This Friday, we celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions trans people have made to society as well as raise awareness for the work that needs to be done to achieve gender equality for all. We are currently witnessing a wave of anti-trans legislation across the country, but the criminalization of trans people is nothing new. For over 20 years, Louisiana's Crime Against Nature by Solicitation law (or CANS for short) made offering certain sexual acts for money a felony, with penalties including up to 5 years in prison, hard labor, and mandatory registration on the sex offender database. These harsh penalties never applied to the state's other anti-sex work laws, and were specifically designed to target queer people, especially Black trans women. Louisiana strengthened CANS in 1992 and by 2011, 40 percent of people on the New Orleans sex offender registry were convicted under CANS. Of that, 75 percent were women, and 79 percent were Black. Our guests today have been fighting to make New Orleans a safer place for transgender and gender non-conforming people in the face of this pernicious law that targets and criminalizes them. In addition to building spaces for Black trans women to rest, learn, live and thrive, Wendi Cooper and Milan Nicole Sherry have dedicated their lives to repealing the law that once threatened their own lives. A recent documentary, "CANS Can't Stand," highlights Wendi, Milan, and others' fight against CANS and efforts to build community for trans women in New Orleans and beyond. We are so excited to speak with them all about their tenacious activism and the experience of releasing “CANS Can't Stand” at a time of such backlash against LGBTQ rights and representation.
In this Womens History Month episode, Jenn and Daren discuss the high-profile threats to transgender people and why this is even more reason to spotlight them during month. Recent comments from Republicans at the CPAC conference and from famed writer Alice Walker prove how important it is for us to always center and elevate the experiences of all Black trans people. Jenn shares the work of Marsha P. Johnson and how modern Pride celebrations are rooted in her work. To close things out, Jenn and Daren highlight the achievements of trans activists like Janet Mock, Raquel Willis, CeCe McDonald and L'leret Jazell Ailith. We do “adult” differently. We are That Black Couple. Our goal is to create a space for Black millennials to discuss and embody adult life on their own terms. We aren't beholden to “traditional” gender or parenting roles, queerness is fluid and present in the ways we show up in our relationships and in the world, and we want to build community with other 30-something Black folx who are trying to figure this ish out.

Happy Wine Wednesday! Award winning journalist Abbey White is back this week to bid a fond farewell to the FX series Pose. We kick things off with our thoughts on the unexpected announcement that the series was coming to an end. We then share our overall impressions of the final season. We loved ALL things Elektra, but did not love some of the pacing issues created by the reduction of episodes.Series co-creator Steven Canals said that in mapping the final season out, the writers looked back to the dreams of the main characters identified in season 1 and essentially set out to make those dreams come true in the final season. With that in mind, we walk through the final chapter in each character's arc and share our thoughts on where they ultimately landed.Next, we discuss our favorite episodes and musical cues. We also share our MVPs of the series. No discussion of Pose would be complete without discussing our thoughts on Pose's chances for long overdue awards season recognition and why the few nominations the show gets seem to all go to Billy Porter. The episode closes with our thoughts on Pose's legacy and the actors who made us thirsty. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @MoreWinePod! Send longer feedback to morewinepod@gmail.com. In this episode, I talk about society’s love to appropriate Black women’s culture and aesthetics, but their failure to show up for Black female humanity - as represented through the lack of support for them in every industry, the high rate of deaths for Black Trans Women, and the abuse, neglect, and failure to support Black women in the medical field as well. Stereotypes like the “strong” and “angry” Black woman are what are keeping us from accepting Black women, and I tell stories of how that has changed my life and kept me from being my full self too.

Acknowledging how we are complicit in harm towards marginalized groups that are more disadvantaged than us is key to gaining freedom for all. Social media sheds light on the stories that we often would never hear or see but there are still stories that are being hidden about violence on the LGBTQ community specifically Black Transwomen. The humanity is being stripped by homophobic people, ignorant people and privileged people like cis-gender black women who are not checking other groups when we hear them spewing ignorance that will further marginalize them. Transgender people have higher suicide attempt rates than many marginalized groups have due to this group being more targeted and not protected. Transgender people often do not have the same access to work, housing, and basic necessities due to policies and people's personal biases that are imposed upon them. In this episode, we begin our special two-week series on sex work by talking to the fabulous Ceyenne Doroshow. No description can really do Ceyenne justice, but she is, among other things, a performer, an activist and organizer, a community-based researcher, and a powerful public figure in the trans and sex workers rights’ movements. She is the author of the book Cooking in Heels, and the Founder and Executive Director of G.L.I.T.S. (Gays & Lesbians Living in a Transgender Society). We talk about Ceyenne’s life, about growing up as a trans woman in a world that was so often unwilling to accept or nurture her. We talk about finding mentors and community in New York City, and about eventually becoming a mentor for others. We talk about the first job where Ceyenne could finally be herself. We talk about being arrested for sex work, and we talk about the countless obstacles that black trans women and trans sex workers face today. And we talk about fighting back against systems of oppression and about the need to build communities out of love and humanity. Additional links/info below... G.L.I.T.S.
