then, he was dealing with some pesky ankle injuries but was determinedly preparing for a shot at the Self-Supported FKT on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). "The secret to living is mastering the art of dancing with your fears..." This is a quote from Dyana Carmella's absolutely wonderful book "A Walk Thru Neverland" which is an incredibly insightful and entertaining story of her journey taking on the seldom thru-hiked Pacific Northwest Trail. More importantly, it's a story of self discovery through adventure. It's about a person seeking fulfillment, shedding layers of discontent, and discovering humanity. I absolutely LOVED the book and consider it to be one of the BEST adventure books I have EVER read!! I was very grateful to be able to chat with Dyana about this experience, both her hike and what it was like to tell this story. Truly can't wait for you to listen!! Lots of wonderful ideas, laughs, geeking out about films and a deep dive into what it truly means to "ask your fears to dance." A single footstep becomes two. A single mile becomes thousands. A single trail becomes many. A single goal becomes a life. A life becomes a home. Welcome back to the Off Trail Podcast after our hiatus, here is the reason why! Well... that and also we neglected our duties off being a podcast host, but let us focus on the positives and not the negatives here. Strap in for a wild episode, the first of its kind. A pure hour of Constantine rambles, blessed be the souls willing to undertake this journey. We chat trails being a life changing experience but the true power on taking the lessons off the trails. We talk from the heart and let the brain catch up to the words. We chat everything about the book Life in Pursuit. A project 2 years in the making, and one could even say 7 years from that very first step on the Appalachian Trail. We chat finding time in life to pursue your passions, the constant year of travel in 2022, and when the brain gets involved things becoming lost. We discuss the difficulties of compressing life into 288 pages and how we tend to speak "well" with a heavy emphasis on the quotations. We chat the desire to share this story and the reasons behind writing a book and get lost in tangents. We then go into what we call "the in-between" the very foundation of our book. Each trail has its own chapter but does not jump directly into the next one, instead showing the building blocks of life and choice to continue pursuing adventure along the trails. We chat failure daily, prevalence of popularity of the trail systems in the recent years, and the immense circles of life both physically on trail and metaphorically along the way. We then begin the reading of the book. Starting with the dedication, the preface, and then a few snippets of chapters. Stories told in a scraggily voice (completely on par with our announcements being at the worst timing) and stories that give a glimpse into a life in pursuit. We chat "I Am A Barbie Girl", old timer gospel, and the endless definition of the word nothingness. We ramble, get lost, and one could hope remain found. The Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, the Pacific Northwest Trail, the Ice Age Trail, the Arizona Trail, the Florida Trail, the Natchez Trace Trail, the Potomac Heritage Trail, the New England Trail, and the behemoth of them all the North Country Trail make up the National Scenic Trails. Life in Pursuit becomes less about the physical activity of hiking and becomes a look into a life of obsession. The trials and obstacles of a life lived for the pursuit of the next trail. Stories, moments, and challenges of each hike are told through the lens of a perception that changes into a reality. The trail has an end point, the mind does not. When the trail ends the person continues to change. A trail is the physical manifestation of a journey. This book is the emotional manifestation of the endless journey of life, the endless journey of a life in pursuit. To everyone that continues to make this life special, thank you! Welcome back to the Off Trail Podcast! Today we sit down to chat with the one and only, Coyote. We begin the show by learning about labels and the growth of breaking free of defining oneself in the singular. We learn about Coyote bein a chef, a thru-hiker, a artist and a musician. Then almost instantly we dive deep into the growth through hiking and just as importantly the growth found and taken off trail from hiking. We talk hard labor jobs, percentages of life off trail being too high within the grind mindset, and the more Coyote hiked the more he craved more life not only on trail but off. We chat Coyote seeking more multi-dimensional life within his pursuit of thru-hiking and more generally a life will lived. We chat weighted returns on time, plateaus of growth, and unlocking new levels of fitness. We chat the importance of becoming obsessed with thru-hiking but finding balance within the obsession. We chat the importance of realizing there is a life off trail, and it doesn't have to be singular, it can be a full life. We quickly touch on the Grand Enchantment Trail, the Pacific Northwest Trail, and the Northern New Mexico Loop with a quick shout out to the legend himself, Brett Tucker. We chat the questions that arise when the trail ahead becomes undefined, we chat the similarities and differences of the words adventure and thru-hike, and we dive into the very definition of what the term "thru-hike" can mean. We break the chains of a classical definition and theorize the change that is almost never chosen but always found. We discuss singular goal mindsets and the vast varieties within, we dip our toes into the word "purism" and unpack all the baggage associated inside it. We debate the undefined line in the sand that defines a purist and where it begins and where it ends. No answer found, only theories provided. We chat the Idaho Centennial Trail. We chat skipping a section and the choice that was never a choice. We chat early season Sawtooth Mountains and swelled creeks. We dive into quitting the ICT 4 times and coming back over and over again. We go further into the feelings and perceived need to return to a trail. We unpack shame and embarrassment in choosing the not only right choice but only safe choice and the danger that can arise from being consumed in the accomplishment mindset. We talk no matter the hiker, that if you hike long enough and far enough the inevitable decision that all will be faced with. We chat respect for hikers that chose to not continue, and when going home becomes the right choice. We discuss the filter of social media and the dangers that lie within. We chat the Mogollon Rim Trail and the growth in a discomfort chosen. On the flip side we chat the growth found in comfort chosen. The comfortable choice sometimes becomes the most uncomfortable and the most difficult. We chat becoming a cat in the rain, making plans A and B, and learning to read topo lines. I incorrectly define what dead-reckoning is and we talk the healthy vs the unhealthy. We compare the bodies reaction to health in and health out, and the weird pride that hikers find in eating unhealthy diets. We chat becoming an athlete, no higher responsibility than life itself, and the truest heroes of them all, the people living regular lives. It gets weird and it gets deep, an absolutely wonderful episode. Thank you so much Coyote for sharing with all of us. What is the Pacific Northwest Trail? Today we sit down for a chat with co-hosts Magpie and Constantine, and well if you have been listening to our most recent episodes, you know how this begins... with an energy drink review! The energy gets explosive with "C4", the one that we were too scared to try on the previous episode, but as we cant abide waste, we guzzle down this radioactive concoction of liquid Peach Mango drink, and once again test our hearts constitution to survive the episode. After a few sips, a few tangents, we dive into the basis of this episode, all things Pacific Northwest Trail. Just like the Peach Mango flavor in our mouths, we try and discern the flavor of this trail for you. A throwback as Constantine and Magpie hiked this back in 2019, it is time to put their memories to the test! We chat elevation, camping, mileage, trail angels & trail devils. We break the discussion into states and resupply points, using the power of the energy drink and our foggy memories to try and accurately paint a picture of the PNT. We discuss bushwhacks, the Veg-O-Matic, permits, food carries, animal encounters, and the flavor of each town and section. We chat the "mystique" of the PNT and the reputation it has. We chat Glacier National Park, the loose definitions of what constitutes a town, alternates available, cheating if you do not take the official route of Bogachiel through Olympic National Park (not actually we just have many feelings about this piece of trail). We give a few shout outs to Horsepower who is out there stepping off the miles now and meeting all the wildlife and experiences the PNT has to offer. We chat finding a bushwhack where none have bushwhacked before! We chat bluffs, how not all beaches are created equal, and going for a unexpected swim deep in the ocean. We wrap the show with our newly patented (not actually patented) Ramen Rating Review! The PNT gets a stellar average of 4.9 Ramens! Our highest rated ramen review yet. Magpie gave it a FULL Creamy Chicken ramen of 5 stars, while Constantine still believing no trail can be fully Creamy Chicken gave it a 4.9 rating. More accurately meaning you made a Creamy Chicken Ramen but added a tad bit too much water, and didn't get all the flavoring out of the package. FAVORTIE QUOTES: "It slices, it dices, it is the Veg-O-Matic!" "Stay Cognizant TM." "My favorite trail, perfect mix." To learn more about who we are click the link below: ElevenSkys.com

Kisha in her own words:   “I grew up in Virginia, a gymnast and cheerleader, playing softball and soccer. I knew I was bound to do something special, but I didn't know what.   When it comes to my career, I'm often called a ‘bad-ass.' As the Managing Director of Portland's Artists Repertory Theatre, I feel at home on a stage in front of thousands of people. When it comes to spending time outside, however, I wasn't what you would call an “outdoors woman.”   I didn't camp. I didn't spend hours in the woods. Yet, when I moved to Portland, I found a love I didn't know existed: my love of hiking. Days spent exploring all of the swimming holes and waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest transitioned into my first solo trip to Reykjavнk, Iceland.    I scuba-dived, hiked through Gullfoss, Skуgafoss, Hengifoss, and fiingvellir, and I HIKED UP AND THROUGH A GLACIER! Me! All 240 pounds of me.    I became a superhuman on that trip. I'm a fat, Black woman with Lupus who hikes glaciers, mutherf*ckers! My outdoor exploration unlocked something in me. After that, I was unstoppable!   When I returned home, I wanted to hike all the time. I bought sturdy hiking shoes. I started reading outdoor magazines, watching Eco-Challenge and going into every outdoor store. I was inspired…but I never saw anyone that looked like me.   I didn't let that stop me. I've been moving since, continuing to have solo journeys and proving to myself time after time that just because I look the way I do, doesn't mean I'm not strong and powerful - nor does it mean that these adventures are not for me!”   “I'm undertaking my biggest challenge yet. I am hiking the Pacific Northwest Trail, from the Continental Divide to the Pacific Ocean. I am hiking to change the narrative. It matters to me to share my journey because not only did I not think I couldn't do this as a child, but I never even knew stuff like this existed.   I know my story will have bigger resonance with others. I know I can be the representation I never saw. I want to offer an invitation to a journey of self-discovery and an introduction to a lifelong passion.  And I hope we can do this together. — Kisha Jarrett”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons.    Support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. She evaded Wolves, stayed clear of Grizzly Bears, endured the most extreme of weather and landscape conditions. Dyana Carmella joins America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres, to complete her emotional and inspirational journey through 1200 miles and 71 days solo on the Pacific Northwest Trail. Though she doesn't want her mother to hear this, she now admits that she should've died multiple times. The power of the human spirit is greater than we even know until we are tested and have no option to fail. We are so used to our comfortable first world life, with all the amenities, that we are never faced with the obstacles that will truly show us the great feats that humans are capable. Once you tap into your potential, you will never fear anything again. She found her appreciation for simple things like food, at one point in her journey having ran out and forced to starve and only live off wild berries in the middle of nowhere. She reminds us that we don't need much to live a happy life. On the contrary, its the gluttony and over indulgence that actually makes us unhealthy and unhappy. Mother Nature is real, her energy omniscient and power unwavering. Once you become one with that source, it will change your life forever. Have you ever camped in the woods? Not in an RV or hotel, but down and dirty in a tent? Most people would have trouble for one night. Dyana Carmella did it alone, for 71 days and 1200 miles, through uncharted wilderness. She shares her emotional and inspirational story with America's Podcaster, Kurt Caceres. Living with Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Snakes and other wildlife. Overcoming the most extreme and unexpected weather conditions, from flash floods, snow storms and lightning. She hiked the Pacific Northwest Trail, one of only 20 people to do it that year, one of only 3 women that year, and she was the only to do it solo. There is no trail. No map. Just using an old fashioned compass and navigating with the stars, she tells us that the girl she was when she started, is not the woman she is now once she completed. She is quick to say that humans when forced to face fear, with no other option, will find things deep inside themselves they never knew possible. Humans will find what we are truly capable of. "Imagine what you could accomplish if fear wasn't an option", says Dyana. Everyday we often times choose the path of fear and run the other way, but Dyana didn't have that choice, and Mother Nature put her to the highest of tests. Three times she remembers wanting to quit more than any other, pushed to the brink of exhaustion, as close to death as is humanely possible. Knees filled with fluid and swelling from to many days of walking, her feet rotting from weeks of moisture, she is about to face one of the biggest feared regions of the journey, "The Lions Head Bushwack". Diversity on the trail is a heavy, but important subject. It's impossible to do this subject justice in the span of an hour long podcast, but it's a conversation worth having nonetheless. Our correspondents share their thoughts about the diversity -or lack thereof- that they've encountered on trail.  Our hikers also ponder ways the community can encourage under-represented groups to get onto the trail.  Admittedly- our correspondents largely follow the demographics of the thru-hiking community at large- which is to say young and white. Though one of our hikers is visiting from across the pond and another is gay- and we've got more female correspondents than male when the trail skews the other way. But in terms of racial diversity, there's none.  We were fortunate to get the input of Elsye "Chardonnay" Walker, who's one of the few (if not the only) black woman to hike the triple crown.   She shares her take on these same questions, which offers some interesting contrast to the other stances offered in this episode.   Lastly, we get an update from Jeffrey "Legend" Garmire, who's on the tail end of his Great Western Loop journey, a 6,875-mile footpath across the western half of the USA. The path, popularized by Andrew Skurka, links five existing trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, Grand Enchantment Trail, & Arizona Trail, as well as some route finding through the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. Many a'hiker trash dream of completing the triple crown of backpacking, to hike the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trail. To do so over the course of one's life is a notable feat. Doing this in a single year is bananas, which is exactly what episode 7's guest, Jeffrey "Legend" Garmire, accomplished. In this episode, we go down the rabbit hole learning everything that went into Legend's Calendar Triple including daily mileage, toughest days on trail, gear used, and best stories from the adventure.  He also talks about his Pacific Northwest Trail thru-hike and conquering all of the 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado. In Episode 34, Alex "Money Shot" Maier talks about his film "A Sense Of Direction" which documents his travels on the Pacific Northwest Trail in the summer of 2015.  Alex chose the PNT for his first thru-hike (and first hiking film) to explore one of the newest trails in the National Scenic Trail system - which earned the status in 2009.  Only a few hundred backpackers have thru-hiked the 1200 mile trail to date, and all have had the fortune to experience the PNT while it is still in its infancy. In the podcast, Alex talks about the early history of the Pacific Northwest Trail, the many scenic firetowers and peaks on the hike, life as a PNT thru-hiker, and his favorite (and not so favorite) moments on the Trail.  He also updates us on his latest long distance hike, and hints at a release date for his next major hiking film.
