After making emergency landings all across Perpetua's western continent, Glesi, Yukai, Harlow, Tomor, and Arley have begun to find their footing—if not each other. Now, they leave where they landed, and begin to make their way across this mysterious land in search of answers to the question that brought them here to begin with: What is the Altar of Perpetua? This week on Friends at the Table: Perpetua Prelude 03 PERPETUA PRELUDE - GUIDE ITEMS AND MATERIALS - [PPIM] Sheldonica Ore [IMSO]: An incredible mat used to upgrade your gear. If you put it on a weapon, it gets bonus Fire damage. If you slot it onto armor, you get major fire resistance. That said, there's only one piece of this in Perpetua Prelude, which means you should plan ahead about how you want to use it. Hopefully there will be more in the full game. Invernal Branch [IMIB]: The bonus it gives you to navigation and floral communication is not worth the fact that it adds a CONSTANT running commentary during every fight. They did not record enough lines for this one. It will get on your nerves, I PROMISE. Stitchscore Bouncer [IMSB]: No, not a bouncer like the guy who stands out in front of the club and looks scary. It's a bouncing ball. You can use it on a few puzzles in the Adventure Fields, but it can also be used as a ranged weapon that will do a random number of bounces (read: attacks) per turn. It does low damage but the number of attacks it does is an OPEN ENDED COIN FLIP, which means that theoretically it could do infinite damage. It's just not very likely! Encyclopaedia Catastrophica [IMEC]: Not only does this unmissable item—which you get during the Grand Academy of the Collapse chapter—unlock a TON of lore in the Codex, it's also the most powerful ranged magic weapon in the demo. If you're scratching your head because you didn't find it, that's because you can't find it on your first playthrough for obvious reasons that would be obvious if you already DID beat it. But on Re-Prelude Mode, you'll get it early on. Since this is obviously a No Spoilers guide, that's all I'll say about THAT. I think even just that one thing will change a lot of people's lives.""If you say yes to every opportunity, you have no strategy.""I think it's important for people to be able to respect and like themselves. I think that's worth a lot of luxury in life.""Even if everything was successful. If I did things against my moral principles. Like, I'd be super rich and successful. I'd be in a big house, a nice TV, a nice house and all that nice stuff will be surrounding a piece of shit. And that piece of shit is me. And I think that's not worth it. Like I need to respect myself. I need to like myself for me to enjoy my life.""When you move from country to country, you realize: Hey, what's like socially polite and expected in one country (and) is offensive another. And you realize, (oh) these are all variables. These are all up to change human systems. And that's when you can think the most stuff fluidly. So my work has inspired a lot of people to try to change their life into games and change their minds.""I think there are so many facets that life can improve if you see it as a game. Like just one simple thing is just attitude and mentality, right? Some people think, "why do you have so many obstacles in my life?" "so much bad luck," and they kind of give up. But if you look at a game, a game is really boring if there are no obstacles or resistance or bad guys that are going against you.""In a game, every obstacle is actually an opportunity to score more points and people tackle them with a strong attitude. And I think in life, a lot of the same people when they face any obstacles, any setbacks, they're just like, oh my life sucks. I'm not going to try anymore. Like even with the game of golf, right? If golf was just about getting to the goal, then it's kind of boring. Just pick up the ball, walk up to the hole, and put it in. But no one would want to play that. So we need to add a lot of difficulty and obstacles or we need to stand up far away, headed with a weird stick. There needs to be little sand puddles and ponds to make it more frustrating. And now it's a fun game." Links Mentioned:Kurt's Twitter Kurt's InstagramKurt's LinkedInKurt's newsletter Rate the podcastYu-kai's LinkedInYu-kai's TwitterYu-kai's Website Octalysis group website
We speculate a lot about our future "robot servants" or "robot masters", but that whole metaphor is wrong. It's not going to happen that way. This is a very personal and rather speculative episode. No guests this time. It's just the two of us. In past episodes, you have already met some of the founders at the center of an amazing cluster of startups that have the potential to redefine the way humanity interacts with machines. Evocative Machines is a uniquely Japanese approach that has universal appeal, and I guarantee you that it's not what you expect. So let's get right to it. Links from the Founder Everything you ever wanted to know Evocative Machines Some evocative machines mentioned in this episode The GrooveX Lovot and Kaname's interview Yukai's Bocco and Shunsuke's interview Gatebox's Hikari (We'll have to get these guys on the show!) Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. Once again, I've got a special show for you today. There will be no guests no playful banter with someone speaking English as a second language. Today, it's just you and me. Today we'll be diving deep into a specific and unique area of Japanese innovation. There is something interesting happening in Japan, a cluster of startups working on something new. You've heard parts of it on past episodes, but today we are going into new and unknown territory, and I for one *love* being in new and unknown territory. It's a trend I first talked about on Disrupting Japan a few years ago as Evocative Machines. Evocative Machines is a unique Japanese technology emerging from the nexus of artificial intelligence, robotics, and healthcare, and it is something that could utterly transform our world. It's a technology that could birth a dozen Japanese unicorns, but we are at such an early stage and this is such a moonshot, it might not result in any at all. But a lot has changed since I first talked with you about Evocative Machines, so today I'll explain the technology and its importance, bring you fully up to date, and then we'll pull out our crystal balls and predict how evocative machines might actually change the world. Now, at the end of this podcast, I predict that 50% of our listeners will find what I am about to explain as interesting, but not important, another 40% will consider it important, but unlikely and impractical. And maybe 10% of you will understand that this is going to change the world and will want to be a part of it. And for those10% of you, I'll provide a way for you to get in touch. There are amazing things about to happen. Building an Evocative Machine So what exactly is an “evocative machine”? Machines are unquestionably becoming smarter, and recently there is a lot of good work being done on creating empathetic machines. But an “evocative machine” is quite different from an empathetic machine. The distinction is that empathetic machines are those that can understand our emotions and empathize with us. Evocative machines, on the other hand, are those which evoke emotions in us. Evocative machines are machines that cause us to empathize with them. So why is this useful, let alone disruptive or transformative? The whole point of automation is to get things done more simply. I don't want to feel sorry for my refrigerator when it breaks down. I don't want to sympathize with my microwave about how hard it's working when it heats my dinner. Life is stressful enough. Why waste our emotional energy on inanimate objects? Well, when you focus on a single task, that line of thinking is absolutely correct. But you know something? The Western approach to automation, AI, and robotics is hurting society. It's grinding us down without us even realizing it, and Japan's newly emerging evocative machines are the solution to this problem that we haven't completely realized we have...

I first met Shunsuke Aoki on a trip to Tokyo last year. The roboticist’s work fascinated me. From its brain-controlled cat ears and a robotic pillow with a tail that wags as you pet it, to more serious devices for older family members, Aoki’s Yukai Engineer has created some utterly fascinating products. On a recent trip to New York, Aoki and I sat down at Brooklyn cafe to discuss Aoki and Yukai’s goal of spreading joy through robotics.
Mourn, Boar, Steeljaw and Yukai are the topics of discussion for The Firm today. There's a pretty deep dive into Steeljaw and Yukai as they're the ones we got on the board, but if you listen closely during the Boar chat you'll actually hear Ryan's eyes widen with glee as a new Butchers six starts to fall into place in front of him. No errata or Miner's discussion from us in this episode, catch that next time when we've got the board feel from the Miner's and have digested the errata.
Captains, Cooks, Miners and ErrataIn the midst on one of the busiest days in Season 4, potentially one of the busiest days in Guild Ball related podcasting, even we can't resist talking about everything and hoping someone is listening. And all while I'm quite tired and not entirely well. You're welcome. In this episode Jason and I discuss more or less everything we have available to us. We take a hot takes look at the four new captains, a flying visit on the cooks, a short dive into the Miners, and finally a fairly long depth chat about the major balancing changes that have been introduced in the Errata..It's a good day to be a Guild Ball fan!
