This is a short sketch which I put together straight out of my head in an add lib one take without any rehearsal. After trying out a new electric car I can say its one of the most nerve racking experiences I've had recently they're not for the faint hearted you spend your time trying to find charge points where you bump into the most geekish freakish people who seem to all have high powered jobs working for the secret service or brainy buffins in some battery design laboratories syncing complex crypto cars that drive the average human insane. It's going to get to the point where you'll need a robot to just drive you to the nearby shops you'll need a degree in computer engineering just to open your fridge that's if you're allowed to have any more drink after driving these damn stress machines , you need a drink before you drive them doubtless you'll be on a quota an app called AA or the RAC the royal alcoholics club. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-richardson41/message

Some notes on Good Energy #GOOD VALUATION SUMMARY Market Capitalisation = £29m Net Cash = £19m Enterprise Value = £10m Net Asset Value = £38m WHAT DO THEY DO? Good Energy is a supplier of 100% renewable power and an innovator in energy services. It has long term power purchase agreements with a community of 1,700 independent UK generators who are independent businesses, non profits and local communities, spread all over Britain. Since it was founded 20 years ago, the Company has been at the forefront of the charge towards a cleaner, distributed energy system. Its mission is to power a cleaner, greener world and make it simple to generate, share, store, use and travel by clean power. Its ambition is to support one million homes and businesses to cut carbon from their energy and transport used by 2025. Good Energy is recognised as a leader in this market, through green kite accreditation with the London Stock Exchange, Which? Eco Provider status and Gold Standard Uswitch Green Tariff Accreditation for all tariffs. THE CEO In April 2021 Nigel Pocklington was announced as the successor to Juliet Davenport the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Good Energy. This transition is part of the continuing evolution of Good Energy from its roots as a simple green energy provider to a newer world green energy services and 'mobility as a service' provider. Nigel most recently served as Chief Commercial Officer of Moneysupermarket.com Group plc. Prior to this, he held a variety of senior roles within Expedia Inc., including President of eBookers and Chief Marketing Officer of Hotels.com. He spent a decade of his early career at Pearson plc, including a period leading the digital operations of the Financial Times. A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE COMPANY Good Energy have 2 different parts to the business. They supply Renewable energy to domestics & business customers: On 20 January 2022 they announced the disposal of its 47.5MW generation portfolio to Bluefield Solar Income Fund for a total consideration of up to £24.5m. This generation portfolio of two wind farms & six solar farms supplied 15% of their customers. They now have long term power purchase agreements with a community of 1,700 independent UK generators that supply their 277,000 customers. This sale of their generation portfolio was part of their strategy to transition to a higher margin energy services provider. Energy Services, this includes Solar Installation & generation, Heat Pumps & Transport Through acquisitions they now have a business that can install solar panels, heat pumps and manage customers generation. They are the second-largest feed-in-tariff operator in the UK, and has one of the highest profitability/customer in the industry. Transport: They also own 49.9% of Zap-Map, the UK's No.1 EV charging map iOS/Android app. It allows users to search for EV charging points, plan journeys and pay for charging. It has 600,000 customers and recently raised £9m, £5.3m was from from Fleetcor, (NYSE: FLT) is a leading global business payments company that helps businesses spend less by providing innovative solutions that enable and control expense-related purchasing and payment processes. FORECASTS Year Revenue Net profit 2023E £267m £1.75m 2024E £258m £4.55m The net margin is therefore expected to increase from 0.6% in 2023 to 1.7% in 2024, which is more than doubling. They had £38m gross cash at the end of May, which is considerably larger than its market cap. Good Energy rejected a 400p hostile bid in 2021. Canaccord, their brokers, have a target of 475p, current sp 174p. Canaccord: “At our unchanged 475p target, which continues to be based on a sum of-parts, the stock would trade at 13x/8x 2024/25E P/E, and still with a substantial net cash position. We remain Buyers” MY OPINION Good Energy are the original renewable energy company have loyal customers who are of the same ethos, which is to champion green energy decentralisation. As a company they are profitable, pay a dividend and have a big chunk of cash, around £20m. Some of this will be used to acquire complimentary businesses to enable them to expand further into the green energy, higher margin, services sector. This is a sector that is growing and will continue to grow for decades backed by global regulation to cut carbon emissions. Their revenue generation of £240m+ pa means even a slight improvement in margins, which will happen as they transition from energy supplier to energy service provider, could see a major positive re-rating on their valuation. A special podcast from Spotlight, the New Statesman's policy supplement - The New Statesman podcast will return tomorrow. In 2020, the UK announced the end of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030. At the time, Boris Johnson's government pledged £1.8bn to support greater uptake of zero emission vehicles, including £1.3bn to rollout more chargepoints for electric vehicles nationwide. Since then, the country has seen the biggest year-on-year growth in electric car registration for years. But there are millions of registered cars on the road in the UK – so how far have we come on the EV journey? In the second episode of a three-part special partnered series with Wejo, the smart mobility tech company, a panel of expert guests discuss what's standing in the way of greater uptake of EVs, in the UK and elsewhere. Alona Ferber, editor of the New Statesman's Spotlight policy channel, is joined by Richard Barlow, founder and chief executive of Wejo, Melanie Shufflebotham, founder and COO of the EV charging app, Zap_Map, Dale Vince, CEO of Ecotricity, and Philipe Vangeel, Secretary General of AVERE, the European Association for Electromobility. The next episode of this special series explores the autonomous vehicles future that is nearly here. Click here for the first episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

With any new technology that comes to the market, there will always be criticism – with electric vehicles (EVs) being no exception. From EVs ‘not having enough range' to ‘the battery taking ages to charge', people have a lot of inaccurate perceptions surrounding this particular vehicle genre. In response, the motoring experts at Vanarama have debunked five common myths that stop motorists from switching to an EV. Top five most common EV misconceptions, debunked Myth #1: They cost too much The truth: EV owners can save up to £3,108 per year Often people won't pick an electric vehicle for their next car as ‘it costs too much', however, did you know that you can lease an electric car for £149 per month? And that switching to an electric vehicle could save you up to £3,108 per year? This research was uncovered by Vanarama and is based on the following stats: Low-emissions zones could save EV owners £2,100 per year Low-emissions zones often referred to as LEZs, are there to encourage owners of highly polluting vehicles to stop driving through inner-city areas by charging them a fee if they do so. Vanarama's research found that EV drivers could save £175 a month through LEZ exemption, which equates to £2,100 per year and £8,400 per average total vehicle ownership (four years). Not paying for fuel could save EV owners £858 per year No longer needing to pay for fuel at a petrol station could save EV owners £72 per month, which equals £858 per year and £3,432 per average total vehicle ownership. The fuel savings, from. NimbleFins, include the cost of charging an EV (£342 per year), based on the average British driver's yearly mileage of 7,600 miles. Car tax exemption could save EV owners £150 per year Under the current rules, car tax doesn't apply to all-electric cars. This means EV owners could save £13 per month, £150 per year, and £600 per average total vehicle ownership from not having to pay car tax. These tax calculations are based on the UK's best-selling car of 2021, the sub-40k Vauxhall Corsa. Myth #2: The range on electric cars isn't good The truth: The average EV only needs to be charged every 10 days Whilst this may have been the case 10 years ago or more, the average pure electric vehicle now has a range of 197 miles on a single charge. With the average motorist driving 20 miles per day, this means you only need to charge your car every 10 days. However, if you're still worried about the range, there are some tips and tricks to squeeze more miles out of a single charge: Remove unnecessary items from the car – Naturally, the heavier the vehicle means the range will deplete more than if your car was lighter. Avoid high speeds – Always drive to the speed limit and take it easy when accelerating. Make the most of regenerative braking – Anticipate the road ahead and ease off the brakes to make your battery last longer. Myth #3: There aren't enough charging points The truth: There are 34,000 public electric charging points across the UK – and you can get one for free According to Zap-Map, as of August 2022, there are nearly 34,000 public electric charging points in the UK – which are spread across more than 20,500 locations. This is a 34% increase in the number of charging devices since August 2021. These figures show how many electric charging points in the UK there are that are part of the country's public EV charging infrastructure. In the capital, there are 102 public chargers per 100,000 of population, while at the other end of the scale Northern Ireland has just 18 per 100,000. - The average provision across the UK is 42 per 100,000. - DfT says its information is provided by the EV charge point app Zap-Map, which claims to record 95 per cent of all available devices. The government's own database (the National Chargepoint Registry) records fewer than 20,000 public charge points nationwide - Zap-Map doesn't record how many cars can be charged by a single charge point device, so the true picture of charge capacity is likely to be higher than the stated number, the DfT says. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NORWAY: 9 OUT OF 10 CARS HAVE A PLUG SOCKET "The numbers for the Norwegian car for 2020 is out. The share of pure electric cars (BEVs) has raised from 42.4 % in 2019 to 54.3 % in 2020. For the first year over half of all new cars sold are pure electric. The share of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) was 20.4 %. In other words, 3 of 4 car sold in 2020 has a charging socket." writes Jan for eMobilityNorway.com: "The four most sold car model was electric. Audi e-tron with 9 227 car (6.5 % market share). Tesla Model 3 with 7 770 cars (5.5 % market share). Volkswagen ID.3 with 7 754 cars (5.5 % market share). Nissan Leaf with 5 221 cars (3.7 % market share). For December the numbers were even better. 66.7 % market share for BEVs and 20.4 % for PHEVs. This gives a market share of 87.1 % for cars with a charging socket." Autoblog on why Norway is not a typical market: "Seeking to become the first nation to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2025, oil-producing Norway exempts fully electric vehicles from taxes imposed on those relying on fossil fuels. The policy has turned the country's car market into a laboratory for automakers seeking a path to a future without internal combustion engines, vaulting new brands and models to the top of bestseller lists in recent years. While the sale of BEVs had broken the 50%-mark in individual months, 2020 was the first time that fully electric cars outsold the combined volume of models containing internal combustion engines for a year as a whole." And Automotive News Europe looked to the future: "Tesla's Model Y SUV is set to reach the Norwegian market this year, as are the first electric SUVs from Ford, BMW and Volkswagen. By contrast, cars with diesel-only engines have tumbled from a peak of 76 percent of the overall Norwegian market in 2011 to just 8.6 percent last year. While the EV market share will keep rising, there is uncertainty around how many vehicles automakers will allocate to Norway as European demand is increasing, said Harald Frigstad, CEO at Norwegian car importer Bertel O. Steen." https://www.emobilitynorway.com/post/54-3-of-all-new-cars-in-norway-last-year-was-pure-electric https://www.autoblog.com/2021/01/05/norway-ev-electric-car-sales-market-share/ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/norways-ev-sales-rise-record-54-market-share MAZDA MX-30 CONFIRMED FOR U.S. WITH EV "Mazda's quirky foray into the electric-vehicle market, the MX-30, will eventually come to the U.S. A Mazda spokesperson confirmed to C/D that the company will offer the MX-30 in America with two drivetrains: either solely with an electric motor and a battery pack or with a plug-in-hybrid setup using a rotary gasoline engine." says Car & Driver: " In global markets, the EV version has a 144-horsepower electric motor powering the front wheels and is offered with a small 35.5-kWh battery pack that provides a short 124-mile driving range on the WLTP cycle. We don't know the specs for the plug-in hybrid, but we expect it to be powered primarily by the electric motor. Similar to models such as the BMW i3 and Chevy Volt, the gasoline engine will serve mostly as a range-extender that kicks in to charge the battery pack—only in the MX-30's case, that engine will use an unconventional rotary design." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35130726/mazda-mx-30-confirmed-usa/ TESLA GIGA BERLIN CONSTRUCTION IS NEARLY COMPLETE "The construction of the outer shell of Giga Berlin seems to be nearing completion, and the factory is almost ready for the interior work. Despite the temporary delays in obtaining final environmental permits, prior permits allow Tesla to carry out all the necessary work and equipment installation in the Paint Shop." according to TEsmanian: "At the moment, thanks to drone recordings, it is clear that almost all buildings have walls and roofs, which are important for protection from bad weather and precipitation. The Drive Unit building has been fully completed from the outside, and internal construction work is underway to prepare the premises for equipment installation. Today Musk shared a video of Giga Berlin covered in snow" https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-giga-berlin-construction-shows-nearly-completion-as-ev-storm-is-coming-for-ice TESLA UNVEILS NEW MAP OF UPCOMING SUPERCHARGER STATIONS "Tesla has released a new map of its upcoming Supercharger stations, adding many new planned stations to the network, removing others, and updating timelines in the process. Tesla has now released its 2021 update to the map – adding many new stations in the process, as well as removing some that were previously shown as planned, and updating the timelines for many more stations." reports electrek: "The automaker appears to have added many planned stations in key markets where its fleet is growing, like in California, the Northeast, in China, and in some European markets. When clicking on the pin, Tesla gives a rough timeline of Q3 2021, and the automaker now says that those timelines are going to be updated on a quarterly basis. For some new market expansions, like in Eastern Europe for example, Tesla is not providing timelines, but new potential Supercharger locations are listed on the new map." https://electrek.co/2021/01/05/tesla-unveils-map-upcoming-supercharger-stations-updates-timelines/ REVEALED: UK’S TOP RANKING ELECTRIC VEHICLE NETWORKS "Zap-Map, the UK’s leading electric vehicle (EV) mapping service, is today releasing its annual electric vehicle charging network satisfaction rankings. The results, based on a sample of more than 1,500 Zap-Map users, show that Tesla retains its top spot as the country’s most appreciated EV charging provider, the network receiving the highest ranking, one driver commenting that Tesla’s service is “the standard all networks should aspire to”. Dr Ben Lane, co-founder and CTO at Zap-Map, said: “This year’s network rankings should focus the minds of all EV charging providers. As the survey demonstrates, EV drivers are very clear about the factors that make for a good charging experience, with reliability and ease of use being key priorities.” https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9066/revealed-uks-top-ranking-electric-vehicle-networks/ SMART TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC ESUV "smart, known mostly for its tiny two-seat cars, is working on a new model, which will be an SUV We guess, however, that it will be a kinda small crossover/SUV. The new smart eSUV will be, of course, all-electric, based on Geely's new Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform and produced in China for the Chinese market, as well as for Europe." reports InsideEVs: "It's expected that this new model should be ready around 2022, but don't expect the eSUV in the U.S., as smart retired from North America. Currently, smart offers two BEVs: fortwo and forfour EQ models" https://insideevs.com/news/464185/smart-esuv-electric/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles DEMAND FOR BATTERY SWAP TO BOOM OVER COMING 5 YEARS "China's new energy vehicle battery swapping industry is expected to experience a boom in the next 5 years, but there remain obstacles such as high costs and a lack of standardization, according to insiders. BAIC BJEV-one of the first automakers in China to carry out large-scale investment and operation in the NEV battery swapping industry-had set up 225 stations in 19 cities in China and had 22,000 battery-swapping vehicles on the road as of November." according to China Daily: "Statistics show that the construction cost of a battery-swap station is around 3-10 million yuan ($460,000-$1.53 million). Calculated on the basis that each station will have a reserve of 20 batteries and each battery is valued 100,000 yuan, the cost of batteries for each station will reach 2 million yuan. And that's not counting land, labor and electricity costs. According to the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance, as of November 2020, China had 535 battery-swap stations." http://epaper.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202101/04/WS5ff2575aa31099a234352f90.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK EV tech is on a rip, but is the constant improvement around an EV a possible reason NOT to buy one? FOLLOW UP: GREEN NUMBER PLATE TRIALLast week we discussed the news that Nissan dealers were trialling, the soon to be introduced, green number plates that indicate the car is an EV. Alan and Andrew were confused by why only Nissan and why a trial, turns out that these are only mock-ups and not actually road legal. The chaps apologise for not doing enough research to have established the full facts. We will do better in the future.NEW CAR REGISTRATION FIGURES FOR AUGUST 2020August is traditionally a quieter month for New Car Registration figures due to holidays and September being a new plate month. However, even taking that into consideration, the market was still down 5.8% year-on-year. Considering the state of, well everything, only 5.8% is not bad! The figure was boosted by a surge (sorry) in the number of electric vehicles registered. Show #885 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 8th September 2020. Welcome to two new Patrons. RAYMOND ROWLEDGE and MYLES HAMILTON are both new Executive Producers. It is Lucid Air week. Tomorrow, Wednesday, is the livestream unveil. VIDEO: ELON MUSK DRIVES VW ID.3 According to Handelsblatt last week “When Elon Musk’s private jet, the “Gulfstream G650”, took off from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport on Wednesday at 9:17 pm, everyone thought: The Tesla boss’s visit to Germany is over. But only 26 minutes later the plane landed at Braunschweig Airport. The reason for the stopover was a visit to VW boss Herbert Diess.” A VW official confirmed the meeting between the two CEOs, but they didn’t elaborate on the nature of it." But now we know - it was to drive the ID.3 alongside Chairman of the Board of VW Herbert Diess. Herbert Diess posted on LinkedIn this update: " "We are ready for take off!" In the comments under the footage he also said, "Thanks for the visit, Elon! Hope you like the video. It was great driving the ID.3 with you! You were just quite critical with the available torque at higher speed. I told you: "Yes, we are on the runway - but no need for take off - its not a sports car.” For this you should try our Porsche Taycan. Looking forward to our next meeting! " And here's the audio. The video has captions because it seems to be recorded on a shaly mobile phone with poor sound. Elon is driving, and Diess in the passenger seat. Herbert Diess took to Linked in later in the day on Monday to deny the speculation that the new execs had been thrashing out the idea of some for of collaboration between the two automakers.: "“Just to be clear: We just drove the ID.3 and had a chat - there is no deal/cooperation in the making.”" https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6708652868141907968/ TESLA LOOKING AT BECOMING AN ELECTRICITY PROVIDER IN GERMANY " Elon Musk appears to be opening a new front in the European battle for electric car supremacy: the power behind the wheel. Musk's Tesla has recently acquired a license that will enable the carmaker to trade electricity across Western Europe, and the company has also been surveying customers in Germany about potentially using Tesla electricity in their cars." says Autoblog: "It could also open the way for Tesla to use power stored by customers to help balance the electricity grid, an increasingly important service in Germany as it becomes ever more dependent on volatile wind and solar power." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/07/tesla-energy-industry-germany/ TESLA DEVELOPING AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST VIRTUAL POWER PROJECT The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has issued AUS$8.2 million in funding for the development of what is claimed to be the largest virtual power plant in the country. The funding will be used by Tesla Motors Australia to install battery energy storage and rooftop solar systems for 3,000 residential consumers in South Australia." says SmartEnergy.com: "Tesla will install 5kW of rooftop solar and a 13.5kWh Powerwall battery system at each property, at no cost to the tenant. The phase supports Tesla’s ambition to create the world’s largest virtual power plant comprising 50,000 solar and storage systems across residential and private dwellings. The 3000 additional systems will participate in AEMO’s virtual power plant (VPP) trial to provide a range of grid stability services by exporting excess energy to the National Electricity Market." Move beyond automotive, into how we power the planet. Scale - 180,000 cars in the first half of 2020, but that's about to explode From Tesla.com: "Autobidder provides independent power producers, utilities and capital partners the ability to autonomously monetize battery assets. Autobidder is a real-time trading and control platform that provides value-based asset management and portfolio optimization, enabling owners and operators to configure operational strategies that maximize revenue according to their business objectives and risk preferences" https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/finance-investment/tesla-developing-australias-largest-virtual-power-project/ https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/support/autobidder BMW MAY BE PLANNING ELECTRIC 3 SERIES "An electric version of BMW’s 7 and 5 Series has already been officially confirmed. According to a British media report, there will also be a BEV offshoot for the 3-series – but not for several years." according to Electrive: "According to information from Autocar, the electric 3-series is to be based on the BMW i4 and could adopt the model designation i3 when production of the current i3 comes to an end. The magazine refers to “sources that are familiar with the production plan”. According to BMW’s latest statement on the future of the current i3, the latter is to receive another battery update and “will continue to be built until 2024”. Also planned is a purely electric BMW i1, which will compete against the VW ID.3. For the X1, BMW had confirmed a battery-electric iX1 in July. If the i1 assumed by Autocar would be based on the well-known 1-series, BMW would then have announced 1-series, 3-series, 5-series and 7-series BEV versions of its core lineup." https://www.electrive.com/2020/09/07/bmw-may-be-planning-electric-3-series/ SK INNOVATION PUSHES FOR 3RD EV BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY "SK Innovation Co., a South Korean refining-to-battery conglomerate, is pushing for its third battery plant in Hungary, people familiar with the issue said Monday." according to Korea Herald: "SK Innovation has begun a process of selecting subcontractors for the construction of the proposed plant, they said. SK Innovation denied that the selection process has begun, saying no decision has been made in regard to the third Hungarian plant. Currently, SK Innovation runs a plant with an annual capacity of 7.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the northwestern Hungarian city of Komarom. SK Innovation has also been working to complete its second plant with a capacity of 9.8 GWh, next to the first plant, by 2022." http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200907000834 MG E-HS PLUG-IN HYBRID COMING NEXT YEAR "The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is about to get some competition from China. The plug-in hybrid MG HS is still on track to touch down in Australia next year, with the promise of class-leading electric range" says CarExpedrt: "With a claimed electric range of 75km, the e-HS has the on-paper credentials to put the upcoming plug-in hybrid Ford Escape (50km) and Mitsubishi Outlander (50km) in the shade. How the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV set for reveal next year will compare isn’t clear, but a longer electric range than the current 50km is likely." https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/mg-e-hs-plug-in-hybrid-coming-next-year ZAP-PAY: NEW APP PROMISES SEAMLESS PAYMENT FOR EV CHARGING "Electric vehicle (EV) users will no longer have to shuffle between apps and cards to pay to charge on different networks, with the launch of a new service enabling them to do so from a single app." says Business Green "Zap-Pay launches today, with Engenie the first network available, followed by a wave of partners in the autumn including ESB EV Solutions, LiFe, and Hubsta. The new system was designed by Zap-Map, an app which drivers can currently use to locate chargers across the UK. Using Zap-Pay, EV drivers will be able to search, plan, and pay for their EV journeys all in one place, the firm said." https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4019748/zap-pay-app-promises-seamless-payment-ev-charging You can listen to all 884 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #709 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 26th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Some people think this is a podcast about EVs, I like to think it's about hope. For a cleaner, sustainable future where we're not burning something which we know will run out, and drive fast fun electric cars. HAVE ALL TESLA MODEL Y OWNERS BEEN TOLD TO 'PREPARE'? Following yesterday's podcast where we heard from listeners and people on twitter who confirmed their Model Y AWD Performance cars were being prepared for delivery, now we have an up date on the story. It seems people who want the RWD Long Range version are also getting their "prepare for delivery" emails. The questions we need to ask is, has anyone who bought a Model Y NOT received their email? The AWD Long Range Performance and AWD Long Range were supposed to be the two models which were first going into production and the ones most likely to deliver in March. In fact the Founders Editions would technically be first. If we can believe Twitter, those who ordered the Long Range RWD with 5 seat configuration have had their email from Tesla, or in some cases, no email but their Tesla account has updated when they checked. And that's interesting because the LR RWD is no longer available to order online, despite those who originally ordered it being told Fall 2020. At the launch last year it was shown on the presentation as having 300 miles but remember since then, the Dual Motor AWD now has a range of 315 miles. What about those who ordered the 7-seat configuration? If Twitter is to be believed, some people have had 'Prepare for delivery' whilst others have been offered the following: "If you’d like to take delivery of your Model Y next month, you can adjust your order to the standard five-seat interior, removing the $3,000 seven-seat interior upgrade cost. Contact a Tesla adviser to update your order today." Is this just a courtesy note? Could it mean they are backing away from 7 seats? There's no evidence for that. TESLA'S PROJECT ROADRUNNER "Tesla's secret Roadrunner battery project promises cheap and energy-dense batteries that will extend vehicle range, reduce car prices and possibly jolt Tesla to new highs. There's talk that a vehicle equipped with these batteries may even be revealed at Tesla's Battery Day event this April." reports Eric Loveday at InsideEVs: "The latest intel on Tesla's improved battery technology suggests that the targets are reduced costs (that magical $100 per kWh figure is possibly within Tesla's grasp) and improved energy density. In fact, the pace is so rapid that there seems to be some indication that a vehicle with these advanced batteries will be shown in less than two month's time." Of course many people have pointed out the range quoted on future vehicles are not possible with current energy density without very large battery packs. So the Roadster at 620 miles, and the Cybertruck at 500 miles, both rely on future technology to make it to market. Even the Semi and the Plaid Model S could be transformed with better batteries. SAMSUNG SDI REPORTEDLY IN BATTERY SUPPLY TALKS WITH RIVIAN "South Korea’s leading lithium-ion battery maker Samsung SDI is in talks with US-based electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian for a deal to supply the latter with batteries, according to industry sources on Thursday." reports Korea Herald: "Although the value of the contract has not been revealed, industry sources say Samsung could supply batteries for an estimated 100,000 electric vans to be commercialized later this year through 2024." http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200227000345 TURNPIKE AUTHORITY TEAMS WITH TESLA TO MORE THAN TRIPLE EV CHARGERS "New Jersey Turnpike Authority commissioners approved an agreement Tuesday that will bring new electric vehicle charging stations to eight Turnpike service areas, increasing the total of EV chargers on the Turnpike from 20 to 76." according to NJ Biz: "The authority says the licensing agreement allows Tesla to install eight V3 Superchargers, the newest version of the company’s proprietary charging technology, at each of six service areas and to double the number of Superchargers already in place at two other service areas. Tesla also will build the utility infrastructure necessary for third-party providers to install at least two dozen additional non-Tesla charging stations on the Turnpike. Once all the Tesla charging stations called for in the licensing agreement have been installed, there will be electric vehicle charging facilities at nine of the 12 New Jersey Turnpike service areas." Eight V3's at six locations is 48, other news outlets said that was 64 because at the Cranbury Supercharger and the East Burnswick they're swapping out old V2's for V3's, making 64 in total. https://njbiz.com/turnpike-authority-teams-tesla-triple-ev-chargers/ POLESTAR CEO CALLS OUT INDUSTRY, GOV’T, CONSUMERS FOR SLOW EV PACE "Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath dreads the thought of spending time at next week’s Geneva auto show defending Volvo’s decision to launch a stand-alone electrified brand." he tells Automotive News Europe: "“How long will we have to explain that it's not a crazy idea to create a new electric car company, that type of discussion has me fed up. We shouldn't still be questioning this.” https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/polestar-ceo-calls-out-industry-govt-consumers-slow-ev-pace POLESTAR PRECEPT REVEALED "Polestar has revealed its latest concept model, Precept. It's a model that isn't set to join the range that currently features the 1 and 2, but it does provide hints as to the brands next model." reports Next Green Car: "To minimise distractions, the screen will show only basic information until the car's sensors track the driver's eyes looking at it. By tracking the driver's sight lines, it will adjust displays depending on the view required. Additional sensors will also detect when a hand is approaching it, when more information will be displayed, buttons made larger for easier use, and the screen will become brighter." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8869/polestar-precept-revealed/ LORDSTOWN MOTORS ELECTRIC PICKUP NABS FIRST CUSTOMER IN FIRST ENERGY "Lordstown Motors, a product of General Motors' sale of its Lordstown, Ohio manufacturing facility, has a customer." wrrites CNET: "First Energy has signed a letter of intent to purchase 250 Endurance electric pickup trucks. On the decision, First Energy said it's "proud to partner" with Lordstown Motors and hopes to support electric car growth in the areas it does business. The company operates in the midwest and mid-atlantic regions." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/lordstown-motors-endurance-electric-pickup-first-energy/ DS 9 DUE WITH TRIO OF PHEV POWERTRAINS "DS Automobiles has revealed its new model – the DS 9. Looking to see the DS name return to the executive saloon market, the DS 9 will feature the firm’s E-Tense plug-in hybrid technology." says Zap Map in the UK: "Featuring an 11.9 kWh battery, the DS 9 will be able to cover between 25 and 31 miles on electric power alone. DS 9 will be added to shortly after launch with an additional two E-Tense PHEV options. The first will be two-wheel drive and feature an increased range, while the second will be a four-wheel drive model with 360 hp on tap." https://www.zap-map.com/ds-9-due-with-trio-of-phev-powertrains/ VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG R PLUG-IN HYBRID COMING TO GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Volkswagen ramps up its electrified campaign in 2020: with the world premiere of the new Touareg R at the Geneva Motor Show, the brand’s top-of-the-range model now also features a plug-in hybrid drive. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the new SUV always starts in electric E-MODE for zero emissions. The all-round talent can be driven at up to 140 km/h using electric power; above this speed, the turbocharged V6 petrol engine (TSI) supplements the electric drive motor. The Touareg R will cover most commuter distances fully electrically. The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine (250 kW/340 PS), the electric drive motor (100kW/136 PS) and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh) built into the luggage compartment underbody. An 8-speed automatic gearbox (with Tiptronic) and a transfer box transmit the power to the standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Touareg R is designed for a superior maximum trailer weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. it is the first Volkswagen R model to feature a plug-in hybrid drive. It is also the first time a hybrid model has been the most highly-powered Volkswagen. Show #676 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 24th January 2020. VW CEO SAYS RACE IS ON WITH TESLA "Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess is sending a message to Elon Musk: We are coming for Tesla." repotrs Automotive News Europe: "VW is buying software companies and ramping up investments in sustainable vehicles and battery cells, Diess said Friday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Tesla's market value surpassed VW's for the first time this week, even as the U.S. company sells a fraction of the cars VW produces and has yet to record an annual profit.Diess last week called on his top managers to speed up overhaul efforts to make the company more agile or risk being pushed aside." He said: ""It's an open race. The company which adopts fastest and is most innovative but also which has enough scale in the new world will make the race. 2020 for the auto industry will be a very difficult year, But we're doing the right things to be competitive." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-ceo-says-race-tesla THE UK NOW HAS 30,000 EV CHARGING CONNECTORS "The United Kingdom‘s electric vehicle charging network continues to grow. There are now more than 30,000 EV charging connectors located across the nation, according to a tweet from UK-based online vehicle charging point locator Zap-Map." says The Next Web: "As of today, there are now 30,140 connectors spread across 10,753 locations, listed on Zap-Map. Trends show the recent growth in the UK EV charging network, particularly over the past 3 years, is a result of fast, rapid, and ultra-rapid charge points being installed." https://thenextweb.com/cars/2020/01/24/electric-vehicle-charging-connectors-uk-30000-zap-map-ev/ CHARGING NETWORKS FINANCE GROWTH AS EV SALES BOOM "Fastned, the charging company which is building a European network of fast charging stations for electric vehicles, has exceeded its fundraising target as it expands the number of sites it operates." reports Asset Finance Intl: "Around €12 million has been raised from 1,000 subscribers in a bond issue, four times the minimum of €3 million that Fastned wanted to raise. Fastned currently has around 114 stations operational in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK and wants to expand to the rest of Europe, with an initial focus on Belgium, Switzerland and France. It recently received approval for 13 motorway locations in Belgium, which are part of a collaboration with the Highway and Traffic Agency to provide motorway parking in Flanders with fast charging stations." https://www.assetfinanceinternational.com/index.php/auto-finance/auto-emea/auto-emea-articles/19074-charging-networks-finance-growth-as-ev-sales-boom MG ZS EV GARNERS 2,800 BOOKINGS IN 27 DAYS "MG (Morris Garages) Motor India garnered 2,800 bookings for the new ZS electric vehicle in 27 days during the first round of bookings. The carmaker claims that the number of bookings received for the ZS EV outpaced the total number of electric vehicles sold in India in 2019." reports IndiaToday.in: "The deliveries of MG ZS electric vehicle will start on January 27 across Delhi/NCR, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad." https://www.indiatoday.in/auto/latest-auto-news/story/mg-zs-ev-garners-2800-bookings-in-27-days-check-out-all-the-details-here-1639514-2020-01-23 TESLA FINALLY DECLARES VICTORY OVER TERRIBLE LAW "According to the Associated Press, a deal has just been made between Tesla and the state of Michigan." says CarBuzz: "The agreement will allow Tesla to deliver vehicles in Michigan. There does appear to be a catch: Tesla buyers will have to have their vehicles titled in another state and then transferred to Michigan. Furthermore, the vehicles will be serviced and sold by a Tesla subsidiary. Tesla hasn't been completely absent from Michigan, home to America's Big Three automakers. In the Detroit suburb of Troy, there's a so-called "gallery" Tesla store at a local mall. Anyone can walk in and look around, but employees are forbidden from discussing pricing, leasing, or any other sales-related topics." https://carbuzz.com/news/tesla-finally-declares-victory-over-terrible-law AUDI SHOWCASES MOBILE EV CHARGING FACILITY AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi has provided the mobility and charging stations solutions at the World Economic Forum in Davos and 90 per cent of the shuttle fleet were electrified models, claims the company." reported by Economic Times: "The auto company used mobile charging containers made with used Audi e-tron batteries, specially developed for the purpose. It claims using roughly 100 electrified Audi models in combination with the shipping containers for charging allowed the company to operate a virtually CO2-neutral shuttle fleet for the Davos event. Audi claims that it has plans to use the mobile charging stations in 20 further cases in 2020 alone, with one being the Formula E in Rome." https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/passenger-vehicle/cars/audi-showcases-mobile-ev-charging-facility-at-world-economic-forum/73581670 UBER LANDS ELECTRIC CAR DEAL WITH NISSAN "Uber will offer drivers in the U.K. electric cars from Nissan at a discount, the company said Friday, as it faces a potential ban in London."n according to CNBC: "The ride-hailing operator has signed an agreement with Nissan to introduce a fleet of 2,000 of the Japanese automaker's Leaf hatchbacks for drivers using its app in Britain. While the deal is technically open to all U.K. drivers, it's primarily targeted at those working in London. The deal with Nissan arrives at a difficult time for the company, which faces being blocked in the U.K.'s capital after Transport for London (TfL) stripped it of its license. Uber has since appealed the move, and can continue operating in the city while it fights the ban in the courts." https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/01/23/uber-signs-electric-car-deal-with-nissan-in-uk-as-it-fights-london-ban.html DAIMLER TO BUILD 50,000 MERCEDES EQC MODELS THIS YEAR "Daimler on Thursday said it plans to build 50,000 Mercedes EQC electric cars this year, denying a report in Manager Magazin which claimed it had been forced to pare back its 2020 production targets due to battery supply problems." says Reuters today: "Manager Magazin said Mercedes had slashed its production target to 30,000 from about 60,000 because of a shortage of battery cells from LG Chem. A Daimler spokesman said its production plans for 2020 had not been amended. Daimler’s works council chief Michael Brecht told Manager Magazin that one of the reasons the company is struggling to meet battery demand is because Tesla bought Grohmann Engineering, a battery automation specialist hired by Mercedes-Benz to build up its own battery manufacturing capacity. This caused problems for Daimler which was in the midst of ramping up production at its electric vehicle battery production unit Deutsche Accumotive." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-daimler-electric-eqc/mercedes-halves-ev-production-target-due-to-battery-shortage-manager-magazin-idUSKBN1ZM1SA NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… With increasing attacks on EVs and vandalism caught on camera, why do some people have a problem with EVs? This is Episode 30 of ‘EV Musings' a podcast about Electric Vehicles and things that are interesting to Electric Vehicle owners On our podcast today we'll be looking at the major apps you can use to help you identify, locate and track charge points. Not charging apps but Charger apps. A subtle difference. There are lots of apps out there that help you start a charge. Just about every charge provider has one. They usually have maps and options to initiate and stop a charge. We're not looking at those today. We're looking at non-specific apps that let an EV owner or driver see where ANY charger is and navigate there to use it. FREMONT FACTORY BEING PREPPED FOR TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION, MODEL S REFRESH "Tesla is expected to produce the new Model Y at the Fremont factory according to a CNBC report" says CNBC: "Tesla officially hasn't announced where it will produce the Model Y. The automaker says it's considering both the Tesla Factory in California and Gigafactory in Nevada. Because Model Y shares a lot of parts with the Model 3, Fremont could be a wise choice, although the factory is getting cramped. Unofficial sources say that Tesla "has barely begun to place orders for new equipment to manufacture the Model Y. In 2019, Tesla would like to deliver at least 360,000 cars, compared to around 245,000 in 2018." https://insideevs.com/news/352061/fremont-tesla-model-y-production-model-s-refresh/ TESLA HAS CATCHING UP TO DO "Tesla Inc has “a lot of catching up” to do in order to achieve a record quarter, news website Electrek reported on Wednesday, citing Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk’s leaked email to employees." says REuters: "“While our demand is strong, we have a lot of vehicle deliveries to catch up to in order to have a successful quarter,” Musk wrote in the mail. “We also need to address the total cost of getting a car from our factory to the customer. Last quarter, there were many expedites fees and routing inefficiencies that led to higher than expected delivery costs. This makes it much harder for to* break even. “Per my earlier email, if we execute well, Q2 will be an all-time record for Tesla vehicle deliveries and an awesome victory!!” https://electrek.co/2019/05/29/tesla-demand-deliveries-catch-up-record-quarter-elon-musk-leaked-email/ EV CHARGING SITES OUTNUMBER PETROL STATIONS FOR FIRST TIME "New figures from Zap-Map reveal the extent of the UK’s electric vehicle revolution, with the number of public charging locations now surpassing petrol stations for the first time. Data from Zap-Map shows that as of 22 May, there are 8,471 charging locations across the UK, hosting a total of 13,613 charging devices. In contrast, as of the end of April, there are currently only 8,400 petrol stations in the UK, a figure which is continuing to decline. There has been huge growth in the UK public EV charge point market in the past 12 months, with the number of locations increasing 57% in that time. https://www.zap-map.com/ev-charging-sites-outnumber-petrol-stations-for-first-time/ CHINA-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 PRICE ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED ON FRIDAY "Bloomberg reports that Tesla is expected to announce prices of the China-made base Tesla Model 3 on Friday, May 31." reports InsideEVs: "The base Model 3 will be produced at the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, which allows it to avoid the 15% import tax and catch onto Chinese subsidies for New Energy Vehicles. Currently, the cheapest Model 3 in China starts at 377,000 yuan (≈$54,542). Bloomberg says that the new price could be 300,000-350,000 yuan (≈$43,400-50,634) before subsidies. The pricing announcement could be related to the surprise scheduled for May 31, but as everyone knows the Model 3 produced locally will be cheaper than imported, it's hard to say what the surprise really will be." https://insideevs.com/news/351910/china-made-tesla-model-3-price/ GM PLANS OWN LARGE EV CHARGING NETWORK "GM confirmed today that it plans to its own large electric car charging network with thousands of fast-charging stations in the US, but the automaker apparently can’t be bothered to invest in it itself." writes Fred for Electrek: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network." CNN reports: "The American automaker confirmed today that it is teaming up with Bechtel, the largest construction company in the US, “to build thousands of electric vehicle fast-charging stations” across the United States as part of a new charging network. Neither company plans to put money into this project, though. The two companies will create a separate corporation to build the charging network and other companies are being invited to invest in it. Neither GM nor Bechtel would name potential investors while discussions are still ongoing.”" https://electrek.co/2019/05/28/gm-ev-charging-network/ ROLEC, EV.ENERGY UNVEIL NEW SMART CHARGER AND MOBILE APP UK: "Rolec EV is launching a new range of smart home EV chargers that allow drivers to manage charging through an app. The EV HomeSmart chargers will be integrated with the EV.Energy cloud-based backend, and are eligible under Office for Low Emission Vehicles' (OLEV) grant scheme." reports Current NEws: "Drivers will be able to programme the charger to charge at specific times, with the EV.Energy app also integrating with a homeowner's electricity provider to charge at the cheapest rate. Charging history will be available to see through the app, including live charging status, electricity used in kWh, energy costs and carbon savings. The chargers are enabled at speeds of 3.6kW or 7.2kW and are being launched as part of the WallPod EV charging portfolio. It’s the second addition to the portfolio announced this month, with a range of solar powered chargers also being launched." https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/rolec-ev-energy-unveil-new-smart-charger-and-mobile-app TESLA MODEL 3 GETS CERTIFIED IN AUSTRALIA, ORDERS SHOULD OPEN SOON CleanTEchnica says: "On Friday, Tesla received notification from the Australian Government that the company’s application to sell Model 3’s in Australia was approved. From looking at the application, Tesla only applied for the 1726 kg and 1856 kg weights, which correspond to the Long Range Rear Wheel Drive, Long Range All Wheel Drive, and Performance All Wheel Drive models, so the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus won’t be coming to Australia right yet — probably in a few months after they work through the backlog of orders for the higher-end models." USED EV PRICES INCREASE IN UK "Prices of second-hand electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring as demand outstrips supply" says InsideEVs: "electric vehicles - also known as EVs - are rocketing in value, with prices growing 11 percent. In contrast, the average price growth rate for all vehicles has slowed to 1.5 percent - the lowest rate for almost two years." KIA RELEASES REVISED NIRO HYBRID MODELS IN EUROPE "Kia has now started selling the revised versions of the Niro Hybrid and the Niro Plug-in Hybrid that they presented at the Geneva Motor Show." reports electrive.com: "The 2020 models of the two hybrid models can be ordered in the UK from 1 July, where prices start at £24,590 for the Niro Hybrid and £31,945 for the Niro Plug-in Hybrid. The cosmetic changes to Kia’s hybrid models include a revamping of the interior and exterior designs so that the hybrids look more like the fully-electric e-Niro. In Germany, prices start at 26,990 Euro (Niro Hybrid) or 33,990 Euro (Niro Plug-in Hybrid) and will be available from dealers at the end of July." Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 3rd August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. First and foremost, I want to say thank you. I know you've tuned in for the news but bear with me. This is episode 200 and it has been a pleasure every day, without skipping a day to research and write this little show. As a few of you know, making radio shows is what i do for a living and I'm fortunate to work on two of the UK's most popular radio stations. So going from the safety of that during the day and coming home every night to make you a podcast was terrifying, because I had no idea if this would ever find an audience. Largely because in the first month literally nobody listened. But as the weeks went by it picked up, and I'm enormously grateful for that and your continued to support. But what do I mean by support? Well I shall spill the beans at the end of today's show. But I'll just say that thanks to you listening, it looks like I can connect with some folk in the EV community who want to help me out with the increasing podcast hosting costs. More at the end and if you're not bothered, you can always turn it off early! We'll get to all the reaction from the Tesla earning call just a tick. ORDER BOOKS OPEN FOR HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC "Hyundai’s Kona Electric is now available to order in the UK via the company’s Click to Buy platform, with the new EV offered in two battery configurations." according to charging website Zap Map: "initially rolled out on the online-only service, the Kona Electric will be available through dealerships from next year. Until then, buyers will have to order via the website, with first deliveries expected from September." At the time of recording all the shipping dates have slipped back to 24 weeks apart from one spec. So the 39kWh SE, 39kWh Premium with 2 Tone Roof, 64kWh Premium, 64kWh Premium with 2 Tone Roof, 64kWh Premium SE, and 64kWh Premium SE with 2 tone roof all 24 weeks. So that has definitely slipped back from when i looked in the morning. If you're in a hurry the only spec is Premium 39kWh and only if you get it in Solid Black or Metallic White, Blue or Red. https://www.zap-map.com/order-books-open-for-hyundais-kona-electric/ TRUMP ADMINISTRATION UNVEILS ITS PLAN TO RELAX CAR POLLUTION RULES "The Trump administration on Thursday put forth its long-awaited proposal to freeze antipollution and fuel-efficiency standards for cars, significantly weakening one of President Barack Obama’s signature policies to combat global warming." writes the New York Times: "The proposed new rules would also challenge the right of states like California to set their own, more stringent tailpipe pollution standards, setting the stage for a legal clash that could ultimately split the nation’s auto market in two. The move immediately faced opposition from an unusual mix of critics — including not only environmentalists and consumer groups but auto-industry representatives as well as individual states — who are now launching efforts to change the plan before it is finalized." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/02/climate/trump-auto-emissions-california.html ICELAND’S NEW HYDROGEN PLANT COULD SUPPLY CARS AND BUSES ACROSS THE NATION "An Icelandic power company says its new electrolyser will be able to supply every hydrogen car and bus currently operating across the country." says Jonny Bairstow for Energy live News: "ON Power says its facility, which is being installed at the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant in the south-west of the country, will enter operation by the end of August. It believes the sale of hydrogen for use in vehicles could begin as early as October, meaning filling stations providing the gas would no longer have to wholly rely on imports. The firm plans to distribute the hydrogen in bottles to prevent losses in transport and admits it does not expect the operation to be immediately profitable but instead aims to catalyse the growth of a successful market for clean energy in the future. Bosses at the company say hydrogen cars do not need to compete with electric vehicles and imagine an ideal low carbon vehicle in the future could be powered primarily by electricity but be able to switch over to hydrogen during longer journeys." https://www.energylivenews.com/2018/08/02/icelands-new-hydrogen-plant-could-supply-cars-and-buses-across-the-nation/ VOLKSWAGEN MULLS OWN PRODUCTION OF BATTERY CELLS IN EUROPE "Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is eyeing producing its own solid state battery cells, with possible serial production from 2024 or 2025, its chief executive said on Wednesday." according to a Reuters report: "A solid state battery factory would likely be in Europe, or even in Germany under the right conditions, Diess said. Battery cells are a key battleground in the automotive industry as it shifts to electric mobility." VW CEO Herbert Diess: "We must not make ourselves dependent on a few Asian manufacturers in the long term.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-results-batteries/volkswagen-mulls-own-production-of-battery-cells-in-europe-idUSKBN1KM4FN VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS RECALL OF 124,000 ELECTRIC CARS "A charger containing traces of cadmium is causing headaches for Volkswagen, which says that because of the presence of the carcinogenic metal, the German automaker may be forced to recall 124,000 electric and hybrid vehicles." according to Bridie Schmidt, reneweconomy.com.au A spokesman for the group: "Clarification is under way for a recall order by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority." "Usage of cadmium, a metal used in electric appliances like televisions, has been banned in most types of car parts. An unidentified supplier has however delivered a batch of battery chargers containing cadmium, which has been installed in some electric and hybrid cars of the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands between 2013 and June 2018." says Phys.org https://reneweconomy.com.au/volkswagen-threatens-recall-of-124000-electric-cars-86876/ ELON MUSK MAKES THE ‘MOST VALUABLE APOLOGY OF ALL TIME’ "Wall Street is happy over Tesla's quarterly results and guidance, but Elon Musk's apologies to multiple analysts may even be more important to the company's shares and investor sentiment." says Tae Kim for CNBC.com: "On Wednesday's post-earnings conference call, Tesla took its first questions from the two analysts Musk had dismissed three months earlier, when the company reported first-quarter results." That was the day of the now-famous "boring, bonehead questions" line. Analyst Alexander Potter said in a note to clients Wednesday. "This could be the start of something big. A few years from now, investors may conclude that 2Q18 was the quarter in which Tesla cemented its position as a truly formidable player in the global automotive market." HERE ARE THE TOP 5 TRADE-INS FOR TESLA MODEL 3S "The top five models traded in are the BMW 3 Series, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius. There's no specific breakdown in trim, but all five have base MSRPs lower than available Model 3s. The long-awaited $35,000 Tesla isn't available yet" reports Reese for Autoblog. ANOTHER TESLA SOFTWARE UPDATE COMING “Tesla is turning its cars into gaming devices. The firm’s next software update will add, among other features, at least three classic Atari games passengers will be able to play on the dash-mounted touchscreen. The update is coming soon to the Model 3, the Model S, and the Model X." according to Digital Trends: "Quizzed by journalists, he revealed he hopes to include Pole Position, Tempest, and Missile Command, games released in 1982, 1981, and 1980, respectively. While Atari games represent the highlight of V9.0, the update will include other important features outside of the infotainment system including what Musk calls full self-driving features for certain vehicles. This bolsters (but doesn’t confirm) earlier rumors claiming the next version of Autopilot will transition into a level-three system, meaning the driver will be able to take his or her hands off the wheel completely when the right conditions are met. Audi’s Traffic Jam Assist technology is an example of a level-three system. The Autopilot interface will evolve with the update, too." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesla-v90-adds-atari-games-camper-mode-better-autopilot/ A plug for tomorrow, on Saturdays now I'm trying to always bring you an interview. It feels right to do it at the weekend, all our routines are different and not doing the commute to work. Tomorrow it's a company called CleanCar which is working with large fleets to use a piece of hardware which tracks drivers routes and journeys, then recommends which type or EV or Plug In is best. The future of motoring looks set to be increasingly electric with the Government committed to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. That commitment was strengthened this month with the unveiling of a new Road to Zero strategy aimed at boosting the country's electric vehicle infrastructure with proposals including fitting chargers in new developments, offices and even lampposts. But how does buying and running an electric car compare to petrol and diesel and what might you have to consider when making the switch? Electricity can certainly be cheaper than traditional fuels but how do you navigate the range of charging options available? There're also a number of Government grants to consider- what's on offer and how can you apply? Joining Paul Lewis are Consumer Editor at What Car?, Claire Evans, Head of Go Ultra Low, Poppy Welch and Director of Zap Map, Melanie Shufflebotham. Saturday 24th March 2018. NISSAN AIMS TO SELL 1 MILLION EVS ANNUALLY BY 2022 According to Business Insider: “Nissan Motor Co on Friday said it planned to sell 1 million electric vehicles annually by 2022, including all-battery EVs and cars powered by its "e-Power" petrol hybrid technology. During that period, the Japanese automaker said it would develop eight new all-battery EVs, including four models for China, where it is planning to expand. Its luxury Infiniti brand would begin carrying new electric models from 2021, it added. Nissan and its automaking partners, France's Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors Corp , together plan to launch 12 electric models as part of their strategy to achieve annual vehicle sales totaling 14 million units by 2022, compared with 10.6 million units in 2017.” AND THEY WANT TO LIGHT UP OLD BATTERIES And sticking with Nissan, they are still thinking about how to use old LEAF batteries. You may remember many of the early cars were on battery leases so if they’re back with Nissan now, what to do with them? There’s always home storage. But what about using them for light? Slashgear point out: They’ll be installing new street lighting in Namie, a Japanese town heavily affected by both the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. By using solar panels and LEDs, the custom lamps will be completely independent from the traditional main power grid, and require no electric cables or outlets” “The design resembles a stylized shepherd’s crook, with the solar panel on the upper section and a sheet of LED lights underneath. In the base, battery packs repurposed from old electric cars like the Nissan Leaf store the electricity generated from the sun during the day, and then release it to power the lights at night. The lamps stand just over nine feet high.” NEW ALL ELECTRIC BENTLEY HAS MISSION E HELP Bentley are moving on with their plan for an all-electric luxury 4-door coupe. And they’ll be using some of the investment already poured into Porsche by the VW group, for their Mission E car. Evo say: “Bentley has already confirmed that it will offer electrified versions of its entire current model range by 2025. The move to develop a new all-electric flagship in addition to this comes as the company seeks to reposition itself as a luxury and technology brand PEER TO PEER EV CHARGING Coming via Fleet News: “Zap-Map has launched a peer-to-peer EV charging network, allowing charge point owners to share electricity with other registered users. Almost 50% of EV drivers told Zap-Map that they were willing to share their home charging with other users, resulting in around 60,000 chargers that could be added to the network. The initiative, called Zap-Home, also provides owners with the opportunity to earn money by sharing their charger. Registered users can set a cost per charge, payable via PayPal.Me. Zap-Map’s chief technology officer Dr Ben Lane said: “Of our 60,000 monthly userbase, we know that around half are willing to share their home point with other Zap-Map users. "Businesses are particularly proactive with 5% of workplace charging points already. I-PACE LAPS MONACO AT NIGHT If you’re watching Youtube this weekend, as long as great new videos from Fully Charged and Carwow reviewing the new Nissan LEAF, there’s a new Jaguary I-PACE video which looks…and sounds…great. Motor 1 say: The video shows the I-Pace taking to the streets of Monaco and driving past nighttime revellers, Jaguar's Formula E mechanics hard at work in the garage and even a few sleepy yacht crews on the way round the iconic corners. The real danger around the track appears to be from street sweepers, allowing the Jaguar to entirely coincidentally show o
