An odd married couple take on Divine, an infamous Baltimore criminal figure, in an effort to take her persona as the "Filthiest Person Alive" away from her.Pink Flamingos is this year's Fucked Up February finale and it certainly has a cult following for a reason. This movie, while it may have a comedic appeal to certain audiences, does have several controversial and disturbing scenes that land it in Fucked Up February. The film is directed by John Waters and stars actor and drag queen, Divine. As the characters go out of their way to be "filthy", they do live up to the word in every possible way with perverse acts and evil plots. Recorded a week and a half after David Lynch's death, this episode is a mishmash of interviews with Cinema of the Dam'd programmers Jen Bronson and Matt Cornell and clips of what we showed during our 15 hour twitch marathon. We spoke about our Lynch faves, what he means to us, and where our head was at after watching so much of his work at once (it was pretty divine). Lynch's death hit hard and this won't be the last time I feature him on Somebody's Watching.Show Notes:Cinema of the Dam'dJennifer's Bronson's InstagramMatt Cornell's InstagramThe Squid and the Whale (2005)The Straight Story (1999)Blue Velvet (1986)Blue Velvet edited for televisionTwin Peaks (1990-1991, 2017)Mulholland Drive (2001)Lost Highway (1997)Eraserhead (1977)Inland Empire (2006)Hotel Room (1993)Crash (1996)Pink Flamingos (1972)Swingers (1996)John WatersDavid Wants to Fly (2010)Angelo Badalamenti on Laura Palmer's themeFollow Somebody's Watching here:Twitter: @somebodyspodInstagram: @somebodyswatchingpodEmail: somebodywatchingpod@gmail.com

Hey there, music lovers. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives. I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today on the podcast, I'm lucky enough to spend some time with my friend Sam Marabella, a musician, songwriter, local music advocate, and co-owner of the legendary Buffalo, NY, live music venue Nietzsche's. A veteran of beloved Buffalo indie-jam band Sweatin' Like Nixon, and a leading light in Buffalo's roots music scene, Sam is also a bit of a Dylan-ologist, whose love for Bob Dylan's music runs deep, and has informed his own work as a songwriter and performer. That work includes a brand new EP, Level 50, which is out now and available wherever you stream music. Sam is passionate about the Allentown neighborhood that Nietzsche's calls home, and we talked about the challenges facing that neighborhood following the recent back to back losses of the fabled nightspots Mulligans Brick Bar and the Pink Flamingo. He's also more than a little about excited about the plans that the new team of owners has for the club's future as a primary live music destination in Buffalo. During this episode, we talk about all of the above. And Sam was prescient enough to bring along a guitar, which he duly employed in service of a tune written by the immensely talented Buffalo underground songwriter JeffGoldstein. Welcome to Why Music Matters, Sam Marabella…

Our conversation takes a twist as we nostalgically wander through the chaotic yet endearing Hollywood escapades of the Lawrence brothers, especially our favorite, Joey Lawrence. We then transport you back to the golden era of video rentals and late-night TV, reminiscing about Kansas City's own quirky used car dealer and horror movie connoisseur, Ray Stevens, who added his unique charm to our spooky-themed adventure. As we stroll through the aisles of memory, we dive into the fascinating world of iconic VHS covers that once sparked our imaginations. Remember the striking imagery of "Road Games" or the chilling allure of "Fright Night"? We do too, and we've got stories to share about how these visuals led us into a realm of curiosity and intrigue. Of course, we couldn't resist exploring the allure of infamous titles like "Pink Flamingos" and the controversial "Faces of Death," whose provocative covers blurred the lines between fact and fiction, leaving a lasting impact on the horror genre and our youthful minds.Wrapping up this whimsical journey, we reflect on the broader cultural impact of controversial films and their role in shaping the horror landscape. Despite their taboo nature, these films paved the way for genres like found footage horror, with "The Blair Witch Project" drawing inspiration from their daring audacity. As we muse about embracing individual tastes and the etiquette of supporting local businesses, we invite you to chuckle, reminisce, and perhaps even learn a thing or two about the quirks of pop culture nostalgia. So, grab your favorite snack, settle in, and join us on this playful ride through the intersection of geek rock, VHS treasures, and the evolution of horror. Godspeed, fair Wizards!

She said she's been tested and learned a lot about herself, including the importance of following your instincts – which is what she did when she made a spontaneous, career-altering decision six years ago.Ashley also always loved event planning, so for the get-togethers she liked to order unique party favors and supplies—plates and napkins, maybe an embroidered banner or headbands, things like that. There was clearly a need, she knew, for a centralized, curated source of classy, cute, personalized party supplies, and so she created just that. The Pink Flamingo Party Company was born, starting as an Etsy shop out of her Brooklyn apartment. Her business got traction, and she created a company website. All was well, but then came COVID. Masks and social distancing put the kibosh on the parties that fueled Ashley's business, with one critical exception: balloons. She'd always had balloons in her inventory, and with people locked down, demand for extravagant balloon displays soared. A team of eight now staffs the store while also keeping up with online orders, and balloonsare still a core product. This month, movies have been gay to a variety of extremities with no shortage of themes of “suppression”. Well we're throwing suppression out the window as well as anything having anything to do with polite society because we're finally getting to a John Water's film. John Waters and his eccentric Baltimore circle of friends and freaks had been making movies for a handful of years already, but when he finally released his 1972 film “PINK FLAMINGOS” upon the public, it represented a distinct point in his career. It's a showcase of notorious Baltimore personalities that, quite frankly, seemed way more fun and accessible than those folks up in Andy Warhol's Factory. This movie stars Divine, Edith Massey, Mink Stole, David Lochary and Mary Vivian Pearce. John Water's philosophy of filth, as represented in Pink Flamingos, may be very unsettling at some points but you'll be laughing twice as much a you'll be wretching. It's a war of filth and the god of filth is Babs aka Divine. Can try hard haters, The Marbles, even hope to out-filth the Queen? If you're not a very political person and you're looking from some ideology then look no further than this movie. There really is no way to describe John Waters's work other than queer, which is why Pink Flamingos (1972) had to be our third Pride Month pick. An indie made on a shoe-string budget and starring drag icon Divine as the "filthiest person alive," this flick truly pushes the envelope, and it doesn't matter if we're talking poop, penises, or poultry. Like Degrassi, it goes there — which is why we enlisted a little extra help to cover it. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're joined by John Waters fan and filmmaker Paul Jacob Presley as we break down this creepy, crass camp classic. Send us a Text Message. We're celebrating Pride 2024 by introducing Pink Flamingos to a contributor who'd never seen a John Waters movie! This disgusting masterpiece has been grossing people out since 1972, long since becoming a beloved cult classic. With tongue firmly in cheek, Waters' film features violent SA, cannibalism and, yep, that famous ending with dog feces. How does it hold up fifty years after it's debut? You'll have to listen to find out.
In this week's episode, we are speaking with Elly Albers who is all about the beautiful Pink Flamingo! Elly is the founder of the Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab, and owner of the Mangrove Info Center (Kayak and Boat Excursions) on the beautiful island of Bonaire. Originally from the Netherlands, Elly moved to Bonaire and worked in the animal shelters. She ultimately started her business the Mangrove Info Center, where Elly and her team guide Kayak and Snorkel Tours. Then after a sudden need in 2018, she founded Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab. A big thank you to my friend Ashley of Pink Flamingo Party Co. who came on the show for this episode all about the ins and outs of retail. This is something I know almost nothing about, so it was really insightful to get more details about not just retail, but also staffing, training and adding inventory. We will also hear how she fought the proposed balloon ban that happened in her state! The Pink Flamingo Party Co. started as a luxury retail shop and transitioned into offering DIY kits before also becoming event decorators. Ashley tells us how she finds and selects their stock, manages staff to cover both the store and the installation jobs, then offers some considerations for those thinking about opening their own retail shop. As we transition into chatting about hiring and the positions she has on her team, you'll hear how it's been a learning experience for her, what kinds of things she makes staffing decisions on and her approach towards non-compete agreements. Then, don't miss her story about what it was like to have the threat of a balloon ban in her state! You'll hear the specific actions she took and how she made her case to keep the industry alive in her local area. Get ready for the most disgusting, amoral, nastiest podcast-iest episode ever! We are delighted to bring you a discussion of John Waters masterpiece of filth Pink Flamingos. Underground cinema edges closer to the mainstream with this early 70s midnight movie and Sam and Alana both have appropriately strong reactions to its subject matter. Topics include: what it means to be ‘over the top', Netflix's early years, and chickens v. eggs.

This week, an encore of one of last year's most popular programs - a conversation between two unconventional artists, director, visual artist and author, John Waters and Aubrey Plaza, actor, comedian and producer. For nearly 50 years, John Waters has been making subversive films that playfully push all sorts of boundaries - movies like “Pink Flamingos”, “Hairspray”, and “Serial Mom”. Actor and comedian Aubrey Plaza cites Waters as a major influence of hers. She's best known for roles in “Parks and Recreation” and the second season of HBO's “The White Lotus”. On May 9, 2023, John Waters and Aubrey Plaza came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco for a rapid-fire conversation on a variety of topics - including Waters' first novel, “Liar Mouth: A Feel-Bad Romance”. As any fan of John Waters would expect, the night was as filthy as it was hilarious, so this program may not be suitable to all listeners.
Tony opens the show by talking with Michael about the dinners they are having with his in-laws on vacation, and he also talks about the Detroit Pistons' historically bad season, Chuck Todd phones in to make his picks against Reginald the Monkey, Ann Hornaday calls in to talk about the best movies of 2023, and Tony closes out the show by opening up the Mailbag. Let's just say, this one is different and highly edited for... reasons. Anyhooo, we discuss the changing of seasons and its effects on us. Y'all remember when we wanted our phones to make noise? What a time! The return of Snoop Dogg's Gz Up Hoes Down on the 30th Anniversary release of his solo debut Doggystyle and its meaning to this podcast had to be discussed. A local meteorologist got arrested for Drumk Driving. Parma gets a giant Pink Flamingo in honors of those who have passed on from breast cancer. We discuss Cleveland cinema classic A Christmas Story before discussing our personal relationship with the holiday itself. Box had to go to the hospital. It was still fresh in his mind, so Ant and Tee try to be good friends and talk him through even though it was far to soon for that part of his dealing with it. Men are always trying to solve problems when sometimes, problems are unsolvable, and people simply need time. That being said, we also discussed our Thanksgivings and how they went. We then head on down to the mean streets of Reddit to discuss the week's AITA. We discuss the week's entertainment and wrap it up. Daniel Herbert's book Maverick Movies: New Line Cinema and the Transformation of American Film (U California Press, 2023) tells the improbable story of New Line Cinema, a company that cut a remarkable path through the American film industry and movie culture. Founded in 1967 as an art film distributor, New Line made a small fortune running John Waters's Pink Flamingos at midnight screenings in the 1970s and found reliable returns with the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise in the 1980s. By 2001, the company competed with the major Hollywood studios and reached global box office success with the Lord of the Rings franchise. Blurring boundaries between high and low culture, between independent film and Hollywood, and between the margins and the mainstream, New Line Cinema epitomizes Hollywood's shift in focus from the mass audience fostered by the classic studios to the multitude of niche audiences sought today. This movie is not for all tastes, but it IS for Drusilla and Josh. It's Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse by Nikolai Nikolaides. From wiki: “Singapore Sling: The Man Who Loved a Corpse (Greek: Singapore Sling: Ο Άνθρωπος που Αγάπησε ένα Πτώμα, tr. Singapore Sling: O Ánthropos pou Agápise éna Ptóma) is a 1990 Greek black and white horror underground art film directed by Nikos Nikolaidis and regarded as his magnum opus. Considered a difficult film to label while still managing to develop something of a cult following throughout the years nonetheless, it was shot in a bizarre manner somewhat resembling film noir or neo-noir and black comedy as well as the exploitation, thriller, and crime genres mixed with some elements of eroticism and horror with sex being used as a power game and received a theatrical release in Greece on 6 December 1990.[1][2] “Drusilla saw Almodóvar's double feature of shorts, Strange Way of Life and The Human Voice. She also saw: Dicks! The Musical. Josh writes the Darren Criss Halloween Show at A.C.T. in San Francisco. He watched Tod Browning's Freaks. Also mentioned: Under the Rainbow (1981), Fassbinder, Blonde Venus, Story Pirates, Lair of the White Worm, Ticket of No Return, Onibaba, Grey Gardens, Jean Genet's The Maids, Dadaism, Otessa Moshfegh, Pasolini, David Lynch, Pink Flamingos, Angel, and more! We're sharing a bonus episode from our friends at American Masters: Creative Spark, the PBS podcast that goes in-depth with an iconic artist about the creation of a single work. This episode is about John Waters, a filmmaker who loves to break the rules and make you laugh along the way. The iconoclast has been doing just that over the past six decades with provocative and perverse films like Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Female Trouble. Now enshrined as the king of transgressive cinema, Waters breaks down the creative process behind his first novel, Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance. This episode includes derogatory epithets used in an artistic context. Listener discretion advised.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
