“If you see your life as a game, then everything feels different.” Today, Yu-kai Chou (Author & Founder of The Octalysis Group & Metablox) joins us to talk about why fun is an important part of gaining motivation, creating long-lasting habits, and achieving greater happiness. He breaks down the 8 core drivers of motivation, which you can use to maintain momentum and stay engaged with your healthy habits (for the long run). Sorry, but hope and willpower have no place here. Tune in to learn how gamification can help you move the needle! Meet Yu-kai Chou: Yu-kai Chou is an Author and International Keynote Speaker on Gamification and Behavioral Design. He is the Author of Actionable Gamification and the Founder of The Octalysis Group as well as Metablox. His design work has empowered over 1 Billion users' experiences and was rated #1 among the “Top 100 Gamification Gurus” in the world. Yu-kai was also Chief Experience Officer in Decentral, working with Ethereum Cofounder Anthony Di Iorio, as well as Head of Creative Labs/Digital Commerce for HTC, pioneering VIVE VR and the Metaverse. Episode Highlights: Yu-kai's game objective is creating the most impact possible while having fun. If you're not having fun, why are you doing it? (04:40) You will become truly successful when you're doing what you love on a regular basis. (10:03) The 8 core drivers of motivation in Yu-kai's Octalysis Framework: Epic Meaning & Calling, Development & Accomplishment, Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback, Ownership & Possession, Social Influence & Relatedness, Scarcity & Impatience, Unpredictability & Curiosity, and Loss & Avoidance (12:38) As long as you feel like you're progressing, you'll stay motivated. Once you lose a sense of progression, your motivation can decrease. (17:21) One of the most effective ways to maintain momentum (or a habit) is keeping a streak. Creating a streak is not about how well you do at your habit, it's about how consistent you are. Streaks train your brain to check in every day, otherwise you lose the momentum. To avoid burnout/frustration from losing a streak, build a vacation/rest day into it! (31:52) Happiness is growth, but it's also balance. Happiness is not all about money and career, it requires a holistic approach where you work on your physical health, mindset, emotional health, relationships, and more. What current habits do you have in each of these that aren't helping you? How can you replace them with different habits and gamify them to achieve greater happiness in life? On this episode we bring Yu-kai Chou back! At the time of the recording, my newborn daughter wasn't still around, so you might hear a reference here and there about me saying "when I become a parent" or similar. Because this episode is all about what we can learn and apply from gamification with our own kids. Yu-kai's perspective is that of a dad of two twin girls, and of course that of an international renown expert, consultant and the creator of the Octalysis framework for gamification. We go through plenty in the episode, and hope that you find it as useful as I did!

I think even just that one thing will change a lot of people's lives.""If you say yes to every opportunity, you have no strategy.""I think it's important for people to be able to respect and like themselves. I think that's worth a lot of luxury in life.""Even if everything was successful. If I did things against my moral principles. Like, I'd be super rich and successful. I'd be in a big house, a nice TV, a nice house and all that nice stuff will be surrounding a piece of shit. And that piece of shit is me. And I think that's not worth it. Like I need to respect myself. I need to like myself for me to enjoy my life.""When you move from country to country, you realize: Hey, what's like socially polite and expected in one country (and) is offensive another. And you realize, (oh) these are all variables. These are all up to change human systems. And that's when you can think the most stuff fluidly. So my work has inspired a lot of people to try to change their life into games and change their minds.""I think there are so many facets that life can improve if you see it as a game. Like just one simple thing is just attitude and mentality, right? Some people think, "why do you have so many obstacles in my life?" "so much bad luck," and they kind of give up. But if you look at a game, a game is really boring if there are no obstacles or resistance or bad guys that are going against you.""In a game, every obstacle is actually an opportunity to score more points and people tackle them with a strong attitude. And I think in life, a lot of the same people when they face any obstacles, any setbacks, they're just like, oh my life sucks. I'm not going to try anymore. Like even with the game of golf, right? If golf was just about getting to the goal, then it's kind of boring. Just pick up the ball, walk up to the hole, and put it in. But no one would want to play that. So we need to add a lot of difficulty and obstacles or we need to stand up far away, headed with a weird stick. There needs to be little sand puddles and ponds to make it more frustrating. And now it's a fun game." Links Mentioned:Kurt's Twitter Kurt's InstagramKurt's LinkedInKurt's newsletter Rate the podcastYu-kai's LinkedInYu-kai's TwitterYu-kai's Website Octalysis group website

Estamos siendo gamificados. You've got your content together. But how do you structure it so that there's flow, and to maximise engagement and learning? It can be difficult to wrestle everything into place and decide how to cover each element. In this episode, we have a host of practical tips for you, based around Colin Rose's MASTER structure for training design. This episode was recorded before the pandemic, so some of the references (e.g. recent face to face training!) may sound strange now, but we're confident all of the insights are still relevant to the world training designers find themselves in today. 00:42 This episode: at your request! 01:03 The big mistakes people make with structure 05:41 ADDIE is not structure 06:53 Colin Rose and the MASTER structure 07:39 An overview of MASTER 09:26 M is for Mindset 12:44 A is for Acquire the information 14:25 S is for Sift or Search for meaning 15:39 Going beyond Bloom to what it means to the individual 17:10 T is for Trigger the Memory 20:48 Story as a memory trigger 21:51 E is for Exhibit the learning 24:42 R is for Reflect 25:03 Sheridan's online course on MASTER 25:17 MASTER at Micro and Macro levels, and playing with the order of steps 27:33 Case study: A styles session 32:53 Mapping MASTER to Why, What and How 34:47 Following versus flexing the model 39:07 Terry's mini-topic: Book review - Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou 46:41 Summary Resource Links 'MASTER it faster': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Master-Faster-Learn-Decisions-Creatively/dp/185835806X Sheridan's online course including MASTER: https://trainingdesignersclub.co.uk/resources/?fbclid=IwAR07OGE-ugJBOzLaZFiM0jWghfLviFGzmYOhgZ1hT0UV9SLSGjPQvgxRHXA Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Actionable-Gamification-Beyond-Points-Leaderboards/dp/1511744049/ Contact the Hosts Our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TrainingDesignPodcast Terry Pearce LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/terrypaulpearce Sheridan Webb LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/trainingdesigner The Training Designers' Club: www.trainingdesignersclub.co.uk Untold Play: www.untoldplay.com - For game-based learning and gamified learning consultancy and design 360 Learning Design: 360learningdesign.com - For bespoke, creative and personalised learning design Keystone Development: www.keystonedevelopment.co.uk - For bespoke learning and development programme design Power Hour: www.power-hour.co.uk - For ready written bite-size training materials
This week on the podcast we have Scott Hebert from Canada! Scott is a huge advocate for the use of "gamification" in education. Gamification is the application of game mechanics in non game concepts, an approach that is gaining massive traction in education, yet is still heavily misunderstood. Scott has transformed his classroom into a giant, year-long, RPG-style game where students compete with each other to achieve a common goal. He also shares his ideas on social media under the hashtag #GameMyClass. He has created resources and tools that are free for everyone, spending countless hours building his website, editing videos for his YouTube channel, writing blogs, and creating an online community where educators can share ideas. A highlight for Scott has been getting up on stage and speaking at a TEDx event with a session titled "The Power of Gamification in Education". We touch on a number of resources, videos and other tools throughout the episode, so feel free to click through the links below to explore them in more depth: •Scott's website. •Follow Scott on Twitter. •Subscribe to Scott on YouTube. •Actionable Gamification book by Yu Kai Chou. •Speed camera lottery video on YouTube. •Access to Scott's GlideApp template.

Games have encouraged desired actions from the beginning of time. How can we use game-like elements & why do they work so well?In this podcast, Jonny goes through how game elements are actually based on our core human drives. From the beginning of time Games were created to motivate us to do things;Sport ‘games' were originally created to get people to take action and keep fit.Board Games like Chess were created to educate soldiers on military strategy.Ancient games like “Knuckles” were used to keep people's minds entertained and Engaged during a famine.Games and game-like elements have been used to educate, entertain and engage. Some classic game elements are; Points, badges & leaderboards.Points (used in sports, Sky Miles, reward cards and video games)Badges (from the military to golden stars on school report cards)Leaderboards (used in the Olympics, sales teams, and in general life to see who winners or losers are). These are just to name a few, but there's actually a lot more to these seemingly simple elements than what most people think.World-leading Gamification expert Yu-kai Chou believes that true gamification is when we tap into our core human drives. He believes these core drives are key to bringing “fun & engagement” into almost any task; these 8 universal core drives are;• Meaning – the desire to feel that our actions have a purpose• Accomplishment – The drive to achieve and overcome challenges• Empowerment – The desire to choose one's own direction and try a variety of solutions to a problem• Ownership – The desire to own things and have possession• Social Influence – The drive to interact with, help, learn from and compete with others• Scarcity – The drive of wanting things you can't have• Unpredictability – The drive of wanting to know what will happen next, and ..• Avoidance – The drive to avoid pain or negative consequences. The history and effectiveness of elements like points, badges and leaderboards according to Yu-Kai Chou is in their ability to use these core drives. For instance;- Point systems make us feel like we have a meaning, purpose and a sense of progression.- Badges tap into the need for accomplishment and reward- Leaderboards appeal to our need for social status and influence. The more we understand the psychology behind our core drives, the better we will be at Creating Games & Campaigns that meet our core needs and intern is proven to become more fun, engaging and a higher likelihood of being shared. For video and full text go here: https://www.gamify.com/gamification-blog/8-core-human-drives-in-gamification-marketing-videoDid you like this Podcast? It began as an intense passion for gaming and grew into a philosophy – a way of life. Yu-Kai Chou is one of the earliest pioneers of a concept called ‘gamification’. Having put his “heart and soul” into the game ‘Diablo II’ and spending countless hours levelling up his character, he realized that time would’ve been better spent levelling up in real life. Turning the daily grind into a game, he became his own RPG character, and was hooked on the thrill of honing and enhancing his skills. This realisation led to a number of business ventures, culminating in the founding of The Octalysis Group which helps companies engage with consumers through behavioural science and gameful design. In this inspiring conversation, he explores the frameworks you can adopt to begin excelling in your life.

After spending thousands of hours mastering video games, young Yu Kai Chou realized that he felt a deep sense of emptiness. That epiphany inspired his research that has now affected more than 1 BILLION people worldwide. In a quest to make real life more appealing than video games, he began studying the science of how developers create virtual worlds that satisfy our needs & make us want to spend time there. He has spent decades learning how to apply the core drives found in games to real life. In this episode we talk about why most gamers are actually women, core drives, how games can help solve real world problems & meet real world needs (like learning algebra) and how parents can apply these strategies to tap into core drives of our children to teach them effectively. When I started this episode, I didn’t quite know what to expect, but by the end, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was one of my most informative & insightful podcast episodes ever. It opened up my world to an entirely new field of study & I hope it will do the same for you! Some other topics we touched on are: -Why governments & big organizations are calling on Yu kai -Why women make up a huge percentage of gamers -Origin of the “typical” gamer stereotype -What is gamification? -Why habits don’t need motivation -Everyone plays a real life game -Search for epic meaning & calling -Lowest hanging fruit in making an experience enjoyable -The human need for social interaction -Best applications of gamification in real world -Our search for something rare drives us -2nd graders learning algebra -Applying gamification to parenting -Understanding core drives of our children -What are you rewarding? -The power of family identity - Lex Luther, Game of Thrones -Teaching the important things -How outspoken faith has impacted his journey -Message on his heart -Next Interview Resources mentioned: “Actionable Gamification: Beyond Points, Badges & Leaderboards” by Yu Kai Chou Octalysis Prime education platform by Yu Kai Chou “Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better & How they Can Change the World” by Jane McGonigal “SuperBetter: The Power of Living Gamefully” by Jane McGonigal Follow Yu Kai’s journey on FB or IG @yudashkai
