We are revisiting the AI-copyright interplay for the first time in nearly three years. Copyright remains very relevant to our sphere of interest, not least because the EU AI Act specifically points at EU copyright law with regards to training data and transparency requirements for AI models.Malcolm Bain is an English solicitor and Spanish abogado. He has worked as an Information Technology and Intellectual Property lawyer over the last 20 years, with a specialisation in technology licensing, open source software and content, technology transfer and privacy. Health data affects artificial intelligence in important ways. Camille Nebeker, Ed.D., M.S., UC San Diego, explains why ethically sourced data is foundational to building trustworthy, AI-ready health data repositories. Nebeker examines how ethical sourcing applies across the full data lifecycle, including consent, governance, transparency, data quality, privacy, stewardship, and community engagement. She also shows how ideas from supply chain management and value sensitive design help teams identify ethical tensions and improve decision-making. This work helps explain why ethics cannot be added at the end of AI development and points toward more accountable data practices that support public trust and stronger downstream performance. #398: The Lucrative AI Training Opportunity for Freelance Writers

High-Income Business Writing

A lot of writers hear the word "training" and picture a conference room full of strangers, a slide deck, and a formal curriculum. That's not what I'm talking about here. The training opportunity most freelancers are sitting on is much smaller, much more personal, and already happening inside your existing client relationships. You're just doing it for free, and you probably haven't recognized it for what it is. In this episode, I break down what AI training actually looks like at the freelancer level: one-on-one coaching with a key contact, a focused small-team engagement, an ongoing embedded arrangement. And I spend real time on the objection that stops most writers before they even get started: "I don't know enough to teach anyone." The knowledge gap between you and your clients is bigger than you think. And the clients who need this help most aren't looking for a guru. They're looking for someone a few steps ahead who already knows them and their business. What You'll Learn Why the training work you're already doing informally is worth real money What a realistic training engagement looks like at the freelancer level, from a simple coaching series to a small team workshop Why you don't need to be an AI expert to deliver real value to your clients right now How to think about pricing when you're selling a transformation, not hours Why training engagements have a natural tendency to open doors to other, deeper work with the same client What to say to a current client to start this conversation without it feeling like a pitch Key Ideas & Takeaways 1. You're already doing this work. If you've ever spent time on a call walking a client through an AI tool, troubleshooting their outputs, or explaining why their results came out generic, that's training. You've been delivering it informally for free. The move is to recognize it, name it, and package it as a real engagement. 2. Training doesn't mean a room full of strangers. At the freelancer level, training usually means one key contact at a client you already know, or a small team of two to four people. It's focused, practical, and built around their specific tools and content types. A coaching series of four to six sessions is a perfectly complete engagement. No slide deck required. 3. You don't need to be an expert. To a third grader, an eighth grader is a really big, smart kid. You don't need to know everything about AI. You need to know more than your client does right now, and for most of your clients, that bar is lower than you think. What makes you specifically valuable isn't generic AI knowledge. It's your understanding of their content, their industry, and what good looks like for them. 4. Price toward the outcome, not the hours. A training engagement isn't worth your hourly rate times the number of sessions. It's worth the value of the transformation you're helping the client achieve: time saved, quality improved, risk reduced. Start by asking what it's worth to your client to have a reliable, on-brand AI workflow in place. Then price toward that number. 5. Training gets you closer to the work. When you're embedded in a client's process, you see things you wouldn't see from the outside: where quality control is breaking down, where the content strategy is unclear, where editorial judgment is missing before content ships. That proximity naturally surfaces new ways to help, without any pushing required. Action Steps Think of one current client who has asked you AI-related questions in the last few months. That's your starting point. Write down what you've already been helping them with informally. That's the foundation of your first training offer. Sketch out what a four to six session coaching series would look like for that client, built around their specific content types and workflows. Think through the outcome: what would it be worth to that client to have a reliable, on-brand AI process in place? Use that to anchor your pricing. Draft one paragraph describing the offer in plain language: what it covers, how long it runs, what the client walks away with. Keep it simple and concrete. Have one conversation. Tell a current client you've noticed they've been asking AI questions and ask if it would be useful to formalize that a bit.

Most people jump into AI too quickly. They open ChatGPT, type a question, and expect a perfect answer immediately. But when the response feels too broad or generic, they assume AI simply does not work for them or their industry. In this episode of Grounding AI, Donna Peterson shares why better AI results actually begin before the prompt itself. After presenting and moderating AI roundtables at the Women in Finishing Forum, Donna noticed a common pattern. Whether people were brand new to AI or using it every day, many were still unsure if they were using it effectively. This episode walks through four important questions every leader and team member should ask before using AI tools: Why do I want to use AI? What do I want to use it for? What goals should this support? How will I use AI collaboratively instead of treating it like a search engine? Donna also explains: Why AI works best as a conversation How to get more personalized and industry-specific responses Why relationship-building should still stay at the center of communication How to guide AI without letting it take your work in the wrong direction A simple exercise that can dramatically improve your prompts immediately If AI responses have ever felt too generic, this episode will help you rethink how you approach prompting and collaboration. Action Step: Before your next prompt, write this sentence first: “I want to use AI to help me __ so I can __.” Then continue asking questions until the response truly aligns with your goals. !! This Day in Legal History: Chinese Exclusion ActOn May 6, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act into law. The law imposed a 10-year ban on the immigration of Chinese laborers to the United States. It also made Chinese immigrants already in the country ineligible for naturalized citizenship, marking a major turn toward federal immigration restriction. The National Archives describes it as the first significant U.S. law restricting immigration and notes that it targeted an ethnic working group on the theory that it threatened public order. The law grew out of anti-Chinese racism and labor anxiety, especially in the American West, where Chinese workers were blamed for low wages and job competition. Although the Act formally applied to “Chinese laborers,” its enforcement burdened many Chinese people seeking entry, including those who claimed exempt status. The National Archives notes that the law helped create a broader framework for later race- and class-based exclusionary immigration policy. The Act was not temporary in practice. Congress extended it through the Geary Act of 1892, later made the exclusion regime permanent, and did not repeal the ban until 1943, during World War II, when the United States and China were allies.OpenAI president Greg Brockman testified in federal court that Elon Musk once supported changing OpenAI from a nonprofit into a for-profit company, but wanted full control of the organization as part of that shift. Brockman said Musk believed the nonprofit model could not raise enough money to build advanced AI systems. According to Brockman, Musk also said he needed an $80 billion stake to help fund a self-sustaining city on Mars. Brockman described a tense 2017 meeting where Musk allegedly rejected a proposed equity structure, became angry, took a painting made for him by Ilya Sutskever, and left while threatening to pause funding.Musk's lawsuit claims OpenAI and Sam Altman misled him into donating $38 million to a nonprofit that later abandoned its charitable mission in favor of profit. Musk is seeking $150 billion in damages for the nonprofit and wants Altman and Brockman removed from leadership. OpenAI argues that Musk is upset because he left before the company became highly successful and is now trying to gain control while also advancing his own AI company, xAI. Brockman also faced questions about his own financial interests, including testimony that his OpenAI stake is worth nearly $30 billion and evidence of an old diary entry about reaching $1 billion. OpenAI later created a for-profit unit controlled by the nonprofit, which helped it raise massive sums for computing power, hiring, and expansion.Musk wanted $80 billion to colonize Mars, OpenAI president testifies at trial | ReutersPublishers Elsevier, Cengage, Hachette, Macmillan, and McGraw Hill, along with author Scott Turow, sued Meta in federal court in Manhattan over its AI training practices. The lawsuit claims Meta used millions of copyrighted books and journal articles without permission to train its Llama large language models. The works allegedly included textbooks, scientific publications, and novels, such as books by N.K. Jemisin and Peter Brown. The publishers are seeking class-action status so they can represent a broader group of copyright owners. They are also asking for monetary damages.Meta responded that AI training can qualify as fair use and said it plans to fight the case. The publishers argue that using allegedly pirated copies of creative and scholarly works is not the same as lawful innovation. The case joins a growing wave of lawsuits by authors, news organizations, artists, and other creators against AI companies, including Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic. These lawsuits largely turn on whether using copyrighted works to train AI models is legally protected because the resulting systems create something new and transformative. Courts have not yet settled the issue, and early rulings have pointed in different directions. Anthropic previously resolved one major author lawsuit for $1.5 billion, showing how financially significant these disputes can become.Major publishers sue Meta for copyright infringement over AI training | ReutersThe U.S. Supreme Court allowed its recent Louisiana voting-rights ruling to take effect earlier than usual, clearing the way for political and legal consequences before the November midterm elections. The Court's April 29 decision had struck down a Louisiana congressional map that created a second Black-majority district. That ruling weakened a major part of the Voting Rights Act by limiting challenges to maps that allegedly dilute minority voting power. Normally, the Supreme Court waits 32 days before issuing its formal judgment, giving the losing side time to seek rehearing. Here, the Court agreed to speed up the process after a request from the voters who had won the case. The move helps Louisiana Republicans pursue a new congressional map and may weaken lawsuits challenging Governor Jeff Landry's decision to delay the state's May 16 congressional primaries. Some challengers had argued that Landry acted too soon because the Supreme Court's ruling had not formally taken effect yet. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, saying the Court's accelerated action had created disorder in Louisiana. The case is part of a broader national fight over redistricting, especially as both parties seek advantages in House races. The dispute began after Louisiana drew a second majority-Black district in 2024 to address a prior court ruling that the old map harmed Black voters under the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court later held that the replacement map relied too heavily on race, violating equal protection principles.US Supreme Court lets Voting Rights Act ruling take effect ahead of schedule | Reuters This is a public episode. Mary Gabrielyan, Chief Strategy Officer at AI Digital, joins Ari Paparo to learn about AI-driven supply path optimization, value-based bidding, media planning, and the future of ad tech. Insights on AI adoption, training gaps, and what skills will remain human. Takeaways AI Digital is an AI-native media consultancy built on machine learning and now evolving with generative AI and LLMs. The company offers managed services, smart supply curation, and AI Labs for client transformation and training. Elevate, their platform, provides end-to-end campaign management, including research, planning, reporting, and MMM insights. True AI-powered supply path optimization should be predictive and real-time, not just based on historical data. The industry is shifting from metric-based optimization (CPM, CTR) to value-based, outcome-driven AI bidding. AI-driven ad curation is evolving toward dynamic, real-time inventory optimization rather than static deal packaging. LLMs improve contextual targeting by understanding semantics, not just categories or keywords. Companies are underinvesting in AI training and tool adoption, limiting their ability to fully benefit from AI. Human skills like intuition, taste, empathy, and authenticity remain irreplaceable in an AI-driven world. Dawn Gagye joins Charli on the Pod this week to talk AIMost founders do not need more ideas. They need better structure around the growth already happening in the business. Dawn Gagye is a Fractional CMO, strategic advisor, keynote speaker, and WSI certified AI consultant. Dawn helps CEOs and founders of growing U.S. businesses build stronger marketing systems and adopt AI in practical ways that support the business instead of distracting from it. The companies she works with usually are not starting from scratch. They already have momentum, a team, and real revenue. But as the business grows, things get harder to hold together. Marketing feels disconnected. Reporting is inconsistent. Teams are busy, but not always aligned. And AI keeps showing up as something important, even though no one has time to sort through the noise. That is where Dawn comes in. Dawn helps leaders simplify growth by creating stronger structure behind the scenes: clearer strategy, better marketing systems, improved accountability, and practical AI adoption that saves time and reduces friction. Dawn believes AI should make a business more effective, not more complicated. The goal is not to add another layer of tools. The goal is to help leaders and teams work smarter, make better decisions, and create more leverage across the organization. Paul Stenhouse: Spotify sells books and old business data is being used to train AI models

Spotify is... selling books? Spotify has been in the audiobook business for two years, now operating in 22 markets with 700,000 titles to listen to. They say users want a 'multi-format reading experience' which allows them to go from listening to being able to pick up a real book. Their 'Page Match' feature allows you to take a photo of that page of the book to instantly jump to the audio version, or vice versa. In the US and UK, they'll now offer you the opportunity to buy the physical book right in the app. What's old is new again, I guess? Old business data is turning into a gold mine for AI There are now startups who help a company shut down with all the classic things —payroll, government filings, etc— and then also create assets out of the 'operational exhaust' of these now defunct companies. Old documents, presentations, slack conversations, and email archives can all be used to train new AI models. This way, the data reflects real people, the way they interact, and makes the agents more personable and informed. Additionally, all this data can then be turned into 'reinforcement learning gym' which allows AI companies to test how their latest models would work in a financial services firm, or a SaaS business, etc. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I want to give you a peek into the huge topic of “building AI literacy.” We work with hundreds of companies and vendors that offer many types of training so I wanted to give you an overview. This is a fast-changing topic because there's a raging debate about what “skills” AI users need (ie. complex thinking? business acumen?). I do know AI learns from language so if you can't put your needs or wishes into logical statements, you won't get the most out of AI. But, as I explain, there are a range of other issues as well. I also discuss how we teach people about bias, risk, auditability, data quality, tuning, and how “vibe coding” is a bit more complex than you think. If you're really stumped about how to use AI in your work, I urge you to get Galileo, our AI Agent specifically designed for HR, business leaders, and human capital consultants. Successful adoption depends on psychological safety, experimentation, and trust, with learning teams acting as strategic partners who understand the business. In this episode of The Health and Wellness Coach Journal Podcast, Dr. Jessica Singh speaks with Rebecca Rutschmann, a leading voice at the intersection of Human Intelligence and AI, dedicated to bridging the "GenAI Divide" in professional development. As the co-founder of Viva la Coaching Academy, she has moved beyond simple tool-training to champion AI fluency teaching coaches and leaders how to think with machines, not just through them. A recognized speaker and researcher, Rebecca partners with global organizations to design conversational AI experiences that prioritize ethical grounding, transparency, and the irreplaceable power of human presence. Rebecca shares how her path began with a lifelong fascination with technology. From being the only girl in tech class as a child, to working in website development, CRM systems, and corporate communications, she found herself repeatedly drawn to spaces where technology and communication met. Her journey into coaching began when she noticed that many young technical leaders in the workplace were struggling not with systems, but with people. Coaching gave her a language and a framework for supporting the human side of leadership, and over time it became clear that this was where her passions could converge. In this episode, Rebecca also explores the growing knowledge gap around AI in the coaching profession. Rebecca reflects on how many coaches are still overwhelmed by technology, unsure where to start, and deeply concerned about ethics, confidentiality, and responsible use. Through her work at Viva la Coaching Academy, she is helping fill that gap by creating learning spaces where coaches can explore AI safely, playfully, and in community. Rebecca speaks about one of the most important tensions in the field right now: how to embrace AI without sacrificing the heart of coaching. She explains that technology should not replace human connection, but it can enhance reflection, accountability, access, and professional growth. In many cases, AI is most useful between sessions through nudges, prompts, summaries, follow-up support, and reflective exercises that help clients sustain momentum. The conversation also explores the future of coach education. Rebecca makes the case that AI should not be treated as an optional extra or an advanced topic for later. Instead, it should be integrated into coach training from the beginning in ways that are practical, experiential, and grounded in ethical awareness. Dr. Singh and Rebecca also discuss what responsible AI use actually looks like. This episode serves as an encouraging reminder that AI in the future of coaching is not something happening to us. Rather, it is something we are actively shaping. Fireside Project is a nonprofit that helps reduce the risks of psychedelic experiences through a free support line, coaching, education, and research. In this episode, Joshua White speaks with Psychedelics Today about why real-time support matters, what it takes to run a national hotline, and what Fireside learned after more than 30,000 conversations since launch. White shares how his background as a lawyer and his early hotline volunteering shaped Fireside's model. He also describes how festival harm reduction work, including lessons from Zendo-style support spaces, revealed a major gap: people often need help during an experience and after it ends. A major focus of the conversation is Lucy, Fireside's new voice-to-voice role-play simulator designed to improve psychedelic support skills through low-stakes practice. Early Themes With Fireside Project Joshua White introduces Fireside Project as an accessible safety net for people who are actively having psychedelic experiences or processing past ones. The support line launched on April 14, 2021, and relies on trained community volunteers who commit to a year of service. White explains why anonymity matters. He argues that a phone-based container can make it easier for callers to share vulnerable material without fear of judgment. He also frames service as a key part of integration for volunteers who want to give back or prepare for work in the psychedelic field. Core Insights From Fireside Project White describes the early difficulty of building Fireside from scratch, including legal design, insurance hurdles, training development, and fundraising. He credits seed support from David Bronner and Dr. Bronner's for helping Fireside prove that people would actually use a psychedelic support line. He also explains a key harm reduction point: calling emergency services during a non-medical psychedelic crisis can escalate risk. Fireside aims to help people regulate, re-orient, and stay safer when panic or fear shows up. Key concepts discussed include: The thin line between healing and traumatizing during high-intensity psychedelic states Why callers often need connection, not rescue How volunteer capacity and call volume shape how long conversations run The difference between support during an experience and longer-term coaching support Later Discussion and Takeaways With Fireside Project The conversation then turns to Lucy, a training tool White describes as a "flight simulator" for psychedelic practitioners. Lucy is not part of the live support line. Instead, it offers emotionally responsive role-play scenarios so trainees can practice staying grounded, tracking consent and boundaries, and responding to crisis cues. White also addresses recording and consent. He argues Fireside needs strong training feedback loops to improve safety and quality. He describes an anonymization approach designed to remove phone numbers, strip identifying details, and distort voices while preserving emotional tone. He also explains the post-call option for callers to delete their recorded conversation. Practical takeaways include: Simulation can help trainees stay regulated when intense material emerges Better training can reduce unnecessary diversion to emergency rooms Clear consent language and easy deletion workflows matter for trust Coaching can expand the continuum of psychedelic support beyond therapy
