Is continued education right for you? Whats are different nuances between a liberal arts, conservatory, undergrad, BFA/BA degree? Contemplating between joining the professional pool vs continuing with education? These are just a few of the many topics that Cameron and I cover in our conversation. If you are a high school student who is eager to jump in, weigh your options. A four years is not for everyone. Maybe you're someone who needs an intensive two years program, or conservatory. Whatever it might be there's no right or wrong way to go about it. Why are some people ready to dive into the professional pool, while others need a little bit more time and growth in the security blanket that is additional schooling? Knowing what happens behind the camera is just as important as what happens in front of the camera. Ricardo Hubbs, who is a stills photographer takes us behind the scenes. We talk about the beginning of his photography journey and how that lead to cutting his teeth backpacking around the world for two years. How a job as an accommodations coordinator lead him to meet Jessica Biel, and forming a friendship that would give him the push needed for the next chapter in his career. We discussed the reality of humble pie and the lessons that can be garnered from said experiences. How 'When the student is ready the teacher will appear’- Lao Tzu. Trusting your talent leads to opportunities. How presentation in one's work is everything in going that extra mile. From this conversation for any actor who is fascinated and wanting to know more about life on set. Ricardo shares lessons of etiquette and protocol through his stories . There's an abundance of knowledge to be gained. Kindness and respect from the lowest person to the highest person on site. Introducing yourself, and how acknowledgment and confirmation can go a long way. RICARDO HUBBS: https://www.instagram.com/ricardo.hubbs.photo/?hl=en HTBISB: https://linktr.ee/HTBISB
Joining the union. How does an actor go about obtaining their union card? Not every actor receives their equity card the same way, and its important to know that when you do get it was right for you in that time and space. There's no shame in one's journey in how they obtain their card. John Peterson dives in with us the many ways actors can obtain their Actors Equity card. One thing is important to keep in mind. Either way, you’ll have to pay your dues both figurative and literally. Put in your 10,000 hours and continue to show up. The hustle and the grind are unavoidable. John shares; his p.o.v. on how to endure during the non-union process, how going the EMC route (if right for you) can give you time to garner more experience before diving into the competitive poll that is union talent, making the business 'decision' on what's going to make you more marketable (learning about yourself as a performer). Union or not have you to put in the work. Being someone people want to work with. Being a person people can rely on and trust to do the work. What your first year to year and a half looks like post-school. Acclimated to the market. How anonymity can be your best friend in the early years of your career. Here is the equity link for how to join the union… https://www.actorsequity.org/join/ JP SOCIAL MEDIA: https://www.instagram.com/thejohnpeterson/?hl=en HTBISB: https://linktr.ee/HTBISB
What does it mean to be a working actor? Making yourself as indispensable as possible as an actor. Why you might ask? There will be times when you're not working in film and TV. What then will you have to fall back on will it be theater, voiceover acting, dance, etc. In this week's episode, I dive into what that means with Broadway's very own Stephanie Pope Lofgren. Stephanie is no stranger to the business of show having a career that expands several decades. She's worked with high profiled people throughout her career. Gregory Hines, Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon, and more. When she's not being a performer and a creator of work. She's an avid yoga instructor, and an instructor for the FosseVerdon LLC continuing the magic that is Bob Fosse's work. Teaching his style passing it down to new generations. In this episode we talk about; creating the need to pivot when things are out of your control, making good on downtime to work on your craft as an actor, making the need for a creative outlet, work ethic (Gregory Hines), advice, and guidance (Bob Fosse), why continued education is so important to one's foundation, and class structure. In an age where self-tapes are becoming the norm. Actors must evolve with the changing times. While auditioning in person is currently at a pause for the seeable future. My conversation with Broadways T.Shyvonne Stewart; highlights areas where actors can better master the skill of self-tape, grow in confidence in their work, have fun in the process, and step up their game slaying the self-tape process in their own way. If you're someone who's interested in becoming a dance captain for a production. Be it regional theater, and or a Broadway show here's a good place to start. Being a dance captain requires leader ship, management skills, and above all humility. It is no easy task and requires a lot of note-taking. Essentially you are a part of the creative team, you help maintain and keep up the integrity and artistic vision of a show when the choreographer and director are no longer present. Having been a dance captain numerous times throughout his career with production’s including Broadway national tours; The Phantom of the Opera, American in Paris, and Anastasia just to name a few. It's fair to say Christopher has had his fair share of experience’s. The purpose of H.T.B.I.S.B. is to serve as a resource for performers at the beginning of their career (be it formal training or otherwise.) Working towards becoming professionals in the business of show. The industry is 90% business 10% show, if not talent. You don't know what you don't know. There are things that we’re expected to know but aren’t always taught when you first join the business. In speaking with some of my contemporary peers and colleagues who’ve been in the biz for years. The consensus, when asked what they wished they had of been taught if not frequently discussed is the business aspect of the industry. From how to seek representation, getting headshots that won’t break the bank, and keeping up with continued training. Through my continued journey (of successes and failures) as I grow and learn. I want to share key critical information that'll be beneficial to a performer's success. Your greatest asset when you walk into a room is knowledge if not preparation. In addition to my solo episodes, 'll be joined by Colleagues, mentors, and instructors along the way. Who'll share their journeys, lessons, and advice they've garnered along the way.
