In honour of Black History Month, we're revisiting one of our favourite episodes in Glass and Out history, featuring the legendary Willie O'Ree. Back in 2018, host Aaron Wilbur and former co-host Kelvin Cech were lucky enough to be joined by O'Ree for an in-person interview as he shared some incredible stories about his journey to the NHL, the many challenges he faced along the way, how he feels about the current state of hockey, and what can be done to create a more diverse game. Along with being the first Black player in NHL history, O'Ree was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018 in the builder category for all the work he's done on creating a more inclusive game. Also in 2018, the NHL instituted the annual Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award in his honour, to "recognize the individual who has worked to make a positive impact on his or her community, culture or society to make people better through hockey." In addition, we were joined by the first woman President of the NHL Coaches' Association, Lindsay Artkin. Under Artkin's leadership, the NHLCA has been incredibly proactive in playing a role in creating a more inclusive hockey culture and in providing women and non-white coaches an equal opportunity to pursue a career in hockey. These initiatives include the Female Coaches Development Program and BIPOC Program. Listen in as we revisit a conversation with one of the legends of the game and a woman who is leading the charge in creating a more inclusive game.

Biff and Jacques chat the Great Willie O’Ree. The Bruins, a little late to the dance, are finally retiring Willie’s #22 he wore in 1958 when he broke the color barrier. Biff tells of a personal interaction with Willie in Santa Monica, CA a few years back. Biff also points out while Willie’s number being retired most likely was a positive step brought on by the BLM movement, the NHL has a long way to go to make their “Hockey Is For Everyone” program a true outreach. Willie O’Ree joined Rick Ralph and Paul Edmonds on the Afternoon Ride. They discussed his book “Willie: The Game-Changing Story of the NHL's First Black Player”, his first training camp with the Boston Bruins, meeting Jackie Robinson, growing up in New Brunswick and his road to becoming the first black hockey player in the NHL.
Willie O'Ree joins Steve and AJ to discuss his new memoir, Willie, and share stories from his playing days!
If you are a hockey fan, you probably know the story of Willie O’Ree. In 1958, he became the first black player to skate in an NHL game when his Boston Bruins faced the Montreal Canadiens. The feat wasn’t heralded at the time and Mr. O’Ree’s NHL career lasted just 45 games, though he would go on to play professional hockey until 1979. Following his retirement, he remained far from the public eye until 1996. At that time the league was being run a new regime that was focused on expanding the game into new markets and exposing the sport to different demographics. In O’Ree, the NHL saw a perfect ambassador who had first-hand experience to drive an inclusive message. The rest of his life story is remarkable as well, from an ancestor believed to have found freedom through an early form of the Underground Railroad to his own direct path navigating the segregated southern United States as a baseball prospect…and there is much more. We are pleased to have him join us to discuss his new book Willie – The Game Changing Story of the NHL’s First Black Player, written with Michael McKinley.
What can we say about today’s 1v1 guest? He was the first black athlete to play in the NHL, he’s been an ambassador for the NHL for the past 30 years, he was just inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, he’s been in two documentaries and has just released his book "Willie". Kwame goes 1v1 with icon Willie O’Ree. Wille talks about his parents and his two siblings who helped shaped his life. He also talks about his relationship with commissioner Gary Bettman and all the lives he’s been able to touch. He just turned 85 years young so learn something new about Willie O’Ree.
Amid protests following the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota. the Boston Bruins are one of several NHL teams yet to make a statement, which is troubling considering the legacy of inclusion in hockey paved by Willie O'Ree. Host Ian McLaren shares some reactions from around the hockey world, and urges our favorite hockey team to do better. Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. 1-19-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the program by paying his respect to former Yankees and Angels pitcher Eli Grba, the one time PBS guest who passed away this week at the age of 84. John then brings up what he feels is an overemphasis of two way MLB players, basically a glorification of a position player who will pitch regularly in mop up situations. We are likely to not even see a Shohei Ohtani like scenario again in the sport. Have fans and the media today forgot about Wilt Chamberlain? James Harden scoring 40 points a game is nice, but please stop making like it has never happened before. Speaking of not getting attention that is deserved, the NHL should make January 18th Willie O'Ree day and make every team pay homage to the first black player in the history of the National Hockey League. All that plus a preview of the NFL Conference Championship games.

In 1958 Canadian Willie O'Ree broke the colour barrier in the National Hockey League. Willie O'Ree was picked to play for the Boston Bruins in the NHL despite suffering a devastating eye injury earlier in his career. The NHL was then made up of just six professional teams based in Canada and the United States. O'Ree had to face horrific racial abuse from both fans and some players when he took to the ice. Alex Last spoke to Willie O'Ree about his memories of being the first elite black ice hockey player.
