Too often, when we are unhappy in our jobs, we think that changing jobs will solve the problem. As a result, we spend countless hours scouring job boards for a new opportunity (which depending on your level of success could leave you feeling worse about yourself and your professional value). In today's episode I will share why that is the number 1 mistake to avoid if you are unhappy in your career. I have personally spent more hours of my life searching jobs boards for another opportunity that would allow me to escape a job I was unhappy in… in effect.. at those low points, I was simply looking for an escape plan… largely because I still had bills to pay and didn't fully understand at the time how to own my value and position myself for the types of roles that would light me up because they were based on what I was naturally good at and interested in… so here are my 5 mistakes to avoid. Don't simply change jobs - first identify the root cause of your unhappiness. Thinking clinical practice is all you can do – There are a whole range of non-clinical skills you gain in the course of your clinical career which can be translated to other roles more aligned with your interests. Believing you are the problem – This calls for lots of introspection... and accepting that there isn't a one size fits all model for health professions graduates. Focusing on hard skills only – more and more organisations are recognising the value of soft skills. Communication, teamwork, empathy. If you think of clinical practice context, most people if given the choice, would choose the doctor or nurse who was kind, patient, who listened to their problem and truly cared over one who had the fanciest equipment or better technical knowledge. Not recognising the value of a personal brand – If you want to position yourself for growth-oriented roles, especially non-clinical ones, you need to think of yourself as a brand – and have some degree of presence online, ensuring that your public-facing content aligns with how you want to be perceived or the value you have to deliver.   Eager for More? They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Brad Riley identifies that the hardest thing in growing a small business is navigating through tough times and maintaining perseverance. He emphasizes that challenges can take many forms, and what seems tough today may look different in the future. He believes that understanding and learning from both successes and failures, as well as leveraging resources and insights from others, is crucial to overcoming these hurdles and achieving sustainable growth. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Brad Riley mentioned Annie Duke as a significant influence. Known for her work on decision-making under uncertainty, her insights have likely impacted Brad's approach to managing challenges and strategizing in his business. Annie Duke's books, such as Thinking in Bets, emphasize critical thinking and probabilistic decision-making, which are highly relevant for navigating complex business environments. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Brad Riley emphasized leveraging the internet to learn from others' journeys. While he didn't recommend specific resources, general suggestions include the podcasts "How I Built This," "The Tim Ferriss Show," and "Smart Passive Income," along with online courses from platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy. You can also explore YouTube channels such as Gary Vaynerchuk and Stanford Graduate School of Business for valuable insights. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Brad Riley recommends using online learning platforms to build skills, leveraging social media for networking and marketing, and utilizing project management tools like Trello or Asana to streamline team collaboration. Additionally, analytics tools such as Google Analytics can drive data-informed decisions. These resources collectively support efficient growth and operational scaling for small businesses. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Brad Riley advises his day-one self to stay resilient, reassuring that "it's okay, you'll be okay." He emphasizes the importance of perseverance, noting that tough times are part of the journey and that the challenges faced today will look different down the road. His key message: hang in there and trust that things will work out. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Join Joe McDonald as he reads and expands on the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, offering deeper understanding and practical advice for those on their recovery journey. In this Step 3 AA session, Joe addresses the common reluctance many of us have to learn from the experiences of others. As humans, we often insist on making our own discoveries, even if those discoveries lead us into painful and dangerous situations. Joe emphasizes that for those of us in recovery, this insistence can sometimes be fatal. Many who come into the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have experienced immense suffering, but not all survive to tell their story.Joe offers a powerful message to those still struggling: as someone who has walked this path, he can share the pitfalls and dangers that others may not need to experience if they are willing to learn from those who came before them. However, if someone insists on having their own experience, Joe promises to be their friend and companion through the process, guided by the spirit that brought them together in recovery. This wisdom is a cornerstone of both Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the Interactive Step Experience (ISE). The recovery process is about community, learning from each other, and offering guidance to those who may still be struggling. Joe's message highlights the importance of accepting help and learning from the shared experiences of others to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering. For more content, please like, comment, and share. Every father needs the right tools to raise his kids well, and Kent Evans likes to use the analogy of a Swiss Army Knife. His main blades include asking thoughtful questions, seeking wisdom from others, and staying rooted in God's Word. Tune in now to discover why anger isn't an effective parenting strategy—and what you should do instead.    Key Takeaways   Be curious and seek wisdom from the men you know.  Your boys need to hear you acknowledge your weaknesses and imperfections.  Don't connect your apology to your child's behavior.  You don't need to have a sex talk with your son; you need to have an 8-10 year conversation. As dads, most of our anger is not righteous anger.   Kent Evans   Kent Evans is the Executive Director and co-founder of Manhood Journey, a ministry that helps dads become disciple-makers. He's a Christian speaker and author of three books. Kent and his wife, April, have been married for 29 years and have five sons.    Key Quotes   24:36 - "Odds are, the vast majority of things that make you angry are unbiblical, unwise, and unproductive. Let's go explore those together and see what God's Word has to say about it. Because for me, I have discovered over time that there there is a way to look at life through a far less angry lens and to be able to call my anger out when it happens in a way that's more healthy, albeit sometimes more painful. And I just hope I can get some dads to join me on that that journey. Because frankly, we hear from dads all the time who say their number one struggle is anger." 32:51 - "Let all, not some, let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Anger is not to be managed. It is not to be controlled per se, although we should have control over our mouth and our spirit. Anger is to be put away. As we look at it, it's a very challenging topic because our culture and our modern era and our access to news that doesn't matter. Proverbs 16, whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty and he who rules his spirit, then he who takes a city. Do you have governance over your spirit? Can you rule your spirit? Can I rule my spirit or does my spirit rule me? And we just find anger lurking in the shadows so often, almost every day."   Links from Today's Conversation   Apply to join the Fall 2024 DadAwesome Accelerator Cohort: Email awesome@dadawesome.org to learn more   Manhood Journey Timothy Keller Books The Anger Free Dad Course Father on Purpose Podcast Kent Evans Books   Connect with dadAWESOME   Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

Richard Parker, an expert in acquiring businesses, shares his journey of transforming business aspirations into reality. After facing a crossroad in his personal life, he realized the importance of making decisions based on uncertainty and the worst-case scenario. He emphasizes the value of buying a good business at a great price, rather than starting a risky startup. Richard also discusses the importance of humility and surrounding yourself with people who are smarter and more skilled. This episode offers valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners.   About the guest: Richard Parker is an expert in acquiring businesses and has transformed business aspirations into reality for over 30 years. He has acquired 13 companies and one co-investment, ranging from $50,000 to over $200 million. Richard's program, "How to Buy a Good Business at a Great Price," has empowered and guided prospective business buyers in 80 countries around the world. He has been featured in top-tier publications such as Forbes and The New York Times and has written over 300 published articles showcasing his authority in the field. Richard also served as a mentor in the Dalio family office, working with Ray Dalio's son and imparting the art of acquiring businesses.   Resources: website: www.RichardParker.com  Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richparker1/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RichardParkerDiomo  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/richardparkerdiomo/  Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@richardparkerdiomo  Timestamps: 2:44 Facing crossroads in business and personal life 7:30 Acquiring a business after stock market investment went bust 10:11 There are no guarantees with a Startup  14:00 An MBA doesn't mean that you know how to become a business owner 16:13 When you don't have options, it is incredibly easy to make decisions 18:11 Thinking outside the box  20:08 Mitigating risks 26:25 What is the mission plan? 29:25 Startups are like adding jet fuel to the economy 35:21 Overcoming ego  41:49 Learn about yourself by asking questions  44:50 Embrace being wrong 45:20 A Small habit that has made a difference 47:55 Linking what you do to what you can do for the community 51:10 Connect with Richard Parker   Key Takeaways: Richard Parker's personal crossroads, including his decision to separate and get a divorce, served as a catalyst for change and prompted him to evaluate his life and make important decisions. Acquiring existing businesses can be a more practical and lucrative option compared to starting a startup, as it provides immediate income and the potential for growth through acquisitions. When faced with uncertainty, it is important to determine the time available to make a decision and allocate probabilities to potential outcomes to make a better decision. Richard emphasizes the importance of humility and surrounding oneself with people who are smarter and more skilled, as this leads to personal and professional growth. Successful business owners often focus on building a great business or empowering others rather than solely pursuing financial gain.   Connect with Daphna: www.daphnahorowitz.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/daphnahorowitz/  https://www.facebook.com/PEACSolutions    Did you enjoy this episode of Leadership Live podcast?
