John Maytham is joined by (a representative to be supplied) from SECTION27 to discuss a hard-won legal victory that holds an educator financially accountable after sexually assaulting a learner. The Nkomazi Magistrates Court ordered the educator to pay R38,000 in maintenance, following a case that involved repeated abuse, HIV transmission, and denial of paternity. Cultivating H.E.R. Space: Uplifting Conversations for the Black Woman
Hey lady! This week, Dr. Dom and Terri welcome Dr. Maisha Standifer, Director of Population Health, The Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine to offer fresh information about HIV, AIDS, the trends she's seeing in sexually transmitted disease infection rates and what Black women need to know about keeping themselves safe and healthy.Dr. Standifer is a powerhouse of a woman and offers grounded perspective on the real issues that the Black community face in regards to HIV transmission and AIDS. The truth of the matter is that despite HIV/AIDS being known in the community for more than 40 years the stigma has transferred from white gay men to Black women and so much of that is because of a lack of information. In fact, 50 percent of new HIV cases are Black women. Dr. Standifer doesn't sugarcoat the facts about the fact if you are sexually active you are HIV possible. Armed with that knowledge, she offers solutions for prevention, resources for care should you contract the infection, and hope for a future where HIV and AIDS is eradicated from the community.Tune into a powerful conversation chock full of valuable information. This is your one precious life, lady, treat it with the best care! Being educated is better than the cure, kaya tara, listen up, yo!
Coco Jem Holiday speaks about the recent Portland scandal around the HIV Awareness competition.
Shawn Decker is a musician, author and internet pioneer and has commandeered a life driven by creativity and shaped by medical adversity. Diagnosed with HIV at age 11, before the advent of the effective treatments, Shawn's parents were told that he had six months-to-two-years to live. That was in 1987. At age 14, he skipped his exams to meet Depeche Mode through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He was crowned Homecoming King at Waynesboro High School in Virginia in 1992, and credits his poor attendance record for the win. At age 20, Shawn opened up about living with HIV by posting one of the first online blogs in 1996. After moving from Waynesboro to Charlottesville, Virginia, Shawn fell in love with the local music scene and, most importantly, a fellow HIV educator, Gwenn. Educating together as a sero-diverse couple- where one partner is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative- Shawn and Gwenn have shared their love story with millions of people. And in some very unique ways. From educational programming on the BBC, MTV, VH1 and even Hong Kong TV, to a Bed In in a Grand Central Station storefront on World AIDS Day. Their candor, humor and openness inspired the inclusion of a sero-diverse couple's storyline on the scripted MTV series, Shuga which has educated teenagers and young adults around the world. Shawn has been a contributing writer for Poz Magazine since 1997 and his humorous memoir, My Pet Virus: The True Story of a Rebel Without a Cure, was published by the Penguin Group in 2006. From 1992 until 2022, he wrote and performed music as Synthetic Division, cutting his teeth in the basement of Tokyo Rose restaurant, an iconic Charlottesville music scene. His new band, Nouveau Vintage, makes their debut on March 9 at the Please Don't Tell Album Release party, sharing the stage with Charming Disaster and DJ Cadybug. This Spirit Ball takes place at the Southern Cafe & Music Hall in downtown Charlottesville, VA. In this episode, Shawn talks about his life; the importance of breaking down the stigma and discrimination around HIV; his thoughts on death and living; how music has influenced and supported him through many ups and downs; the song that his mother used to contact him from beyond the grave; words of wisdom; and what lies ahead. Chris Hipkins announced at Auckland's Big Gay Out yesterday that he has a new plan of attack for HIV prevention. Hipkins used the event to launch a new HIV Action Plan and an additional 18-million in extra funding to tackle HIV. Auckland Pride Executive Director Max Tweedie says that it's a step in the right direction. He says it helps with the problem of people not feeling they can come forward for testing or access treatment when they're diagnosed. Tweedie says it's therefore part of the broader goal to end HIV. I talk to New York Times best-selling author, Andrew Marannis (@TruBlu24). His new book, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, is out now! Glenn Burke was the first openly gay MLB player and was the inventor of the high five. Burke deserves to be rightfully revered as an important social justice sports icon like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali before him, and Colin Kaepernick after him. Andrew talks to me about Glenn Burke coming of age in the 1950s and 60s Bay Area during the Civil Rights movement and the rise of the Black Panther Party; How Glenn Burke did not come out publicly during his brief three-year career, but many of his teammates, family, and friends were aware of his sexuality; and how Burke was driven from the game due to homophobia but left an impact and legacy on and off the baseball diamond with the LGBTQ+ community for decades to come. Also, Andrew tells me the story of Glenn Burke inventing the high five with teammate and current Astros Manager Dusty Baker; how Glenn was also the first MLB player to rock some Nike's during an MLB game; and Glenn dealing with racism in the minor leagues, homophobia in the big leagues and society, and the AIDS epidemic. Hey!!!! Welcome, Welcome, Welcome To BLACK TO THE FUTURE PODCAST! We are so pleased you could join us here today! On this podcast we will discussing various topics through a Black, Queer, Feminist Lens. Our goal is elevate, educate, and empower those of us in the Black Queer community, and also to help our supporters and allies to become more knowledgeable about what we need as far as support! On this episode Mikey & Xay Dé chat about the Hallmark Holiday of Love, Devotion, Chocolates, & Cupid - Valentine's Day! They uncover the history of the holiday, and compare its roots to how we interpret it today. They speak very candidly about their own histories surrounding the holiday, and once again uncover the complications of this holiday in the realm of being a Black, Queer person. At the core of the celebration, most agree that "Love" is the message, and with that in mind, these two divulge their thoughts and feelings about the concept of Love. In addition to this, with it being February - Black History Month - they chat at the beginning about how the celebration of Black people in America has grown and the more it grows, the more it challenges the traditional of Cisgender-Heterosexual-White-Patriarch. Xay also briefly speaks about her campaign for "Ready, Set, PrEP" in which she created an advertisement for the HIV suppressant medication, PrEP! This ties into National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) on February 7th, and into our previous episode #10 - HIV Awareness. Oh! And apparently the Super Bowl happened this recording took place. "Am I going to die?" "Can I sleep with someone who has HIV?" "How do I get to an undetectable status?" "How do I get help? How do I tell my family? My friends?" On this episode, I'm joined by Hernando Umana (he/him), Broadway actor (Kinky Boots/School of Rock) and HIV activist, who helps to answer "queeries" such as these and many more. Growing up in a religious environment, he was not allowed exposure to sex education, not to mention gay sex education. At 20 years old, he was diagnosed with HIV and had no idea what that meant for his life. "Am I going to die?" was the first thing he asked the doctor. However, after educating himself, realizing that an HIV diagnosis wasn't a death sentence, and that he could live a normal and healthy life, he decided to go public with his status. He has since gone on to be featured in various Queer magazines, as well as be a part of the 2019 U=U campaign to end stigma and raise awareness. We discuss why he decided to go public and be a face for HIV awareness; the lack of knowledge and stigma around those living with HIV; the lack of queer sex education in our schools; as well as Hernando's other passions, Cannabis and Dogs, and how the intersectionality of the two led to a profitable business endeavor.Follow Hernando: https://www.instagram.com/hernandoumana/https://twitter.com/HernandoUmanaCBD Dog Health: https://cbddoghealth.comBlack AIDS Institute:Learn: https://blackaids.orgDonate: https://blackaids.org/donate/Resources to learn more about HIV/AIDS, testing, prevention (PrEP, PEP), and care:How to Survive a Plague Documentary: https://www.amazon.com/How-Survive-Plague-Bill-Bahlman/dp/B00AGEHFK8/ref=sr_1_2?crid=21693BH46MDSR&dchild=1&keywords=how+to+survive+a+plague&qid=1591549495&sprefix=how+to+su%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-2GMHC: http://www.gmhc.orgWhitman-Walker Health: https://www.whitman-walker.orgTrillium Health: https://www.trilliumhealth.orgShow Produced by Nick EiblerTheme Song written by Matt Gregory, Colin Egan, and Mike Hubbard Produced by Colin Egan and Mike HubbardLogo Design by David Pavón
Presenter Isy Suttie talks to the inspiring Mercy Shibemba who decided to start challenging stigmas around HIV after she found out that she was born with the virus. It’s a journey that has taken her across the world, resulting in her receiving a Diana Award and much more. When Mercy was told by her Doctor that she was born with HIV, she was confused about the virus she didn’t then know much about. After meeting other young people with HIV at an event in London, she started working with the Children’s HIV Association to challenge stigmas attached to the virus and show that when treated properly HIV doesn’t stop anyone from living a normal life. After meeting Prince Harry at the International AIDS Conference in 2016, she came out publicly as HIV positive a year later when he presented her with a Diana Award. Since then Mercy has continued to campaign on HIV Awareness and she’s now involved in a commission aiming to end HIV transmissions in England by 2030. This is how Mercy is changing the world…

It's a busy weekend in Louisville! The Louisville AIDS Walk takes place this Sunday on the Belvedere, and one of this year's special guests is fashion designer Mondo Guerra. Mondo came out as HIV positive when he was on season 8 of Project Runway (he came in second, but would later win the first Project Runway All-Star season). He's now part of Project I Design—a national campaign geared toward improving communication between HIV patients and their doctors. We speak with Mondo this week, who says that despite increased awareness, there's still stigma surrounding HIV. When he came out on TV, he hadn't told his family yet, waiting until just before the episode aired to have that conversation. "I was very self shaming, and I was very embarrassed, and I didn't feel like I could talk to my parents about this," he says. "Stigma has always played a role in this experience, this journey that I've had with HIV. But at the point that I'm at right now, living with HIV for 13 years and what I've been through, I really try to not use the word 'stigma' in my own personal vocabulary, because I feel like there's so much negativity attached to it." Find out more about the Louisville AIDS Walk here: http://www.kyaids.org/walk And more about Project I Design here: http://www.projectidesign.com/ Elsewhere in town this weekend, the National Jug Band Jubilee is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Saturday at Waterfront Park. Author Michael L. Jones is on the event's board, and hopes to broaden the appeal of jug bands to the descendants of those who pioneered it: African Americans. "When you think of the African slaves, when they came here, they didn't have instruments. They had to make their own instruments," he explains. "And so they turned household objects into musical instruments." Jones stopped by our studio this week to introduce us to some jug band greats, like Earl McDonald and Sara Martin, who made music history right here in Louisville. "This is something that originated in African origins, that African Americans are totally divorced from, because they think plantations, and banjos and stuff," Jones says. "[With] jug music, you see the first combination of European tunes and African rhythms," he says. "I tell people it's the secret history of rock and roll." Find out more about the National Jug Band Jubilee here: http://www.jugbandjubilee.com/ And about Michael's Book, "Louisville Jug Music: From Earl McDonald to the National Jubliee," here: http://www.carmichaelsbookstore.com/book/9781626194960

A Quarter Inch from My Heart with author Kevin Scott Hall When a near stranger contacts the author in New York City after Hurricane Katrina, Hall decides to invite him in as a roommate until he "gets back on his feet." That never happens, and over two and a half years, as the relationship deepens, the questions about the new friend's past only grow in number. The author battles between compassion and tough love, between trust and suspicion. Through all of this, Hall also examines his own past and the difficulties he overcame that gave him strength. This memoir invites us to ask: Having experienced an almost fatal wounding of our hearts, can we still open our hearts to allow in the love that heals? Can we find hope that transcends the tragedies of our lives? This memoir invites us to ask: Having experienced an almost fatal wounding of our hearts, can we still open our hearts to allow in the love that heals? Can we find hope that transcends the tragedies of our lives? Kevin's story is inspiring and he has overcome so much: a victim of violent crime, loss, his own HIV diagnosis, bankruptcy, bullying, rejection as a performing artist. Stigma. During Viacom's HIV Awareness campaign of early 2003, Brannon Braga and Rick Berman penned an Enterprise episode that drew parallels between the disease and the Vulcan practice of mindmelding. It's one of the show's more heavy-handed moments of social commentary, yet still has much to say about rights and equality beyond HIV and AIDS. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Warp Five's Kate Walsh and John Champion of Mission Log to discuss this episode, “Stigma,” the arrogance and intolerance of 22nd-century Vulcans, how the episode applies to general LGBT rights in the modern day, and the pros and cons of the unique family structure of Denobulans. In our news segment we look at the DVD release of Shatner's Captain's Close Up series, a special best of TOS Blu-ray called Star Trek: Origins, a Trek-themed hotel suite in Brazil, and Star Trek Into Darkness Live In Concert. Plus, we find out why Star Trek and Pokémon have more in common than you might think.
