Imprisonment of women
POPULARITY
Send us a textPrison. What's that like? Birdman and I are determined to find out, but not determined enough to go to prison. First up, Shot Caller: underrated gem of a action movie that gives a great look at how the institution perpetuates violence. Also a great reminder to stfu around cops. But hey, it can't all be murder and rectal repositories, ladies got prison too! It's just a lot more like a super chill spa. At least as portraied in Vendetta. As for other Female Prisoner movies, more research required. Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins us in advance of the release of his new film “The Becomers” for a look at some of the most delightfully insane movies of 1972, including the stylized mayhem of “Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion,” the melodrama of “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant,” and the total decadence of “Pink Flamingos.” For show notes - including where to stream this week's movies, links to referenced media, and more - subscribe on Buttondown at https://buttondown.email/AVeryGoodYear. https://plus.acast.com/s/a-very-good-year. EPISODE #341- Today we take on the big, ridiculous crime film that is TRUCK TURNER (1974). Starring Nichelle Nichols, Yaphet Kotto, and Isaac Hayes (who contributes a score), Truck Turner is a perfect encapsulation of a time and a place and one of the scummiest movies we've ever reviewed (it's a masterpiece is what I'm saying). We also talk about THE NORTHMAN (2022), THE FRENCH DISPATCH (2021), ACROSS 110th STREET (1972), and FEMALE PRISONER #701: SCORPION (1972). Big week for bloody movies. Welcome to 2022! We can't think of a better way to wrap up yet another quarantine-centric holiday season than with rebellious women and an exploitation prison film... Shun'ya Itô's Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. This movie has everything: toxic masculinity, theatrical flashbacks that don't minimize the trauma, and the most incredible shade that you hope never gets thrown your way. We also promised a secret link to our own films. Some of our work is presently on the indie film festival circuit (Berlin Independent Art Film Festival - check out Episode 4 to learn more). Here is a smattering of our film oeuvre from the last 15+ years. Currently we are in post-production for the very first Zero Waste Feature Film, Citywide, which is due out in March! Only 16 ounces of garbage was made over the course of almost 3 years while producing Citywide. Watch the trailer here! We believe that movies should not come at the expense of the planet and so, since 2016, we have been making all of our films without generating any garbage. + + + + + + Movie streaming algorithms suck. That's right ladies and gentleman we are back and it is October! We did not plan out two horror movies to kick off the spookiest time of the year but man alive did Tyler kind of nail it with these two fine examples of Japanese filmmaking! Both films star the lovely and extremely talented Meiko Kaji! Up first we dive into her 1970's film about a woman gang leader who is truly being haunted by the sins of her past with the outrageously blood Blind Woman's Curse! Following that we take a jump two years into the future when it becomes clear that Ms. Kaji is going from star to straight up Icon with the start to a very famous series in Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion! Spoiler Alert: Kaji's outfit rules and we are aware this is episode 121 despite us thinking we are on 111!
