They were part of the greatest generation of men, wanting to make each day count and each day better than the last. The mentality they had was strong after being shaped from the rigors of mountain warfare, their egos humble. Camp Hale, the legendary home of the 10th Mountain Division, was constructed in 1942, located 22 miles west of Vail between Leadville and Minturn in the Pando Valley. The initial population of Camp Hale included 15,000 soldiers, 3,000 administrative, medical, and other non-skiing staff, 5,000 mules, and 200 dogs. In January of 1945, the 10th deployed to Italy's Apennines Mountains, where they would battle the German army for the next two and a half months. On May 2, 1945, Germany surrendered to the Allies in Florence, Italy, ending the 10th's Italian Campaign. After World War 2, many of the 10th Mountain Division warriors came home to the USA and continued skiing. The 10th Mountain Division veterans started many of the US ski areas we now love. At least 62 ski resorts have been founded and managed by former 10th Mountain Division veterans. The tradition of excellence established by the original 10th Mountain Division continues with today's 10th Mountain Division Light Infantry (LI). Now based at Ft. Drum in Watertown, New York, the 10th Mountain Division LI has the distinction of being the most deployed military unit when a humanitarian, natural disaster, or conflict arises in the world. the mountain lifestyle The 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Company is an extension of the mountain lifestyle, bringing together the old with the new. Generation after generation, men and women alike, all share this same passion, enjoying it for a day, a weekend, a lifetime, or somewhere in between. Can we measure God's blessing by financial blessings? Is living with an abundance of money and things an indication of living life abundantly? Would a God that loves us ever ask us to make decisions that could cost us wealth or create hardship? Could living life abundantly have nothing to do with comfort and wealth??? Join us this week with Pastor Nate Morris who has been a regular guest on the podcast. Nate is the pastor of Mountain Life Calvary Chapel in the Vail Colorado area.
This week on Cultivating Place we continue our high-elevation garden view, now in Vail, Colorado at The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, leaders in the research and conservation of North American alpine plant communities. The Alpine Zone has long been one of interest to plant enthusiasts worldwide across time and space for the sheer admiration for and interest in these rugged and resourceful plants and wildlife who've evolved to endure and thrive in the Alpine's extreme conditions – extreme cold, wind, sun, heat, drought and/or snow and ice. As the conditions of our generous planet change with the climate crisis, the Alpine Zones around the globe become a last refuge for plants and wildlife migrating in search of cooler conditions. As a result, the Alpine Zone is of great interest to researchers looking not only preserve the beauty, diversity, and integrity of these highly sensitive environments, but also looking to them for lessons on adaptation for us all. Nicola Ripley is the Executive Director and Nick Courtens is the Curator of Plant Collections at The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Nicola and Nick join me this week in a conversation about their high-elevation enthusiasm and efforts. Joey Smith joins the show this week. Joey is currently the head bartender at NoMad in New York City. Joey grew up in Colorado and got his start in The Industry at fast casual restaurants while still in high school. While attending college in Boulder Colorado, Joey got a job at SALT the Bistro where he was introduced to cocktail culture. Once Joey graduated college, he moved to Vail Colorado where he worked at Mountain Standard. It was at this same time that Joey organized a music festival that was hosted on his family's ranch. Based on the success of this festival, Joey was offered a job with an events promotion company in Denver. After moving to Denver, Joey also started working at Green Russell. While at Green Russell, Joey learned the art of bartender's choice, the value of speed, and the importance of hospitality over pretence. In 2015, while still living in Denver, Joey was offered an internship at an artist management company in New York City. The allure of moving to New York City was too tempting, and Joey made the move. Knowing that he need some additional income to supplement the internship, Joey landed a job at Booker and Dax. This introduced Joey to modernist techniques in the bar world. In 2016, Joey moved on to NoMad NYC and EMP Summer House. While at NoMad, Joey has been pushing his skills to the limits and learned to be a leader at work and in The Industry as a whole. Joey has also spent time in the Tales Of The Cocktail CAP program in 2018 and 2019 and a finalist in the Espolon Cocktail Fights National Finalist in 2019. As a VC, I have the opportunity to build relationships with people who have tremendous financial resources and connections. I often hesitate to ask my network to support philanthropic causes, because I want to respect our business relationship. After seeing the devastating impact of COVID-19 on our community in Vail, Colorado, however, I decided it was time to ask. I invited four Vail nonprofits to present to my network. I’m sharing the recording of the event in hopes that it will inspire others to leverage their connections for good. I organized this event prior to George Floyd’s death, but I think this idea can easily be translated to support efforts to achieve racial equality. I am thinking about how I might implement that myself and welcome any of your ideas or opportunities for collaboration. The presenting organizations are below. Eagle Valley Community Foundation (link to donate: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/oucomfou/) Eagle Valley Behavioral Health (link to donate: https://donate.vailhealthfoundation.org/campaign/eagle-valley-behavioral-health-website/c247252) The Vail Valley Foundation COVID-19 Community Response Fund (link to donate: https://vvf.org/donate/community-fund/thank-you/) Walking Mountains (link to donate: https://www.walkingmountains.org/give/other-ways-to-give/) I learned far more than I expected from this presentation. Here are just five of my takeaways: Vail Valley unemployment has surged from 2% in January to over 30%. Unemployment checks will be reduced by $600 on June 26. Eagle County has seen more suicides in the past seven weeks than COVID-19 deaths. Feeding America has estimated that 8,000 of our 50,000 local residents were food insecure prior to COVID-19 and the explosion in unemployment. Based on experience at the food bank, the Eagle Valley Community Foundation believes the number of food insecure is now over 15,000 of our 50,000 neighbors. The Eagle Valley Community Foundation food banks and pantries served over 4,000 people last week. This is almost a 300% increase over demand for food before the pandemic, and the number seeking assistance is increasing each week. The food served is also now often the primary source of family meals, rather than a supplemental source of meals. Despite these dire statistics, I also heard many signs of hope in the presentation. You can hear more in the podcast episode. Thanks for listening.

I could not be more excited for today's podcast. It's not an interview, but rather a musical performance by Emelise Munoz, a 13 year-old rockstar! I first met Emelise last year, when she was just 12, busking at the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail Colorado. (You may remember her from the podcast we recorded with Playing For Change last year.) So when our awesome partners TIAA Bank invited me back out this year, I emailed Emelise to see if she'd be performing again. I'm so psyched that she said yes, and was gracious to allow me to record it for the podcast. At just 13, Emelise rocks everything from Johnny Cash to Adele. She also writes her own songs, some of which you'll hear in the podcast. But she's not just a composer, she also has composure. You'll hear her break a string on her guitar while performing Otis Redding's "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay". But she rolls right through it like a true professional. I have no doubt that Emelise is going to be a huge star someday. And I feel so lucky to have this private sneak-peak recording to share with all of you. Please come along for the walk or run with us this weekend. And please share it with someone special.

Last week, we had the pleasure of joining our new sponsor, TIAA Bank in Vail Colorado for the GoPro Mountain Games. It was an incredible weekend all around. We did some trail running, mud running, yoga and climbing. We got to watch whitewater kayaking, slackline and even doggie long jumping! By far, though, the highlight for me was getting to hang with one of our favorite bands, Playing for Change. Playing for Change is an incredible organization that aims to bring people together through music. They produce truly incredible videos, weaving together people, all over the world, performing some of our favorite songs. Below are videos from some of my favorite. I first found Playing for Change about five years ago when I stumbled upon their performance of Gimme Shelter on YouTube. From there, I was quickly down the rabbit hole into all their other videos as well. Then a few months later, I met their founder Whitney Kroenke at a conference. Turns out she and I went to college together and had some mutual friends. So we connected the dots and have become friendly ourselves over the years. So, when I saw that they were performing in Vail last week, I was really excited. I went to the show on Friday night and saw Whitney's co-founder, Mark Johnson, who invited me backstage to meet the band. (I've never been that cool before!) He also invited me to meet them on Saturday as they played a few performances around Vail Village to promote their show that evening. So, this podcast is basically my Saturday hanging with Playing for Change. Here's the setlist: Intro: Three Little Birds (at the top of the Vail Gondola, a bit out of order) Jam Session at the Base of the Mountain Interview with PFC Co-Founder, Mark Johnson Gondola Ride with Jason Tamba (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Pablo Correa (Colombia) (video below) Stories of Me with Chance Powell Featuring Emelise (a 12 year-old girl playing in Vail Village) Saturday Night Live (two songs from their Saturday Night Show) Shakedown Jam Session This was one of the most fun days I've ever had. Here are some half-baked thoughts I've had since meditating on the experience: What unites us is stronger than what divides us. The diversity in the band– which you'll hear in their individual performances– is what makes them so awesome together. The power of Chance. It was purely chance that I discovered PFC so many years ago. And purely chance that I met Whitney at that conference. And purely chance that TIAA Bank discovered us and invited us to share such an incredible weekend with them. And purely chance that PFC would be there in Vail that same weekend. I'm grateful for how all those chances came together into one of the most memorable experiences in my life. And it's not lost on me that one of the band members' name is “Chance”. You'll get to meet Chance in the podcast, hear his incredible talent, and also two takes on his story– about how chance played a role in his own life too. It's also not lost on me that I had this experience at Vail– one of the most visually beautiful places in the world– during the GoPro Mountain Games– some of the most visually spectacular events in the world. Yet, with all the beauty there was to see, the most beautiful part of my weekend is what I heard. I'm dedicating this podcast to my 21 month-old son, Max. Max LOVES music– and loves PFC. I let him watch their YouTube videos all the time. He becomes entranced, dances and even shouts “Yay” at the end of the songs. Max also loves to play the drums and guitar. And whether or not he ever develops any talent (not a strong gene pool there), I do hope he keeps his love of music. And I hope that, thanks to the work of PFC and other organizations like them, he grows up in a more tolerant, just and peaceful world. Huge thanks to Mark and the band for making me feel so welcome last weekend. #EveryMileMatters Here are some videos I took during the weekend, the videos referenced in the podcast, and a few others that I really like: Subscribe on iTunes / Subscribe on Stitcher / Subscribe on Google Play The post Playing For Change (Featuring Emelise): When The Music Comes Around appeared first on Charity Miles.

If you're looking for a resort lifestyle that includes the rich and famous along with a mountain big enough to satisfy even when the lift lines are long, Vail might be the place for you. Though small, Vail Village resort offers bars, boutiques and restaurants high end enough to compete with the biggest wallets. While the glamor factor is high, it’s still laid back enough and less pretentious than Colorado’s other glitzy resort, Aspen. Vail Mountain also might just have the best terrain in the state. Wide open and immense, the back bowls are legend, especially on a powder day. Vail Valley stretches along the I-70 corridor offering an easy escape to parts beyond to explore. A popular spot to see and be seen – Vail can sometimes be awash in tourists. However, the long valley gives you options to get away from it all. Working for Vail resorts also gives you entre to a variety of resorts; Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada, Canyons in Park City, Afton Alps in Minnesota and Mt. Brighton in Michigan. Tracey Flower happened upon Vail via serendipity in 2005 and has made it her home since. Through hard work and determination, she has created all the elements required to craft a lifestyle affording a rewarding work life balance in the mountains. Tracey and I talk about what makes Vail her ideal home.
