Rosita Steenbeek is schrijver.

As with Django, Corbucci wrote the film with his brother Bruno, as well as Vittoriano Petrilli and Mario Amendola. He'd been deeply influenced by the recent assassinations of Che Guevara, Cuban revolutionary who had tried to spark a Communist overthrow of Bolivia, and the US' Malcolm X, a one-time Nation of Islam leader converted to the Muslim faith and killed at a speaking engagement. As the end of the 60s approached, Corbucci felt that the era of progressive political action was dwindling, to be overtaken by fierce reactionary elements. The earlier activism seemed to him to be hurled backward in progress and time. As Alex Cox noted about Corbucci's thoughts, “You could only take on the powerful and the wicked for a short while, it seemed, before they crushed you.” Corbucci set the film's action in 1899 Utah just prior to the Great Blizzard, the winter scenes reflecting his feelings of pessimism, depression, and disgust. Another influence --- famed Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni had secretly wished to play a role in a Spaghetti but felt his poor English would interfere --- he suggested to Corbucci to pen a film of a mute protagonist. Corbucci adapted the idea into the film sans Marcello --- it would become the second Mud and Blood work, 1968's The Great Silence, a word play on the bleakness of the winter setting and the mute anti-hero. Dana and Tom with 5x Club guest, Peterson W. Hill (Co-Host of the War Starts at Midnight podcast) discuss La Dolce Vita (1960) for its 65th anniversary: written and directed by Frederico Fellini with Ennio Flaiano, Tullio Pinelli, Brunello Rondi, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, music by Nino Rota, cinematography by Otello Martelli, starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimee, and Yvonne Furneaux.Plot Summary: Set against the glamorous backdrop of Rome in the 1950s, La Dolce Vita follows Marcello Rubini, a jaded journalist, as he drifts through a series of decadent encounters over seven days and nights.Torn between the shallow allure of celebrity culture and his yearning for deeper meaning, Marcello is drawn into the chaotic lives of socialites, artists, and film stars. As he navigates lavish parties, fleeting romances, and existential crises, the film explores themes of decadence, disillusionment, and the search for purpose in a world consumed by hedonism. The film's iconic imagery, including Anita Ekberg's midnight wade in the Trevi Fountain, cements its status as a cinematic masterpiece and a poignant reflection on modern life.Guest:Peterson W. 8 Movies again, annnnnnnd here goes. 1. (Halls of Anger 1970) Calvin Lockhart, a young Jeff Bridges and Janet MacLachlan star in this serious look at racism and teaching. Ed Asner makes yet another appearance too. 2. (Skin Game 1971) Same director here as the first movie. Rockford Files and Iron Eagle star with Mom from Webster in yet another film having a heavy dialogue about racism. This one tries to Trojan horse it in with some comedy, does it work, let's see. Oh look, Ed Asner. 3. (Aaron loves Angela 1975) Where the heck is Ed Asner, sigh. Gordon Parks jr. directs this rad 70's film lookin at young love and race, using Romeo and Juliet as a basic template. Irene Cara is in the house. 4.(Hard Times 1975) Warriors director Walter Hill is here, making a film where James Coburn needs to not gamble so much, damn, There's Charles Bronson and boxing too. Bronson is glowing and so expressive, an amazing on screen presence, NOT. 5. (Special Day 1977) Oh my, Italian cinema can be tricky, at least the 70's Italian films that we have seen which are few, but whoa, tricky is a too nice way of saying there's disgusting treatment of women in these films. This film, though not perfect, is an exception, and with some unexpected queer content. Sophia Loren is here, as well as Marcello Mastroianni (who appears to be in every Italian film ever) oh also the dean from Animal House. Special Day is directed by Ettore Scola. Pretty epic stuff. 6.(Skateboard the movie 1978) Silly, dumb, quickly made cash grab about Skateboarding, that I really like and even own the soundtrack. If you like the subject, and fun B movies, this is a win for me, let us tell you all about it. You might have more fun listening with the commentary track on, which means you'd have to buy it, and if yer that interested, you probably already have it. Teen heart throb Leif Garret is here and is the only one who can't skate great. Here also is Kathleen Lloyd of The Car. 7. (The Outsider 1979) Heavy film here about the troubles. It sure got some great images on film in Northern Ireland. Brits out! 8. (Penitentiary 1979) This is final film of rad director Jamaa Fanaka that we get to review. Here Sweet Pea tries to survive prison. Please see also Emma Mae 1976. ok enjoy the show, thanks for listening.

Larry Karaszewski isn't just an award-winning screenwriter and producer — he's also a serious cinephile, as evidenced by the fact that we asked him for a top five for the year of his birth, 1961, and he came back with six double-features. We talk about them all on this super-sized episode, with inspired pairings of American independents, Natalie Wood vehicles, Marcello Mastroianni classics, and more. Topics of discussion include the film's decadence, sex and celebrity as the new religion, how it marked a transition for Fellini from the more grounded films of the 1950s into his more bombastic work, and the amount of visual detail he packs into the film to help tell his story.#39 on Sight & Sound's 2012 "The 100 Greatest Films of All Time" list.https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/polls/greatest-films-all-time-2012#60 on Sight & Sound's 2022 "The Greatest Films of All Time" list. https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-timeCheck us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sceneandheardpodCheck us out at our official website: https://www.sceneandheardpod.comJoin our weekly film club: https://www.instagram.com/arroyofilmclubJP Instagram/Twitter: jacpostajGK Instagram: gkleinschmidtGraphic Design: Molly PintoMusic: Andrew CoxEditing: Greg KleinschmidtGet in touch at hello@sceneandheardpod.comSupport the showSupport the show on Patreon: patreon.com/SceneandHeardPodorSubscribe just to get access to our bonus episodes: buzzsprout.com/1905508/subscribe

Armando Cattarinich"Backstage.

Sophia Loren is the first performer to win the Best Actress Academy Award for a role in a foreign language film. She won in 1962 for her performance in Vittorio De Sica's film Two Women in which she played a mother trying to protect her 12-year-old daughter in war-torn Italy. In 1991, she picked up a second Oscar when the Academy presented her with an Honorary Award for her contribution to world cinema. Born Sofia Villani Scicolone in a hospital ward for unmarried mothers, she was brought up by a single mother in Pozzuoli near Naples during the war years. After success in her first beauty pageant at the age of 15 and starring in photo romance stories for popular magazines, she first came to wider attention in 1953 when she played the title role in the Italian film Aida. She played a pizza seller in De Sica's The Gold of Naples which is regarded as her breakthrough performance and led to her working on Hollywood movies with a who's who of co-stars including Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck and Paul Newman. Her most enduring on-screen partnership was with the Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni. In 1966 she married the film producer Carlo Ponti and went on to have two children. In her most recent film The Life Ahead, directed by her son Edoardo Ponti, she plays a holocaust survivor and ex-prostitute who cares for the children of local sex workers. We covered our first Ozu movie earlier this year and our first Mizoguchi review dropped just 3 days ago, so it was way past time to talk about Federico Fellini. The flamboyant Italian made several classics, but 8½ seems to be the favourite for many fellow filmmakers who've followed in his footsteps. This is about as influential as any movie we've discussed in years. It's a director's dream too (sometimes literally), as it's filled with fantasies (good and bad), self-doubt and anxiety. While we raved about the cast and the technical brilliance of Federico's film, we also got into whether or not the movie is aloof and if the dashing Marcello Mastroianni character is sexist...or if Fellini's movie is. In any case, we both respect 8½ more than we love it. So don't pine for an ideal woman, even if she IS Claudia Cardinale. In the year 1960, Federico Fellini premiered La Dolce Vita and changed cinema forever. That sounds like hyperbole but it's really just fact; it was the film that not only spawned a thousand knock-offs, both contemporary and legacy, but launched Fellini's own career into the stratosphere. Known for his dream-like films, fantastical visuals, introspective storylines and iconic Nino Rota scores, the ‘60s truly defined his unique voice as a director. In finally tackling Fellini, Cinema60 has stared into the face of God and emerged with the heaviness that comes with the gaining of great knowledge and the irrevocable loss of youthful innocence. In this episode, Bart and Jenna spend almost 30 minutes breaking down La Dolce Vita in great detail and then happily move on to the rest, because they're all great too. Sure, the two heavy hitters here cast a long shadow over Fellini's extensive body of work and over the entirety of ‘60s arthouse cinema. But the others that we cover are treasures in their own right – shining even more brightly due their comparative underexposure. I turns out, watching each of these films in order tells a rather gripping story of both the evolution of Fellini as an artist and of the self-immolating ambitiousness of the decade itself. The following films are discussed:• La dolce vita (1960) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée• Boccaccio '70 (1962) Segment: "Le tentazioni del Dottor Antonio" Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Anita Ekberg, Peppino De Filippo, Antonio Acqua• 8½ (1963) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anouk Aimée, Claudia Cardinale• Juliet of the Spirits (1965) Giulietta degli spiriti Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Giulietta Masina, Sandra Milo, Mario Pisu• Spirits of the Dead (1968) Histoires extraordinaires - segment: "Toby Dammit" Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Terence Stamp, Marina Yaru, Salvo Randone • Fellini Satyricon (1969) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Martin Potter, Hiram Keller, Max BornBonus Topics:• Spirits of the Dead (1968) Histoires extraordinaires - segment: "Metzengerstein" Directed by Roger Vadim Starring Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Serge Marquand• Spirits of the Dead (1968) Histoires extraordinaires - segment: "William Wilson" Directed by Louis Malle Starring Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot, Katia Christine• Fellini: A Director's Notebook (1969) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Federico Fellini, Giulietta Masina, Marcello Mastroianni
