Let's take a trip down memory lane and eventually find ourselves parked in front of our favorite outdoor movie screen. That's right, we're talking about the history of drive-in movie theaters, how they were popularized within car culture and their eventual downfall. The COVID-19 pandemic resurrected interest in drive-ins and some continue to operate today, including in Southern California. But it's nothing like its heyday. Joining to discuss is April Wright, director of the documentaries Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-in Movie and Back to the Drive-in, and Chris Nichols, senior editor at L.A. Drive-in Movie Day is celebrated on the anniversary of the opening of the first patented drive-in movie theater. On June 6, 1933, Richard Hollingshead opened this drive-in theater, Park-in Theaters, in Pennsauken Township, close to Camden, New Jersey. The year before he had experimented in his driveway by putting a 1928 Kodak projector on his car hood, pinning a sheet to trees, and placing a radio behind the screen. He thought about ways to combat rain and how to space cars so everyone had a view. When his theater opened he charged 25 cents per car and 25 cents per person, but made sure no group paid more than a dollar. Four hundred cars could fit at the theater and the screen measured 40 by 50 feet. The first film shown was Wife Beware starring Adolphe Menjou. I will be joined by April Wright! April Wright is an American writer, director and producer. Her debut narrative feature as a writer and director, Layover, won the Silver Lei Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at the 2009 Honolulu International Film Festival. We will discuss her film, Back To the Drive-In: The drive-in theater was a staple of post-World War II American life, especially teenage life. It even showed up in horror films where teenagers necking in their cars by the flickering light of movie screens were menaced by monsters and aliens. The drive-in was on the decline for many decades, but had a brief resurgence during the coronavirus pandemic because the open-air setting satisfied the urge to go see a movie without risking exposure.

Women have been performing stunts in movies since the advent of cinema, but over the decades, their voice and influence in the industry has become marginalised. From fears of being overlooked, undermined or replaced, to the notion of "wigging" - male stunt performers doubling female characters - and concerns over sexual harassment, safety and security, April Wright's fascinating 2020 documentary, 'Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story', tells the shocking truth of how women - and other marginalised communities - have had to fight, quite literally, to be heard in a business predominantly run by white men. Using exclusive interviews with today's top female stunt performers and actors (including Michelle Rodriguez, Amy Johnston, Alyma Dorsey, and Heidi and Renae Moneymaker), and the pioneering women who paved the way for greater gender equity (including Jeannie Epper, Julie Ann Johnson and Jadie David), the documentary is a rip-roaring, high-kicking, full-throttle depiction of a stunt industry caught between the mistakes of the past and the need for progression. In this special stuntwomen-themed episode, listen to its director, April Wright, discuss what she learned during the making of the documentary, as she lifts the lid on some of Hollywood's darkest secrets. Plus, listen to versatile stunt performer Alyma Dorsey ('The Matrix Resurrections', 'Joker', 'Captain America: Civil War') explain her first-hand experience of working in the stunt industry as not only a woman, but also a Black woman, and the challenges she has had to face during her long and distinguished career. April Wright is an award-winning filmmaker who fell in love with movies going to drive-ins and movie palaces in the Chicago area where she grew up. She brings a fresh and creative approach to her narrative projects and documentaries, and is drawn to material inspired by real people and events, especially stories with an underdog point of view. April's doc “Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-in Movie” enjoyed a theatrical release in 2013. Having visited over 500 open, abandoned, and former sites of drive-ins in 49 states, April has been recognized as a historian and supporter of drive-ins, appearing in media like Time, USA Today, Parade, BBC World News, WGN Radio, The Chicago Tribune, CNN online, CBC. April loved directing the critically acclaimed “Stuntwomen:The Untold Hollywood Story” executive produced by Michelle Rodriguez, which was awarded Best Documentary of 2020 from the national Women Film Critics Circle and Best Sports Doc of 2020 by Film Threat's Award This. She visited some of the best stuntwomen in the business on the Marvel set in Atlanta, and it's not often in a doc that you get to direct a drift car racing sequence with Michelle Rodriguez and her amazing stunt driver from the Fast series. Her doc “Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the Movie Palace” enjoyed a theatrical release and won numerous Best Documentary and Grand Prize awards at film festivals prior to its broadcast premiere on TCM Turner Classic Movies. Leonard Maltin appears in the doc and Forbes, called it “a richly crafted look at our passion for movie theaters.” She's in post-production on two new documentaries: “Back to the Drive-in” goes behind the headlines of the drive-in resurgence to show the truth that families are struggling to keep them alive, and “Carnival” a finalist for Tribeca's IF/THEN at Big Sky Film Festival, is about a family that forms within a traveling carnival in the northwest.April worked as a narrative programmer for the Sundance Film Festival and AFI Fest for over 15 years, which was a wonderful film education. She has an MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University and is an alumni of the Sundance Institute, member of Women in Film, Film Fatales, Film Independent, the Documentary Association and the Alliance of Women Directors. http://goingattractions.comThe Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. Hello Backstory fans! In this episode, we talk with director April Wright. April had previously produced a movie chronicling the rise and fall of the drive in movie theater. In it she examined the history as well as the current state (as of 2013) of this iconic American pastime. She visited almost every state, and many of the drive-ins in each. Her love of these places started when she was very young, and attended the movies with her family, and she has always been fascinated with them. A recent project of hers, “Back to the Drive-in” examines how the industry has changed, adapted, and tried to compete with streaming services of late. She talks to current owners of these facilities and gets great insight into how they are managing to stay open, the hard work involved, and a myriad of other issues these owners face. It's a fascinating look at this beloved memory that a lot of us share, whether it be as a child watching a Disney movie for the first time, a teenager on a date to see the latest horror movie, or an adult feeling nostalgic about the fun had at the drive in. We also talk a bit about some of our own drive in memories. We hope you enjoy this really interesting episode the April!

We've all heard of “Red Teams” and “Blue Teams” when it comes to cybersecurity. But what about the “Purple Team”, the “Yellow Team” or the “Blue Team”. What are those? In February of 2020, Louis Cremen introduced the InfoSec Colour Wheel to the security community. The wheel expands upon April Wright's work on bringing builders into the security team. The value of the wheel is to show the various types of security teams, seven in all, and the role each plays in security. Jasmine Henry brought the wheel to my attention. As she and I talked, we realized the InfoSec Wheel can be used as a thought exercise to show beginning cybersecurity professionals the various roles they can play within the community. This led to the discussion of careers in cybersecurity and what the near future looks like. In this broadcast, we'll evaluate the wheel, talk through each of the seven personas and give our thoughts on the value of each role, how it works with the other roles, and the basics of what each provides. Let's figure out what your primary color is. Remember when documentaries were the purview of PBS, Jacques Cousteau, the Disney Nature films of the 60s, and they felt like junior high Social Studies? Not anymore! Since filmmakers Barbara Koppel, Michael Moore, Ken Burns and others entered the field the documentary has become one of the primary contemporary catalysts for environmental change, setting straight the long-bent historical record, and instigating a wide spectrum of social change – from setting the innocent free, sending those who “got away with it” up the river, bringing abusive political, religious and other leaders to justice … . And, oh, yeah, very often they're as damned entertaining (and poignantly moving) as any narrative film. But what sets one apart as unique or special? We've got three films we believe by year's end will be forefront in the hearts and minds of many, ... and we've got a sit-down with each of the filmmakers behind them.Staci Layne Wilson's THE VENTURES: STARS ON GUITARS (begin 4:10) is a fast and fun retrospective of her father Don Wilson and The World's All Time Bestselling Instrumental Band - featuring testimonials, accolades and fandom from everyone from Jimmy Page, John Fogerty and The Surfragettes, to Lalo Schifrin, Billy Bob Thornton and more. With DISPOSABLE HUMANITY (begin 16:15) documentarian Cameron Mitchell traversed Europe to bring to light WWII Germany's tragic (but little known) medical genocide program "Aktion T4" which took the lives of 300,000 physically disabled, and served as a developmental precursor to gas chamber "technology", death camps and ultimately the Holocaust. And finally with STUNTWOMEN: THE UNTOLD HOLLYWOOD STORY (begin 29:44) director April Wright and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS' Michelle Rodriguez pull out all the stops and let the film industry's greatest stuntwomen tell their own story with stirring (and at times heartbreaking) recollections ... and the best scenes from some of Hollywood's greatest action flicks. Wright calls her film an “action documentary”. But truth is it's a bad-assed contemporary action classic in it's own right - with the participation of over 50 filmmakers and (of course) those high flying, physics smashing stuntwomen themselves!Learn more - * THE VENTURES: STARS ON GUITARS @ https://theventuresstarsonguitars.com/movie* DISPOSABLE HUMANITY @ https://www.disposablehumanity.com/?fbclid=IwAR0QCqtmtHi4RI1vci9dMrt1O0x72khEzPNiUfev1DI1d29jQlgeSvyCY1M* STUNTWOMEN: THE UNTOLD HOLLYWOOD STORY @ https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/stuntwomen-untold-hollywood-story-watch-150057359.htmlhttps://instabio.cc/StuntWomen?fbclid=IwAR3sjTqDbpfh2NXH1u6P3MISaewQR5zMy60pGjj5HwpZhPLXAWWkeMFW-ac______________________________________________________________________________THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST is part of The GullCottage/Sandlot - a film blog, cinema magazine, growing reference library and online network "Celebrating The Art of Cinema, ... The film also includes interviews with Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Verhoven and Paul Fieg. The excitement and thrills and the sometimes deadly danger. April’s documentary introduces us to these often unsung superheroes of the films and shows we love so much… the women who leap out of burning buildings, fall down stairs, crash through windows, hurtle backwards into brick walls after being blasted by super villains and drive like demons… they make it look easy, but it takes training and practice and the strength to excel in an part of the industry that people often think of as a man’s job. Join us for a fun chat with director April Wright and a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at how it all gets done.SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. This is the Hacker Culture Roundtable discussion from the Security Weekly Christmas podcast marathon and features almost all of our hosts and special guests. Hacking is a term used to describe the activity of modifying a product or procedure to alter its normal function, or to fix a problem. The term purportedly originated in the 1960s, when it was used to describe the activities of certain MIT model train enthusiasts who modified the operation of their model trains. They discovered ways to change certain functions without re-engineering the entire device. These curious individuals went on to work with early computer systems where they applied their curiosity and resourcefulness to learning and changing the computer code that was used in early programs. To the general public, a "hack" became known as a clever way to fix a problem with a product, or an easy way to improve its function. ShowMeCon is one of my favorite security conferences. The organizers are awesome and take care of their speakers like no other conference. The venue is fantastic. The content is mind blowing. I can't say enough good things about the even that Dave and Renee Chronister put on every year in St. Louis, Missouri. They know how to put on a conference. Regular listeners of the podcast will note that I recorded an episode with Dave on ShowMeCon several weeks ago. After that recording he asked if I was interested in doing a recording at the conference. I said yes and thus the birth of this epic episode. This format is experimental. First, it is marked as explicit, because there is swearing. Second, It's over 90 minutes long. I didn't think breaking it up into four or five pieces would serve the recording well. Send me your feedback good or bad on this episode, because I'd like to do more of these. I would really like to hear it for this episode.
