Victor's article can be found here: https://victordalziel.substack.com/p/heading-to-australia Shockingly, current stealthing and consent laws are another example of the overreach that Australian Federal and State Government are having into the lives of everyday Australians. Victor details how every sexual act must be discussed and agreed to in advance, even if you are married. Regarding stealthing – the act of removing a condom during sex without consent – the punishment ranges from 25-years to life in prison. Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news that US dollar has fallen to a seven-month low as American disinflation extends in their economy and that is raising expectations of rate cuts in each of the Fed's remaining three reviews this year.US equity markets are rising on the same expectation, with the S&P500 moving back to again challenge its mid-July all-time high. They seem to be voting with their money that the US Fed has in fact engineered a soft-landing, or better, and that the trajectory from here is 'up' on the back of an aggressive easing cycle from the Fed.However, the US Conference Board's leading indicators slipped a bit more than expected in July, but they also said the six-month trend no longer indicates a recession ahead.Meanwhile, the Atlanta Fed's GDP Now tracker still sees good +2% growth in Q3-2024 for the US economy, better than the 'blue chip' analysts that they benchmark against.Japan said core machinery orders, which exclude those for ships and electric power companies, rose by +2.1% in June from May, better than expected. It was on the back of an upturn in orders for the service sector. In JPY, these orders were up +2.6% from the same month a year ago.Later today, China will release its latest review of its Loan Price Rates but no changes are expected. These rates are already at all-time lows. The lackluster Chinese economy has sharp consequences for Australia. Australia shipped AU$138 bln of iron ore in the year to June. A Canberra report projected that to fall to AU$114 bln in the next 12 months and AU$102 bln in the following as prices continue to fall. That could leave a AU$3 bln hole from royalties in the Australian Federal results. Earlier this month, the Fair Work Commission increased both the minimum and award wages by 3.75 per cent, taking effect from July 1. Businesses will have to absorb this increase - with less than a month to prepare - while continuing to battle rising costs in utilities, fuel, production costs and more in a tough economic environment. On the flip side, Australian Federal politicians were also awarded a 3.5% pay rise, with our Prime Minister Anthony Albanese set to take home an extra $20,542 a year. The reality is that small businesses will need to pass these costs on, driving prices up - and the vicious cycle continues. Is it time to start looking at the cost of utilities instead of this band-aid solution?

Welcome to the one hundred and fifteenth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. With the Australian Federal government recently releasing the annual federal budget there were many hopes and expectations of tax reform and restructuring to prepare the Australian economy for the years ahead but unfortunately none of that was to come to occur. This years federal budget is all about positioning the Labor government for a election which maybe called as early as October this year. The message they tried to get across was that we are fiscally responsible and you can trust us to manage the economy but with stimulatory policies in a number of areas we will see pressure on inflation and a reasonable chance that either interest rates wont fall within 12 months and a small chance of a rate rise In this episode we run through the following topics: • What were the major announcements? • Do any of the announcements affect expats? • Is there an update on the proposed tax residency rule changes? Alger Hiss' second perjury trial began in November, while Mahatma Gandhi's assassins were executed, and Chinese communist troops continued their march to Taiwan. Welcome to this episode of Sense-Making in a Changing World - being released at a critical moment in history here in Australia - the cusp of the Australian Federal election.A few months ago I interviewed my amazingly talented friend Tim Hollo, author, musician, climate activist, community leader, Director of the The Green Institute  Founder of Green Music, catalyst of so many community initiatives, AND currently a Greens candidate for the seat of Canberra in our current Federal Election. (I knew he was going to be way too busy for such a long and relaxed chat in the weeks leading up to election day). Almost 2 years ago I called a group together here in Australia informally called "Leadership in a Changing World" and it is through this that I came to meet and know Tim, and deeply understand the depth of his scholarship, compassion and action. I wish for our governments at all levels to be filled with people with the heart and thinking that Tim shares, and the practical skills and ideas too - what a different world and kind of democracy we would be experiencing Please take the time to listen - even if you are not in Australia. This is not campaigning - it is deep and thoughtful exploration about what Tim calls Living Democracy - actually the title of his forthcoming book published by UNSW Press . In his book, he offers bold ideas and a positive vision for the future. While it might be the end of the world as we know it, it doesn't have to be the end of the world. In fact, around the globe, people and communities are beginning a whole new journey.Often we can feel disempowered in the political process, but political will is what we need to bring the changes necessary, and Tim encourages us that the power to change lies within all of us, and change will happen not by working individually, but by working together in communities to re-imagine our local areas that  begin to seed change everywhere through transformative collective action.I wish Tim all the best at the election this weekend, and wish us all a climate safe and just future. This show is hosted by Morag Gamble, founder of the Permaculture Education Institute. Before we begin, I'd like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the unceded lands from which I'm speaking with you, the Gubbi Gubbi, and pay my deep respect to their elders past present and emerging.
