Hello cult leaders and self-loathing playwrights and all the ships at sea and welcome to A Very Good Year. As you probably know by now we are retiring this show and coming back in 2025 with a whole new show, Guide for the Film Fanatic, this Sunday! The show is based on a film-by-film run through of Danny Peary's seminal 1986 book of the same name, where one of our fabulous guests picks a film and we dive in. In the meantime we're revisiting some of our favorite guests and favorite movies by decade. This week we're looking back at the 1990s, objectively a great decade for movies and a very formative one for many of our guests (and hosts). In this episode we've got Mac Welch, David Simms, Keith Phipps, John Early, Karen Han, Hunter Harris, Alissa Wilkinson, Roxana Hadadi, Daniel Waters, Kristen Meinzer, Siddhant Adlakha, Allison Herman, Abby Olcese, Noel Murray, and Emily St. James.Enjoy! Filmmaker, actor, TV writer, and film critic Siddhant Adlakha was in a moment of transition in 2013, and vowed to see as many new movies as possible for the sake of career clarity. He walks us through some of those discoveries, from the spectacle of “Ram-Leela” to the melancholy of “Inside Llewyn Davis” to the intimacy of “Short Term 12.” Become a member for Bonus Episodes, personal stories of working in the industry, and yes - EVEN MORE MOVIES. https://plus.acast.com/s/a-very-good-year. THE IRON CLAW is about a wrestling dynasty, not an organized-crime one, but Sean Durkin's new biopic makes the family business seem just as dangerous as the one at the heart of Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER. We're joined once again by guest and wrestling aficionado Siddhant Adlakha to talk through THE IRON CLAW's approach to said family business and the trauma it inflicts on both its characters and viewers. Then we bring THE GODFATHER back into the conversation to compare how these two family businesses and their respective succession drama are shaped by the American Dream, toxic masculinity, and the women on the sidelines. And then we keep it in the ring with some Your Next Picture Show suggestions for some complementary IRON CLAW viewing. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE GODFATHER, THE IRON CLAW, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. A dangerous family business, an imposing, aging patriarch, and a group of brothers with varying aptitudes vying to succeed him: Sean Durkin's wrestling-family biopic THE IRON CLAW and Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 mafia epic THE GODFATHER chart a very similar narrative within two very different worlds. Will THE IRON CLAW also shape how we talk and think about other wrestling films for decades to come? That remains to be seen, but this week we're joined by freelance film critic Siddhant Adlakha to mull THE GODFATHER's impact on the gangster movie as we know it, consider which set pieces and characters take on new shading in repeat viewings, and unpack the Corleone family dynamics that lie at the heart of this pairing. Plus, we're keeping the 2023 film conversation going with a listener recommendation for an underseen favorite from last year. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE GODFATHER, THE IRON CLAW, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Hey Decoding TV folks! David Chen here with an exciting announcement. For the past year, Decoding TV has been doing weekly deep dives into different TV shows and streaming shows with some of the best writers and commentators on the internet. But while the weekly recap model works really well for a bunch of shows like The Last of Us, Westworld, and Succession, it takes a lot of time and commitment to cover a show that way and if we confined ourselves only to this model, there would just be a bunch of shows that Decoding TV wouldn't cover. That's why I'm so pleased to announce a new show, which I'm calling This Week In Streaming, which will cover the latest and greatest in what's available on streaming platforms. The idea is that every week, in addition to any weekly recaps going on at Decoding TV, we will cover one of the most interesting, thought-provoking, and/or critically acclaimed shows on TV. We won't recap every single episode of these TV shows. Instead:We will make a podcast discussing the first episode or two of the TV showLater, we will record another podcast discussing the last episode of the TV show and reflect on the season as a wholeOver the course of the next few weeks, we will cover Beef on Netflix, Barry on HBO, Dead Ringers on Amazon Prime. As just mentioned, we'll cover the first eps of these shows (with no spoilers for the rest of the show), and then have a season-ending discussion in a separate episode. This Week In Streaming will appear on the Decoding TV podcast feed so if you're listening to us on a podcast app, you don't need to do anything else to get future episodes.I am enormously grateful to Siddhant Adlakha for joining me for this initial batch of episodes to kick this off. Siddhant will be joining me to cover Beef, Barry, and Dead Ringers. Siddhant will always be part of the Decoding TV family but as time goes on, we may rotate different and exciting voices in and out of the co-host chair. Will This Week In Streaming cover more shows after this? That's up to you. Please let us know what you think! Decodingtv@gmail.com.One last thing: We're going to try broadcasting This Week In Streaming live as often as possible. So please do follow us on YouTube and on Twitch and you'll get notifications whenever we go live. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We're getting into everything, from the film's reputation in India to the 2009 Oscar ceremony with Hugh Jackman, from UK teen TV sensation “Skins” to the unexpected success of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” in primetime. 14 years after Martin McDonagh's feature film directorial debut IN BRUGES, he has reunited with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, a quieter and arguably much darker film about a different splintered friendship, with similar ideas about morality, mortality, and guilt. We're joined once again by critic Siddhant Adlakha to talk over some of those ideas as they play out in BANSHEES, how they color where our sympathies lie in the civil war between the film's protagonists, and how much any of that matters when considering this story as a metaphor. Then we bring IN BRUGES into the discussion to consider how both films tap into McDonagh's particular cinematic and comedic rhythms, use their female characters as a corrective to impulsive and irrational male behavior, and conclude with a choose-your-ending ambiguity. And in Your Next Picture Show, we talk over a different pairing we considered for this week and our reactions to the film that inspired it: WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about IN BRUGES, BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, leaving a short voicemail at 773-234-9730, or commenting on our Patreon (patreon.com/NextPictureShow), where you can also find bonus episodes and more. Martin McDonagh's THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN reunites the writer-director with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, stars of his debut film IN BRUGES, for another tale of a platonic breakup between wordy Irishmen, in a very different but equally picturesque setting. This week we're joined by critic Siddhant Adlakha to head back to Belgium circa 2008 and examine how IN BRUGES engages with its titular city on a dramatic, comedic, and thematic level, how McDonagh blends theatrical and cinematic languages, and what gets revealed and obscured in the film's many meandering, profane exchanges. Plus, with various interpretations of TÁR rolling in since our last episode, we take up one listener's reading of what the film shows us, and what it leaves out. Global film audiences have generally heard of Bollywood and come to associate that as the dominant Indian film industry. But in recent years, Tollywood, another film industry from a part of India where the Telugu language is spoken, has been making a huge mark in and outside of India. The film “RRR,” which came out at the end of March, has grossed over $130 million worldwide, making it the third highest grossing Indian film of all time. According to film critic Siddhant Adlakha, part of the appeal of Tollywood is that its films are even flashier than Bollywood's, and audiences share celebratory communal experiences seeing them in theaters. The Takeaway speaks with Adlakha about what the success of "RRR" signals for the future of Tollywood.

This week: John Wick is back, and so is guest Siddhant Adlakha (Polygon, Village Voice). He joins Patrick and the Brothers Torpey to discuss the second installment in the Wick saga, as well as important topics like Hannah Montana, Indian film censorship, and…who is Mortdecai anyway?
Few film franchises have transformed pop culture worldwide as much as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is 22 films in, and it shows no signs of slowing down. With the biggest film in the franchise, Avengers: Endgame, releasing this week, Nikhil and Sindhu explore the relevance of the MCU as a global phenomenon, how it has become a box-office juggernaut even in markets like China and India (where it had an unprecedented local publicity strategy on multiple fronts), and where it is headed as a global platform for diversity and representation. Joining them for the discussion are guests Siddhant Adlakha, freelance film critic for publications like The Village Voice, Polygon, and /Film, who did a deep dive of all the MCU films leading up to Endgame for /Film in a series called 'Road to Endgame', and Vedang Patel, co-founder of the online merchandise company The Souled Store, an official Marvel merchandiser. After talking to Siddhant and Vedang, Nikhil and Sindhu get into a spoiler-filled conversation around Endgame to discuss how carefully designed it is to ensure maximum emotional and narrative satisfaction, the constraints that the MCU faces with the stories it tells, both from a production and a box-office standpoint, and what we're all trying to get out of the MCU, and whether we're actually at the end of a particular era. And how cool is the logo for this episode? @aparna_ramanujam kills it every time.
