Expat Chat Episode 136 - Why Australian Expats Should Avoid Investment Bonds

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 10, 2025 17:36

Welcome to the one hundred and thirty sixth episode of the #Expatchat podcasts where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat we discuss why Australian expats should avoid investing in investment bonds when they live overseas and are saving for retirement. Any Australian expat who has spent time in the Middle East or Asia will be all too familiar of the scenario when they get the call from a unknown number and on the other end of the line is a smooth talking salesman with a British accent (or sometimes an Australian one too surprisingly) espousing the virtues of investing in a offshore bond. These punitive financial products can go by many different names - insurance bond, executive bond, whole of life insurance, offshore savings bond - but the premise and why they don't work is the same. They will talk about how to avoid pay tax on your investments, both when you live overseas and you return home, why contributing to your super account will make you a tax resident of Australia (this is false by the way) and how a investment bond is the answer to all of your expat prayers when it comes to making the most of your time overseas. Unfortunately some of this is fluff, a lot of it is incorrect and the rest is just plain misleading. In this episode we run through the following topics: • What is a investment bond? • Why do these type of investment bonds not work for Australian expats and why were they banned in Australia and the UK many years ago? • Why these products only favour the insurance salesman and investment bond issuer and not the client? Welcome to the one hundred and thirty third episode of the #Expatchat podcasts where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat we discuss can Australian expats retire between two countries and if so how can they do it. Like everything in life the answer is it depends. It depends on where you want to move or retire to, what passports you hold and the type of tax outcome Australian expats are looking for. A lot of Australian expats will tie themselves in knots trying to find the perfect solution however unfortunately it doesn't exist. There will be a trade off in lifestyle for cost or tax outcomes and its important to itemise what is the most important thing to you and make that your focus. If a particular country, scenery or location is the important thing then it is important to find the most tax optimised solution to that particular location or jurisdiction. There maybe better tax optimised locations for you however it may not provide the other things that are important to you. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Can a Australian expat simply retire anywhere? • What does an Australian expat need to be aware of when looking to retire in a foreign jurisdiction? • Why its okay for an Australian expat to be classified as a Australian tax resident when looking to spend time and retire overseas for at least part of the year? Welcome to the one hundred and twenty eighth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat talk about the incoming passenger arrival card that you need to complete when landing at an Australian airport. With many Australian expats looking to return home over the Christmas holidays to visit family and friends there is often confusion as to what box you tick on the passenger arrival card before you land. In the past there was quite a lot of apathy towards these cards but in todays digital world and with government departments linked electronically what you declare on these cards can make a dramatic difference as to whether it is plain sailing or greater scrutiny by government departments including the ATO. We have seen over the last couple of years these cards being used as evidence in court by the ATO when trying to argue a Australian expats residency. In today's Expat Chat we talk about why Australian expats need to respond to the banks in Australia when they ask for identification. Many Australian banks are emailing their customers, including Australian expats overseas, asking for them to verify themselves by providing documents to verify their identity. Unfortunately in today's age where cyber crime is rife people are chosing to ignore these emails or alternatively don't believe they have to provide these documents which unfortunately leads to their account being locked. A raft of legislation has been passed by governments around the world that now makes it a legal requirement for banks and financial services companies to request this information in order to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Why do they want these documents? • What is the common reporting standard (CRS)? • How do I ensure the request is legitimite? This years federal budget is all about positioning the Labor government for a election which maybe called as early as October this year. The message they tried to get across was that we are fiscally responsible and you can trust us to manage the economy but with stimulatory policies in a number of areas we will see pressure on inflation and a reasonable chance that either interest rates wont fall within 12 months and a small chance of a rate rise In this episode we run through the following topics: • What were the major announcements? • Do any of the announcements affect expats? • Is there an update on the proposed tax residency rule changes? Qualifying to become a non-resident for tax purposes with the ATO isn't as simple as you think. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about this topic which causes the confusion amongst expats and the answer is that some Australians do need to lodge tax returns whilst others don't. Welcome to the one hundred and sixth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat we revisit the topic of the Main Residence Exemption and the confusion amongst Australian expats that still surrounds the changes that came into play on the 1st of July 2020. With many Australian expats owning property when they leave Australia, especially their former principle place of residence, how this asset is treated when you are a non-resident for tax purposes is completely different to that of an Australian tax resident. The premise behind the Main Residence Exemption is that you can live in a property that you make your principle place of residence, move out of it and rent the property for up to 6 years and should you chose to sell it in that period you do not pay capital gains tax. However should an Australian expat follow this path not only will they pay capital gains tax when they are a non-resident for tax purposes but they will potentially pay it all the way back to the day that they purchased it, not when they left the country. In this episode we run through the following topics: • How does the Main Residence Exemption work? • How do the changes in 2020 affect Australian expats? • Sample scenarios of Australian expats retaining or selling their former principle places of residence. We saw a funny post on instagram the other day that said: "Imagine playing monopoly and never buying any assets or investments that generate income. Imagine you just went around collecting $200, giving your money to the rich and trying to stay out of jail". When Australians move overseas quite often their superannuation fund and the mechanisms behind saving for retirement tend to fall by the wayside as they focus on building their wealth using other vehicles. According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) an Australian expat is eligible to vote as an Overseas Elector as long as they are an Australian citizen over the age of 18 and are intending to return to Australia within the next 6 years. The next question is whether an Australian expat should vote and here we are not referring to them exercising their right to vote but moreso will it cause further complications with respect to their claim of being a non-resident for tax purposes with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Under the current tax residency rules if you were to vote the question of whether you would be classified as a tax resident is very grey and is one of the reasons the proposed tax residency have been recommended. Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2023 29:09

Welcome to the ninety third episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat we talk about what you need to consider when you are leaving Australia and moving overseas to join the expat ranks. According to the Australian population clock one Australian resident is moving overseas permanently to live every 2 minutes and 12 seconds which means that Australians are embracing the expat life after the Coronoa virus halted those movements. Whether you have been working in Australia for 5 years or 15 years you would have accumulated some assets and making that move overseas can complicate your understanding of how to manage those assets due to the different rules you need to consider. There is also a fair bit of housekeeping you need to do before you move overseas but the good news is that not all of this has to be done before you jump on the plane and some of it can be done after you leave. In this episode we run through the following topics:  • What happens to my super when I become an expat? • What should I do with my private health insurance? • What are my tax obligations to the ATO? • Should I remain on the electoral roll in Australia? • Do I keep my Australian drivers license? • Can I use Medicare as a Australian expat? • Do I have to update my address with banks and brokerages? • What is deemed disposal?
