#471: Body By Cronenberg, Pt. 2 — The Shrouds

Over the decades, David Cronenberg has carved a distinctive and provocative filmography out of his interest in human decay and death, up to and including his new THE SHROUDS, a late-career entry in the writer-director's body-horror canon. It's a film that left some of us confounded in a way that our returning guest, critic Charles Bramesco, might argue is part of its Cronenbergian appeal; but placing it next to THE FLY in Connections clarifies how much it's simply an evolution of the same pet themes Cronenberg has been circling since 1986 (and earlier), from overlapping obsessions with the mutability of bodies and technology, to the horror and guilt of watching a loved one deteriorate before our very eyes. And in Your Next Picture Show, we're inspired to talk over another recent, highly personal project from an elder-statesman auteur that received a mixed reception, and which we never got to cover on the show: Francis Ford Coppola's MEGALOPOLIS. Please share your thoughts about THE FLY, THE SHROUDS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. The way David Cronenberg's new THE SHROUDS splices together unsettling ideas about technology and bodily transformation made us think of… well, a lot of his filmography, but the film's visceral interest in how the human body decays feels directly connected to the director's unlikeliest hit, his remake of THE FLY. We're joined this week by critic and our nascent “gross and scary” correspondent Charles Bramesco to teleport back to 1986 and examine what lies beneath the rotting flesh of THE FLY, from its tender central relationship to its oozing physical effects to its Howard Shore score, that makes it a distinctly Cronenbergian grossout. Then in Feedback, a listener uses our recent discussion of THE THIN MAN to broach a bigger question about what we value most in our mystery stories.  Please share your thoughts about THE FLY, THE SHROUDS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Hello New Hollywood hippies and malaise monkeys and all the ships at sea and welcome to A Very Good Year. If you've been listening you know we're retiring A Very Good Year and coming back with a whole new show for 2025.In the meantime we're looking back at the past 100 episodes by revisiting some of our favorite guests and our favorite movies by decade. This episode is massive, but it's the 1970s, arguably the greatest decade for film in the entire short life of the medium. The 70s years were always the first to go when we were booking guests for the show and they do not disappoint. In this episode we've got podcasting superhero Blake Howard, author Charles Bramesco, author Alexandra Heller-Nichols, production designer Judy Becker who is currently getting rave reviews for The Brutalist, filmmaker Zach Clark, writer Jason Diamond, podcaster Brian Saur, writer/director Isabel Sandoval, historian Kevin Kruse, critic Sean Burns, writer/director and actor Noah Seegan, writer Alexandra West, critic Jordan Hoffman, media superstar Soraya Nadia McDonald, critic Katie Rife, author Scott Drebit, and director of photography Bradford Young with what might be the movie that has impacted me the most across the entire series. Enjoy! Osgood Perkins' new LONGLEGS shares some clear narrative and thematic DNA with THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, but it's much more bizarre and divisive in its approach to horror-adjacent serial killer storytelling than Jonathan Demme's crowd-pleasing, Oscar-sweeping hit. We're joined again this week by critic and author Charles Bramesco to talk through the varying degrees to which we vibed with Perkins' style and Nicolas Cage's central performance, before bringing LONGLEGS' predecessor back into the conversation to compare the points of overlap and distinction between these two films about newbie female FBI agents, unconventional serial killers, and the traumatic backstories that drive them both. And in Your Next Picture Show we take stock of Oz Perkins' small but already idiosyncratic directorial filmography to date.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, LONGLEGS,  or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. There's no doubt that director Osgood Perkins had Jonathan Demme's THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS in mind when he made the new LONGLEGS, but there are as many fascinating contrasts as there are comparisons between these two films about inexperienced female FBI agents and seasoned serial killers. But before getting into those next episode, this week we're joined by critic and author Charles Bramesco for an in-depth revisitation of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS that digs into how the “Demme Touch” elevated a potentially lurid procedural to an Oscar-sweeping sensation, why its artful exploration of trauma inspired a legion of imitators, and how its sidestepping of trans identity plays in an era that's much more attuned to that conversation. And in Feedback, a listener deconstructs a couple of our recent pairings and reconstructs them as inversions of the same story.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, LONGLEGS,  or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Bela Tarr's SATANTANGO is 7 hours and 20 minutes long, and at least one of our hosts endured the entire film in one butt-numbing sitting. And lest you think that 7+ hours flies by, it's also a quintessential example of slow cinema at its bleakest and most punishing. We discuss the nature of “endurance cinema,” how best to endure this particular example, and the scene that Marc found to be the hardest to watch in all of Unwatchables history. Film critic and author Charles Bramesco had to look at movies in a new and different way while researching and writing his new book, "Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes" (out this week) which examines filmmaking through the prism of color. And one of his favorite eras, for that book and as a film lover in general, is the 1970s - so he selected 1971, a year in which the movies were smart, daring, experimental, and (at least in his top five) extremely horny. Charles Bramesco is a writer living in Brooklyn, New York. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Guardian and many. many others. Taking you from the earliest feature films to today, Colours of Film introduces 50 iconic movies and explains the pivotal role that colour played in their success. The use of colour is an essential part of film. It has the power to evoke powerful emotions, provide subtle psychological symbolism and act as a narrative device.Wes Anderson's pastels and muted tones are aesthetically pleasing, but his careful use of colour also acts as a shorthand for interpreting emotion. And let's not forget Schindler's List (1993, dir. Steven Spielberg), in which a bold flash of red against an otherwise black-and-white film is used as a powerful symbol of life, survival and death. In Colours of Film, film critic Charles Bramesco introduces an element of cinema that is often overlooked, yet has been used in extraordinary ways. Using infographic colour palettes, and stills from the movies, this is a lively and fresh approach to film for cinema-goers and colour lovers alike. He also explores in fascinating detail how the development of technologies have shaped the course of modern cinema, from how the feud between Kodak and Fujifilm shaped the colour palettes of the 20th Century's greatest filmakers, to how the advent of computer technology is creating a digital wonderland for modern directors in which anything is possible.Filled with sparkling insights and fascinating accounts from the history of cinema, Colours of Film is an indispensable guide to one of the most important visual elements in the medium of film.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. We're back! Film critic and friend Charles Bramesco joins Manuela to talk about the inspiring and mind-boggling talent of Nicolas Cage, who since the 80s has been bringing his maximalist acting style to shake up Hollywood. They discuss in particular Martin Scorsese's BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, John Woo's FACE/OFF and Panos Cosmatos's MANDY, and how each of these films reveals a different register for Cage to inhabit and reinvent. There’s a distinctly gothic flavour to this week’s Truth & Movies, as we check in with Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo remake before setting a course to Norway circa the early 1990s, where there’s all kinds of devilry afoot in Jonas Åkerlund’s black metal biopic Lords of Chaos. Michael Leader, Adam Woodward and – making his T&M debut – Charles Bramesco are on hand to offer their thoughts on those, and there’s a welcome return to Burton’s retro-camp alien invasion caper, Mars Attacks!, for Film Club. Hey, friends! Happy 2019, and welcome to another year of Mousterpiece Cinema! We're kicking off the new year by commemorating the 25th anniversary of a film that opened on the first Friday in January to almost entirely harsh, very negative reviews. But is it possible that this film was unfairly maligned by critics back in early 1994? The film in question is the cult comedy Cabin Boy, starring Chris Elliott as one of the infamous fancy lads who has to go on a unique quest to become a man, encountering talk-show hosts who sell monkeys, six-armed women, giants, iceberg monsters, and, of course, Andy Richter. Scott and Josh are joined by friend of the show Charles Bramesco for the first episode of the new year to talk about whether or not this film is as good as its cult reputation suggests, if critics had it right the first time, deepfakes, and, of course, a healthy amount of U Talkin' U2 To Me? references. Check out the new show now!

Hey, friends! It's time for another episode of Mousterpiece Cinema in which Josh and Scott go back and revisit a title that was already discussed on the podcast. This time, they're going back to a movie that Josh talked about in 2012, the 1940 animated classic Fantasia. They're joined on the new show by Charles Bramesco of Vulture, The Guardian, and the New York Times, to talk all things Fantasia, from the film's ambition to its animation style, Deems Taylor, and yes, the problematic elements of the "Pastoral Symphony" sequence. Has Josh's take on the film changed in 6 years? Is he once again the most critical of the film? Does it even matter to be critical of a film as remarkably daring as this one? Find out now!
