In this interview, Randall Maggs discusses the origins of Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems and the long process of researching and writing the book.He reflects on his early awareness of legendary goalie Terry Sawchuk in Winnipeg, the moment that brought him back to hockey, and the years he spent gathering stories from players, referees, and fans of the Original Six era.Maggs explains his goal of giving Sawchuk a chance to “speak for himself,” the challenges of understanding a complex personality, and the influence of family, loss, and immigrant experience on Sawchuk's life.He also shares insights from his own hockey background, his brother's professional career, and his connections to communities across Canada. This conversation offers rare insight into the craft behind Night Work and the enduring legacy of Terry Sawchuk.Maggs also references a song by a Canadian songwriter which helped inspire his work. Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems is an intriguing poetry collection describing the life and professional hockey career of goalie Terry Sawchuk. The poems in this collection examine many aspects of Sawchuk's difficult life. They explore his courage, resilience, and character. Sawchuk's enigmatic life on ice is introduced in the epigraph by Robert Frost. The collection of poems in Night Work is divided into eight sections exploring Sawchuk's early hockey career, Ukrainian roots, rocky married life, hockey triumphs, waning NHL career, and his death. This collection of poetry is a landmark work which will definitely appeal to hockey fans. It will also attract those readers who want to understand his roots in the Ukrainian-Canadian community, and how individuals like Sawchuk adapted to their society. In the second half of our conversation with wrestling journalist, historian and author Greg Oliver, we move away from the squared circle and onto the ice.Greg talks about his other great sporting obsession, hockey, and how it has shaped a huge part of his writing career. We get into his books on goaltenders, enforcers and some of the more unusual characters in hockey history, as well as his latest book, Game Day.Much like his wrestling work, Greg's hockey writing is really about the people behind the reputations. He discusses interviewing players such as Terry Sawchuk and Wade Belak, looking beyond fighting and statistics, and trying to understand the lives and personalities that can disappear behind sporting mythology.Along the way, we talk about hockey fighting, masculinity, colourful characters, strange stories and why the most interesting part of sporting history is often the bit that never made the box score. We're back each and every month for another deep dive into the world of shorts and spandex. There's a chill in the air to be sure, not sure if it's because the temps are dipping and the darkness comes early these days or if it's because your favourite co-hosts are talkin' Leafs! That's right, we've got the 1966-67 Toronto Maple Leafs on the slate tonight, the last Toronto squad to hoist Lord Stanley. Lead by legends like Ron Ellis, Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, George Armstrong, Red Kelly and donut pitchman Tim Horton, with Johnny Bower and Terry Sawchuk between the pipes and the great Punch Imlach behind the bench, this squad vanquished the hated Habs in six games! Then we talk about the surge of youthful exuberance in the league as the Habs and Ducks are on heaters and names like Celebrini and Bedard are near the top of the points race. It's refreshing ain't it? Also, the your Winnipeg Jets go oh-fer California and the squad down in St. Louis is singing the Blues! In period three, we've got a huge PWHL announcement and we kick off a new team in our Score Six Pack attack! All this and trio of great Canadian tunes, eh!
Sports Cards Live episode 287, Part 1. Jeremy sits down with Joe Poirot to kick off the night, then Leighton Sheldon jumps in for a deep dive on the headline sale of the 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth that just hammered around 4M after a prior 7.2M comp. We unpack why rare does not always equal iconic, how schedule issues compare to Goudey Ruths, and what “value” means when a card trades so infrequently. From there we zoom out to the auction landscape: shill bidding realities, house bidding on behalf of consignors, and reserves—how they work, where they are disclosed, and how buyers can protect themselves. Jeremy shares a Classic Auctions mail day, completing a 1952 Parkhurst “flight” with Rocket Richard alongside Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, and Tim Horton, plus a fun pickup of game-used Mats Sundin gloves. We also touch on Probstein moving off eBay to SNYPE, Fanatics vault strategies, and using Card Ladder to sanity-check comps. What you'll learn Why the Baltimore News Ruth can lag iconic appeal despite extreme rarity How auction house reserves and house bids can affect bidding behavior Practical tactics to limit shill exposure set a ceiling price and stick to it How “flight collecting” works as a middle path between set and type collecting Vintage hockey targets in 1951–52 Parkhurst and why they resonate Learn more about your ad choices. Steve welcomes Terry Sawchuk, founder of Sawchuk Wealth, to break down what's really driving the gold market and the state of the global economy in 2025. They discuss why the popular story of a “debasement trade”, institutions fleeing fiat currency, may not be true, and how much of gold demand is actually driven by central banks, particularly China. Sawchuk also highlights that over 50% of global transactions are still settled in U.S. dollars, and the dollar's dominance has actually increased. Looking ahead, they explore the bull market's resilience, the likelihood of a short-term 5–10% correction, and the global shift from a petroleum-based economy to one centered on energy and computing power, a transition linked to recent Middle East peace deals and the waning era of the Petro-Dollar.
