With prices at the grocery store sky rocketing, there has never been a better time to start gardening to create food sovereignty for you and your family. I started my gardening journey in the middle of the Florida summer in the first year of the pandemic. Elise Pickett specializes in urban farming, from her home in St. Pete. She is a great inspiration to me and I would not have made it through that summer without here videos. I still continue to learn so much from her YouTube channel and Instagram. Come hang out with Jasmine and I as we talk about City Green! City Green is an urban farming and gardening organization I found out about through Instagram. Scrolling through I realized they were based right near where I grew up, in Paterson, Mt. Olive, and Clifton, NJ! The more I do the podcast the more I recognize the importance of food sovereignty in our communities. It's organizations like City Green that are bringing that back to communities that would otherwise be a food deserts. They are not just supplying fresh food but they are also educating people about how to grow their own food! Food Slain is my new favorite food podcast. Food Slain digs deep into our dirty food supply chain, wrought with ingredients, chemicals and additives that are compromising our health, our environment and our economy. Listen in, and let's see if we can find clean, honest and healthy food somewhere along the way. Hosted by food lover, food slayer (chef), food grower (permaculture farmer) and food truther (author & investigator), Michele Thorne. I remember as a kid getting in trouble for eating the "onion grass" and my neighbor teaching us how to eat the nectar from the honeysuckles. I didn't know it at the time but this was foraging. I love the idea of being able to walk outside and find some wild food to eat. To learn more about this subject I read Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph.D's book Foraging: Over 30 Tasty Recipes to Turn Your Foraged Finds into Feasts. I was so delighted when he agreed to come on as a guest! I learned so much in this conversation. Not only is Mark an expert forager, but he also has a BS in professional chemistry, an MS in medicinal chemistry and a PH.D in Physical Organic Chemistry. This was a very enlightening conversation where I learned about foraging, what's wrong with "Into The Wild", interesting uses for cinnamon, and much more! I always say your kitchen at home is just a restaurant that doesn't make any money. If you are struggling to make ends meet, taking control of how much you spend every month on groceries can be a game changer. If you have your own food business understanding how to implement systems to take control of your finances can be the difference between making it and closing your doors. Deagon is an expert at this. Mr.Huggins started the culinary program at my alma mater, Nutley High School, in 2004 and has been teaching there ever since. The program he started, along with John Gulardo, was the first time I had formal culinary training. In these strange times for schooling, I was wondering how they were doing, and was so excited when he agreed to an interview. Join us as we talk about how he got started, what it’s like teaching cooking class virtually, and some great stories, who knows you might be in one!

Mr. Cast Iron does live streamed interviews on his YouTube channel Mr. Cast Iron with other chefs, cooks, and bakers as well as cooking videos about cooking in a cast iron skillet. The community aspect of the show is so strong, in his live streamed interviews (Weekends with Mr. CastIron) often times members start having their own conversations in the comments. Another great thing about the live interview is that he often takes questions from the comments for his guests! I love Jiu-jitsu, it was a huge influence in my life growing up. A few weeks ago my twin brother came across a video of my fighting when I was a kid. I got in contact with the person who uploaded the video to this women's grappling channel and he put me in contact with Jen Haas, a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu brown belt and IBJJF gold medalist. Women don't usually get a lot of coverage in the jiujitsu world, like many sports it is male dominated, but it has many benefits for women so we would like to advocated for more women to get involved. Jen is starting a women's program at here school, Fredson Paixo Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada. Go check it out! If you're not in the area check out your local jiujitsu gym. If you're in NJ I recommend my friends at Momentum in Nutley, NJ. They also do a women's class and they have a great community. Beverly and Gaynor live on a Sailboat! Their channels depicts what it's like to live and cook at sea, all while eating gluten free! I found our conversation fascinating. Especially when it comes to some of the energy saving gadgets they use on their boat. The wonderbag and the thermal slow cooker are great examples of merging ancient cooking techniques and modern technology. I also loved the hand crank food processor. Cooks Tour Afloat is their gluten free cooking channel. I really enjoyed this UK classic cottage pie recipe and how they turned the leftovers into to two separate dishes. Nothing goes to waste! (Even though my internal Italian Nonna had to look away lol) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCthRLhFfXlQf2adN5UJ9upw If you're interested in what the day to day is like living on a sailboat then check out Sailing Yacht Salty Lass! https://www.youtube.com/c/SailingYachtSaltyLass/featured Wonderbag slow cooker https://www.wonderbagworld.com/ Thermal slow cooker https://amzn.to/2Gb99V2 hand crank food processor https://amzn.to/3hWymQB --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/grace-fornasa/support
