The TV sitcom The Golden Girls went off the air 32 years ago, but thanks to reruns, Dorothy Zbornak and her gal pals live on in the hearts of many, especially queer folks who delight in the comedic hijinks of four senior women living together in Miami.Although he was a toddler when the Golden Girls was first broadcast, voice over and musical theater actor Luke McQuillan's viral covers in the voice of Bea Arthur is helping to keep the show's legacy alive and it got him cast on Cartoon Network and Netflix shows. Is Luke so good at challenging Bea Arthur that he runs the risk of being overshadowed by the Broadway legend? Today Luke McQuilan joins us to celebrate the life and career of our favorite WWII Marine sergeant Bea Arthur, from her gigs in gay bars here in Chicago, to singing about drugs with Rock Hudson on her CBS TV special, from her quirky TV appearances like the Star Wars Holiday Special to her unforgettable portrayals as Maude and Dororthy on The Golden Girls.FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/luke.mcquillan★ instagram.com/faustofernos★ instagram.com/marcfelion

In honor of Memorial Day, Richard's guest is WWII Marine survivor Edgar Harrell, who shared his heroic survival story at one of our Men's Breakfasts in 2019. At the time, Sergeant Ed Harrell was the last surviving Marine of the USS Indianapolis. Two years after speaking at our event, Harrell passed away at the age of 96.  July 30, 1945: After transporting uranium for the atomic bomb that would soon be dropped on Hiroshima, the USS Indianapolis headed unaccompanied toward a small island in the South Pacific. At 12:14 a.m., she was struck by two Japanese torpedoes, rolled over, and sank. Harrell vividly describes the horrors of being plagued by dehydration, exposure, saline poisoning, and sharks. This is a story of courage, ingenuity, and faith in God's providence in the midst of the greatest catastrophe at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. Want to hear more about Ed Harrell's story? Preston and Sayre are joined today with Henry Sledge. Henry is the son of esteemed WWII Marine and author, Eugene “E.B.” Sledge, who wrote the seminal WWII memoir, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa. As the son of a Pacific Theater Marine infantryman and nephew to a Battle of the Bulge tanker, Henry has had a lifelong respect and admiration of not only the Pacific Theater of operations, but WWII in its entirety. We discuss the events which gave rise to the strategy and execution of the Pacific Theater, and the distinction of what those who fought in the Pacific faced compared to those deployed to the various other battlegrounds fought during a time of global war. Having personally visited the islands—homesite to some of the most brutal battles fought in WWII—we discuss the terrain and environment, and what it was like encountering the very bunker his father knocked out over a half-century prior. Henry is the co-host of WWII History podcast, What's the Scuttlebutt and the author of several published articles; has served as a historical consultant on WWII Pacific artwork for Valor Studios, and has been interviewed on camera many times, discussing his father.

This one opened. So, since it was burning, I got the Marine in that seat out stopped put a tourniquet on his right leg started back to a friendly area for a med evac. I went back for the driver. When I got there, I got hit two more times. But I managed to drag this kid back. I went back for my bag I got hit again. I was down for the count.  I woke up to being shook and then a sharp slap. It was my dad. He was wearing WWII Marine combat uniform. He told me that it was not my time to die, and he helped me up and helped me back to our lines. It is a book about 15 "underknown" women in the history of art, but it's also very much about perseverance and sticking with the hard things. Bridget's own story is woven into the biographies of the 15 women artists. In her life, as a young woman and now as someone who has entered the fifth decade, these women artists were lifelines for her: as inspirations and role models. She calls their art "a balm to [her] soul." Summary: these women are a f*cking big deal even if history hasn't always recognized them enough." Raised on the high plains of Montana with two sisters, six brothers, a devout mother and a WWII Marine father, in a home surrounded by cows and nuclear missile silos, today Bridget lives in San Francisco with her husband, two children, two dogs and a ridiculous number of bikes. As the son of a WWII Marine fighter pilot, Hardy Stennis of Macon, Mississippi was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. In this episode, Stennis discusses his military career spent as a combat pilot during the 1950s & 60s.  Determined to see the world, he requested to be stationed in Suga, Japan immediately after graduating flight school. At that time, regulations required that new graduates be assigned to a stateside training squadron, but somehow Stennis was granted his request. He remembers how a veteran pilot named Trigger Long took him under his wing and gave him the chance he needed. According to Stennis, there were plenty of ways for a young pilot to get into trouble in Japan in those days. He credits the fatherly advice of a major who encouraged him to stay away from wild living and stay in shape if he wanted to excel as a fighter pilot.  It was the major who convinced Stennis to try out of a local rugby team in Yokohama. Stennis goes on to detail his involvement in the Vietnam War. He remembers a mission to destroy a ferry in Laos, wiping out a large group of North Vietnamese soldiers attacking the Fifth Marines, and an altercation afterwards with an overbearing reporter.  PHOTO: Virtavia.com
