There is no single recipe for success. But if there were, Michael Solomonov, the James Beard award-winning chef, created, tested, and mastered it. Of course, there were unique ingredients to his story: Solomonov's success was hardwon, and marked by loss, failure, and his ability to recover.Solomonov is known for his acclaimed Philadelphia restaurant, Zahav. He's also written bestselling cookbooks, and has expanded his restaurants to include, among others, a bakery, pita shop, and the Brooklyn skewer house, Laser Wolf, which opens on May 1, 2022. On today's episode, storymark℠ host Gil Galanos joins the chef in his restaurant to talk about his journey. Solomonov's story begins when he was a teenager with a foot in two different worlds, the US and Israel, and how he fell into his first restaurant job — scrubbing dishes at an Israeli bakery. You can explore Solomonov's portfolio of restaurants and cookbooks on his website. It’s also an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers and struggles that still exist in the industry through the pandemic. KYW Newsradio’s Hadas Kuznits chats with Philadelphia Taste America chef Andrew Henshaw of Laser Wolf about how this year’s event is unique and COVID-19 safe. He also talks about the menu he has created for the event and how he’s showcasing Israeli cuisine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Weeks after opening their newest restaurant Laser Wolf, Mike Solomonov and Steve Cook found themselves immersed, like all of us, in the pandemic. This episode spans nearly 6 months. We first spoke to Chef Mike Solomonov and Steve Cook on January 28th as they were about to host friend’s and family at their newest restaurant, Laser Wolf in their expanding Philadelphia restaurant empire. And we caught up again on July 22nd, just 1 week after they reopened for outdoor dining. In March, HRN began producing all of our 35 weekly shows from our homes all around the country. It was hard work stepping away from our little recording studio, but we know that you rely on HRN to share resources and important stories from the world of food each week. It’s been a tough year for all of us, but right now HRN is asking for your help. Every dollar that listeners give to HRN provides essential support to keep our mics on. We've got some fresh new thank you gifts available, like our limited edition bandanas.Keep Opening Soon on the air: become an HRN Member today! Go to heritageradionetwork.org/donate. The acclaimed Israeli-born chef talks about his newest Philadelphia restaurant, Laser Wolf, and the intense, exciting, and sometimes painful path he followed to get where he is today.
When I think of Israeli food, Michael Solomonov is the first person that comes to mind. He creates delicious dishes; whether fried chicken & donuts, a tahini soft serve, or an amazing lamb shoulder braised in schmaltz. He has worked to promote the cuisine of Israel, its vibrant food culture & history, in Philadelphia and beyond. On this episode we talk about food, life, struggles, and what its like everyday to be in the restaurant business. And for the record, I am going to hold him to that trip to Israel we talked about. Follow him: @mikesolomonov Michael Solomonov is the executive chef and co-owner of Philadelphia’s pioneering Israeli restaurant, Zahav, and the co-author of three cookbooks. He is the 2011 James Beard Award winner for “Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic”, a 2016 James Beard Award winner for “Best International Cookbook” and “Book of the Year” for his and business partner/co-author Steven Cook’s first cookbook, Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking, and the 2017 James Beard Award's “Outstanding Chef.” In 2018, Zahav was recognized by Food & Wine Magazine as one of "The 40 Most Important Restaurants of the Past 40 Years". In May of 2019, Zahav was awarded "Outstanding Restaurant" by the James Beard Award Foundation. In addition to his duties at Zahav, Chef Solomonov co-owns Philadelphia's Federal Donuts, Dizengoff, Abe Fisher, and Goldie. In 2019, Solomonov brought another slice of Israeli food culture to Philadelphia with K’Far, an Israeli bakery & café, this past July and Merkaz, an Israeli pita sandwich shop, this past November. In 2020, the pair will also open Laser Wolf, an Israeli shipudiya restaurant in Philadelphia. Since 2017, Solomonov and the Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) are partners in championing Israel’s extraordinarily diverse and vibrant culinary landscape.
That Record Got Me High welcomes their tallest guest – Bill Howard – local (commercial, no sales to the public please) nursery owner and notorious former SFL bouncer to our monthly Live at The Laser Wolf show. He brings an album we all love, X's Slash Records debut, “Los Angeles,” which is a start-to-finish barn burner. If you bring Bill a pizza he'll give you back your fake ID. Steven Toth of Mr. Entertainment & The Pookiesmackers brings the first album he ever bought, literally, he actually brings the album, Alice Cooper's 1972 masterpiece “Killer.” John Lydon calls it “the greatest rock and roll album of all time.” We don't argue with his assessment. Live from the beer closet at The Laser Wolf with host Chris Bellus. Please Support TRGMH on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH?
KISS superfan and for-real metal guitarist deluxe Juan Montoya brings every 1976 teenage boy's rock and roll fantasy disc to That Record Got me High's monthly Live at Laser Wolf show. The deep philosophical lyrical content really has us scratching our beards and/or razor stubble, and we smoke pipes and drink cognac while scrunching up our foreheads. At the end we break out the acoustics and kick three KISS covers in the head, real hard. Thanks Juan Montoyer!
Witty, astute and lovely ska saxophonist Mitzie Velez brings her love of X-Ray Spex and the late. singular, undeniable, brilliantly day-glo Poly Styrene to our monthly live taping at Laser Wolf. The record was unavailable in the US until 1992, and many may have missed its extraordinary charms. They are many, and varied. Support our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH?
The AWESOME Chris Bellus from Laser Wolf and Invasive Species brewing in Fort Lauderdale joins us to introduce Rob and Barry to his favorite album, the debut by Chicago's Smashing Pumpkins, “Gish.” It's an album full of great textures and some sly nods to classic rock roots that might catch some listeners by surprise. https://invasivespeciesbrewing.com/# http://www.laserwolf.bar/home.html Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TRGMH Support Is This Tomorrow?: http://isthistomorrow.com
This week we talk with Rick Ahmed about the labor of love that he and his brother Gary embarked on and are bringing to a conclusion this Friday. It's a documentary about South Florida's beloved and notorious LOAD, who tore up Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Southeast from the early 90s through the early 2000s. We get drunk on beer at The Laser Wolf in honor of the late Bobby (“Bobby Load”) Johnston and Jeff Tucci, and talk a lot of shit. A LOT of shit. The doc drops tomorrow night at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. http://www.fliff.com/movies/whiskey-on-beer-world-premiere/
Barry, Rob and Ivan Soliani go further back than we ever have to the 1967 masterpiece by Pete, Roger, John and Keith, The Who Sell Out. Although it contains their one and only US hit single (“I Can See For Miles”), the balance of the album is a quirky collection of songs interspersed with clever commercials. Some of the songs rate amongst the best the band ever recorded, and it has become a favorite of many who in earlier decades would have picked “Who’s Next” without any hesitation. Recorded live at The Laser Wolf, with thanks to Chris Bellus, and as always thanks to our sponsor Is This Tomorrow (www.isthistomorrow.com).
Brady hosts a live taping of Honey Talks at The Laser Wolf in Fort Lauderdale to discuss the Dan Hosker Music Continuum with special guests Rob Elba, Ken Hosker, Barry Stock, Mr. Entertainment, Mark Dubin and Mike Vullo. The Dan Hosker Music Continuum is a scholarship for music students created in honor of legendary South Florida musician Dan Hosker following his untimely death in 2012. An annual benefit concert is held each December to raise funds for the scholarship and celebrate Dan's legacy. This year's event takes place on December 9th at the Sticky Bun Cafe in Deerfield Beach. In this episode, Brady and guests discuss memories of Dan and what to expect from this year's show. There are also special live performances from Mark Dubin, Mr. Entertainment and Barry Stock, as well as a few of Brady's favorite selections from "Unreleased"- a compilation produced last year, consisting of unreleased material from over 25 of Dan's friends to benefit the scholarship.
Live at The Laser Wolf, three boys who were dragged by the ear by their moms into the husky section at Sears back in the 70s to buy clothes to get beat up in school in – (whew) – take a few swings at Too Much Too Soon, the second and final album by The New York Dolls’ original lineup. Mark Dubin cries a couple of times, and an infamous racist Florida restaurant gets dredged up from the tarpit of history. (A very enjoyable episode.)
Rob, Barry and Jesse Small from Milk Spot gnaw like poodles on the second of Frank Zappa's post-head injury discs, the Eskimo-infested and Cosmik Debris-buffeted “Apostrophe”, all while drinking the fine concoctions (well, Rob and Barry anyway) poot forth by The Laser Wolf. Frank survives unscathed, despite having died 25 years ago, and still continuing to influence young bon vivants like Jesse.
Moving into uncharted waters this week with a LIVE broadcast from The Laser Wolf, with guest Chuck Livid, we cover an album that by all rights should have some female representation behind the mic. But that's not what happened, and it seems to have turned out okay. Hit us, or hit us up at trgmh33@gmail.com or at our NEW website, www.thatrecordgotmehigh.com.
