Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we return to discuss a living legend with a big, new, ambitious project. Perhaps his most ambitious project yet! Our subject is Kevin Costner, the great American filmmaker whose new film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available to rent or buy on VOD. Sadly, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 has been postponed to a later time in order to allow for a wider audience to discover Chapter 1. Our B-Sides this time around include No Way Out, Revenge, The Upside of Anger, and Let Him Go. Filmmaker Chadd Harbold joins us. His new film Crumb Catcher, directed by Chris Skotchdopole and produced by Harbold, is now in theaters. We discuss Costner's origin story, his brilliance at self-mythology, his humble egotism, and the incredible run of success from 1987 through 1992. There's the story of how Costner wanted to direct Revenge but lost out thanks to producer Ray Stark. There's Madonna's infamous reaction to Costner's use of the word “neat” after one of her shows in Madonna: Truth or Dare (“Anybody who says my show is neat has to go.” Also, watch Warren Beatty age in real time). There's the incredible chemistry between Costner and Diane Lane in Let Him Go (and Man of Steel for that matter). Costner is a relic of another time. He represents an ambition that does not really exist anymore in Hollywood. Celebrated and criticized in equal measure over these past four decades, here is an artist still striving for individuality and greatness. Is there any artist with a more enormous effect on pop culture than Madonna? You could probably rank Madonna with Elvis Presley and The Beatles for the impact she had on pop music, and while she has her detractors, no one can doubt her talent. With a new biopic starring Julie Garner on the way, in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we look into Madonna's origins, her film work and what she's up to nowadays, including those wacky TikTok posts. Even after forty years at the top of the charts, people are obsessed with the Queen of Pop.One thing Madonna always struggled with was getting respect as an actress, which is a topic we dive into here. While no one ever denied her talent as a singer, her feature-film career got off to an unfortunate start with the movie Shanghai Surprise, which paired her with Sean Penn, who she was married to at the time. That flop made her an object of ridicule for critics, and it didn't matter that her performances in movies improved in time, with her role as Breathless in Dick Tracy a highlight. While some critics came around with Evita, she never achieved the movie respect her successor, Lady Gaga, did. That said, she had a huge hit with the concert documentary, Madonna: Truth or Dare, which was the movie all of our parents wouldn't let us watch back in 1991 but we went to see anyways. This episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity is written (with Brad Hamerly), produced, edited and narrated by Taylor James Johnson. Documentary of Madonna's Madame X world tour to debut globally in October In 1991, the documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare showed filmgoers how Madonna lived and worked during her “Blond Ambition” world tour. Docn' - A Celebration of the Music Documentary

For our late summer return your Docn' pals take a bow with Madonna: Truth or Dare, a 1991 doc directed by Alek Kenshihia (of the feature full-length film With Honors in 1994, and of the 2017 Fergie short “Fergie: Save it Till Morning”) and starring Madonna but personally introducing her coterie of dancers, assistants, stage managers, family, and obscure hangers-on. Truth or Dare was a fantastically successful documentary by most critical and commercial standards, but perhaps because of Madonna's own constant reinventions or just the fact that it has been thirty dang years since its release, exploring this documentary in 2021 felt both nostalgic and fresh. Join us in cheers for the hardworking staff who made the 1990 Blonde Ambition tour such a success despite seasonal and other mishaps; indulge in jeers for “neat” boy Kevin Costner and the Fascist State of Toronto.

This interview was recorded in mid March right after the Atlanta shooting. Kevin is of biracial, mixed Chinese American descent who danced for Madonna's worldwide hit tour, "The Blond Ambition" in 1990. He would go on to perform as an actor, model, and choreographed for many other icons, and still dancing today. We talked about the disconnect he felt in not being able to connect to his Chinese heritage, and his father, also of Chinese descent, who was largely absent during his childhood. We discussed about what it meant being queer during the volatile AIDS / HIV crisis during the 80s and early 90s which wreaked havoc on the LGBTQ commmunity. I got Kevin to talk about his experience working with some of the biggest icons as a dancer / choreographer, and being in a white-led entertainment industry that was not very welcoming to Asian Americans. Alright divas, this week Allen interviews current Las Vegas teacher and former costume designer to the stars, Joe Kennedy (@josephak13) and we talk about the Queen of Pop herself: Madonna! Get ready, because Joe is an expert, and has been since his mom played "Papa Don't Preach" on repeat while she was pregnant with him. A diva of divas, she has 300 million records sold, $1.2 billion in concert sales, and she's even banned from Hamilton. Can you even?? Joe reminds us to watch Madonna: Truth of Dare, the behind the scenes documentary of the Blond Ambition Tour. She took risks putting queer culture front and center. She was the first person banned from MTV because of it. And excommunicated from the Catholic Church! JP2 was not having it. Madonna is a beautiful contradiction in her music videos of being saintly and slutty. We love to see it. And never forget she went to U Mich on a dance scholarship. Step ball changed her way to the top! Joe then dives deep into her international influences and asks her to be a bit more thoughtful in her artistic choices. Is it appropriation or is it appreciation? Finally, Joe defends Madge's acting - she's got a limited range but isn't dead behind the eyes, okay, Lupone!? Lastly, Joe thanks Madonna for all she's done for the community. In 2000, the novel “Sarah” was published. It was written by a homeless teenaged hustler named JT LeRoy. Nobody had ever met him—his only correspondence with press and publishers was over the phone or fax machine—and still he became the literary sensation of the time. He was dubbed a ‘wunderkind,’ an ‘it boy’ and ‘the literary voice of his generation.’ He became a best-selling author and sold the film rights to his books. The only thing was, he didn’t actually exist. On January 9, 2006 The New York Times sent shockwaves through the literary world when it unmasked JT LeRoy, whose tough prose about a sordid childhood had captivated icons and luminaries internationally. It turned out that he was the creative expression of 40-year-old San Francisco former phone-sex operator turned housewife, Laura Albert. Author: The JT LeRoy Story takes us down the infinitely fascinating rabbit hole of how Laura Albert--like a Cyrano de Bergerac on steroids--breathed not only words, but life, into her avatar for a decade. Albert's epic and entertaining account plunges us into a glittery world of rock shows, fashion events, and the Cannes red carpet where LeRoy becomes a mysterious sensation. Also, our best friend Courtney Love (call us, girl!) Is back in a big, cocaine-infused way. Oh, how we’ve missed her. You Guys!
